In reference to Garda
The writers in the first game really did not foresee this game being as popular as it was . Lol

@Yuuki @kviiri makes me wonder if a canonical "why was $myfavoriteuser suspended?" meta question with "we won't discuss it, here are the good reasons why" would be in order?

@Ben Not Ogden's wife. Ah, I see that Miniman got it already.

@nitsua60 It'd certainly be handy, assuming the votes cooperated.

@DavidCoffron a metric I can see that (I think) gets closest to what you're describing is "number of users active (posted, commented, edited, or even just voted) on the site on at least one day per each of the last five weeks." That rolling average tends to hover just south of 1000. (Lowest I've ever seen is still above 700.)
If you change that to "active on the site at least 5 days of week, each of last 5 weeks" that hovers around--you guessed it--100.
@Miniman I feel like meta.SE might have something like that lying around that we can bang into service. Might have some time to rummage tonight. That'll currently sit at #3 on my priority list, 75 minutes out from bedtime =)

Ben
@KorvinStarmast Yeah. I think I might make Garda Gillian's grandmother. She can be useful as a plothook

Whoa. First dupehammer.
Think I'm gonna feel it tomorrow. I probably should've stretched.
The "clear" line--as clear as it gets--is "are you doing something you couldn't do with just your one account?"
Voting for yourself? Clearly not okay.
Answer a question with the second account? Fine.
Comment on your main account's post with a second account saying "this answer's awesome, would read again!" Not okay. (Because while you could leave that comment with your main account, you couldn't do so *without everyone knowing it's you*.)
Suggest edits rather than just make them? I'm not exactly sure where that'd fall. Technically (IIRC) in the architecture as a high-rep user you are sugges
That said, one has to wonder what edits you'd have to be suggesting with your lesser account that would get you caught as a sock....

12:59 AM
Huh?

@trogdor Someone upstream asked if they could create a second account to suggest edits, given their main account is a "trusted user."

That's a weird idea,... Using a lower rep account to,... Be taken less seriously?

Ben
WEll, no I can understand that.

@trogdor I know one user who feels very strongly that way and so gives away bounties enough to stay under a particular rep threshold.

Ben
Instead of just editing a post, sometimes it might be worthwhile to suggest an edit, to be reviewed by other users. Having the lower rep automatically forces that

1:01 AM
Fair enough
I don't really edit other people's posts in the first place so
Wtv works for people who do I guess
As long as it isn't some type of abuse

Ben
I'm at the point where my edits are automatically accepted, so when it comes to re-formatting a big post, to maybe re-word what they're saying to help with context, or maybe to try and make the post more relevant, big changes like that, I feel, would probably be better off being reviewed, rather than just automatically accepted.
Whereas minor spelling edits and that sort of stuff is more than likely just fine
> Canace is Wirt's mother, as mentioned by Gillian. She died from grief when Wirt was abducted by demons, causing her son to grow bitter and withdrawn after being rescued by Griswold.
How long was Wirt gone??

1:23 AM
I guess that in that case I would be most concerned with wether the original poster is ok with the edit in question
If it still says the thing they intended to say

@Ben Hmm, good question, in D1 that was left sorta vague, not sure what the retcon was. Wirt's leg was a weapon in D2.

Ben
@trogdor Exactly. The review process can allow for that to happen.
@KorvinStarmast I've been doing a little bit of ret-conning... with some suggestions from others. In this case I made it that his father was once that went in to the cathedral, before the party arrive, and his mother died of grief from that. The events of Wirt's leg happens as part of the story. That way Wirt can be a bit more involved in the story, rather than being just a salesman.

cool. And he was quite the con man/rip off artist. Famous for it, in D1 circles ... :)

Ben
Precisely. I have use of that kind of behaviour...

And then there's Farnham, the drunk ... 8^D

Ben
1:36 AM
I've been doing a bit of research into a few of the characters. Normally you wouldn't get much from their original dialogue, but apparently a few of them have a bit of a more elaborate involvement in the story than first thought

And of course the fans made up all kinds of stories via fan fiction. The Pixips example above with Cain is but one.

2:07 AM
@KorvinStarmast Saw your e-mail, should be able to get back to you tomorrow. (We had "revisit day" today, for accepted students, and so I'm a day behind on life.)

Ben
@KorvinStarmast I did enjoy that one

2:42 AM
@nitsua60 I know how you feel. (Day behind on life) Happens to me a lot, but maybe that's my age?
@Ben I'll see if I can find that old story about the Farnham conspiracy. Vague recollections ....

