7:01 PM
yeah :(

@NautArch your build looks serviceable. I would give him some obscure hobby as an interest hook so that he's not just a 1-dimensional beat-stick
brewing, maybe (He IS a dwarf, afterall)

@goodguy5 and playing the bagpipes
I was going to user brewers supplies to make my own (very bad) soap.

hilarious
love it
like artisan soap, but bad

exactly, but I think it's awesome.

"Smells like home"
- It smells like mud and mold
"Oh, you've been there, then?"
Good, because it would be very very easy to just have that character and be like "uh, I hit things"

7:04 PM
@goodguy5 what's your thought on the Shieldmaster vs Dual-Wielder?
@goodguy5 Which is basically our other fighter who has 3 INT.

that they're both not superhelpful. I'd just take the asi
wtf do you even do with a 4 cha.

Is it like a shy, unconfident, emo kid?

@goodguy5 Well, if I just take the ASI, then I'm going S&B for the extra AC anyway.
And if i've got the shield, why not tget the bonuses that the shieldmaster can give me?

I've misunderstood this entire time that you were going to hold a shield regardless.
Dual wielder

@goodguy5 Well, no, but i won't dual wield without the ability to add my modifier.
So that defaults to shield because I don't want to do another GWM build like my paladin was.

and the feat gives you +1ac and an effective +1 to damage

7:08 PM
@goodguy5 DW gives me +1 AC but gives me another attack for 1d8+4 (currently, but i'll take the ASI at level 6)

yea. do that
I misunderstood way back when you said you were "thinking about sword and board" as "I'm definitely doing that. do I take shield master or dual wielder"

Well, the problem with that is commander's strike. When I use it, I give up 2 attacks, which currently is approximately the same damage as long as i hit on both.
So it's kind of a wash at this level.

You should have incongruent weapons and a like catchphrase for them that's not great.
and commander's strike isn't going to be used every time. It's for when it's useful

@goodguy5 True, and my goal is to use it as often as I can when it does matter more.
Giving the rogue another sneak attack can be big.

right. but sometimes you're the one doing the thing. and that's perfect
@goodguy5 like a warhammer and a battle axe called "Prose" and "Precipice" or something.

7:12 PM
And not worry about getting an extra +2 AC at this point. My stats are also low enough that I could opt to pursue shieldmaster later on and not feel about getting another feat over an ASI once I have STR and CON up to 20.
@goodguy5 I was planning on going longsword and warhammer.

effectively the same (although, booo dwarves don't use longswords)

@goodguy5 they don't?

@NautArch They can, but tradition (as reflected in training) is axes and hammers

*Gimli, the Platonic ideal of a dwarf, doesn't use swords

@Someone_Evil Maybe that's why I've got a 4 CHA. I don't really fit in.

7:16 PM
"Man, dad, swords sure are cool, gee golly"
-No son of mian, uses one of them hooman longswords. now. pick up yer acks.

@goodguy5 But I just wanna...play bagpipes!
<bagpipe music starts up>

"you're full of hot air!"

to sum, you think i should go DW?

yes
And also snag the "bagpipe master" feat at level 8.

moar damage moar better being the thought?
I also want the better I role when using the bagpipes, the more awful it sounds :P

7:21 PM
@NautArch you're already halfway there with a +4 damage. Though, like I said, an ASI would give you +1 to hit and +1 damage with your weapons

@goodguy5 I'll pick that up next level. Although I guess I could do it now and pick up DW next level.

^what I would do

@Someone_Evil What's your vote?

@NautArch I think going with the shield+commander's strike is more interesting (/less used) character and again cooperative which I try to push my own characters towards. Whether you then go feat or ASI, I can't say too much on. How many Dex save effects are your party usually exposed to?

@Someone_Evil I don't think its clearly an effect. I think dex saves are a bit more common, but again, with my current -1, i'm not doing well on those to begin with.
only because I think there are a lot of spells out there that call for dex saves, but i'm just making that stat up.

7:47 PM
hey. um does anyone know any good online wargames

How are we defining wargames?
Real-time, turn-based, etc.

turn based strategy game. um something like table top wargames

So like Warhammer that you can play online?

As in video game, play by post, roll20ish?

I'm sure Tabletop Simulator has something rolling around in the Steam Workshop in that vein.

