Q: Does anyone know the name of the three small islands west of The Cloakwood (and Baldur's Gate)?

Buggy Buggman These islands just west of the Cloakwood and Baldur's Gate appear in every map I can find depicting the Sea of Swords, but are never tagged. Before you google, the islands just southwest of The Cloakwood (and directly west of Candlekeep) are the ones known as The Cimarine Isles. The islands in...

@KorvinStarmast Yeah, I compared it with my other Templar, and I had a mix of gems - +Vit, +Str, +Resist all, etc. The advice given about switching up the gear also helped immensely, I've jumped from "struggling in torment 9" to "above par in torment 10", which imo is a huge improvement
@AncientSwordRage Ty :D and it is also super fun haha

Q: how many ball bearings do you use up?

user62968It doesn't quite specify in the Adventuring Gear section how many ball bearings you use up, though it does say one bag is 1000 ball bearings. Does it use up all 1000 when you use an action to spread them around?

@HotRPGQuestions Have you ever picked up hundreds of ball bearings?
House rule: "as an action you can spill these metal balls from their pouch to cover a level, square area that is 10 feet on a side. As a thousand actions you can pick them back up."
4

@nitsua60 House rule: "Do not spill a pouch of ball bearings in my house."

Ben
2:33 AM
@nitsua60 Bag of Scolding: Finally. We both know you're not going to bother picking them up.

Wait a minute... how many does the Quiver of Ehlonna hold? I just realized it'd make for a great game of pick up sticks!
":notes: Turn it upside-down for hours of fun! Just put each back when you're done! :notes:"

Humble Book Bundle: Dungeons & Dragons - Read the Realms by Wizards of the Coast is available for the next 3 weeks. It includes a ton of novels set in the Forgotten Realms (just $15 to get them all): R.A. Salvatore's The Legend of Drizzt novels #1-13 and Collected Stories anthology, all 6 in the War of the Spider Queen series (various authors), and all 3 in Lisa Smedman's The Lady Penitent series.

Should "off-planeter" have two Ts?

7:20 AM
(I'm modifying Goblin Court to fit better with Space Goblins)

7:41 AM
@BESW having recently worked grade-school kids through the rules on those sorts of things... I think "yes," but I think it actually reads more-naturally with one 't'.
The doubled 't' feels like it wants to pull stress onto the middle syllable?
plaNETTer?

I'm more interested in "reads good" than "is technically correct," so that sounds good.
And "is technically wrong but works better this way" is very goblin.

Then again, it's 3:45am where I am, so my judgment should be clearly suspect =\

I feel like it's more goblin to use two t's

Then I might go with "you might be a off-planetter an off-planeter a off an alien."
That feels kinda goblin to me, too =)

Hee.
I'm kinda carefully implying an interplanetary society without implying aliens, because aliens would muddy the human/goblin dynamic.
Somebody suggested off-worlder, but I dunno that feels weird.

7:59 AM
Off-worlder seems at least as solid as off-planeteer.

@Rubiksmoose Nov. 2018 was the most recent errata to the DMG.

Ben
Eebning all

@nitsua60 That's not true. Your judgment is always suspect! ;)
@Ben but it's 5:30 am
(don't ask why I'm still awake)
((it's because I have to make a character for a Murder on the Eberron Express one-shot tonight (Thursday night) and I've been procrastinating since the start of the week and haven't done anything but pick what my character's role is in the murder mystery - i.e. how they knew the victim))
For reference - the Former Business Partner:
> You worked together, sure, and no it didn’t end well, what of it? Just what are they trying to imply? You helped Bakker when one else trusted him, and he stiffed you. Now you’re stuck on a train for days with him and his loudmouth habits...
(I'm not the murderer... at least in this playthrough)

Ben
@V2Blast still?
:p

as in, I haven't slept yet :P
I woke up at like 3 pm
I've never played in an Eberron game
I only have a loose-ish understanding of the setting

Ben
9:55 AM
@V2Blast I thought my sleep pattern was bad lol

this has been my sleep schedule for the past year or three
:P
it's... not great

Ben
So long as it works
@V2Blast I like these sort of "vague" (intentional or otherwise) backstories

that's what's given in the table of character roles itself (there's 8 in total)

Ben
Makes for fun character-buiding and inter-character relationships

it gives a little more info once you pick one (e.g. what my character knows about Egan Bakker and the other roles), prompts me to decide a few things, and leaves the rest up to me
ye

Ben
9:59 AM
Ah noice

> The player must decide:
- How exactly did the partnership end?
- How did you get involved in arms dealing during the war?

