12:37 AM
The chat sure is a ghost town today

12:57 AM
Weekends are quiet.

Hola @Helwar

Q: Is it frowned upon to ask for help homebrewing a class on this forum?

RoiRoiHe'sOurBoyI've been here for a little while and wanted to ask this before I went asking a question that could be less acceptable than this one. I want some help homebrewing a class for 5e, but before I do, I figured I should ask if it's acceptable to so so. Sorry for any inconvenience.

hey there @nitsua60
hey there @GettingNifty, welcome to the RPG.SE lair :)

Hi hows it going
I was just day dreaming about Hero Editor on Diablo 2. That was back in the day.
You used to be able to use them on Open Battle.net I wonder
Closed was only legit characters.
I've got like a 120 Demon Hunter or something on Diablo 3
I wonder if i could import it to pc or something

2:05 AM
hey there @ArtOfCode

Hi, @GettingNifty, I think you're looking for The Bridge, which is the main chat room for the Stack Exchange about video games, Arqade. RPG General Chat is the main chat room for Role-playing Games, which is about tabletop (aka "pen and paper") role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons.

That's not false, although we do talk about other things here
Nothing is too off topic for chat (See: birds)

2:21 AM
I used to rolelpay on msn chat before it got shut down
that was like 2000
it was aol and msn and then yahoo, now nothing

We do have a room for that although its usage is hard to predict
And some of the users here even run games for each other, which is cool

all you need for what i'm talking about is a dice bot

like this?
d20

it's usually just like roleplaying and fantasy user scripted like a book
yeah but then you have all these external clan websites that keep track of peoples stats when they want to fight eachother
and then a trainer decides what happens after the dice are rolled
it was really cool, kind of the idea of how people say a book is better than a movie because it uses your own imagination
but i think it was bad cuz you'd end up causing romance between people of varying ages and then they would find out later
because using your real information kind of made everything realistic and it was all about fantasy
then dateline made the internet look like a pedophile

2:36 AM
Well as far as I'm aware, the chat games here are good about staying clean
And if any lines do get crossed, which is rare, the mods are quick to respond to flagged messages

sometimes they even lurk around in the shadows
I mean what

I read the best story today.
A clan of tai chi ancestors had a family member who was robbed or, taken hostage somehow...

Was it a story all about how their lives got flipped turned upside down?

So he somehow contacted these youngsters, but they couldn't get a hold of the older brothers.
Kind of like an ancient hostage situation where 20 dudes are demanding money.
So it probably takes some time.
Anyways, so the 15 year olds, two of them, suggest that he should offer them alcohol.
Once he gets them drunk at his house, the two boys show up and meet another one of their family members.
Then they throw peas and put out several candles.
The older one throws the younger one in the room.
And the ones that try to escape are met by big bro.

I thought they couldn't reach the older brothers?

2:46 AM
Well they met an uncle or something i suppose on the way in.
Then you have the original Tai Chi family member who was taken hostage, another adult on the outside, and a Juvenile on the inside and outside.
Plus they're all drunk and can't see
But back then a 15 year old would be a skilled blackbelt
and the elders would be like 12th degree black belts

Ok, so how does it end?

None of the robbers make it out.
Duh.
Seriously..

yeah, when it's a story that uses "black belt" that way, the ending is pretty predictable.

well black belt doesn't necessarily mean a whole lot
but it can if you're self disciplined
It's like if you're Thomas Edison and got all credit for the incandescant bulb, vs. the guy that created the arc lamp 100 years before him and got no credit.
One's cuz it's given to you, the other's cuz you earned it.
And when people first see it they wanna burn it
cuz they're peasants

3:04 AM
I wonder if wizard schools have a ranking system analogous to colored belts in martial arts

belts are usually given by masters who are accredited legally
and you have to memorize hundreds of moves, as well as complete several feats, usually, in western martial arts, it's normally you have to stay alive for so long against multiple other higher belts

@MikeQ you'd think so? XD

@Shalvenay They have a thesis spell. So maybe they are working toward a wizard doctorate? A wizarding degree?

@MikeQ hahaha XD I suppose it'd depend on which school you went to
some wizard schools are probably quite cloistered and academic
however, if you were a Devastator in training, it'd be far more like a martial art of some sort
(referring to Hobgoblin Devastators that is :)

In many disciplines, the belt colors are just ways of showing that you've memorized a particular number of basic positions/moves; it's not a measure of skill or mastery, it's that you've proved to have memorized a certain set of features. For some disciplines a black belt can take less than a year; for others it represents more than a decade of work.
But regardless, in most cases it means you're now ready to start the advanced stuff that can't just be memorized.
The specifics, however, vary wildly not just between disciplines, but between schools.

