Q: How should Thaumaturgy's "three times as loud as normal" be interpreted?

Etienne OttThis may be a bit of a silly question, but it came up during playing and left me wondering. The spell description states that your voice booms "three times as loud as normal", but it leaves open how the volume of a voice is measured. Two common ways to measure the volume of sound is to measure t...

@V2Blast Wasn't an option when I got my DNDBeyond account. Don't use it often enough to have bothered changing it.

@KorvinStarmast clever clever :) Although it feels like if there isn't an exact match, we're just tossing ideas out that only their DM can confirm.

hey there @linksassin, how're things going?

@Shalvenay Busy. Life's been a little hectic for a while. Hence the lack of presence here.

@linksassin yeah, I kinda noticed. things have been OK here more or less

12:26 AM
@Shalvenay Aw, it's nice to be missed I guess :)

Ben
For anyone interested, I have a friend doing commissions facebook.com/100001846340706/posts/2997005657037616/?sfnsn=mo
She is a very talented artist, and focusses primarily on character depictions, but has a wide range of skill!

@Ben -- some of that half makes me wish that PayPal wasn't such a can of worms

Ben
She has a Kofi page too
That's a way to pay, probably just let her know, cos Kofi does keep a percentage

...huh. then again, I don't use Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram....

Ben
Haha

12:41 AM
@Shalvenay I'm sure Ben can get them to do snail mail for you :)

Ben
Well, if you are interested, let me know! I do know her personally, and these days there are so many ways to get in contact haha
She's done a lot of my characters in the past too.

@Ben I actually kind of am

Ben
I'll message you on discord then :)

@Shalvenay hi shal
@NautArch the idea behind that answer is that i could support it with game books as written. As a Dm, that's how I'd have done it.

12:59 AM
@KorvinStarmast Not denying that any of those could be it, but we're all just stabbing in the dark. THey're not asking"how do you build this" but "was what we fought a standard monster?" Still a clever way of building something like it :)

@KorvinStarmast how're things going?

Ben
I know it's not relevant to here, but this cracked me up for some reason, and I know some of you will get it haha

@NautArch I agree, and we never got the follow up from "and this is what he did." I figured an example of "how to do a reskin" fit well enough.

@Shalvenay My son is withdrawing from my Monday night games, work schedule and travel changes. I am sad.

1:06 AM
@KorvinStarmast drat :/

he's sorta sad also, he was enjoying his barbarian dwarf.
Yeah, bummer.

I'm personally wondering what's going to happen with Saturday nights, myself...

Good news is that grandbaby probably gets born next week. Mrs S is most excited.

@KorvinStarmast I'm debating about deleting my negative AC answer. Pretty sure I'm going to.

This Saturday, if we don't leave for that, I should be OK.
@NautArch lemme take a peak

1:07 AM
@KorvinStarmast Grandpa Starmast! Your first?

Ben
@KorvinStarmast oh yay!

@NautArch Yes

happyhappy joyjoy!

Yes there is some joy to be had in Mudville. :)

@KorvinStarmast Awesome! Mom and baby are doing well?

1:08 AM
@nitsua60 Not born yet, so I'll not tempt fate. Due next week ... we think

Feeling okay, then? Not too-too full-term?

@nitsua60 Daughter is in good spirits and feeling well. yes

Ben
When I told my folks, the situation did not start well haha. I told them that my partner and I had something we wanted to talk to them about, but my dad has anxiety where he likes to know what's going on. He was not happy when we sat down, and it kinda spoiled the surprise for him a bit haha

Excellent. Then I wish her a labor that is not one second longer than feels like it justifies the hospital bills =)

@nitsua60 Yep, thanks for the good wishes. We are hoping for a healthy baby and mom. Mrs S is over the top excited.

1:10 AM
My experience with that was:
ME: um, we've got something we'd like to talk to you about...
(now) STEPMOM: Oh, my God! $daughter, you're **pregnant!?**
(now) SPOUSE: no, we want to get married!

Snort

Ben
Hahaha

@nitsua60 My daughter been married six years, so this is all in the box and my wife said "finally!" when we heard the announcement this spring

Ben
That's great! Haha
I told my three sisters, one after the other.

My parents married 66 years ago today, so just missed by a few days a birth on that date.
Talked to dad to day (he is 91) and he's also looking forward to the next generation.

Ben
1:14 AM
Middle sister was feeling very down after some personal news, so I decided it would cheer her up. It flipped that smile upside down
My eldest sister was bouncing off the walls
And my youngest, she just sat there, in silence, to the point where it was getting awkward, but them we realised her blank expression was slowly morphing into a huge grin

1:35 AM
@NautArch Man, that question nearly fits our cheese category, in terms of "use RAW, even if the results are absurd."