Ben
Discount/second-hand prosthetics
To both questions 😂

lol
since it's level 6, and I'm doing this sort of last-minute, I'm thinking some kind of martial character so I don't have to deal with spells. Inquisitive rogue seems thematically fitting for murder mystery, though I dunno how to work that together with the former business partner role
also, for reference:
> Egan Bakker is a foundling from House Cannith, one of Khorvaire’s powerful Dragonmarked Houses, trying to make his way into their good graces. Bakker is an artificer on his way from Sharn to Fairhaven with his family and a suspicious collection of others. On the final day of travel, Bakker is shot and killed with newly invented firearm. The characters must solve the murder before they get to Fairhaven or the killer might escape, and they might be blamed by the Fairhaven guard.

Ben
11:08 AM
@V2Blast you could be the "entrepreneur" of the partnership?

true true. maybe helping Egan not get ripped off in deals and such
the Gambler background from the Acq. Inc. book seems oddly fitting for some reason :P
the Mark of Detection (half-elf only) also seems pretty cool. their Deductive Intuition trait:
> When you make an Intelligence (Investigation) or Wisdom (Insight) check, you can roll a d4 and add the number rolled to the ability check.
that plus Inquisitive's Ear of Deceit:
> Whenever you make a Wisdom (Insight) check to determine whether a creature is lying, treat a roll of 7 or lower on the d20 as an 8.
plus putting my Expertise (well, twp of them - I get Expertise in two skills at level 1, and 2 more at level 6) in Insight and Investigation...
good stuff. :P

11:32 AM
@nitsua60 good thing it wasn't a hungry hippo ...

1 hour later…
12:38 PM
@BESW It's a solved problem:
Captain Planet and the Planeteers is an American animated environmentalist Superhero television series created by Ted Turner, Barbara Pyle and Robert Larkin III, and developed by Pyle, Nicholas Boxer, Thom Beers, Andy Heyward, Robby London, Bob Forward and Cassandra Schafausen. The series was produced by Turner Program Services and DIC Enterprises and broadcast on TBS from September 15, 1990, to December 5, 1992. A sequel series, The New Adventures of Captain Planet, was produced by Hanna-Barbera Cartoons, Inc., distributed by Turner Program Services and broadcast from September 11, 1993, to May...

@KorvinStarmast Nice! I'm debating about picking out rare items or homebrewing myself.
@nitsua60 I'm actually a little surprised no one answered like that. I mean, these things are going to everywhere and impossible to pick up or find in any reasonable amount of time.

I just accidentally considered a pie chart, but a sphere.

That sounds... not useful

@nitsua60 "Get a magnet"

@NautArch To be fair, you could probably cut it down to 500 actions by using both your "free" interaction and your "use an object".

12:47 PM
@nitsua60 nah, the free action is looking. the action is picking it up

@nitsua60 A dust pan and brush gets most of them if you have the Unseen Servant do it.

Or maybe the free action is the first, failed attempt to grab each ball and the use an object is the second, successful attempt.

ha!

If all you want to do is clean them up, get a rust monster out of his kennel, and he'll take care of them in no time. "Bearings and Bits" is a favorit Rust Monster meal

@nitsua60 I've only ever seen one episode of this series: the one where the bad guys try to sell an atom bomb to Hitler
It has a memorable line by old Adolf himself: "Mitt or mittout your bomb I will rule the world!"

12:54 PM
@KorvinStarmast #lifehacks #screwyoumonsters

@KorvinStarmast You want to be careful not to overfeed it though. The vets fees for rust monsters are astronomical

@Someone_Evil We are left to ponder on what rust monster fewments look like in the back yard, or on the third level of the dungeon ... I have no canonical sources, but I'm guessing that it eats the iron and passes on all of the other elements like vanadium, chromium, carbon, that are in the steel ...

1000 actions is only an hour and a half.

That's close enough to "during a short rest" for my GM tastes

@goodguy5 That's assuming you find all...which you won't. That DC is crazy high.

@KorvinStarmast That seems like a reasonable guess. I'm trying to make the chemistry work, and I can only assume they oxidize iron to +2 for then to consume it and metabolise it to the +3 state (this is what some bacteria do, minus the first bit). Not sure what it would leave the other metals as, though it's probably just the oxides

1:05 PM
And then you need adjudicate the loss and the next square footage.

@NautArch Which sounds like a good argument for just letting all (or near enough all) be found. Has anyone had this item used in their games?

@Someone_Evil We've used caltrops and generally treated it like a single use item. Never even thought about asking "can we go pick them up?"

I also like the "you get half"

@BESW "Spacer" worked for Asimov.

1 hour later…
2:34 PM
@Someone_Evil twice seen it used in not quite 6 years. Both time in urban settings.

GcL
@NautArch I've never had them used in a situation where anyone wanted to stick around to pick them up after. Mostly just used to ruin the day of any pursuer.

