I miss the ability to vote to close questions.

why can't you anymore

@lsiunsuex Mod votes are binding, when we vote, it just happens immediately, no waiting for community consensus.
I do a lot of downvoting now where in the past I would have cast a close vote.

Q: When to stop a backsplash?

andrewliuWe have a kitchen with a U shaped with a peninsula that divides the kitchen and the living room/dining room. If the end of the peninsula is against a black wall, how far up the wall do we stop the backsplash? I'm also assuming the backsplash will be stopped at the end of the counter top so it doe...

vtc n/c

I still think that SE did a terrible job on the UI design of moderator tools, the same buttons do different things depending on who you are. They should have added new buttons, and some instructions about when to press those buttons would have also been helpful.
@TheEvilGreebo that's one of my downvotes for today.

Ayup
i figured you were looking for vtc s

1:26 PM
atleast up vote my answer before you close it, dammit. could use the points
i used pictures!

Yes, but you said it yourself:
As the rest have said, its purely aesthetic.
still, they are pretty pictures :)

@lsiunsuex Note that if the question gets deleted, you'll lose the rep

figures

Focus on good answers to good questions - less waste of effort :)

Focus on great answers to good questions - less waste of effort, and more value to the community.

@Tester101 Baby steps!

i've never agreed to closing questions on SE

Actually, just focus on general knowledge questions. You'll get more up votes if people know whether or not your answer is correct.

i understand why they are - but until SE encompasses everything that makes up this world, if a question doesn't fit in another forum, why close it?

@lsiunsuex Because there is no answer.
SE focuses on questions that can be answered.

Yep. Aesthetic questions are purely subjective - there is no right/wrong way to do them.

1:41 PM
maybe people are stuck though - like programming - not everything has an answer - sometimes something needs to be talked out to to see why it doesn't work like that or why its a wrong way

What in programming doesn't have an answer?
Only subjective questions, in my experience.

@lsiunsuex That's what the chat room is for

@TheEvilGreebo X/0

@Tester101 That's got an answer - the answer is infinity, which = div/0 error :)

yes, the mods of SE are always right - i'll be quiet

@lsiunsuex Don't be petulant. It's not appealing.

being restrictive isn't appealing either

@lsiunsuex Ah, but that's subjective.

@lsiunsuex When questions don't have answers, they belong on yahoo answers.

i hole heartedly understand the point of the SE model - good questions get answers and this is a community to produce good answers to help people
bad questions and bad answers help no one
i get that

*whole ;) hole hearted is fatal

1:44 PM
@lsiunsuex I'm not always right, but I always try the follow the rules that SE gives me to follow. It's their game, they get to make the rules, and we get to chose whether we want to play.

@BMitch Yup. Their servers, their bandwidth, their rules. Kinda like how you can't overrule FB's terms of service with a status update.

but because a question doesn't fit on any given forum, doesn't mean that question is wrong or bad - if it goes no where else, subjective or not, it belongs in the closest forum that matches the subject(ive) matter

@TheEvilGreebo I had to do a facepalm when a friend of mine in IT at a dot-com copied that status.

@lsiunsuex SE is not a forum.

@lsiunsuex I'm more inclined to let a non-subjective close-to-but-not-quite-on-topic question stand than a subjective on-topic one, but like tester said - this isn't a forum

1:46 PM
question / answer site, yes, i know

While I don't like turning away people who are looking for help, it's a necessary evil.
I usually try to give some advice/answers in a comment, before closing a question.

god knows how SE makes money (if they make money) - to send someone to yahoo answers - you may as well set it on fire (if there is any)

That way the user doesn't walk away empty handed.

@lsiunsuex they make money with some ads and redirecting various links to referral links (e.g. Amazon)

@lsiunsuex You could always check eHow

1:51 PM
Don't forget ExpertSexchange

@BMitch Does that still exist?

dont get me wrong - i hang out here cause i like you guys and you've helped me greatly - i just don't agree with the tactic sometimes. have a tag called subjective or something. don't close it cause it doesn't fit this pre determined mold of what a QA site is supposed to be.

@Tester101 huh, never noticed they went under
you can tell how often I go there

Haven't seen any hits in search results lately.

@lsiunsuex That would be a meta tag, which SE has decided isn't allowed

1:53 PM
i'm sure you guys track tag usage - if i a subjective tag gets used often, obviously theres a need for change

@Tester101 the new landing page has a bunch of non-functional links, I'm guessing someone bought the domain

@lsiunsuex You've turned "desire" and "need" into synonyms here.

@lsiunsuex That's what Area51 is for.
If you think there is a need, start a proposal.

SE is not a democracy. It's private property and while changing to meet demand is an option, the "need" is up to those who own and operate it.

@TheEvilGreebo understandable

1:56 PM
Nice thing about the net - if you think you have a better idea than someone else, there's lots of room for you to try to do better. :) (No, I'm not saying if you don't like it leave)

@TheEvilGreebo Sort of. The DIY.SE community could come together and decide to allow subjective questions, if they wanted to.

@Tester101 Ok, fair point, but SE can still overrule. I mean, if DIY.SE decided that porn was ok... ;)

Hmmm. Wonder if there is a porn proposal on area51?

We could start one...
Good sample question: "What's materials are most popular for making your own sex toys?"
Bad sample question: "What position is better?"

2:30 PM
It's slightly amusing that the sexuality proposal failed, so a Human sexuality proposal was started.
Was there too much goat f***ing going on in the first proposal?
Here you go @TheEvilGreebo Sex Games & Toys

following! ;)

It's also funny that the Idea Pitching proposal was closed.
The Toys proposal has the best description. "for ask question in toy playing.".
Damn, only 4 followers of Peace on Earth.

I inform people that they missed the hyphen in Spider-Man's name. I have a lot of time on my hands.

@lsiunsuex You think it's an actual person, or just a bot?

5:47 PM
@Respecthehyphen You forgot to put a period at the end of your sentence. #RespectThePeriod
that's the best counter to that I've seen
it's got to be a real person, the replies are too erratic (unless the bot process keeps dying)

Oh good, @Tester101 beat me to closing a question. Now I haven't closed as many questions as all the other moderators combined. :)

A: Are there any dangers associated with rigid foam insulation?

Paul HearseyYes, foam board offgasses. All plasics, some woods (pine), wood products, paints and adhesives do. Some offgas products are more of a concern than others. For example, the formaldehyde emanating from OSB, MDF, particle board and plywood is perhaps the single greatest hazard in North American home...

Having said this, flame retardants are in damn near everything: all upholstery materials, draperies, mattresses, carpets.....I'm finding this to be even more difficult to eliminate than formaldehyde.
So like, you can either breathe in a little bit of flame retardant, or your house can burn down

@Aaron If your house catches on fire, it's probably going to burn down anyway (or burn enough that it's no longer inhabitable). Flame retardants only slow the flame (so you have a better chance to escape), not stop it.
@BMitch is that just this month?

@Tester101 The stats I looked at were, and I've been trying to tame down my close trigger finger.
