I don't even need them to change one thing, but some of the organization. Put the *rules* (which, if you think of it, are like 5% of the core books) all up front in one place. Characters work like this. Ability checks/saves/attacks work like this. Spells work like this. Monsters work like this. Magic items work like this. Encounters work like this. Adventures work like this. Long-form campaigns can work like this or like this or like this. Here's a list of things that, taken together, create the sense of a setting.

3:14 PM
@NautArch Doesn't 3.5 have alignment restrictions on classes? Donno if PF abolished them

@NautArch In PF1e yes, monks had to be lawful, barbarians chaotic, paladins LG, and druids any neutral

@nitsua60 different philosophies here, I think - I tend to vibe with games that deliberately structure themselves around a given framework enough that separating the system and a specific game in that way is more difficult. I think the D&D-that-is can't easily be separated from some of the implicit setting elements that come from the classes, for example, and I think what the system focuses on and the way the classes interact with that are... yeah, tied together
to be clear, I'm on the "I enjoy D&D but I think there are vastly better games around" end of things, but I think what I mean by "better" differs from what you want.

3:32 PM
@LizWeir I guess I'm just saying that the dozen classes listed in the PHB are given way too much prominence, and that at the system level the classes are really Stick, Sparkle, and Skill. Because at the rules-level, you can attack, you can try to avoid magic, and you can use your stats.
Each example class is just some mixture of those, with setting elements laid on.
@LizWeir :thumbsup: =)

@nitsua60 That might be one of those things that seems like a good idea when you have a fair amount of RPG experience and are thinking like a GM: "Here's the toolkit I can use to build and run a campaign." Packaging it as a complete system-and-setting reduces the barrier to entry for new players.

@nitsua60 I think that's deliberate. In my experience, many players don't are all that much about the details of the system. Their first (and sometimes only) question is "But what can I play?", and the answer to that is the classes, not some generic explanation about what characters potentially can have. The "systems as a toolbox" view is far from universal and in many groups only taken by the GM, if at all.

@MikeQ gotcha, just making sure :)

@nitsua60 But yes, the PHB classes are in a weird space between "high-level archetypes" and "premade example characters you can customize". It's really unclear why they're segmented the way they are.

@MarkWells I'm saying that you can still package that all together. I just want a little reorganization and an up-front, sincere, boldfaced statement that "these are examples, people. Make it your own! That's D&D!!!"

3:40 PM
@NautArch In PF2 I think champions (paladin replacement) are the only ones with alignment requirement, which each subclass having its own requirement (LG, NG, CG). This is already an issue for a player in the test game I'm in. They want to be a paladin (LG) of a CG deity, and they're hesitant to disobey the rules text.

@ACuriousMind Right. Last night I was talking about how I think campaigns start off best when "what can I play" is met by "well, what do we want to do/what stories do we want to tell?"

@MikeQ My question was initially about a site question, but I"m actually starting to have alignment issues in a campaign I'm playing in. We'll see where it goes and what happens, but i'm a bit worried about party cohesion.

@NautArch sovereign glue will solve those problems.
Ohh... cohesion. Nvm.

hehehe
I'm not sure that playing an evil character is the right fit in a party for Avernus.

@nitsua60 This exists, it's called "OSR" :)

3:43 PM
@NautArch Probably not, although you could have a table discussion about the differences between an evil-aligned hero vs an evil NPC, and what that means in terms of actions and boundaries

@MikeQ i'm not the DM, but i brought up the concerns to the dm
And i'm not evil, i actually chose neutral so that I wasn't and it gave me freedom for pursuing be better while still failing at doing so at times.

@nitsua60 Paralysis of choice is real. When the answer to "What can I play?" is "Everything you want to.", the answer is often "I don't know, really.". When you present them X archetypes to choose from, many people have a much easier time filling in the blanks with their imagination (or even going "Hey, can we change this part even though it's not written as a choice?") rather than coming up with something from scratch.