@KorvinStarmast yeah, i think it deserves a cheese spot. It's not the cheese we normally put in, but it's definitely cheese.

@Ben coolness; she digested it first

Ben
@NautArch It's either kraft singles, or that really expensively fancy blue cheese that everyone wants, but hates.

@Ben maybe it's head cheese
but i'm kind of digging kraft singles

they make a fine grilled cheese sandwich ...

Ben

They really do

seriously
although we usually buy either deitz and watson or boars head american

Ben
For some reason I remember they brought out a block, made of the same stuff.
Not sure if that's true or not though

@NautArch The cheese post for lowest possible armor class is up in meta
I get Dubliner (by Kerrygold) at Sam's by the block. We like strong cheese.

@KorvinStarmast my god, it's beautiful
a world without cheese

To horrible to contemplate, say I
As to that last line, I won five bucks in a bar trivia contest tonight knowing the name of a B Spears song from about 20 years ago ... the weird stuff that collects in my brain ...
And I don't even like her songs. (My daughter did, though)

1:53 AM

Uh, and I got saturated by Spice Girls music. Arrrggghhh! the 90's had some bad things, man ...

Ben
New post apocalypse arc: the cheese is all gone

@Ben hard pass. a world I don't want to consider.

Ben
@KorvinStarmast The 90s was very hit and miss haha
@NautArch Either that, or coffee

Q: Can my imp familiar still talk when shapshifted (to a raven, if that matters)?

Zeiss IkonMy Great Old One warlock just made third level, and I chose Pact of the Chain. Rock StoneI've started a D&D 5e campaign in Oerik (Greyhawk) with a druid in the party. I want to allow her to use the druid groves on the Anna B Meyer maps, but I can't find any info on their benefits, if any. Uh-oh. I see a can of worms there, since 'The 4.0 license suite uniformly and explicitly waives moral rights', which . . . I'm pretty sure isn't supposed to be doable.

10:15 AM
@Ben nahhh... why doing actually enjoyable things when you can give actual migraine to users with a "funny" flashback to the 90' that will be a pain trigger to many of them....
and then be surprised if someone (cough cough) asks you if the April Fool joke was really welcoming...

Q: How many attacks exactly do I get combining Dual Wielder feat with Two-Weapon Fighting style?

Ilona It says at Two-Weapon Fighting attack option (PHB, 165): When you take the Attack action and attack with a light melee weapon that you're holding in one hand, you can use a bonus action to attack with a different light melee weapon that you're holding in the other hand. And then there is Du...

@vicky_molokh yeah, sounds like that's an issue to take up with the Creative Commons folks

@vicky_molokh much posting, so passive aggressive users and staff, very expected

@vicky_molokh may be a boo-boo, or may be an issue with using an unported or otherwise not harmonized-to-all-national-laws version of the license

12:04 PM
@Shalvenay I don't think it's an issue of non-porting, but rather a matter of the fact that Creative Commons always seemed to be not very interested in protecting moral rights. IIRC previous editions just tried to ignore them.

NathanSI learned from a meta post by HeyICanChan once that you can type [tour] in a comment and SE will convert that into a link to the tour page. Is there a similar way to link to the help center? It's common practice these days to link both in "greetings" comments to new users, but I have to copy t...

In 5e, are things basically separated into either creatures or objects? Are there other options?
and howdy y'all!

> For the purpose of these rules, an object is a discrete.
inanimate item like a window, door, sword, book,
table, chair, or stone, not a building or a vehicle that is
composed of many other objects. (DMG 246)

I suspect 5e doesn't really quite rigorously define itself in that way
at least not in a way that makes sense and people actually use

yeah, i'm debating about responding to a comment asking why I think a container is an object

maybe I'm just mad about spell targeting

1:34 PM
@NautArch I'd argue for the inclusion of a "neither" category, that includes at least the more-or-less permanent fixed stuff like the ground one stands on.

@kviiri Yeah, i was thinking creature/object/neither as well.
but not sure that's a useful response. I think i'll avoid defining container and focus on a creature is not a container.

I could also plausibly see a "both" category

oh
it's the create water question isn't it

@Carcer it's the create water question :)

I don't think those rules are rigorous enough to rule out an interpretation of a creature as a container for the purpose of something to put water in
I'd let you do it to create water in someone's cupped hands, for instance, mouth follows a bit logically from there

1:37 PM
@Carcer Then i'll avoid a comment argument and just leave it unanswered.

