Ben
12:00 AM
@Shalvenay That's the direction the comments took

Oh I was about to say
Why not just edit the tag but I guess that's the problem XD

Ben
Apart from pathfinder, but that doesn't have a 5e
So I can understand if the point was to get the new user to understand being specific can be important; but the rollbacks seem... a bit much?

Ben
12:17 AM
So I have a animal companion in Pathfinder - an eagle. At this point in time, it's more of a lookout than anything; I don't use it in combat or anything, purely due to the chance of losing it. This, however, makes it a deficit, because it is trained for combat (it actually has more hp than our healer)

A non-combat scout companion isn't bad. PF tends to reward preparation - use the companion to gain intel on upcoming hazards/environments/traps.

Ben
Apparently the extent I can do is "squawk if you see anything"
Which doesn't really provide much.
And potentially gives us away

@Ben maybe try "squawk all the time unless you see something" ;)

12:34 AM
@Ben Depending on what sources are allowed, you may want to look into animal companion archetypes, if you want the birdie to specialize instead of using the default melee-combat-oriented progression

Ben
@MikeQ He does have some features, "trick, swoop," etc.
I can't remember them all off the top of my head
I vaguely recall some combat specific capability
@Rubiksmoose My dog does that.

@Ben You may be interested in what qualifies as guessing the system. If the OP clarifies in comments the it is D&D 5e then it is fine to add the tag. 5e alone is not enough.

Ben
@linksassin Yeah. Personally, I mean, it's obvious: Tieflings don't exist outside of D&D and Pathfinder, and Pathfinder doesn't have a 5th ed. BUT the system is there for a reason. Doesn't matter what you *feel; moderation works because it exists.

@Ben Exactly, the people against that policy have fairly logical arguments and are right 95% of the time. But when/if you are wrong it can cause a lot of issues. It's just better to get the OP to clarify.
I think I remember a comment from a mod or high rep user somewhere that said something like "I personally dislike this policy but since it came in we have had a lot less issues with mistagged questions." And I think that is the crux of the issue. It costs us nothing to not guess and we avoid the issues it can cause.

12:50 AM
Other systems have a 5e. Other systems have homebrew and third party publications. Tieflings are OGL and not WOTC trademarked. Thus, "5e tiefling" could appear in the context of another system.

@MikeQ yes
someone could be porting tieflings to SR for all we know :P

Ben
@MikeQ Yeah. That was another consideration. Much less likely, but still, it's that 1%

And even if it was trademarked (e.g. illithid), there are homebrews and 3rd party publications that ignore the trademark anyhow

Ben
@linksassin And you know, Modded Minecraft over on Arqade is the same. I it's a support question; it's off-topic. No exceptions

@Rubiksmoose do you keep meta open in its own tab? That was pretty quick!

1:01 AM
wb @nitsua60 -- will you be around Discord in a bit?

Not likely. I shouldn't have even taken the time to post that meta, I'm so backed up on grading. But I saw about a half-million rep disagreeing in front of the kids....

@nitsua60 I do actually, but in this case it was pure luck to have been tinkering around when I saw your post :)
It is a pretty boring tab most of the time lol
(I removed my comment btw)

@Rubiksmoose There's a nice second "inbox" the topbar gains when you get a diamond that lights up on a couple of different events, including a new post on meta. It makes it pretty easy to keep up with a slow-moving, but often important, flow. I wish they had an option for any meta-capable users to opt in to that bit of GUI.

@nitsua60 that would be nice! It's not like meta ever really has anything super hot that needs addressing, but I would still enjoy it. I was running a beta version of SOX a while back that implemented (or tried to) it, but it was always really wonky and they appear to have removed it.

Ask and ye shall receive!
2
A: Allow me to get notifications for new Meta posts, like mods do

ᔕᖺᘎᕊI've made a userscript to do this. Just like mods do, this userscript adds a diamond to the topbar (sorry if it's not the right colour - I'm not a mod on any site!) that goes red if there has been a new question posted on the current site's meta. Once you click it, it will show the 5 most recent...

1:08 AM
ooo! [...] Oh darn it points back to SOX. Maybe I'll dig back into the settings to see if I turned it off.

Ben
@MikeQ none of those archetypes are ringing any bells, unfortunately ;/

@Rubiksmoose Maybe the solution is to run for moderator? :P

@linksassin lol! I mean... you're not wrong.
That it is a solution, just not a very scalable one lol

Will there be an election since SSD retired? Or do we have enough anyway?