@nitsua60 XD

@MarkWells Yeaaaahhh... there's plenty of OSR that I want to stay plenty away from, though. I'm asking for WotC, the preeminent purveyor of RPG goods in the world, to be placing at the fore "these are tools for you to make not just an adventure, but a game. Enjoy!"
@ACuriousMind Yes, to all this. My thing, though, is when presenting those choices, to start with "okay, do you want to play a train heist? Monster hunters? The Dirty Dozen?" And then start looking at things like classes/races.

4:05 PM
see that's the level I'd be looking at game systems

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Shortened url in answer (56): Scribing a scroll with an enhanced Spell-Like Ability by Jitendra Singh on rpg.SE (@Rubiksmoose)

@LizWeir Yes. If you're picking an archetype for what kind of group this is and what kind of story it's in, that's the level where it also makes sense to pick a system that supports that.

4:21 PM
Sure. If I could get anyone around me to try anything other than 5e :sadface:

@nitsua60 Double sadface.

But! I might start playing again next week (traveller, with a GM I haven't been able to play with for 3 or 4 years), and I have a plan to make non-D&D happen. So this could be a good summer :happyface:

(which reminds me, I still have vague ideas to run a Stack one-shot of something for Stack folks at some point....)
@nitsua60 huzzah!

Is there a sign up sheet somewhere

In the planning office. At the bottom of the basement stairs (missing last step). Down the hallway (the bulb's out). Through the door (sign says "beware of tiger"). In the (locked) filing cabinet.

4:37 PM
Hey, at least that sounds more feasible than any of my attempts to get a campaign off the ground. I've mostly given up running anything anymore.

4:51 PM
@MikeQ hah! As if I'd ever be that organized XD

SoulstreakThe druid subclass Circle of the Stars from Unearthed Arcana: Subclasses, Part 3 has the 2nd-level feature Starry Form, part of the description of which states: You gain a bonus action that you can use to make a ranged spell attack, hurling a luminous arrow that targets a creature you can see wi...

Q: Why are Ghouls not proficient with their bite attack?

AnagkaiLooking at the Ghoul and the Ghast from the MM, we see that they both have a bite and a claw attack. The claw attack has two points more for the attack modifier which seems to indicate that the proficiency bonus is not added to the bite attack. Now, bite has slightly higher damage, but claw has a...

@KorvinStarmast I've never run Traveler before actually! If I were to run something it would likely be Honey Heist or Masks or Roll for Shoes.

@KorvinStarmast my conversation went so-so

7:17 PM
can someone look at this post for me and tell me if the images actually showed up and they're just gone on my end or if they're actually not there please?

@Himitsu_no_Yami no images

figures...
When I pasted them they showed up twice so I removed one from each and posted and now they're not showing up
looks like they're there post-edit... Wonder why they showed up twice after pasting but only once after posting

i see one image now

Should be two. One showing chatlog and one showing the attributes page
but in the post box while editing they duped themselves

gotcha, i see 'em
didn't realize they were stacked

7:22 PM
yeah
hopefully what I'm asking for is something I can do

@Rubiksmoose would love to finally play roll for shoes ...
@NautArch I guess that is better than it going badly

@KorvinStarmast true true. I think it's mostly a playstyle difference, but we'll just have to see how it goes.
He's said he's not trying to break the game, so at least there's that.

Baby steps 👍

@KorvinStarmast I'm the one who inserted Traveller into the conversation. Making a character this afternoon =)

@KorvinStarmast Yeah. I had the same issues when he was a player for me and that's probably coloring my viewpoint, too.

7:46 PM
Reading Roll20 forums gave me an interesting idea for Warlocks
instead of using CHA for their casting, use Sanity

8:01 PM
@Himitsu_no_Yami Sanism issues aside, one could plausibly argue that charisma already corresponds to ego or psychological state, to some extent

I don't follow
Also may or may not be more applicable to GOOlocks

Someone could say that for the purposes of their warlock features, their charisma score indicates "sanity". As though higher charisma means being more able to handle their patron's psychic influences, or something along those lines.

but then what would be the point of the sanity score being mentioned in the DMG (even as an optional thing) if they could just use CHA

That's more along the lines of "sanity" as a kind of mental hit point pool
Although either way, "sanity" is one of those problematic terms that goes to weird places if you try to quantify it as a normative thing. There was a discussion about it here a few days back.
From a mechanical perspective, it's probably desirable to keep the hit point resource separate from the resource that's used for actively doing things, unless you want a positive feedback loop of power loss

Well, now you're making me think about a blood mage class that casts its spells using its hit points as spell slots
just reading that made it pop into my head

8:17 PM
@Himitsu_no_Yami That sounds like the Blood Maledict of the Blood Hunter class.

