@Tester101 For whatever reason, the city inspector insists that there only be 8 devices outlets on a circuit.
Tell him to show you the code reference. Inspectors are there to interpret the code, not make it up.
i always heard something like that
i always questioned how really big houses have so many lights in 1 room
says its based on load
watts = amps X volts

80% of 15 amps is 12 amps

X watts = 12 amps X 120 volts

X watts = 1440

1400 / 32 = 45

with a 32 watt light, i could put 45 of these lights on one dedicated circuit. please check my math. my plan will have NO MORE THAN 16 lights on each circuit. i should be safely within the limits.
It's all about volt-amperes (va), and estimates. For receptacles you have to estimate loads, since you have no idea what will be plugged in. For lighting circuits you can be more precise (if you know exactly what fixtures will be used), but you're still basically estimating.
Yeah, all the circuits in my house are mixed. The problems they have are that I'm not always going to be the owner of the house and they're trying to protect future owners.
And it doesn't matter in the end, because if he says "NOPE" he won't green-tag it and the permit won't ever get closed.
Is this a city code he's pulling on you over above the NEC, or what's the situation?
15:15
Pretty much. My guess is that it is a city policy designed to simplify the NEC because of the type of estimation that @Tester101 and @lsiunsuex are talking about.
Even the local electricians follow it (after talking to a few), so I'm not likely to be successful in challenging it.
Ask him if you can install a multi-bulb fixture instead of a single bulb fixture.
If it's a city code modification, he should still be able to show you the code.
There was a multi-bulb fixture there, so that's not an issue. I'm curious as well. I might just do it and then let him object to it if he wants to; it wouldn't take much to un-do it and I'm already monkeying around in there quite a bit because I'm widening a door and have to ask him how legal it is to replace the framing from the inside of the brick like I want to do.
Receptacles are estimated at 180 va, which would mean you can have 10 receptacles on a 15A circuit.
"Well, I'm replacing a four-bulb fixture with two single bulb fixtures. What's your problem, exactly?"
@KarlKatzke If you use CFLs, you can install a couple more fixtures too.
15:26
Two is really the max that the space will tolerate. It's a TINY, pitch-dark 80s bathroom.
I'm attempting to turn it into something that's salable 35 years after it was designed.
The original bathroom layout didn't even have room to turn around in, and a bunch of other stupid things like no separation between the vanity and the bedroom, so when your wife's putting on her makeup at 5am you get the bright lights in your face.
16:08
@BMitch Here's a new magnetic toy for you...
I think I got a similar jar of that from thinkgeek once
16:38
Really!?
Twerking () is a type of dancing in which the dancer, usually a woman, shakes her hips in an up-and-down bouncing motion, causing the dancer's buttocks to shake, "wobble" and "jiggle". According to the Oxford Dictionary Online, to twerk is "to dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance". The word twerking is of uncertain origin. Possibilities include a contraction of "footwork", or a portmanteau of twist and jerk. Possible origins Comparisons have been made with traditional African dances, for instance the Mapouk...
I expect to see it in the Oxford dictionary in a few years, especially after the most recent viral video was revealed as a Jimmy Kimmel stunt.
What is wrong with us?
Many, many things, but most of them are attributable to us being the descendants of apes.
16:46
It seems as if we may be regressing back to apes.
... and social scientists and the peanut gallery of social commentators has been saying that exact same thing for the past several thousand years every time we invent something 'new' that they don't like or understand.
Or, well, they've been saying it since evolution was thought of. They said less charitable things before that.
apols to future generations, that have to wade through our crap.
Eh, it'll be forgotten just like Avocado-colored appliances and Vanilla Ice (who, by the way, is still performing) mostly were, except when someone needed something to make fun of.
Ooh. Macrame!
oh, that's right
16:59
go figure; i'm actually home to watch it and apple isnt live streaming it
We died as a species with this:
lit·er·al·ly
/ˈlitərəlē/
Adverb

In a literal manner or sense; exactly: "the driver took it literally when asked to go straight over the traffic circle".
Used to acknowledge that something is not literally true but is used for emphasis or to express strong feeling.