@KorvinStarmast You mean it's possible to not feel a day behind? How do I achieve this mystical nirvana?

Ben
Well, Pepin is apparently evil so...

@linksassin Rye whiskey is one path to that objective, I think. sips

@KorvinStarmast Well even if it's not it will make the journey more enjoyable

Aye
@Ben I guess the official back story is: Farnham was one of the original band of warriors led into the depths of the Cathedral by Archbishop Lazarus to rescue Prince Albrecht. Unbeknownst to them, Lazarus had already made a pact with Diablo and the entire rescue operation was a trap, leading them into The Butcher's lair to be slaughtered.
Farnham was able to save himself and Griswold by escaping to the surface, where he proceeded to drink himself into a stupor. He reentered the belly of the Cathedral several times in an effort to look for his missing wife and daughter, eventually emerging with his daughter. However, she was so wounded that Aidan chose to end her life by cutting her down. Farnham then proceeded to lose foreseeably lose himself in the bottom of a bottle.

5e build question:
I have a Mastermind rogue 9/Battle Master Fighter 5, and we just got our last level up of the campaign. Figured I'd take my 6th fighter level since an ASI's the only thing I get either way, and the fighter level at least gives an extra HP regained for Second Wind plus a larger hit die.

Are there any feats particularly worth taking, or should I just bring my Dex up from 18 to 20?

(The rest of the party's got most things pretty well covered, I think. We have a paladin, a Lore bard, a Conjuration wizard, a Battle Master fighter, and a celestial warlock/shadow sorcerer/figh

What feats have you taken already? Where did the first 3 ASIs go?

no feats at the moment. I was a total newbie when I built this character so I think he started with 14 Str, 14 Dex, and 10 Con
current stats are 14 Str, 18 Dex, 12 Con, 14 Int, 8 Wis, and 16 Cha
we used the standard array
and I had no idea what I was doing when we started out

Ah that makes sense. I was confused how a 14th level character didn't have a 20 in their primary stat.
I can't think of a feat that would be better than the +2 to dex.
Dex is just such an overpowered stat in 5e. Particularly if you are using finesse weapons it just just super useful. I assume you are wearing light armor not medium?

Medium, actually
part of the reason I multiclassed into fighter in the first place was because my initial stat allocation was terrible so my AC was awful
wearing a Breastplate +1
current AC of 17, thanks to the Mariner fighting style

That +1 is from Mariner or is it a +1 Breastplate?
Your AC would be the same in Studded Leather and higher after increasing dex to 20
12 + 5 (Dex) + 1 (Mariner) = 18 AC

5:15 AM
ah, shoulda been 18 with the +1 from Mariner
I had it as an AC modifier on Roll20 but for some reason it was unchecked

Ah ok, well in that case it will be the same.
Do you have enough HP or do you go down in combat alot?

generally pretty good on HP now
I think my HP is one of the highest in the party :D

So you don't need tough then. Dual Wielder would give you +1 to AC and the ability to draw both weapons in a single turn.
But the +1 to Hit and damage of Dex is probably better

honestly the Scimitar of Speed with its unconditional bonus-action attack means I virtually never use another weapon :P

You don't have to use it just hold the dagger in the other hand to get the benefit.
But yeah, not that useful really.

5:25 AM
yeah I know, I just mean I rarely need to draw another weapon, especially in the same turn. so it'd just be the +1 to AC

Magic Initiate Warlock for Hex maybe?

which at this point isn't that necessary

You could get that same benefit from Medium Amour master as well. +1 to AC

What race?

halfling

5:38 AM
I'd second the Dex recommendation, but if that's (understandably) too boring, some useful feats: Alert, Defensive Duelist, Observant, Lucky, Resilient, are all good for just about anyone. Martial Adept is nice if there's some maneuvers you'd like to have and don't already, or if you find yourself running out of superiority on a regular basis. Bountiful Luck isn't especially fun for you, but your teammates might thank you. Second Chance is...eh. I'd prefer Defensive Duelist, personally.

Heh. maxing Dex sounds fine to me :)

As a melee rogue, triggering Sneak Attack off-turn is nice, so Sentinel is a weird but workable pick.
But yeah, Dex is almost certainly the best option.
Sorry for the spiel :)

Thanks for the help!

That Scimitar of Speed really is an incredible item for any finesse melee person.

It is. Didn't realize how amazing it could be until a session or two after I got it
the unconditional bonus action attack also basically means I can do anything with my action

5:44 AM
(My number 1 goal for any character who primarily uses Attack actions is finding a way to attack with a bonus action.)

