Q: How can I hang heavy objects on a wall, without leaving any marks?

Eiyrioü von KauyfCommand Hooks don't hold very much weight wise and I would like to mount heavy objects - e.g. a whiteboard ... any ideas? (yes this is drywall - I cannot leave any marks in it ).

with magic!!!
... probably gonna get smacked for that...
i hope to score atleast a +1 for thinking outside of the box / offering one of the most complex solution known to man

It seems to me that StackOverflow is becoming a phone book, instead of a content source. Most of the accepted answers I've been coming across lately, are simply "Yo dawg, I heard you want to do something in code, so I provided you this link to some content on the web that is similar to what you want to do.".
for sure; there is so much published code out there, its easier to just link to something then to help the op come up with a solution
blame github - one way or another, someone wrote something to do what you want and posted it there
In essence, StackOverflow is becoming Let me google that for you.
but -- isn't that what the world has become anyways? i mean, aside from engineers at google / facebook / ... who actually build new db systems or languages for themselves and open source them (most of the time) no one exactly is curing the cancers of programming on their own; their just regurgitating the same code over and over again, but with different text / colors / photos
i sure as hell am not - i take people's ideas, apply a pretty basic formula i've developed over the years and get paid for it. i'm not building anything truly ground breaking or out of the box. which is depressing in its own right but money is money
I guess it's different when you're just learning something, as opposed to when you're trying to make money doing something.
it looses its luster when you start making money for it

I guess StackOverflow just isn't for learning.
i have thought about becoming a genetic engineer over the years; i think some of the ideas / things they do are in line with programming - a video i watched yesterday was about doctors taking the HIV virus and modifying it to kill cancer cells; thats F'ing awesome. but, thats probably also 8+ years of schooling and years and years of research - and i can't just drop my life to start a new one...
When I was learning C#, I was also frustrated by StackOverflow because nobody ever told you what libraries you needed. And they over used var.
When I was learning, I wrote all my code in a text editor (no suggestions), and I typed out the full name of objects (System.Collections.Generic.List<string> myList;).
SO to me is a place i go (or comes up in a google search) that usually has a quick solution for a stupid problem i've run into. its not a place to learn something front to back; its a cliff notes / quick reference of random, sometimes common, problems and solutions
It helped me learn where stuff was, and how it was all connected.
i never use a IDE for php programming; strait text editor with color coding; thats all.
13:15
I guess I'm using it wrong. Just wish it wouldn't show up in search so much then.
objc - yeah, i use xcode, but theres just to many GD files to deal with without using xcode...
show up in search == get traffic == get ad revenue. the perfect circle of a successful internet website
seriously need to stop reading gizmodo.com - its garbage gizmodo.com/…
"Holy Crap It's Good This Airplane Wasn't Flying When Its Engine Exploded" sensationalist headline at its finest

We need to educate people that post link only answers on how SE works. Any volunteers to handle this one? :)

A: What are the different types of drywall anchors, and what are the advantages of each?

Joel SpolskyThis article has a beautiful summary of the different types of anchors.

Q: How can I build pull-down shelving for kitchen appliances?

parsley72We have a relatively small kitchen and having appliances like the microwave on the benchtop takes up space all the time when they're not being used. What I'd like to do is build some pull-down shelves that normally sit high up but can be pulled down and locked when in use, preferably with a sprin...

i'm confused - how was a shitty answer awarded rep by someone with no rep, but yet the answer wasn't marked as the accepted answer
@lsiunsuex well, he gets 100 for the assn bonus, then he got a few from the question. why he hasn't accepted the answer makes no sense whatsoever
@lsiunsuex No one else had a better answer. And not awarding the answer because it's a bad answer and they still want the question to be open for something better.