Synonyms
literatim - word for word - verbatim - to the letter
The numbers got stripped out.
Second line of the definition.
We need to go back to hand writing dictionaries. Things are less likely to get in, if somebody actually has to write it out 100,000,000 times.
OK, everyone off of @Tester101's lawn!
What future generations will hear, when they study our time. "derp, derp, derp."
17:23
Huh. So they were right about the 5C.
good thing i spent $30 on iWork suite for iPad now that its free
17:50
So am I going blind or is this a right-hand thread screw and you need to turn the nut to the left (like normal) to loosen
That's a right hand screw that you need to loosen to the left.
Counter clockwise.
So we can all pick on @BMitch then: diy.stackexchange.com/a/31482/11274
or the Michael's edit
so far I think I'm very happy with my 5
i dunno - biometric built in
i'm not a crazy paranoid f' but thats pretty cool
if your phone gets stolen, wipe it and you're done
who cares?
18:02
just think its coo
and if you forgot your phone at home and you need some info on it and your wife's fingerprint isn't on your phone, then what? At least you can tell someone the passcode
@Tester101 I had a 'real' electrician come out and he said that that interlock kit, no way he would do it
@Aaron Good. I wouldn't do it either.
so 5 dropped completely, interesting. I'm surprised they didn't take the opportunity to kill the 4s and make the entire lineup lightning-only
true
unless they are and just not noting it
they have changed existing products in the past and just not announced it