@KorvinStarmast Use tasha's hideous laughter on an adherer =)

@nitsua60 heh, that's a reach back ... 8^D

2:53 PM
the thought of #screwyoumonsters automatically brings them to mind =)

@nitsua60 My DM in the second campaign dragged back into circulation that monster that looks like a little rabbit on a stump and cries like a small child ... I forget what it's called, but I think it was originally in the Fiend Folio

3:08 PM
If only I weren't quarantined away from all of my pre-5e books =(
@KorvinStarmast I feel like I remember that, though. Something with a "J"?

@KorvinStarmast yochlol?
ah, nm. it doesn't scream.
gibbering mouther?

@NautArch nope. I'll see if I can find it ... might have been in monster manual II ... Not a gibbering mouther.
@NautArch what it does is that the little bably looking bit cries for help, or the little rabbit looking thing, and then the tentacles strike out at whomever shows up. A weird variation on various monsters that use deception to lure their prey to them ...

3:26 PM
@KorvinStarmast that's just mean. Like having a fischer cat in your backyard.

3:48 PM
@KorvinStarmast <headdesk>
I have... [cough cough] access to those books anyway. Gimme a minute....
Not seeing it in FF, can take a look at MM and MMII later.

GcL
@KorvinStarmast Is there an enchanter named Tim to warn you of it's danger?
@KorvinStarmast I think I recall what you're talking about. Let me consult the neck beard network and see what they come up with.

@GcL I just poked Angry's server--they can be good for things like that.

GcL
Did they play a lot of AD&D in the 80's?
@KorvinStarmast Are you thinking it was in that book with the githyanki on the cover?

Angry certainly did. And given the good performance contestants gave in the "Lore" category on Angry Jeopardy! the other night, a bunch of others must have.
@GcL That's FF--I just checked that one and came up empty.

4:05 PM
@KorvinStarmast Sounds like a Wolf-in-Sheep’s-Clothing

GcL
Neck beards come through. Monster manual II ... the one with the gitant on the cover.
@MikeQ That's the one.
The bunny wasn't part of the monster. It was a dead bunny puppet
NM... there's some debate about that and a book must be located.
Luckily... everyone is at home with easy access to their basement or whatever dungeon storage these things are kept in.

@MikeQ Yes
MM II, sorry.

@GcL Angry beards came through, too, but I mistakenly thought they were just poking fun at my avatar =\

@GcL Actually, I am at work and I don't have that access at the mo ... (And I think I have a pic of it on another PC)
@GcL I did, and that's partly why it's bugging me that I can't seem to recall its name.

GcL
Does drivethru rpg have a digital copy of the book? that might be worth getting. Add that to the tv slide shows.

4:14 PM
(And I don't have a neck beard; I have a trimmed "mustache and chinbeard" thing)

GcL
@KorvinStarmast It's definitely a wolf in sheep's clothing monster. Basically a tree stump with tentacles and a mouth. Debate rages on about which editions people are remembering about the bunny puppet thing. I'm entertained.

Yes, Mike got it, and now that you both mention that, it scores.
The bunny puppet might be a 3d edition add on? Not sure, I didn't 3.x much.
@NautArch It nearly killed our gnome who went out to investigate.

GcL
Holy crap. Drive thru does have a lot of the AD&D books. NM. It's not a dead bunny in the original. Apparently, it's part of the monster... which itself is a vegetable.

I thought "neckbeard" was an insult regarding hygiene

@GcL yes.
@MikeQ It is, but I think it goes to grooming in general - I wasn't aware of the term until long after its origin ...

GcL
4:18 PM
I don't recall vegetable being a kind of monster in D&D. Then again, I don't think we cared.

@GcL there were a lot of natural hazards that didn't need a tag or "type" that were bloody dangerous ..

GcL
And that's what henchmen and 10' poles were for.

I think I remember one from dragon mag that was a revision of the Venus Fly trap, giant variety. Nasty in a wilderness adventure.
@GcL Or bag of tricks.
(Toss in the possum: whoops, got a horse, can't throw it)

GcL
That's the one with the bathroom pills that expand into a creature, right?

@KorvinStarmast you sent a gnome into my backyard?
Yeah, let's keep neckbeard stuff to a minimum. Definitely Not Nice.

GcL
4:22 PM
I think we had a ranger that had an item like that. Wasn't used very much as they were busy Aragorning up the place most of the time. Henchmen were cheap, easy to come by, expendable, and most importantly could be used to carry loot if they lived.
I recall carrying loot being one of the biggest challenges in that entire game.
What the heck do you do with 50k copper pieces? Who hoards this crap? Why do the tables allow for it!?