@nitsua60 oh wow, I'm silly. I do already have the diamond thingy. But it hasn't detected your post yet

1:13 AM
@linksassin That sounds like a great meta discussion =)
If mxy and greener and I felt one were necessary we'd ask SE and they'd almost certainly schedule an election. If we didn't and you-all didn't, they almost certainly won't. If we didn't but you-all expressed on meta that you did want one... we'd probably change our minds =)

@nitsua60 Sure I can post it if people are interested. But I was more wondering if there was like a set policy on it. I haven't been around for an election before. Is there some quota per user base or something?

My comment flags are being handled 2.36 minutes slower on average! We need an emergency mod election stat.

@Rubiksmoose You would be one of the only people I would believe actually has that data.

@Rubiksmoose is already a demi-mod, and it seems they're more responsive than some of the actual mods

@linksassin hahahaha. I'll take that as a compliment :)
@MikeQ that's not really fair because so much of what the mods do is behind the scenes. Since I'm just a power user that spends way too much time here, I get to do all the fun loud stuff that mods can't :)

1:18 AM
@linksassin No real policy, this meta I suggest (humbly) does a decent job of encapsulating how the most recent election came about.

Our mods do great work, even moreso when you consider that its a pretty thankless volunteer position.

Thanks! (But it's not exactly thankless: we get a t-shirt. And a hat.)

Lol

aw snap a hat! Well in that case sign me up!

Yeah we seem basically to have mod elections as we need them, no timetable but if literally everyone decides it's what we currently need it can happen pretty fast
I was in here last time and it sure seemed to happen quick from my perspective

1:24 AM
yeah, a month or two, most likely

Yeah but like that's pretty fast
For a change like that

sooth. wisely, wisely.

@nitsua60 That post is a goldmine of information. Do you feel there is an increased chance of burnout with one less mod?

I don't personally think it's an issue as of yet unless the mods themselves are feeling pressure of extra work
That being said I don't look at a lot of posts most of the time

@trogdor ^agreed

1:28 AM
@linksassin I don't know. I don't think so--our workload around here is pretty managable, and we're good about coordinating with each other when real life's getting heavy or light. (It seems to me, at least.)

Though like Greener said in the above link a lot of mod activity is mostly invisible anyway

I'm not honestly sure what overworked or insufficient moderation even looks like here. And for that I'm thankful!

To the extent I'm burning low it's not because SSD's retired, but because of personal things.

Yeah I mean I would be conserned if one more of you retired but just one out of four of you doesn't seem so bad if the three of you don't feel pressured by it currently

From what Mxy was saying in the community check-in, it also sounds like the community has picked up a bit of the moderation workload over past years so that possibly helps a s well

1:31 AM
@trogdor I think that's a good view to take. Considering that was the cause for the previous elections. Leave it for now and then elect 2 the next time someone retires.

For me it's not so much the workload, it's having a couple of people to bounce things off of when I'm not sure about how to approach something, that makes me value it being more than, say, just two total.

Three seemed like a fine enough number before honestly, not like I was gonna complain about four but three is probably fine
@nitsua60 yeah I can see that at least

I mean, we have easy contact with 100+ moderators from around the network which is helpful for technical things, but for the things we need to think about it seems to me much better to say "hey greener and mxy, does troggy seem to be acting strange? I'm thinking he might need a talking-to...." than to ask mods who don't know the site and prominent users.

Lol
I don't have much contact with myx though

@nitsua60 fwiw, I'm glad you opened the meta on that question specifically. There were lots of high rep users on both sides of that open/close battle and it never seemed like anything was changed or resolved. Seems like a great time to see how people feel in a meta so we can learn going forward.

1:35 AM
XD

@trogdor Then we'll probably task him with pulling you aside and setting you straight. It'd be too personal with either greener or me =)

@nitsua60 clearly this is doppel-troggy

@nitsua60 actually if that was a thing I guess it would actually be a good idea :P

@Rubiksmoose Thanks--I feel pretty strongly that my role as a moderator is as much (if not more) to ensure that the community hashes out issues like this as it is to instruct people on what to do.
@trogdor (Just so everyone watching knows: it's totally not a thing.)

Lol
When did SSD retire anyway?

1:38 AM
@nitsua60 Yeah I like that a lot about the moderation here. And it seems like that is completely by design from all the docs on moderation theory I've read on SE/SO.

Was it literally just now?

I think hands-off moderation in a lot of ways is actually very difficult to achieve and maintain.