7:50 PM
any of those really. I know diplomacy is thing. I would prefer it to be web based

(mandatory "arqade might have better luck")

pvp, specifically?
And, imo, diplomacy isn't a wargame, despite any illusion as such.

not really Pve is fine

amount of money you're willing to pay? (zero, is acceptable)

zero
i'm so broke right now it's not even funny

@goodguy5 mmm actually you might have better luck with Board Games, though I don't know how active their chat is

7:54 PM
actually does anyone know any good online games like nation states or something like that format wise

dunno what that is

I think I remember playing Nation States a long time ago.

oh, it looks like Utopia

IIRC, it's a browser-based country management sim.
You enact or veto various bills and that determines different things about your country.

I'm bored and I need something I can play on my schools network

7:57 PM
@Gwideon also, you should.... uh... school.

done with my stuff

^^

Even the math stuff?

i'm just bored in general
yep

so...asked my DM about improvised weapon/shield dual-wielder. Hope they don't search the stack...

7:59 PM
fair enough.

Q: Does wielding a shield as an improvised weapon count for Dual Wielder and Two-Weapon fighting style?

Tobias FizzlewigLet's say I am wielding a dagger and shield, and I am using the shield as an improvised weapon. Would Dual-Wielder Feat and the Dual Wielding fighting style be in effect while I am using these as improvised weapons?

I wrote the dissenting answer

@NautArch I think I downvoted it. let's check
I did now :P

hahaha

@NautArch So it took me way longer than I expected to run stats because it turns out my TTD function wasn't implemented in my current environment, so I had to rewrite it. Anyways, I dumped them in the Plane of Math.

@NautArch There, I'll make it up to you.

8:02 PM
@Xirema On my way in...

i'm gonna move to not a bar
anyways I'm just kinda looking for an interesting experience

8:40 PM
@Gwideon I think we all are...

yeah

Q: Mordhau grip for bludgeoning damage?

generic_userI play in a short dnd 5e campaign, with many undead type monsters, like skeletons and the like. My character has a Longsword, which deals slashing damage. Now I would like if it would be possible to take my sword in the "Mordhau Grip" (basically grabbing the sword on the blade and using it to s...

9:24 PM
@NautArch Sorry I wandered off ...
@NautArch I would go shield master every time. I really enjoyed shield master, and the dex save benefit is non trivial.

@KorvinStarmast Even with my -1 dex? :D

Q: What should we do about these two duplicate questions?

Someone_EvilI just came across this question: What determines whether a magic item requires attunement? which reminded me of a question I answered: How can I decide if my homebrew item should require attunement? which appears to clearly be duplicates. I believe newer questions should normally be clo...

Q: How to use rules — did this change between editions and how?

enkryptorWhat are the game rules for? It seems the role of rules1 was changed throughout the history of D&D. For instance, as this answer says, there was an explicit destinction between "crunch" and "fluff" in fourth edition: a distinction between "ignorable fluff" and the "real rules" Such a se...

So somehow Roll20 got confused and thought the damage roll for Eldritch Blast (1d10+5(CHA)) was to cast Create Bonfire and it's just hilarious

10:47 PM
@Gwideon Try reading Pulitzer Prize winners. History, drama, novel, whatever. It's not like those are the only good things to read, but hoo-boy, are they (almost all of them) really good.

@Gwideon If you're bored, does the school have a gym or library you can access? Or maybe do some independent research into technical skills or other knowledge that interests you.

11:30 PM
Huh, I appear to not be able to post comments at the moment

Q: What are pitfalls I should be aware of with NPC/PC romantic relationships?

GwideonI will be running Rise of Tiamat as a sequel to a summer campaign I ran (which was not Hoard of the Dragon Queen). At the end of the campaign two of my PCs, a Bard and a critical role gunslinger, gained companions who are love interests for their respective PCs. I'm not entirely sure how comfor...

Q: Does a lich die if its phylactery is destroyed, or can it simply not rejuvenate anymore?

NathanSI'm planning a lich as a BBEG villain in an upcoming adventure. I want it to be possible for the party to find the phylactery before facing the lich, as well as discovering how to destroy it. If they manage to learn where it is and how to destroy it, and do so before facing the lich, would dest...
