@TheEvilGreebo We actually had problems a long while ago where certain probably legitimate voting patterns caused people to lose their newly gained rep. So the system is definitely checking.

40 times in an hour is probably reasonable behavior, presuming you're just reading through the archives. 40 times in 5 minutes might trigger something.
The thing that happened before was a couple users hit their rep caps in a very short amount of time, probably because someone else was working from their user profile. But that also looks like you enlisted a toady to give you rep, so I can see why there would be a check for it.
I spend more time on DIY because I learn more here. It takes 20 minutes of effort to find a question I want to tackle on SO. I like Programmer's too, but the questions are usually too general to be a good learning experience.