72
Q: A thank-you to you all

SevenSidedDieI am retiring as a moderator this week. I made this decision with my heart a few months ago, made it with my head and let my fellow moderators know a few weeks ago, and now that the paperwork is sorted out, I'm letting the rest of the community know. The decision reaches back farther though, and...

Ah ok just last month

@Rubiksmoose There's an inherent tension between "people elected us and trust us and we shouldn't be afraid of acting as an authority" and "we shouldn't trample the community," I think. I'm not sure I always find the "right" position on that spectrum--recognizing that "right" will be different for every situation and for every mood I'm in when I see it and for every observer of the action--but I hope that there are those around here who know they could catch me to say "hey, what're you about?"

1:49 AM
@nitsua60 what are you about?
:P

About two bills.
But I'm working on that =)

Haha

@nitsua60 This is a great attitude. If a leader/moderator/captain isn't willing to listen when someone comes to them concerned about their behavior they are only doing part of their job. Thanks for being great.

Luckily, I make prominent mistakes most days of my professional life. So I have plenty of opportunity to practice! (Usually it's just an arithmetic mistake in front of the classroom. Occasionally it's... worse.)

@nitsua60 actually, you mind if I link you a ~12min video?

1:54 AM
@nitsua60 Haha, math on a whiteboard, we've all been there. In programming classes I'm a strong believer in never debug with an audience. It's not a good look.

@Shalvenay That's fine. Might get to it in an hour or so.
@linksassin In practice, though, I love co-programming.

@nitsua60 Co-programming is good. A lecturer trying to live code while answering questions and then expecting that code to work... not great.

@linksassin heheheh

Yeah, in front of a classroom we've got to know our limits. I can solve a differential equation on the fly in front of a class without embarrassing myself too badly. But coming up with an example DE for the kids to solve using the techniques we have at hand... on that I'll crash and burn more often than not.

@nitsua60 yeah, it doesn't help that $random_diff_eq is not going to be very solvable 99.9% of the time

2:02 AM

Q: Should this question be open?

nitsua60 How I can I roll a number of non-digital dice to get a random number between 1 and 150? was closed by five users, then reopened by five other users. (Many of these first ten users are very high-rep and -experience users--you can see them all in the revision history.) Then it was closed by an el...

@Shalvenay Srsly. Citation: the first time I tried to teach DE and come up with examples during class!
Alright--night, all.

Ben
2:19 AM
@nitsua60 Day, you

Ben
2:34 AM
OK... I have a date with a new girl tonight, and we're seeing endgame. I need to steel myself, because last time I was an emotional wreck all through the movie haha
@doppelgreener I'm at the supermarket and the only Omega 3 they have is "vita-gummies for kids" lol

@Ben think feeesh XD

Ben
I avoid feeesh. Bad run in with a seafood salad earlier in my childhood haha

@Ben interesting first date choice
I just watched Endgame earlier today

Ben
@V2Blast Indeed. Her choice though, and I enjoyed it, so I won't argue haha

fair enough!

Ben
2:48 AM
How did you feel when [spoiler] did [spoiler] and [spoiler][spoiler] the [spoiler]?

@Ben Yeah can't say it's something I would see on a first date. What if she talks in it or something? Could ruin the entire relationship before it starts

@Ben oh man, so [spoiler]

@V2Blast TBH [spoiler] was a much bigger deal than [spoiler]. But I really wish [spoiler] had [spoiler] before [spoiler][spoiler]

@linksassin but what about [spoiler]? That was pretty [spoiler] if I do say so myself

Good lord the spoilers
Now I can't watch the movie, too many people said spoiler
XD

3:01 AM
@trogdor [spoiler alert] I really wasn't expecting Voldemort to steal the Gauntlet...

Lol
Or for Thanos to say rosebud

Must less give it to Sauron.
Then when Bumblebee rocks up to fight the Hulk. Damn that was a cool fight though.

And then they all stop fighting because Paul Rever warns them the British are coming

@linksassin Oh, you didn't watch the stinger scene? That wasn't actually Sauron. It was Mickey, pretending to be Xehanort, pretending to be Maleficent, pretending to be Sauron. Kingdom Hearts 4 is gonna be off the chain.

Q: How to handle "assuming this Jeremy Crawford ruling to be true"-related questions?

NautArchSince WoTC have officially stated that Jeremy Crawford's twitter posts are no longer official and that published sage advice is still just guidance, I've seen a couple of recent questions pop up utilizing those tweets as assumptions and asking for including their use. Do we just treat these as h...

I totally misunderstood this meta
At least one of the questions in the post - the second one:
-3
Q: If you subscribe to JC's ruling, are enemies attacked by a conjured creature considered "targets" of the conjuration spell?

