I cannot find the source of a constant noise & vibration that have recently (month or so) been happening in our single-family house. I've asked 2 different people, including our handyman, who checked several things, but so far only I have been able to hear/feel it.

@NiallC. we get an automatic flag when that happens. Theoretically, either the answer is bad, too generic, or the questions should be merged as dups. But I don't think the answer is all that bad, and merging the questions may lose one question mentioning a blocked return and another mentioning not wanting to adjust the dampers.
@TheEvilGreebo Do you realize that room is visible to anyone who clicks 'chat' from the main site? Do you want your PII removed? (it's too late for you to do it yourself)
@Tester101 Is it necessary to ground each switch? Or can I ground the box and let the flange connection do the job? (Assuming I test flange to ground screw with a meter)
Depends on the switch. If it is labeled as "self grounding", you can use the yoke against a metal box for ground. However, you MUST ground the box using an approved grounding device. A switch CANNOT be used to ground the box.
Type MC you must use both the metallic sheath and the grounding conductor, for interlocked metal tape type. For smooth or corrugated type, the sheath or grounding conductor can be used.

Had someone hit a gas meter in the neighborhood with their car (which way is reverse?). Fire dept shut it down and gas company was there within 30 minutes or so. They don't mess around if there's a possible leak.
@ChrisCudmore It is the law, and there's no way they can take you to court for claiming to have dug before you called as long as you didn't actually do it :)
The paperwork will run through the system with confusion and it'll all be reconciled by someone later looking at it and saying "O, someone sent this guy out with the wrong information because the fellow at the address called for X and we told him we'd send him someone and we did send him someone..."

If you say you got a whiff of gas now and then, they won't dispatch the fire department. That also happened to me, they replaced the meter and forgot the screw the new one on tight enough.
@BMitch Didn't the guy wand it down to check after he was done? Or his wand wouldn't have been able to distinguish a leak from what seeped while he was working?
@JimmyHoffa good question, I didn't even know they had replaced the meter, which surprised the repair man since they're supposed to give you advance notice, knock when they show up, and leave a note when they're done if you weren't home.
I had a conversation yesterday with a user who couldn't see all the content due to workplace firewall rules. (no imgur allowed - but pastebin is, go figure)
He sent me his email in a me-him chat room, which apparently still isn't private.
Fortunately a Moderator notice what was going on and del...
There has been quite a few times that I wished I could send a message to another user on SO - not ask a question for everyone to see, but just a short message informing them of something or requesting them to do something. Are there any plans to allow this to happen in the future?

Despite Jeff being against it, I suspect that people are going to carry on asking for private/direct messaging. The main reason invoked that I have seen is being able to send other people 'private' contact details.
I think that if you satisfy that need, it might remove some...
