@BMitch Why?
We need a new close reason: "Off-topic because... There is no way to answer this question without actually being on-site.".

Q: Anyone have an idea about unidentified constant noise/vibration in single-family house?

user15761I cannot find the source of a constant noise & vibration that have recently (month or so) been happening in our single-family house. I've asked 2 different people, including our handyman, who checked several things, but so far only I have been able to hear/feel it. We are hundreds of feet away...

Is there a policy for duplicate answers? I see @bmitch has already despammed this user's posts: diy.stackexchange.com/users/15763/steve

Q: Is it acceptable to add a duplicate answer to several questions?

Won'tLet's say there is a user who has found a satisfactory answer to a common question asked on Stack Overflow (or other Stack Exchange website). This answer may be a snippet of code, or an addon, or a framework, or something else. Is it acceptable for this user to formulate an answer for one que...

@NiallC. we get an automatic flag when that happens. Theoretically, either the answer is bad, too generic, or the questions should be merged as dups. But I don't think the answer is all that bad, and merging the questions may lose one question mentioning a blocked return and another mentioning not wanting to adjust the dampers.
Agreed. The questions aren't really dupes either... One is about a sudden change, in the other one it's always been colder.
12:50
So, @NiallC., have you considered running in the election? I only ask because you're #1 when it comes to flagging :)
I agree. Then you can stop telling us how to do our job, and just do it yourself.

@Tester101 I don't get it. How is that any fun for me?
@BMitch Thinking about it, it'll be the weekend before I decide.

@TheEvilGreebo Do you realize that room is visible to anyone who clicks 'chat' from the main site? Do you want your PII removed? (it's too late for you to do it yourself)
what room?
the one for me and chris?
No, I didn't - and yes, please kill it
We really need a whisper function.
/whisper @TheEvilGreebo Something like this
And a Shout function:
/shout @TheEvilGreebo You're Wrong!!!!!!!!!
/stabintheface @ChrisCudmore NO I'M NOT!
Of course, we can always communicate via images of text to exclude greebo.
2
Can you see images in questions and answers?
Can we flag our own chats?
@TheEvilGreebo Done. I also deleted the room (which only means that you have to deliberately go looking for it)
@ChrisCudmore Yes
16:42
I'd try, but I don't want the inevitable blue invasion.
@ChrisCudmore not when i'm in the office
our security department brilliantly decided that imgur was a security risk

Continuous loop technique.
Wait... Did I wrap my wires the right way?
I prefer the pigtail, if I have room in the box.
@Tester101 Is it necessary to ground each switch? Or can I ground the box and let the flange connection do the job? (Assuming I test flange to ground screw with a meter)
Obviously we're not talking plastic boxes.
Depends on the switch. If it is labeled as "self grounding", you can use the yoke against a metal box for ground. However, you MUST ground the box using an approved grounding device. A switch CANNOT be used to ground the box.
NM cable qualify as approved grounding?
... is nm the right word?
the metal kind
For example, you can't connect the grounding conductor to a self grounding switch, install the switch, and call the box grounded.
NM = Nonmetallic Cable
whats the metallic kind called? (don't say metallic)
17:21
Armored Cable (Type AC) or Metal Clad (Type MC)
armored thats what i was thinking
Type AC has a bonding strip, which must be in "intimate" contact with the armor.
Not my wording.
Type MC you must use both the metallic sheath and the grounding conductor, for interlocked metal tape type. For smooth or corrugated type, the sheath or grounding conductor can be used.
makes me glad I'm not an electrician
17:29
@ChrisCudmore The continuous loop technique is very useful for grounding multiple devices in a box.
Like this?
Obviously behind the switches.
bib is about to hit 10K
Should be there now.
@ChrisCudmore You're not bonded to the service
first intimate, now bondage... wrong forum!

17:41
@Tester101 Assume that lower ground wire is continuous around the grounding screw to service.