MerudoAccording to Jeremy Crawford the "Dragon's Breath" spell also targets the creatures hit by the exhalation, and Green-Flame Blade targets two creatures. My understanding is that according to JC, any creature "affected" by a spell is considered "targeted" by it. Suppose I subscribe to JC's ruling...

The asker there originally just thought the thing stated in Crawford's tweet was a rule, and was only later edited to ask "Assuming Crawford's tweet were a rule, [what's the answer to this question]?" That led to my misreading of the meta post, so my answer was totally off-base

3:08 AM
Why does anyone take what he says via Twitter as gospel? I just don't get it

deleted it for now

It isn't so much that he is saying something but that he does it by a medium of oppinion without any oversight from other people making rules for the game
:/

Ben
yesterday, by Ben
All JC tweets now redirect to dandwiki

@trogdor well, he is the lead rules designer - but their intent isn't always reflected in what the rules actually state
lol

@V2Blast yeah but lead doesn't mean he should do everything or finalize everything by himself you know?
It isn't that it's him saying or that I don't like what he's saying
It basically boils down to Twitter not being a suitable vector for these decisions

3:12 AM
@trogdor well, it is his own personal Twitter feed. and whatever "official rulings" count for in general, I'm glad the SAC states his tweets are no longer considered official rulings

Ben
All in all though, I highly [spoiler] this movie.

@V2Blast yes that makes me glad too

@Ben Spoilers! How could you reveal that it was a movie?!
:P
I rate it [spoiler] [spoiler]s [spoiler].

Ben
@V2Blast Gasp! My bad! I'm so sorry everyone D:

user15026
@V2Blast what oh no not a moving picture damn it now I can't watch it I know too much

Ben
3:28 AM
Well, you can, you'll just see it coming.

Q: Can a Tiefling have more than two horns?

AustinI was trying to figure out if a tiefling could have more than two horns. The PHB doesn't specifically state how many horns they can have and most depictions just have two so I wasn't sure if that was the max. Can a Tiefling have more than two horns or is two the max?

user15026
@Ben yeah but is it still any good this way?

Ben
Well I mean... I live in Australia. So you can't trust anything I have to say XD

user15026
Oh right, this is very true, you are not to be trusted because you are not real! So...i guess I have to decide for myself.

You can still close your eyes, that way you won't see it coming.

user15026
@BESW this is true!

user15026
@Ben oh my poor brain

Ben
I think that is one of the more famous Reddit threads haha

user15026
I wonder if all the comments are that

Ben
I think so. Any comments that aren't are just "[deleted]"
Even the replies are the same haha.
I daresay this would be carefully moderated hahaha

@V2Blast I think there's an additional issue in that the question is literally asking us to derive a JC opinion from a source that isn't JC (the source being interpretation of an unrelated JC tweet)
That's wrong on too many levels for me to accept

5:47 AM
@kviiri It's tweetles all the way down.

@kviiri yep

6:37 AM
Tweets, I hate those filthy bandits (sorry dumb video game joke)

It's really important they specify the mice are from Mars so that no one'd confuse them with the Biker Mice from Venus.

Well, yes, because one expects the Biker Mice from Venus to be rocking the bare midriff look.

Ben
Secondly Wow

Also I am shocked that Google doesn't seem to have anything for me re: biker mice from Venus.

Ben
There was this... The Biker Mice from Earth

What's your number one DM Tip? Mine is Have the players help create the world and story around them while playing, it allows for everyone to be equally invested at the table.
@jimlikesgames 3. Paint the scene and leading questions from @GauntletRPG 's Jason Cordova. "What in this room tells you that it is inhabitated by the dead?" is such a powerful cue to the players' imagination, and it gets people involved & invested in a scene. Thanks a lot for this!

@BESW how dare you ask the question and preemptively steal my answer :P

Q: If you cast Reincarnation on a body, can you still cast Speak with Dead on it?

OverthinksIn this scenario a person that has been dead for less than 10 days is Reincarnated. Their old body is still there. Someone then casts Speak with Dead on the body. Question: Would the Speak with Dead spell work?

12:11 PM
I really like the idea of a wizard casting wish, losing the stress test
then devoting 2 years of his life to crafting two more wish scrolls.
1 to trade to someone so that they can use the second to wish for his ability to cast wish again
side-thought:
Character idea:
Wizard who has already reached 20th level (or 17th) and cast wish, lost the stresstest and undergone the wish scroll trade....