I can see a DM deciding that the definition of container must mean an object and not a creature, and I doubt the spell was authored with the potential of using creatures as containers in mind, but there you go

@Carcer If you're targeting a creature's mouth, you're targeting a creature (there are no rules for targeting specific body parts.) But the spell doesn't target creatures.
that's kinda my answer in a nutshell.
You could say a mouth is a type of container, but you can't target the mouth.

Okay, but what about a mimic in the shape of a barrel?

@Someone_Evil Use a rock of detection.

@Someone_Evil I think that's an interesting way to find out that it's a mimic. I think we have another question similar to this...
this isn't it, but kinda discusses it.

Q: What happens when a caster targets an object that looks like a creature with a spell that targets only creatures?

enkryptorThere are many spells which explicitly target creatures: Choose one creature within range The target creature is normally supposed to make a saving throw in this case. What happens when the caster chooses a creature, that is actually an object? For instance, a scarecrow, a mannequin, an il...

^

1:46 PM
I love the create water question because I'm utterly baffled that it even occurs to anyone, but everyone just reacts perfectly normally at it.
I mean it's called create water, not create water in an object... The point is that it creates water, not that its target is or isn't a creature, object, plant, dragon's breath weapon...

@PierreCathé Wait, so you can't create it in a cup or bottle?

Woops looks like I overlapped into my other favourite question
@vicky_molokh Yeah you can, that's my point

We have a question on armouring a whale, someone trying to drown someone/something doesn't surprise me

@Someone_Evil I read that as 'amouring'...

@Someone_Evil Yeah but that's not serious, it's goofy fun, but the create water one seems serious to me
Or I just lack the insight to see it as the troll it is... ?

@KorvinStarmast Sorry if this reads selfish, but . . . I did that before? Which question(s)?

@vicky_molokh You ask a lot of good questions that (even if some don't fit our stack all that well) are to me thought provoking. I'll go and pick out a few faves and answer back.

@vicky_molokh Prose styles are what they are, but it's the things that you get me thinking about that I tend to find appealing in your questions. And you can always edit it again to make it tighter or pithier, if you are so moved.

@vicky_molokh - I couldn't find an origin, but I put a precis on your stress/hp question.

@Yuuki So...if you make an award out of the hindquarters of a feline, does that make a catastrophe?
2

@JohnP No, but there's a button right next to the ENTER key on the feline keyboard that's called the catapostrophe.
TIL the call-response to the saxophone solo in "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" is an actual human person singing and that amazes me.

@Yuuki Jay Siegel. Awesome falsetto singer.

Actually apparently they brought in an opera singer for this particular part.

3:15 PM
> "I was in high school," Siegel recalls. "I must have been about 16 years old. I was a big fan of folk music. I was listening to the radio one day, and I heard this great piece of music by the Weavers at Carnegie Hall with Pete Seger. They were singing this song called 'Wimoweh.' I loved it. The whole lead vocal was done in falsetto. I just loved the melody, the whole idea of it. And I realized that I was able to sing that falsetto."
i hadn't heard of the opera singer thing.

> WELLS: (Laughter) She had four workable octaves without going to falsetto.
:|

huh. Interesting.
Wonder what they did for concerts?

Huh. Shuriken of spell storing - Cast Cure <whatever> and you have a ranged cure spell for the cost of 1d2 damage.

3:37 PM
@JohnP Yes, John. yes it does. and they could hear the groan as far away as Point Barrow
@Yuuki I'd rather hear them than see them, but that was a nice performance.

@KorvinStarmast Shameful confession: I ripped that off from a Piers Anthony novel.

@JohnP And the cost of getting something enchanted with spell storing.

@Yuuki Well, yeah, there is always an initial outlay of sunk capital.

@JohnP Of Firefly fame?

@JohnP Is Piers Anthony the one with the weird descriptions of adolescents in his novels?

3:48 PM
@vicky_molokh Yes
@Yuuki Also yes? Not sure, I haven't read a Xanth novel in forever.

my mental filing says piers anthony is known to be weird in a bad way in some respects but I forget the details

@JohnP Ya know, it had a familiar ring to it, but it's been so long since I read any of PA's stuff that I could not place it.
@Carcer Not to mention that his books weren't that good, albeit they were popular back in the 80's.

@Yuuki by googling, I'd suggest it's a bit more serious than "weird descriptions of adolescents"

@Carcer Yeah, but I wasn't going into any further detail.