@Himitsu_no_Yami For that not to be heinously broken, it needs to reduce their maximum hit points.

@MarkWells That's fair

Not necessarily for very long, but long enough that you don't get unlimited spells because LOLhealingspirit

Or maybe it should be that those hit points can't be healed by anything other than certain blood mage spells with life steal... (or maybe those spells can increase your max HP temporarily)

That's a bookkeeping nightmare

8:22 PM
I know it is

and a poor conceptual fit if the point is that you're sacrificing yourself

I feel like there definitely needs to be some potential life steal so they don't just kill themselves

In the case of the Blood Hunter, Blood Maledicts have limited uses per rest.

I think blood mage would also be a full caster sorta. Just that blood mage spells can't be cast using spell slots

I'm thinking something like: As a material component, all blood mage spells consume a number of pints of fresh humanoid blood equal to their slot level. Draining a pint of blood from a humanoid causes them to lose 20% of their maximum hit points. These hit points return after a week. (Cantrips cost a single drop of blood, which costs no hit points.)

8:27 PM
spellcasting focus could be a sacrificial dagger or something maybe

@Himitsu_no_Yami maybe, yeah, in which case the blood shouldn't be classified as a material component, but strictly substitute for a spell slot
(even though it is a material component)

make it comparable to the royalty component from AI
@MarkWells Also, looking at this maybe it should be more like 10%. Otherwise a 5th level spell kills them

@Himitsu_no_Yami It says "a humanoid", not "yourself" :)
but also, you might allow using multiple donors

@MarkWells true but I still don't think that's quite right

for a human at least
wait no it's not
math fail

8:34 PM
how much is a pint then

it's more like 10%, yes

1 pint = 0.125 US gallon

but really, the question to ask would be "What level of spell demands a human sacrifice?" and then set it based on that

Given that wizards and sorcerers exist and are able to cast up to 9th level spells with no repercussions I don't feel it would be right for blood mage to have to sacrifice a human for even a 9th level spell

(Warning: playing this class with a murderhobo / minmaxer mindset will likely lead to some pretty dark places that your group may not be interested in going.)

8:43 PM
Also I used wizards and sorcerers as my examples because theirs is what I call "Arcane" magic that they cast all by themselves as opposed to paladins/clerics which use "Divine" magic. (and warlocks use Arcane magic (exception being celestial warlocks) but theirs is a borrowed power from their patron)

@Himitsu_no_Yami Oh, but the cool thing is, you don't have to be a level 17 blood mage. You can have 9th-level spell slots right now.
(no, I haven't thought through what blood mages would get as they level up, I'm just playing Idea Tennis here)

but then you run into balance issues of level 1 player sacrificing someone to cast Wish or some other 9th level spell
perhaps their level up features could be making their use of blood more efficient and being able to use the same amount of blood to do more and more powerful things?

A mechanic that lets players sacrifice NPCs for power seems like a bad idea for a game meant to simulate heroic adventuring

@MikeQ Well you just don't allow this in a campaign unless that's something you're explicitly cool with having happen

@Himitsu_no_Yami Conceptually I dislike making it "more efficient". Perhaps what should happen is that the highest-level spell you can cast goes up.
@MikeQ If you're a hero, you pay the price yourself. Sacrificing NPCs is what bad guys do. So depending on the tone you're aiming for, maybe that shouldn't be allowed.

8:53 PM
I think more efficient works up to a point, a brand new blood mage isn't going to know how to extract the full amount of power from any given amount of blood

It would make more sense to tie it to some other class resource, rather than raw quantity of blood. That's how other classes work. And the system doesn't quantify blood volume as a resource anyway.
e.g. You make fireball stronger by expending a higher spell slot, rather than expending larger amounts of bat guano