But the monkey's paw of it was "I mean, sure. If you restart your wizard career, then you can't have undergone the stress. level 1!"
And he's just so bored and narcissistic about it all.

@goodguy5 That seems like an excellent explaination for how they 'learn spells to their spellbook' too. They have recovered/remembered that knowledge.

"You seem to be really good at being a wizard!" The barbarian says, politely.

"THAT'S BECAUSE I'VE ALREADY DONE THIS BEFORE!" howls the wizard, with the frustration of a life already lived.

If you want to drop the 'scroll-trading' from the backstory (it's a bit of a work-around around some gamemechanics and some may think that 'unpure' storytelling) you could just have had some other entity (god, fiend, etc.) cast wish on them. That way you could also write in a dept (which makes for more 'proactive' backstory writing).

dept?

'In return for me, the great Master of Cosmic Cheesecakes, granting returning wish to you, you must bring me the Staff of Divine Gouda!' (or some-such)

12:25 PM
what is "dept", though.
do you mean "debt"?

You owe that entity something. That is a debt.

Q: How do I, as a DM, handle a party that decides to set up an ambush in a dungeon?

Yash CapoorWarning: LMOP Chapter 1 spoilers below When playing LMOP, my PCs cleared out the the west side of the cave in part 1, namely area #6. They then decided that since the area had only one entry and exit, they would basically just wait there and ambush anybody who came by. They subsequently ambushe...

Look back at this post. "That way you could also write in a dept"
hence my confusion

Ah... no worries. My bad.

I also like classes that pretend to be other classes.

12:36 PM
"I'm the dude playing a dude disguised as another dude!"

precisely

@Yuuki I have a player who really dove into his disguise kit proficiency; he is a merchant (bard), but is often disguised as a mercenary, cleric, or barkeep
@goodguy5 That makes me want to play a burly four-elements monk pretending he's a wizard, and mocking other wizards for not being as physically adept as he.

The rogue in my game's party often disguises himself as a monk... named February.

He's a Halfling.

A short monk named February.

@goodguy5 /giggles in March
A four-elements monk with a staff of power can go to work. You can go ham with the staff, have access to some solid spells with the magic item, and can pretend that your Elemental Disciplines are spells. Then you just need to convince your GM to let you reflavour some of your features (Deflect Missiles and Slow Fall include a burst of air to emulate the shield and feather fall spells; hand turns to stone on Stunning Strike to emulate stone to flesh or stoneskin,...
ring of fire surrounds your skull on Stillness of Mind to emulate dispel magic or remove curse, etc)
And you grab one level in sorcerer or wizard so you can at least have the Cantrips you want (and be able to attune to the staff)

12:57 PM
> Water. Earth. Fire. Air. My grandmother used to tell me stories about the old days, a time of peace when the Avatar kept balance between the Water Tribes, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and Air Nomads. But that all changed when the Fire Nation attacked.

XD
@DavidCoffron that's what Magic Initiate is for.

1:18 PM
@Yuuki When a hurrican comes, is that the water nation attacking or the air nation attacking? Or both?

@KorvinStarmast When the flood walls crack and the river floods the valley, it's the Dam nation attacking.

@kviiri Or the levee breaks - I need to check on what has happened lately in St Louis, the River has been rising.

1:47 PM
@goodguy5 Doesn't work for attuning to the staff IIRC
@KorvinStarmast Air nation. Just attacking over the ocean (one if by sea ;))

Q: What is a "spellcaster" for the purpose of magic item attunement?

sadaqahSeveral wands and other magic items in the DMG cite "spellcaster" as an attunement requirement, specifically "requires attunement by a spellcaster" while others list multiple spellcasting classes (e.g., a Staff of Fire "requires attunement by a druid, sorcerer, warlock, or wizard" p. 201). Howeve...

Staff of power specifically requires the class (sorcerer, warlock, or wizard), rather than just 'spellcaster'

oh, dang
my b
I remembered that it could be sorcerer, warlock, or wizard and just assumed it was any "spellcaster"

Weird that bard can't get it

I thought we had a question about magic initiate and attunement requirements but I guess not

If it had just been spellcaster you wouldn't have needed Magic Initiate. Four Elements (and Shadow) do cast their spells so are spellcasters

2:02 PM
@Someone_Evil I thought that four elements didn't actually count as casting spells.