3:15 AM
Each level incorporates instruction in four major areas: rifle &
bayonet, bladed weapons, weapons of opportunity, and unarmed
techniques.
170
The program also adds instruction on anatomy & physiology,
human factors, combat behavior, and operational risk management.
171
Furthermore, it integrates a detailed safety lecture within every period
of instruction.
172
Finally, the MCMAP conducts,
a series of presentations covering warriorship and martial
culture . . . warrior case studies—accounts of individual
that color belt, in lieu of his/her web belt with his/her camouflaged
utilities, attesting to the level of proficiency he/she achieved.
176
No program could exist without having a well-trained and competent
cadre of instructors. The MCMAP has two levels of instructors. The
first is the Green Belt Martial Arts Instructor (MAI)(MOS 8551). The
Marine must be a corporal or above and attend a three-week intensive
program learning not only the martial arts techniques themselves, but
also how to teach them.

@Shalvenay hiya

@nitsua60 how's it going?

@Shalvenay Good. Been busy. You?

@nitsua60 alright here

How's non-RPG life?

3:31 AM
@nitsua60 pretty good :)

what kind of music do you guys like
or your favorite artist
even better

@Shalvenay I'm seeing light at the end of the tunnel in terms of RL-business. We should look into what the next couple of weeks look like. In fact, I've just put some dates into the "Calendar" post in R20. If you, @KorvinStarmast, @NautArch, and @trogdor want to ping me at some point with availability I'll put it all in there and we can see if a realtime session is in the cards in the near future. (And then we can schedule the offline twosies we're due.)

@GettingNifty Do you mind typing with fewer presses of <ENTER>? You're taking up a lot of vertical space for what's barely a sentence there.

Sorry I have a display that flips horizontally for coding reasons.
I apologize.

3:42 AM
's'alright. Is coding a job or just a hobby?

Depends on whether or not you eat broccoli.

I... don't know what that means.

if you eat raw broccoli your body will shut down it's myostatin gene receptors and your body will look like this
just found out 3 hours ago

I am very confused

You are a mammal.
maybe myoplex or myo x i dunno

3:54 AM
Alright, I'm heading out. Night, all!
Play more games!

@nitsua60 Fairwell my good sheep person

4:06 AM
lol don't be so mean
Could a meme, go faster than a meme, and create a sonic meme boom

5 hours later…
8:43 AM
o/
@BESW I want there to keep being more excellent niche microgames :)

9:15 AM
hehe

9:49 AM

@BESW lol I saw that
it's great isn't it?

10:10 AM
Wedding done, so relieved to not have to bear the stress of that anymore. Also two nights in the ballroom of a 19th century mansion!
(Zero ghost encounters, but I didn't visit the attics at nighttime)

2 hours later…
12:22 PM
@BESW Luckily, my DM has a lot of spare dice
@MikeQ Also, was that back there a Fresh Prince reference? CaptAmerica.gif
(the big fuss about getting this reference is that I've never seen the original intro, just the one they translated in my language, and I'm pretty amazed at the adaptation.)

@Zachiel I used to have enough dice to fill a kitchen sink. Now they're all gone...

12:52 PM
@DavidCoffron ...because you actually filled a kitchen sink with them and they all went down the drain? :P

hey there @ACuriousMind

hiya

how're things going?

Quite well, still pretty busy but life's good :)

1:16 PM
@ACuriousMind I prefer undeath but that's just me. #lichlife

@Maximillian The Original bard in Strategic Review started at level 1. The 1e version was roughly what later became a prestige class

hey there @KorvinStarmast

1:30 PM
@DavidCoffron When the liches find a way to still enjoy the wonders of food and drink, I'll reconsider my resolution to stay alive ;)

1:44 PM
@ACuriousMind wait. Liches can't taste? I assumed they just didn't HAVE to eat

@DavidCoffron Not sure whether they have no taste, but I imagine there are...logistical problems when you do not have a working digestive tract...

@ACuriousMind just used conjured food. It'll go away on its own. (You are a powerful wizard after all)

You may be right. I'll start working on my phylactery right away

@ACurious what do you suppose the besg choic for a phylactery would be?
Best*

@DavidCoffron A random book in my library or any common implement. Given We're already thinking about food, I'd perhaps go with a simple fork

2:02 PM
But what happens when some random schmuck breaks your fork while eating a particularly tough steak?