Ben
@Miniman Horns

Wow, I never even thought about it being unconditional. That really is fantastic.

@Miniman That thought is what leads most people to believe that two-weapon fighting is a good option.

@Ben That's one way, yeah. Polearm Master, Berserker, Battlerager, dual-wielding...

It is. I can Ready an attack for an off-turn Sneak Attack, I can Dodge, I can take a healing potion, etc.

5:47 AM
@linksassin Yeah...it might even have been true if they hadn't provided so many methods that are just better.

@V2Blast Does a readied action counts as a different turn? I wouldn't allow sneak attack on a bonus action as well as a readied action.

@linksassin well, if you ready it to go off on someone else's turn, then yeah. it's a different turn.

Ben
Or use Matt Mercer's homebrew rules

I also recently got a special healer's kit from an NPC that basically gives me the benefit of the Healer feat, so I'm kinda like a thief in that I can attack and heal someone in the same turn :P

@Miniman Exactly, it's good at first, maybe second level but once the other options are available it's just terrible
@Ben Matt has stopped using most of those in season 2 due to balance issues experience late in campaign one.
@V2Blast I'm not sure that's true, if it is I have been playing rogue's all wrong...

5:49 AM
It is indeed true.

Ben
Good. I had... issue with that

though for most rogues, readying an attack means you're not attacking on your turn so it doesn't give you any extra damage
with the Scimitar of Speed, or with Action Surge, you can attack on your own turn and then ready an attack for someone else's turn
though it does feel cheesy so I don't do it too often :P

Damn... that is useful new information. I always assumed it was part of the turn you readied it on.

@V2Blast Or Haste!
But yeah, it's pretty difficult to do.

Q: How would Beacon of Hope interact with Lay on Hands?

guessLogically, I'm thinking it won't have any effect as Lay on Hands heals an exact amount of hp (in my opinion, they should specify that Beacon of Hope only works on healing that actually have rolls, instead of saying "any healing"), but possibly the Paladin would only have to consume 1 point from t...

That's not a bad idea though. It's been a while since I checked through my questions.\

@Derpy what's happening? I don't see a post from you this year.

In 5th Edition, the Medicine skill should be innately associated with Intelligence ability checks, not Wisdom ability checks. Change my View.

@Xirema Most of a doctor's efficacy (especially in classical medicine) is experience, not knowledge.

@Xirema Urine tests are some of the most valuable diagnostic tools a doctor has, therefore Medicine is rightfully associated with WIS checks.

@Yuuki Boo this man

@Yuuki I'll allow it.

4:52 PM
Rejoinder: "Wisdom" in 5th Edition D&D does not actually mean "Wisdom", aka the colloquial term in the English language for the collective sum of our experiences. "Wisdom" in 5th Edition D&D should have actually been called "Intuition", since that maps to how it is used in every respect in the game except for Medicine checks.

@Xirema What if your character specializes in Homeopathy?

@GreySage Then their Medicine checks become Charisma ability checks. ;)

Deception is generally associated with Charisma

@Someone_Evil ^

Two people running at the same joke there...

5:02 PM
Clearly, mine is the only ironclad reasoning.

My poop†posting notwithstanding, I do generally think that Wisdom is misnamed, and that Intelligence probably should have been named Wisdom, and Wisdom named Intuition.
Because that would make more sense for how those abilities are actually used in-game, especially in 5th Edition.
But both because A) It's called Wisdom, and B) It's the stat used by Clerics and Druids, we take it for granted that the Medicine skill should be associated with Wisdom and don't think about it.

Personally I feel like I call for Intelligence (Medicine) checks just as often as Wisdom ones

And then when DMs need to call for generic Ability checks without a specific skill, the choice between Intelligence and Wisdom is completely arbitrary.

Q: Do parry bonuses stack?

SteveCDo parry bonuses stack? So for example if a character is using two Rapiers (Parry +1, see p.72), do these stack, so their Parry is +2 ? And continuing, does the +1 Parry bonus from the Trademark Weapon edge (see p.44) also stack with the parry from a weapon, i.e. would a Trademark rapier be a +...

Whereas if these abilities were named "Intelligence" and "Intuition" (or "Wisdom" and "Intuition" if having two skills with 'In' prefixes is a problem), you'd have a lot less confusion over which ability should be called for, and why.