@goodguy5 Some do and some don't

'You can spend 6 ki points to cast cone of cold.'
Some of them are spell-like abilities and so wouldn't count, but yeah

> Casting Elemental Spells /linebreak Some elemental disciplines allow you to cast spells. See the Spellcasting section for the general rules of spellcasting. To cast one of these spells, you use its casting time and other rules, but you don’t need to provide material components for it.

well, look at that

@goodguy5 You can even upcast at the cost of just an extra ki point. THey actually have the cheapest upcasting imo

2:06 PM
and monk level 20 is not super useful, so you're not missing much

Yes, the base cost is expensive, but upcasting is cheap
I don't know how many of the spells are viable upcasts though

@Someone_Evil Wall of Fire is decent
But you're level 17 by that point

cone of cold?

To clarify: I haven't looked at their 'spell list' for which are viable

@Someone_Evil hold person is very strong upcast
i.e. Clench of the North Wind
Thunderwave is decent
Burning Hnads is decent
Other than that there arent many good ones before level 17
(cone of cold and wall of fire are good upcast, but you are waiting until 17)

2:13 PM
@DavidCoffron Agreed. Spend N*+2 ki points to paralyze *N humanoids for a minute seems solid

@Someone_Evil Does use your Wisdom mod for the save which is a little unfortunate as you kind of want high Dex and Con though
Monks don't get extra ASIs which is kind of sad
They are probably the most MAD other than the AT and EKs of the world

@DavidCoffron ... Accordion Thief?

@DavidCoffron Is 'MAD' an abbreviation in that context?

@Someone_Evil "MAD" is short for "MAD About Decisions".

Q: What do MAD and SAD mean?

HellSaintStraight-forward question. I've seen the terms used a lot, mostly in optimization questions and guides, but they aren't usually explained. From googling, it's easy to find that they are abbreviations for Multiple Ability (score) Dependent and Single Ability (score) Dependent, but I'm not sure wha...

2:20 PM
@Yuuki And that is why abbreviations are dangerous

@Yuuki @Someone_Evil Arcane Trickster, Eldritch Knight, Multiple Ability Dependent

Accordion Thief sounds more fun.

@Yuuki Would be a very specific archetype xD

@Yuuki It's called Bard

@Yuuki Is it someone who stole an accordion, or an accordion who steals?

Well that's obscure xD

KoL is a fantastic game and everybody should give it a run-through.

I'm not sure Monk, EK, AT are abnormally MAD for 5e. Barbarians and Paladins are also 3-score dependent and a lot of Clerics are gonna fall into that too.

I mean, AT already doesn't mind having int.
Dex Int is kind of the thing.

I think the argument is Dex, Con, Int, but I think that Con is more optional than for certain other classes (Paladin springs to mind)

2:37 PM
1. can someone parse that game design question into dummy?
2. is that game design question on topic?

I think it is on-topic because it is about ttrpgs (and design thereof which is fine), it might be too broad/opinion based though
As for dummy: 'Is there a better solution for resisting Conditions out there?' (I think)

@Someone_Evil Barbs are STR, CON, DEX but they don't need high Dex. Paladins are STR, CON, CHA but they don't *ned high CHA. Clerics don't need high CON

@DavidCoffron Similar arguments can be made with Monk, AT, EK aswell. 'Need' is gonna vary between characters, parties, and tables.

Ben
There is an incredible difference between the 5e and PF monk. O_O
@DavidCoffron Clerics don't need con? Wat?

2:53 PM
Yes, haven't played PF myself, but from that Q&A it seemed way worse than any 5e classes are (for MAD)

Ben
Do they just have like... Constant Regen or something?
5e seems to have a MAD approach to all classes, by 4th limits it to 2 stats max.
Bar maybe the Ranger
And possibly the spellcasters... Only because they don't need con, simply because they aren't meant to be in combat

Concentration gives them a reason to like it beyond HP, as well.

Ben
Yes, true
I mean, in 5e con is important

for ANY class

@Ben Well they either have heavy armor or can stay at range. It's always nice to have it, but not a dependency

3:02 PM
not just barbarian, etc

Ben
I'm playing a druid in PF, and I came from 5e, so I took that practice when I created him. Wis, con, dex, str, in the and cha, in descending order

@Someone_Evil Monks get so much mileage out of Dexterity and Wisdom, but they don't get the bigger hit dice so really want to have Con.

Yeah. I generally view 14 con as a minimum, maybe 12 if you're really off the front lines. But you can also safely stay at that for a good long while, and not feel too bad if your plan for con doesn't reach 20 by level 20.

Ben
@DavidCoffron Ahh yes, fair

That said, my warlock's got resilient con & 18 con and it's nice to never fail concentration checks.