Welcome to Project Update Thursday
Day 13 of waiting for the gas company to show up for locates. This is getting tiresome.
Called gas company. "Oh, you know what? I'm going to have to try to get someone else out there tomorrow."
19:15
@ChrisCudmore I know how you can get someone out there sooner. Try this one:
Having problems posting?
@ChrisCudmore "Hey guys, so I was digging a trench for a fence I'm putting in my backyard, and I think the augur I rented ran into something because it started clanging and making noise, wasn't sure what it was but when I managed to get it unstuck I started to smell something from the hole it dug... I think you might want to send someone out here"
Yeah, I'd kinda need to have something dug.
@ChrisCudmore Nah, guy shows up "What? That's all wrong no, they sent you out here for X, must have been a paperwork mistake.."
if you claim to smell gas, they will be there quick, but unfortunately they won't mark the buried pipes.
19:19
And we've got these "Call Before you dig - It's the law!" on every utility bill we get.
Not like I can plead ignorance.
Especially since I've already called.
Had someone hit a gas meter in the neighborhood with their car (which way is reverse?). Fire dept shut it down and gas company was there within 30 minutes or so. They don't mess around if there's a possible leak.
@ChrisCudmore It is the law, and there's no way they can take you to court for claiming to have dug before you called as long as you didn't actually do it :)
There's probably a phone fraud charge that could be laid if they really wanted to.
The paperwork will run through the system with confusion and it'll all be reconciled by someone later looking at it and saying "O, someone sent this guy out with the wrong information because the fellow at the address called for X and we told him we'd send him someone and we did send him someone..."
@ChrisCudmore really? You think they would even bother?
I doubt it. But they could.
I'm sure "I smell gas" would result in the fire department being dispatched as well.
19:23
@ChrisCudmore bit of a stretch. actually on the other hand if they call the fire dept, yeah you'd be in some shindig.
Probably just a fine, but I don't want to pay one.
The fire dept showing up is a fairly large fine and a sincere complaint
Anyone know anything about compressors? Oil or oil-less?
What CFM do I need for more continuous flow tools than a nailer?
If you say you got a whiff of gas now and then, they won't dispatch the fire department. That also happened to me, they replaced the meter and forgot the screw the new one on tight enough.
I seem to have a lot of experience with gas. :-/
19:52
@BMitch Didn't the guy wand it down to check after he was done? Or his wand wouldn't have been able to distinguish a leak from what seeped while he was working?
@JimmyHoffa good question, I didn't even know they had replaced the meter, which surprised the repair man since they're supposed to give you advance notice, knock when they show up, and leave a note when they're done if you weren't home.

Time to De-PUT
21:16
Thanks for joining this week's PUT
Doh, sorry
got distracted, thanks Chris. I need to have a calendar entry to end put like I have to kick it off.
No problem. Took me a while to figure out bold
the help button in the bottom right actually pulls up a markdown cheat sheet
Good to know.
Where do chat feature requests go?
@ChrisCudmore where do you submit them, or who reads them?
21:32
Where do I submit them.
404
gah.... That's a scary place
you can submit on meta.diy.stackexchange.com too
all go to the same place I think, and there's a you can use over there too
hmm, me checks if the Home Improvement Meta shortcut works
ohh, shiny, it does

Q: Can we get a whisper function in chat?

Chris CudmoreI had a conversation yesterday with a user who couldn't see all the content due to workplace firewall rules. (no imgur allowed - but pastebin is, go figure) He sent me his email in a me-him chat room, which apparently still isn't private. Fortunately a Moderator notice what was going on and del...

Q: Any way to send a personal message to another user?

a_m0dThere has been quite a few times that I wished I could send a message to another user on SO - not ask a question for everyone to see, but just a short message informing them of something or requesting them to do something. Are there any plans to allow this to happen in the future? Related: Ho...

Q: Alternative to Private Messaging in chat

Benjol(As discussed here) Despite Jeff being against it, I suspect that people are going to carry on asking for private/direct messaging. The main reason invoked that I have seen is being able to send other people 'private' contact details. I think that if you satisfy that need, it might remove some...

interesting how one gets over 200 votes and the other gets -3.

@NiallC. and @ChrisCudmore Thanks for noticing. Now I have to be even more careful about my rash and ill-informed answers.
22:07
@ChrisCudmore well, -2 already, they really are harsh on mso, should have used mdiy, except you'd get less good attention too.
22:17
Bunch of assholes.