I do not intend to either, but I wasn't quite prepared

Q: What is the extent of the commands a Cambion can issue through Fiendish Charm?

StackLloydIn the last session we played, our DM sent Cambions at us. One of them managed to land a Fiendish Charm on our Barbarian and commanded him to attack our Bard. The part of text about issuing commands is quite short and reads as follows: The charmed target obeys the cambion's spoken commands. ...

Having gone through the wyrmhole after looking at PA's bibliography (zounds, that's a lot of books) I have now found my next quest: get a used copy of Stephen King's Eyes of the Dragon. I read Misery when it came out (my first King novel ever) and I discover that he wrote that after Eyes of the Draqon irritated some of his fans.
I read the first four of the Dark Tower books, but as I had not read 'The Stand' the introduction of Flagg and a few other shifts in mood caused me to lose interest. I suppose I could start again and read from book one to the end ... anyone done that?
Roland of Gilead really captured my fancy as I was reading that first novel.

Q: Do aarakocra have arms as well as wings?

BlackPuddingAteMyDessertEarlier versions of D&D had illustrations in which aarakocra did not have both arms and wings. Instead, their hands were akin to those of bats, with fingers part way along their wings. Yet in 5e, the illustrations for aarakocra picture them with arms that are independent of their wings. Nothing ...

@MikeQ It depends on the rate of caloric consumption and rate of caloric expenditure.
As long as the latter is not greater than the former, I think the answer is yes.

depends on your definition of perpetual motion machine
if the system includes an infinite supply of energy I'm not sure it can count

@Carcer That's a three year old who just learned the word "why? :)

@KorvinStarmast I think I remember that book.

4:30 PM
@KorvinStarmast But in the end you have a perpetual motion machine that is overweight and pre diabetic.

Follow-up: If you break an infinite breadstick in half, do you get two semi-infinite breadsticks?

@MikeQ You actually get an infinite number of 3 year olds crying because they wanted a big breadstick and for you to put it back together.

@KorvinStarmast Same, the break between the start and completion was enough for me to lose interest.

I have learned from painful experience, that no matter how many times you have cut up their food previously, you always ask a 3 year old if they want their food cut.

@JohnP Ask twice, cut once

4:35 PM
@NautArch yup. and even that isn't a sure thing.
That's why there is an entire meme generation around "my toddler is crying because..."

"Do you want X for lunch"..."yes"..."just confirming, you want X for lunch"..."yes"..."OKay, here's lunch!"..."What?! I didn't want X, I said Y"

Sometimes, I think about whether I should buy a voice recorder for these conversations but then I figure that parenting's not about being right.

@Yuuki My most recent conversation with Son #1 (S1) and Son #2 (S2)
S1: Why are you limping?
I hurt my butt at the tournament sparring.
S1 Aww...want me to kiss it and make it better?
...Uh...
S2 DAD's GOT OUCHIE BUTT!! <gleefully>
.... :|
My wife thought it was hysterical.

@Yuuki We have a friend who video'd their kid during a tantrum and then played it back it later asking if this is a way they want to act.
it worked for them

5:03 PM
@JohnP yeah, wives are so supportive at times like that. :p

1 hour later…
6:12 PM
@JohnP Should've asked her to kiss it for you and make it better.

6:42 PM
@Yuuki Yeah, I don't think asking my wife to kiss my butt is EVER a good idea.

but what if you got ouchie butt?

Don't matter. There is absolutely no circumstance where that would turn out well for me.

I am currently on my 32nd loop of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight".

@Yuuki which artist?

The Tokens.
My favorite part of the song is actually the background soprano, her voice is so ethereal.
Up until this morning, I actually thought it was an instrument not a person's voice.

7:32 PM
@KorvinStarmast Seems good

@BESW As you are pretty FATE savvy, maybe you can shed light on this question.
@Yuuki My daughter is a soprano, formally trained, but she has nothing like that gal's range.
@V2Blast I just re read the UA for sorc and warlock, again. Love the theme, hate that original sorcs do not get a back fill "one spell per spell level up to five based on your sorcerer origin" thing. The overlap between the UA warlock and GOO is a bit unfortunate, but thematically I like if for salt marsh campaign.

@Yuuki I appreciate the little detail that everything the person is typing on the cat appears as "mofu mofu" - i.e. "soft" or "fluffy"
@JohnP lol

@V2Blast The cat's tail is plugged into the computer and the mouse is a mouse.

@KorvinStarmast Yeah, I think that's a common opinion. Unfortunately WotC refuses to actually make any redesigns in errata
@Yuuki woah