Ben
3:04 PM
@CTWind Same

And to have either #1 or #2 max HP in the party :-P

@Someone_Evil ATs need Dex and Cha just like any other rogue but also want Int for spells (I guess they could do without Cha though)

Ben
@CTWind You're not playing a hexblade are you?

@Someone_Evil EKs need Strength or Dex (usually want a bit of both), and Int. I guess they aren't that bad
plus EKs and ATs get extra ASs so the MAD isn't as bad as it is for monks

Ben
@DavidCoffron EKs are a class that is planned for

3:07 PM
I weren't saying you were wrong. I was offering that is was slightly strongly worded.
On a seperate note: I have now learned what 'rocket tag' refers to.

@goodguy5 I'm only here for about 10 minutes until I begin my commute back home.

no problem!
I can pay attention that long
So, can you give an example of what you're looking for? I'm having trouble understanding

I'm looking for either design techniques/principles/etc. that solve the listed downsides of a resistance-as-depletable resource, or examples of fully-assembled solutions to it (which I'd then analyse to figure out the principles).
I'm not sure how to rephrase that to make it more transparent.

3:22 PM
So like.... let's use hold/dominate creature.

Save or suck.

What would you prefer to happen?

I would prefer the struggle to gain control to not be rocket tag, for multiple different approaches to gaining control to both meaningfully contribute, yet to avoid both the perverse incentives mentioned and the possibility of a a successful control from turning into an inevitable overall victory (for afflictions that aren't meant to be that strong).

How does that compare to the 5e methodology where most things allow for a save every turn?

The closest thing I saw to a solution was outside TTRPGs, and would probably not be very playable in a TTRPG.

(also, feel free to join back after your commute, provided your schedule allows)

I do not know how modern AD&D does it, I only barely tried playing 2e.

3:26 PM
The current D&D has an initial save, then for most dramatic effects, you get additional chances.
for example, hold monster:
Choose a creature that you can see within range. The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or be paralyzed for the duration. This spell has no effect on undead. At the end of each of its turns, the target can make another Wisdom saving throw. On a success, the spell ends on the target.

So save-or-succumb and save-to-recover?

yes

That's the first of the two big framework I wrote I'm aware of, and one that I found unsatisfying (which is why I'm looking at resistance-as-depletable-resource in the first place).

Would limited rerolls count?

I have some number of points.
I can use the points to either reroll or add to a roll
I failed my saving throw thing.
I spend a point to succeed if I was close, or try to reroll better if I wasn't close.
(fate points, btw)

@Ben But it need not be maxed.

3:35 PM
I'm not sure that helps. Anyway, I'm off. I'll try to catch up when I'm home, but am likely to become unavailable some time after that too.

good luck

“Cerebral parasites and where to find them” would have been a much more grim Harry Potter movie

@doppelgreener ANything would have been better than the ones that showed up. :( (My opinion)

@vicky_molokh Yea, I'm just not sure what you're looking to get out of this. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
I liked the first new movie. Just lots of fun cgi and a likable main character
the second one was weirdly all over the place.

@goodguy5 Sometimes, when examining a mechanic, we as players forget that the designers of various games tried a bunch of things that didn't work before they settled on what was in the game. I suspect that vicky's frustration is that other mechanics seem to have been left on the cutting room floor.

Q: As a GM, is it bad form to ask for a moment to think when improvising?

SkidsdevAs an amateur GM, I, like many other new GMs, often find myself having to improvise in the wake of unexpected player action. In the past, my approach to this has been to rush to think of something on the spot, which often results in a poorly thought out, cheesy/cliche, or just plain boring respo...

I haven't actually seen it, and by the time I was seriously considering it I started hearing weird things about the second.

@goodguy5 And I just got that email: nope, no new group to try out Numenera with. The group broke up before Session zero. (Arrggghhh).

Then Crimes of Grindelwald came out and I felt the correct choice was just to not pursue any further Harry Potter media at all.

@KorvinStarmast oof

@doppelgreener Well played!

3:41 PM
Flawless..... victory?
@doppelgreener I think that Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them is a fun movie and worth watching. Just kind of mentally separate it from HP.

Gotcha

@Ben Nah, fey tomelock. My longest-running 5e character, currently level 15. Built when probably only the PHB, MM, & DMG was out :-P

@CTWind My Fey Chainlock went dormant a few years back when my nephew headed off to college. I really was looking forward to that group/campaign ...

@KorvinStarmast "Better to have 'locked and lost, than never to have 'locked at all"

I had envy in my eyes when the celestial pact came out. Our group really needs a heavier supporter.