5:15 PM
what about animal handling?
And if nothing else, they didn't want to overload int

@goodguy5 I mean, they've made INT the dump stat of 5e, so mission accomplished I guess. XD
I think Animal Handling makes perfect sense for an "Intuition" stat. People who work well with animals are often stereotyped as being highly empathetic, which fits in well with the understanding of "Wisdom" being an ironic codeword for "Intuition".

5:34 PM
@Yuuki both amazing and oddly timely on my end

6:00 PM
@Xirema I disagree that the choice is arbitrary, it is just that many GMs don't know or don't follow what the abilities mean according to the rules, so the choice is often table-dependent

@DavidCoffron I mean, to me, that's what I would describe as Arbitrary. ;)
The fact that a lot of GMs aren't following what's in the book is nominal though.
> Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics

- Strength, measuring physical power
- Dexterity, measuring agility
- Constitution, measuring endurance
- Intelligence, measuring reasoning and memory
- Wisdom, measuring perception and insight
- Charisma, measuring force of personality

— Ability Scores, PHB, pg. 173

@Xirema Eh. You are probably right. I personally only use arbitrary when there is no possible reason for a decision rather than when a choice is often made without reason despite the opportunity for it (like reasoning based on the rules). But arbitrary doesn't technically mean what I use it like

Even the PHB uses 'Wisdom' as code for intuition-like features, and makes no mention of it being about 'experience' or 'knowledge'.
@DavidCoffron I doubt it technically means the way I use it either!
Yay for the Platonic Ideal of Signifiers!
> Wisdom reflects how attuned you are to the world around you and represents perceptiveness and intuition.

A Wisdom check might reflect an effort to read body language, understand someone's feelings, notice things about the environment, or care for an injured person. The Animal Handling, Insight, Medicine, Perception, and Survival skills reflect aptitude in certain kinds of Wisdom checks.

— Wisdom, PHB, pg. 178
So my original complaint stands, but at least it's not technically WotC's fault that everyone keeps using the stat wrong—though they could have renamed the abilities in 5th edition to at least force migrating players to read things and make sure they learn the new vernacular, instead of just assuming the old vernacular from 3.x/4 was still valid.
(Assuming it was valid back in 3.x/4, which is not something I necessarily know to be true)

@Xirema honestly this was my understanding from PF as well, though it has been a long time.

6:18 PM
I still feel like Medicine is just applied Survival

@Xirema It does seem like "care for an injured person" was just thrown in there for unrelated reasons. I don't rate my IRL medicine skill as a function of how perceptive or attuned I am to the world.

@GreySage I think it was just a way for them to say clerics and druids are good at this, so let's make it wisdom by default

^ That makes the most sense from a designer reason standpoint

@DavidCoffron That was my hypothesis as well. They wanted to connect the skill to those classes.

One of the Artificer subclasses is a healer, right?

@Someone_Evil well, the alchemist has access to some healing anyways. Not sure I would consider it a major source though

GcL
Do you all experience a lot of in combat healing in 5e?

@goodguy5 I was going to make a joke in here about the tag.
But I don't know if anybody is going to get your comment lol

you got it. that's enough for me

@GcL definitely some, but not a lot.

@Someone_Evil Both versions of the Artificer gain access to healing spells.

@GreySage Clinical and patient experience makes people excellent judges of the chance that "this guy is going to be an a-hole." I don't know why it makes people so jaded practical, but that is my perception of care for others and wisdom.

yes

@GcL Ever since Xanathar's Guide to Everything, our DM has had to consider nerfing in-combat healing because of how powerful it can be.

@Xirema I've had no issues with in-combat healing when smart combatants were involved
In a world where clerics are a thing, combatants know to target them

But I've never had it used or abused at my tables so I'll take your word on the issues

King giant is the most gigantic.

I suppose It would be a small leap (no pun intended) to give them mild psionics
I just need a way to make the dakka sounds and wormhole by yelling "'ere we go!" repeatedly.
also, red horses go faster

@Xirema just ask the DM to remove that spell; no need to break up the whole healing system.

@KorvinStarmast I feel like there is ample overreaction to healing spirit. It's not especially problematic from my point of view.

6:53 PM
@goodguy5 The giant Ordning is basically "The bigger the species of giant, the higher rank they are"
Unrelated: I finally got a satisfactory answer to one of my SO questions... by self-answering it.

@DavidCoffron I feel similarly. But for those who do not like it, I think it simpler to just not add it to the spell list.