yeah yeah
comeon - theres still time left; i want a watch dammit!!!!!!!
@lsiunsuex I did try my friend's pebble and it was pretty interesting. Not 100% sure it's reayd for prime-time yet, but definitely interesting
I've got extra pebbles if you want one
how much?
idk like $120
18:13
the one thing I do miss is being able to see the time in the dark without pulling out the phone
@Jason how often do you have to charge it?
I charge it every other Monday but it dies every other Saturday. I always leave the charger at work
It used to last ~5-7 days but they got alot better firmware
so just shy of 2 weeks?
yeah
and I presume that is after the initial 1-2 weeks of pushing buttons on it all the time?
it will last ~2 days the first couple times because snake and tetris on it is addictive
exactly
18:15
$120 could buy a lot of pebbles.
I have phone call and txt msg alerts only, I turned off e-mail and facebook
I bought the kickstarter 5 pack and use one and gf uses one
So I have white, grey, and orange NIB
or my used black one for cheaper :-P
18:36
@Aaron I don't leave my phone at home; I bought a case that makes it also my wallet. I just carry phone and car keys. My next house will have door locks that unlock in the presence of my phone's bluetooth signal, (and a hardware key backup). And one of these days, they'll figure out pairing your phone with the car's ignition via bluetooth and you can unlock and start your car with it, and I'll stop carrying keys.
and the higher end cars are starting to come with it built in; mercedes, tesla, etc...
@KarlKatzke they already have all that but no car company is going to include it. Bluetooth security is weak. You can buy a RFID car/key and include that
no, the tesla's do
from starting, to charge state, to range, the app is tight with the car
not starting, unless the brand new one does
its no 20k ford obviously, but if you have the cash...
18:39
tesla is a toy company anyways :-P
Well, I can get an App from Honda if I'd purchased the remote start feature for my new RDX, but it runs through the XM radio connection I think, not a proximity signal.
remote climate start; which is the only reason to remote start an all electric car anyways
true
I just install a computer and wifi, been doing that for a decade
the people complaining about it only staying on for 30 minutes are funny
$30 wifi scanner as my fob and you're set
18:41
30 minutes is plenty to bring a car up or down to a comfortable temp
I'm not sure that the Viper system would work with all the other integration and electronics in something as advanced as the electronics systems in newer high-end cars.
I mean, the level of integration between the four or five separate computer systems in the RDX is pretty impressive. I'm not sure gutting or bypassing any of that would work, much less would be smart.
It's not a $20k ford or a Scion FR-S or something where the parts are actually separate.
i know strait up mechanics that rebuild engines in their spare time that wont touch new cars; their just to complex without the proper equipment
like you said, bypass one of the cpu's by accident or purposely and you'll basically "brick" the car
Fuel injection timing sucks when it's worng
ignition timing is worse but your car will typically atleast run if it's a little off
Yeah, what jason said. We have three cars -- a new RDX, which my fiancee uses mostly, my old Accord, which I run errands in if I choose to leave the house (I telecommute) and the 1996 diesel F-350 that is our mobile dumpster and construction vehicle.
The F-350 and Accord are doable at home. The RDX... no Fing way.
I don't think I'll even change the oil in that, and I have access to dealer manuals.
@Jason My reference of turn towards the right was from looking at the bolt from the side. You're still spinning it counter clockwise when looked at from the end. I can't think of a good way to write that so someone won't be confused.
@Tester101 ohh, shiny!
Re: twerking, Jimmy got me:
19:02
we went to a home show over the weekend and there was a lock guy there
I talked to him about z-wave locks and he said he didn't trust them because of the wireless (in)security
I was like, what's more likely, people with a rock to smash your windows, or hackers driving by with a z-wave war-driver
Since someone can easily make a hardware key with just a photograph of your house key, and normal home-grade locks are so easy to pick or bypass anyway, I think he's relying more on a perception of security than actual security.
she has nice assets; i'd like to include them in my next git push
Haha. When you live in a box with glass covered holes, security in only as strong as the glass.
But it sort of takes someone with an IT background who understands a little bit of security thinking to really parse that argument out -- most of the sheep just nod and try to decide if Schlage or Kwikset are more secure.
and not to mention which, locks and other 'secure' z-wave elements do have some sort of encryption involved, not that I have a background to really understand it, but it is different than just light switches etc
19:08
until we invent transparent aluminum
then someone will see glass covered holes; try to hit it with a hammer; realize its the new super amazing transparent aluminum and walk away
I think the Z-wave stuff is still brute force-able, but it probably takes more keys than you can easily transmit to it. blog.opensecurityresearch.com/2013/07/…
... and then they come back with a can opener, because -- aluminum.
or a plasma cutter; depends on what you readily have available on hand...
Angle grinder would probably be overkill.
or open the unlocked back door
19:18
So reading that article, there are 4.3 billion possible HomeID keys (which just allows you into the network), and the EEPROM in the dongle that you'd have to burn for each attempt would only take a couple hundred thousand writes before it'd burn out.
Then again, if the burglar is toting a sledge hammer, your wall is a vulnerability too.
Otherwise, you'd have to write a lot of radio software to implement the protocol, and they weren't even able to get to testing if there's any protection in the node software against brute-force attempts, such as even basic rate limiting, that'd drastically drive up the time.
So, yeah, I'm going in through the window, wall, or by knocking the door in. Bet the hinges weren't hung right.
19:30
thats, how you break into a house
The polish something
only version i could find of it
they "renamed" it like the Polish Extracter because it was a Polish Standoff or something
is there an SE for small explosives? "what kind of explosive can be used in this barrel to launch a 4ft sq grappling hook through plywood / drywall"
19:36
Generally, I'm not concerned about the guy that wants to get into MY home. There's really nothing I can do about it. What I can do things about is the opportunist, who wants to get into ANY home. I don't have to be absolutely secure for him. I just have to be less attractive a target then my neighbour.
Heh. It's probably built like a potato gun; your problem isn't controlling the explosive, it's controlling all the pressure so it goes in the right way.
It's like running from a bear. I can't run faster than a bear. But all I have to do is run faster than you.

@ChrisCudmore That's only true if we both run in the same direction, and neither of us are slathered in honey.
I have to wonder why we were in the woods slathered in honey.
I never said it was me, that was slathered in honey.
So why you would be slathered in honey, I couldn't say.
FYI, how it got here: Bluetooth->Twerking->unbreakable glass->Small Explosives->Guy(s) slathered in Honey
2
Twerking almost always leads to being slathered in honey.
"Hi Mario,

seriously? that, just wasted my time
what exactly from my linkedin profile made you think i like rap exactly?
i would of quoted deadmau5 atleast; losts of programmers listen to EDM, not rap
20:38
Why is corny in quotes?
those were her quotes
I know, but why?
no idea
Hmmm. You don't want to work there.
Tell them you'll only work for them, if they teach their HR rep. how to write professionally.