3:57 PM
Raistlin: the original warlock.
Of himself.

4:15 PM
@CTWind The best CC is death.

I'm still hung up on this game design question.

They don't like Resistance as a resource because...
- they can run out
- if you're bombarded with effects, you have to "game" which ones to resist?
- the system to get them back can be unfun

It seems they just don't like disabling effects and this question is unanswerable.

Resources have to be able to run out for it to be a resource. Otherwise, it's just an ability.

The ability to disable other creatures should itself be limited in some way.

I mean.... if you make something unfun, then it's unfun.

It's conceivable there's something entirely unconsidered that actually makes it work well, that someone figured out because of their game's specific needs forced them to produce it. Us staring at blank pages can't think of it because we're staring at blank pages.

@goodguy5 Home. Either it's a very complex question, or I'm bad at explaining it. Because those are different from my points. I do want there to be disabling effects, but the question is about a the specifics.
Catching up.

@vicky_molokh what is your usual system of choice

Creativity being proportionate to constraints, and all.

4:29 PM
@goodguy5 I come from GURPS, which defaults to save-or-succumb for afflictions (and whose affliction construction is somewhat infamous), but has a few alternative mechanics that are more like ablative (Symptoms and the much much more recent Control Points mechanic).

My guess is that a system that works needs to be supremely well balanced to work

For example:
"I want to give people a resource with which they can alter the story to their characters' benefit."
"OK."
"But it runs out, and that is bad."
"... But it's a resource. They run out."
"Yes, and I want it to refill. But I can't just make it refill too fast."
"What if it refills only when they cede control of the story to their characters' detriment?"
Boom, Fate economy.

The resource running out is OK, but there should be recoverable in a timescale that makes it still relevant in the conflict, and there are some alternatives for how exactly that should happen.

I think FATE was mentioned in the comments

@Someone_Evil that was I

4:31 PM
I wonder if I should just give a non-tabletop example that has good and not so good sides (but is hard to convert to tabletop without slowing down the game too much).

I don't mean to suggest we're gonna come up with a solution on the spot here between us. I just mean to say there might be something for it, so it's not inherently unanswerable. We don't know it, and that's OK. Someone who does know it can answer the question. Until then it would be unanswered, and community will bump it for attention periodically.

What is the point of it recharging mid-conflict rather than just getting more uses?

Like, what is the functional difference between 4 resist points and "3, but you get one back sometimes"?
And I've seen systems (VERY VERY rules light systems) do a

"You get some number of points back after failing with no points remaining"

@goodguy5 Largely the prevention of 'succumb to one, succumb to all subsequent ones as a result' situations.

@goodguy5 If you have more than one 'sometime' over the same timespan you would have more, otherwise you have less

@vicky_molokh but you still have a chance to resist based on your stats, right?
like roll a die to resist (or the enemy rolls to attack. whichever)? or is that not what you're saying?

4:36 PM
@goodguy5 'Chance' implies the save-or-succumb mechanic, which is a different thing altogether (and one that I would rather not pull into this discussion for simplicity's sake - the topic is complex as is).

Are you suggesting a system that has disabling effects, purely as a command?

Monster 1: Action. Blind 1 creature.
Creature: uh..... no. I spend a resistance point.

or something else?

@Yuuki I'm thinking more "We could use more greater restorations and between-combat heals. And maybe less of a failure point for number of people in the party who can rez in a pinch."

For simplicity's sake in the context of this example, let's say yes. E.g. a PC casts a freeze nova that does 5 units of freezing affliction, and targets in range either lose 5 resistance points, or, for those targets that can't afford it, are frozen for some number of turns. Which means that it'll take multiple castings to freeze more resistant opponents.
However, there are issues with such a simplistic implementation:
- If there is no recovery, then successfully freezing an enemy once makes it trivial to keep freezing/stunning/etc. the enemy indefinitely until defeat. Which is why recovery of some sort in combat time would be a useful mechanic.
- Different afflictions all ablating the resistance is generally a good thing for synergies, but there's the risk of creating a perverse incentive of splitting abilities into those whose purpose is solely ablating the resistances, and those that are meant to 'pound' an already-ablated target.
- Some sort of conditional recovery is likely to fix issue #1, but may make the system overengineered if it isn't sufficiently streamlined.

4:52 PM
So, disabling is an infinite resource inofitself, which is the first opportunity for problem.

Probably not infinite. But normally games are forced to tip the balance in favour of offence in the first place in order to avoid stalemates or even just drawn-out, passive conflicts.