@NautArch no, I figure your garden gnomes might try and adopt it. :-) What I was referring to was the Wolf in sheeps clothing encounter in a jungle; our party gnome (my brother's wizard/illusionist) went to investigate the sound - you'd think an illusionist would recoginze a illusion / camoflage? Nope, that thing was doing a number on him when the EK and my Monk showed up tof whack at it and free the gnome.
@GcL To create choices and decisions. And as raw material for copper tubing. ;-)

GcL
@KorvinStarmast Yeah, and us, as we had a number of henchmen and carts just to deal with that kind of crap and tow it back to the fighter's keep. Oh yeah... fighters got keeps if they lived to high enough level. I totally forgot about that.

4:43 PM
@NautArch my college suitemates and I decided one year ('cause college) to grow a beard. A beard. Collectively.

@nitsua60 Ha!

One got to have the mustache, one the Asimov-chops, one the chinstrap that terminated curiously low ('cause Asimov), and one the neckbeard.
It was definitely an insult then to have to be the neckbeard.
(We rotated ~monthly, IIRC.)

@nitsua60 Now that's just funny, I don't care who you are.
I am of the beard school that keeps the neck clean shaven since the beard is (to my eye) best used as a face ornament/garnish ... thre are so many styles to consider ... my son goes back and forth between letting the lower part grow back or cleaning up the neck ... can't seem to go final on either.
I could never go for the full ZZ Top look
Even though I am a big fan of Billy Gibbons

Had a thought for my upcoming vampire fight. He may step out of the room, and await them by the door. If they light it up, then he charms, moves back in and closes/bars door.

GcL
Does the vampire know they're in the dungeon?

4:55 PM
yup
and knows they are nearby

@KorvinStarmast I'm of the beard school that hates shaving, but finds whiskers on my neck so maddeningly-itchy as to provoke me to shave there. Whatever results above the jawbone, that's what it is.

GcL
How large is the corridor? Also, the element of surprise in the darkness of the players not knowing what kind of danger they're facing is a pretty big thing to give up
Does the vampire know they have Wave?

@GcL NOno, i mean if the party lights up the hallway. He's not going to. If they don't, he's not going to charm and will prep other things (swarm of bats, probably)

GcL
If it doesn't know they have Wave, it might think they can be surprised. Or if it doesn't know the capabilities of Wave

10' high, 10' wide. Considering that the vampire once wielded Whelm (i'm pretty sure on that), he's aware and whelm is aware and in communication.

5:01 PM
@nitsua60 I am so used to shaving (it's almost reflexive) after a career in the navy that I had to make a concerted effort to try and make the beard work. Wife didn't like the full face beard, but she's OK with the goat (or rather a modified goat). So that's what resulted. I guess I make a terrible dwarf. They grow theirs so long it can be braided.

anyone able to quickly put a hand on our "capital-A-Attack vs. lowercase-a-attack" question? I should favorite it--I can never find it.

Q: What does upper-case-A-Attack action vs. lower-case-a-attack mean?

Medix2What exactly is the difference between Attack action and attack? It seems each time a question regarding this pops up, there's always somebody arguing they are not different. I feel there should be a concise and indisputable answer that shows how they are, in fact, different.

@NautArch that was quick

@KorvinStarmast duckduckgo search :)

@nitsua60 You should be able to find it in your list of answered questions. :)

Were electrum pieces a thing in 4th edition?

6:22 PM
> D&D 4th Ed.
100 cp = 10 sp = 1 gp = 1⁄100 pp = 1⁄10,000 ad
Electrum is not mentioned in the core rules, and only a Sembian electrum coin (worth 5 gp?) is mentioned in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide.

GcL
Excellent. So 4th edition is the one that got it right.

@nitsua60 I got that message about the same time you did, and then I got a phone call from a customer. Then I got back, and it worked. What Did You Do to Fix That? 8^o

Q: Planar Ally and Planar Binding interaction

NyarlathotepLet's say I'm a cleric of Mystra, and I need her help, so I cast Planar Ally: You beseech an otherworldly entity for aid. The being must be known to you: a god, a primordial, a demon prince, or some other being of cosmic power. That entity sends a celestial, an elemental, or a fiend loyal to ...

10:05 PM
@HotRPGQuestions Depending on what exactly you do with it, as NautArch said, Mystra will be pretty miffed. (To put it nicely)

10:23 PM
@nitsua60 only a thousand actions? we all know that by the time you pick up that thousandth one you'll have spilled more and have to pick those up too

@Himitsu_no_Yami I was thinking about making it a concentration check to pick each one up, DC ratcheting up with each successful or failed attempt.
Didn't seem hard enough.

Maybe if you fail the concentration check X times you spill them all out and have to start again?

Q: Does the Sacred Weapon from the Channel Divinity of Devotion Paladin dispel Darkness?

NautArchThis is a tricky one, and I haven't found a similar Q&A, but may have missed it. Devotion paladins have a Channel Divinity option of Sacred Weapon that emits light 20/20 of bright/dim. Does this dispel darkness?