You know what we need? A set of questions that are frequently asked on the site -- How do I wire a 3-way, How do I hang something on a wall, etc. conveniently packaged for newbs. I would be inclined to call it a FAQ, but that label seems to be used for something else entirely. I'd re-label that as a "How to use the site" document. Because even though it's called a FAQ, no-one has ever actually asked those questions.
learning center - an aggregate of all accepted answers reformatted and cleaned up
like the blog, but with a more formal structure
@ChrisCudmore We don't have a faq anymore. Now we have help
and about
We need clippy
It looks like you're trying to wire a 3-way switch...
How is frequent determined?
Ideally, it would be the number of times a question is referenced in a Close-ED

anyone have a preferred internal vulnurability scanner they like ? paid or otherwise...
In Ontario, you get a colonoscopy in your 40s. It's free, and scopes out all those internal vulnerabilities.
i'll keep that mind for 7 years from now - thanks!
then again, i'm lactose intollerent - my colon is clensed about once a week, free of charge
@ChrisCudmore So, bad news, we're terminating your SE account.
just kidding
@BMitch Yay. Now I can get some work done.

A: Can a NEMA 6-15 Device be connected to a NEMA 6-20 receptacle?

cray54Ideally, a fuse or breaker should not be rated higher than the weakest link in a system. If a piece of equipment is rated below the fuse or breaker rating, it becomes a sacrificial device in the event where it draws more than its current rating but less than the fuse or breaker rating. A device...

"This is a topless pool and from the hours that we were there (noon-5pm) there were at least 15-20, probably more, women going topless. Most were late 30's and 40's and slightly overweight. But there was 1 porn star looking girl going topless and at least 5 or so young attractive early twenties girls. "
thats very a "on the 1 hand, theres some really pretty girls almost naked i can stair at" and "on the other hand, 50 year old overweight women naked obstructing my view i have to stair at"
If your device operates outside of its "design parameters", it's not a "sacrificial device". It's broken.

is there some kind of script that does the heavy lifting to make something like that? seams like it would be incredibly time consuming to find all those clips and piece them together

Q: Energy conservation during air-conditioning for room with 88 square feet glass wall exposed to approx 10 Celsius higher external temperature

OptimightHow to get maximum benefit of daylight while optimizing air-conditioner benefit for a glass wall (currently) of size 11" * 8" (total 88 square feet exposed). Facts: The glass wall never gets direct sun rays. The external temperature (in summer) is around 45 Celsius. The indoor temperature is 35 ...

No idea how to re-title this
american length measurements by metric temperature measurements - must be from Canada, @ChrisCudmore
@Tester101 How do I optimize for energy conservation with a large glass wall?
@waxeagle Works for me.
I don't think we get 45 degree heat here EVER.
Correction: Looks like we did hit it a few times in the 30's
In various locations in Canada, extreme temperatures are often recorded. Here is a list of 15 extreme hot and cold temperature recorded in Canada for the past 120 years, not necessarily the hottest or coldest 15 but some are shown for selected cities or regions, i.e. Toronto. These are officially recognized extreme temperatures by Environment Canada. Hottest Temperature Readings (selected locations, provincial records) {| class="wikitable" |- ! Date Recorded ! Location ! Temperature |- | July 5, 1937 | Midale, Saskatchewan and Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan | 45.0 °C |- | July 11, 1936 | St. ...
Oh Look! A new user actually put his location in his profile!

How's the girl watching going?
no wifi :(
and ATT wants an additional $20 / month to tether to my phone; ridiculous
I meant real girls. Not internet porn.
saw a few last night when i took the wife to work out in the park
no wifi in the park, basterds - I want a N access point on every tree over 50 feet tall
Yeah... That's not exactly how it's supposed to be done...
You're supposed to leave the wife behind for girlwatching.
she wanted to work out, not i

Anybody know how the Toro "easy start" works?
I have a Toro mower, and as long as you pull the cord from point A to point B, the mower starts.
I'm quite impressed, but can't think what they could do different to make starting so easy.
I've had the mower for 2 years, and have never had to pull the cord twice. It starts the first pull every time, no matter how fast/slow I pull the cord.

mechanics.stackexchange.com might just be the place for you.
It's a really good question. I never thought about it.
I'd guess it coils up a spring and releases it once you reach point B
But they usually start with only a foot or so of pull. So it's not like we're getting a mechanical advantage here.
Wow, this site use frames and requires IE: kohlerplus.com/main_frame.asp
Well. Let me at least try with my non-compliant browser rather than shut it down.
Either of you got a model number?
Yeah, but read the reviews and instructions. It takes multiple coatings and few people had good success with it
I know most reviews are made from complaints than good reviews in general but IDK, I saw this product a little while ago and I'm still curious
