@Xirema That's a good point thanks
I initially had the idea of putting in all valid SRD monsters, but saw how many there were and decided that was too much work
Trying to get a way to navigate the options

Something else worth mentioning: it might be worth adding an "advanced options" box somewhere. When I started adding specific D&D-relevant functions to my probability calculator, one of the things I did was create a modular system to add extra options to attacks, like supporting the Brutal Critical feature that Barbarians have, or the expanded Crit Range that Champion Fighters have.
Little tiny things that shouldn't be shown on the default interface (because it would clutter the interface) but would be nice to have available for power users.

@KorvinStarmast Got it. One of my favorites, and often one I'll throw people's way if they're all "I would never like Stephen King...."

@nitsua60 Nice. As I am about to have a bit of time on my hands, I think I'll check half priced books tomorrow. Thanks for the recommendation. :)

Q: Can the Spell Alter Self allow a Kenku to Speak Normally?

RallozarXThe Alter Self spell says: Change Appearance. You transform your appearance. You decide what you look like, including your height, weight, facial features, sound of your voice, hair length, coloration, and distinguishing characteristics, if any. (emphasis mine) Would changing the sound of ...

@vicky_molokh As a dissenting voice, I don't like those thought-provoking questions of yours because they get posted as I start the workday and wind up locked by the time I get home. (Is joke.)

Q: Would a character take damage when surrounded by, but not in, flames?

Andrew z hooperThe setting is gladiator pit, warlock vs two weapon fighter. The warlock has cast plant growth and covered the ground in thick vegetation. Fighter becomes frustrated by his inability to move quickly and throws alchemist’s fire on the ground. Fire soon spreads cutting arena in half. Fighter then b...

Q: Broken Chat Links

vicky_molokhThis isn't the first time I see this happening. An answer has a line of comments that is getting long, gets moved to chat to avoid clutter. Sometimes later the chat gets locked and new comments appear related to the old ones, requiring the chat to understand the context. Sometimes they don't. E...

@vicky_molokh You've got a satisfying answer and I don't want to get into a conversation about it, but I think it's important to point out a category error. All of your "HP is already abstract" evidence is textual, but you're comparing it to a phrase that's not engaging with text: "stress is not HP" is spoken to people, not to text.
You yourself were familiar enough with non-abstracted HP as common knowledge that you didn't notice the text said otherwise until you specifically checked. That common knowledge is what the phrase is engaging with, and "but the text says otherwise" is a discussion for D&D users to have amongst themselves. Experts in other systems will engage with the D&D system as it's used by the people they're talking to.
That's probably why the question got a lot of confusion from users.

@BESW I added a bit of context about my own knowledge of D&D HP being rather negligible, and me mostly spending my RPG 'career' with systems whose HPs are rather concrete. Otherwise, thank you for a useful pointing out of a difference of perspective that I should consider when next encountering such a variant of the phrase.

Going to test drive Spirit Island's expansion today. With two first-timers. Let's hope this goes well!

D&D's issue is that hit points are both abstract and also not abstract depending on which particular mechanics you're engaging with
it's all very well that hp represent pluck and fighting spirit until your rule is that a poison that must be delivered by injury takes effect on a hit which deals damage
and most damage types are obviously representative of physical injury, etc.

@Sirv It defaults to having advantage on the rolls, which seems illogical to me. Blind, I would expect to have to set advantage and that it defaults to a normal roll. (Though I realise wolves are going to have advantage most of the time.)

Hmm yeah good point
I had made the thing specificially for wolves (because they are awful to do normally, where as normal attacks you can just roll 8 dice), and it kind of grew as I went
And I never revisited the initial assumption there

Q: How to run NPCs with complicated mechanics?

linksassinWhen I need a run of the mill NPC I use the NPC classes which have simplified mechanics. These classes are great and make it really easy to quickly run their mechanics during combat without needing to learn/remember complex features. However I often find them a bit lacking in flavour or ability f...

@Sirv I would also suggest that advantage/flat/disadvantage should be radio buttons rather than a dropdown, that would be easier to use

Looking for completely off-topic advice re: A question I asked in SO.
I found my own answer. I'd like to post it. Should I post it as an "Answer", or update my Question?

@BESW thanks
(I'm not sure the people who've answered/commented will like my answer ... but it worked for me!)

The purpose of the Stack Exchange is to create a collection of easily-searchable practical solutions to problems people actually face, for people in the future to find.
The Stack doesn't care who creates the content so long as it fits into that box.

I am quite surprised at the lack of information (both on SE/SO and wider) about the problem I had.

@BlackSpike there is nothing wrong with a self-answer on Stacks as long as the answer's good

@Shalvenay good? I have no idea. Solved my problem, and is adaptable to others who have a similar problem? I think so.
Answer posted. Fingers crossed taht I haven't burnt all my rep
I struggled for ages with this ... then, I managed to explain it to a friend, who knocked up a dozen lines of python to produce the sql i needed to convert my tables!
I think a lot of my problems stem from not being able to explain myself well ... I often get 20-comments into my facebook "Code" page, asking for help, and someone goes "Oh, that's what you need? you should have said!" ... I thought I did?
