A: Did the recent trend among stock brokers to switch to commission-free stock trades result in a degradation in trade execution quality?

Bob BaerkerMaker-taker fees have existed for over 20 years since the Island ECN created the concept. For those unfamiliar with this, those who trade at the bid or ask (takers) pay a very small fee. Those who provided liquidity, or 'makers', receive a slightly smaller fee than the 'taker' fee, with the exch...

"often at inferior prices" - this is illegal in the US (see: Reg NMS). If you had proof that it was happening you would be whistleblowing, not posting it on SE. In fact, execution via those firms is typically at better prices than on any public market (the difference is called "price improvement").
This isn't about NBBO violations. Read about possible poorer execution when orders are routed to dark pools.
Brokers are beholden to NBBO whether they route to lit markets or dark pools. The thing you're claiming happens would absolutely be an NBBO violation.
There are lots of articles out on the web that explain that poorer execution can occur in dark pools. If you believe that all of them are wrong, go argue with them.
There are lots of conspiracy theories on the internet. That does not mean they are true. Here's a reputable source: investopedia.com/terms/p/… - note that the firms you've mentioned are considered "liquidity providers" and are required to "match or improve those prices [the NBBO]" if they execute the order themselves.

If Investopedia is indeed a reputable source of information as you claim then perhaps you should read some of the INVESTOPEDIA articles that discuss poorer trade fills on dark pools.
I've noticed you haven't managed to come up with any links to such articles
"dark pools" is a fairly broad term, and I suspect you're simply mixing up two distinct concepts that both go by that name
I will say, as an employee at a liquidity provider, that the SEC seems pretty sure that we're not allowed to do the thing you're claiming we do

No response, I see. Would you mind if I edited out the incorrect information in the second half of your answer? The first half is quite informative.

Getting filled at or better than the NBBO doesn't mean you got good execution. If it did, you could just send market orders for everything.

I've got the proof. At 1-2c per share price difference it's not worth a percent commission to find the cheapest stock provider.