GcL
@KorvinStarmast Dedicated font of healing is pretty interesting. My players haven't used it yet. I think I'd offer up increasingly difficult and cunning foes as choices. See where it levels out. I expect cause blindness would be particularly disarming for the druid or cleric in this case.

@GreySage is that strictly true? I thought there was some more nuance to it aside from hill giants at the bottom and cloud giants at the top

GcL
@GreySage Is that a satisfying feeling? Was it self satisfying? /S

@DavidCoffron The problem with the spell isn't necessarily that it's impossible for DMs to work around; it's that it forces DMs to work around it.

@goodguy5 Fire giants are hot. Frost giants are cold.

that's not the ordning though

It reminds me a bit of the way that a card can be overpowered in Hearthstone even if it only has like a 51% win rate; its win rate is only so low because literally every other deck in the metagame is built to handle the archetype built around that card.

GcL
@goodguy5 It totally depends on what you're ordering. Who wants a cold hamburger?!

@GcL Storm giants are yes. Fomorians are no.

\shudder\ fomorians

6:57 PM
Cave trolls are in. Hill giants are out.
Something something up and down.

Anyone remember Jungle Trolls?
I think they were a 3.0 race

GcL
@goodguy5 3rd edition was a race to the bottom

ha
basically a playable troll race, iirc.

@GcL It was, actually. I got 1 other answer (in and of itself an accomplishment), and that answer was completely useless in a "poster fundamentally didn't understand what I was trying to solve" kind of way.
@goodguy5 Storm > Cloud > Fire = Frost > Hill > any other giant-related creature (Ogre, Fomorian, Ettin...)

so it IS just size. neat

There's the intermediate species of giant, stormcloud, that will just rain on your parade.

@GcL Colin, I am still wrestling with the healing/HP bag aspect of my Circle of Flames druid idea, and got an interesting idea from a GiTP guy, and a poiunt @T.J.L. made in a comment under the question. I am now playing with it.

Dominate person is the 5th edition sudo.
@KorvinStarmast What question? I was just wondering how often people used healing in combat.

@KorvinStarmast I still maintain that the right way to do it is with Temp HP instead of healing. Also, I'd recommend L2→D4, L6→D6, L10→D8, L14→D10, since that's more consistent with how other druid features (like the Spores Druid) scale.
^ Not stuff that deserves or merits a full answer though.
Since I don't really have a rigorous defense for those claims other than "I like that concept better".

@Rubiksmoose Yo, sorry about that comment. I just realized I was replying with edit in mind, but not the original
I didn't realize it was edited.
In case you missed it, don't worry about it, but essentially "The question is fine as it is" *because you edited it*

Q: Does Dispel Magic work on Tiny Hut?

AshRandomOver the weekened one of my players stumped me when she made the claim that Dispel Magic wouldn't work on Tiny Hut due to these lines: Creatures and objects within the dome when you cast this spell can move through it freely. All other creatures and objects are barred from passing through...

@Axoren no worries! Thanks for the heads up :)

I am having the darnedest time with timeouts to the SE server. Later this is frustrating.

I knew about the Warcraft D&D supplement, but had no idea there was an official Diablo II one: blizzardwatch.com/2019/04/02/got-diablo-dungeons-dragons

That's an interesting approach. I want to use a reaction, and to spread out the HP pool that the wild shape usually provides - but to the whole party. THP not a bad approach. @Xirema
@CTWind I still have my Diablo II Collector's Edition D&D adventure.

7:40 PM
@Xirema So do rope trick, tiny hut, identify, and all the ressurection spells. They don't get nearly as much flack

@DavidCoffron Oh we abused rope trick so hard in my first D&D campaign.
Everything from impromptu safe resting spot to the classic "drop a bunch of explosives and hide in an extraplanar space".

The past hour just kicked the crap out of me. Work got really busy and so many things broke.

@kviiri I don't quite, as it turns out, have the bandwidth this week to work on it. Feel free to take a stab at it yourself, or just promise to poke me again in a week or two to remind me to pull something together! (@Miniman and @BESW may also be helpful to bounce ideas/drafts off of if you do want to draw it up yourself.)

The subject is discussed here, but it's not a super clear discussion because meta:

Q: Avoid the Streisand Effect - be clear about the reason when suspending an account

Shog9This sort of thing has happened a few times now... "Hey, did you see? User X was boxed!" "User X? Why?" "I donno... Maybe he... " (wild speculation ensues. waffles are blamed.) It's generally quite easy to notice when a user gets thrown in The Penalty Box. You see the tell-tale 1 when...