Well, I wouldn't exactly hand it to random people to eat with, it's just sitting in my cutlery drawer. Also, what sort of steaks are you eating? :D

Is there a way to a cry for a lich's phylactery? Could I just make it a random piece of wood embedded in a tree

@ACuriousMind It's magic, I don't have to explain...!

@DavidCoffron So that some random lumberjack makes furniture out of it and you suddenly find yourself in an old lady's living room after your next regeneration?
Also, I think there are runes and stuff on the phylactery, so you need to choose an item where such things aren't entirely out of place

2:19 PM
I think runes aren't strictly necessary (at least in 4e or 5e) although the common form is indeed a box containing runed scriptures.
Actually 5e phylactery has to have interior space.

@kviiri what about a building?

2:42 PM
Well I guess technically, if you consider those objects.

@kviiri whose!? :O

@doppelgreener A childhood friend's (I was the bestman)

@kviiri awww. :D congratulations
(to your friend & to you being the best man!)

Thanks ^^ everything went quite well
I was a bit worried about the ceremonies being too formal or serious for me (the newlyweds are Laestadian, which is a conservative branch of protestant Christianity) but everyone was in for good fun
Laestadians don't drink alcohol which was good because that way they actually have to come up with weddings that one can tolerate sober.

Hahaha!
That's great. :)
What was their solution?

3:06 PM
@doppelgreener I hope it's not poisoning the guests. Kviiri? Are you still there?

hey there @Zachiel

@Shalvenay Hey

how're things going?

@doppelgreener Brewity, in large part. Also not bringing all the children (I mean, Laestadians also don't use contraception so the families tend to be large)

@Shalvenay Trying to find someone in my game that can cast a level 1 spell. Up until now, someone managed to tell me that another character can't cast it, when in reality they can.

3:20 PM
@kviiri How does brewity square with "no alcohol"? ;)
Many brews are alcoholic, after all...

@ACuriousMind Many.

@kviiri do you mean brevity or is there some cool thing called brewity?
short & sweet & no kids sounds like a great recipe :D

4:05 PM
@Shalvenay Hail, I must have been leaving as you sent the greeting. All is well, nice bit of rain this morning so I don't have to water the grass
@Zachiel Which spell?

4:20 PM
@KorvinStarmast be glad you only had a nice bit of rain. I work at a tour cavern and it had been raining for 5 days basically straight until this morning. The cave is a mess

Yoiks! (UK?)

No Virginia, USA

Cool. (Charlottesville? Tidewater area? DC area?
Latter two were my old stomping grounds .... sister is moving to C-ville ...
I remember going to Luray Caverns as a kid, and then taking my kids there years later ... out past front royal ...

4:33 PM
@KorvinStarmast well I'm working at skyline caverns (the less popular one) but Luray isn't much better off

Cool, sounds like a fun job, sorry it got rained out.

Oh were still giving tours. It is just a mess lol

heh it's a mess, covers a lot o jobs. :)
Best wishes, and keep your tourists safe. Of to prime a wall. .

5:15 PM
@doppelgreener Yes, brevity
My language only uses w for emphasis and proper nouns, I am allowed to make this mistake!
Or stylistically

I can accept that! :)

5:59 PM
@kviiri w is the best letter. If you assume all other letters are equal, then w is literally twice as good (two letters put together)

3 hours later…
8:37 PM
@DavidCoffron Some languages have those nifty single-character ligatures that have morphed into single letters, like ae or oe.

@KorvinStarmast Friendly Face, from Races of Destiny

Swedish (and Finnish, although again it's only used in proper nouns and loanwords) has å/Å which originally replaced "aa" which was pronounced as "o". It's essentially o that's always pronounced as an o and not u like Swedish o so often is :)

my head is beginning to spin a bit at that explanation XD

In 5e, there are temporary effects that raise ability scores right?

@Rubiksmoose Enhance Ability

8:48 PM
Amongst Chamoru linguists there's a controversy over the evolving orthography of ch.

9:05 PM
@Rubiksmoose Ioun Stones
@Shalvenay Enhance ability doesn't actually raise the scores, just gives advantage on checks

@DavidCoffron oh, :P

Thanks :)
Just a sanity check
I already voted to close for another reason so I cannot VtC again.

9:19 PM
You could retract and re'VtC but I got you @Rubiksmoose

@DavidCoffron I believe if you retract you cannot vote again.

@Rubiksmoose could've sworn I've done it b4 but nvm

@DavidCoffron Yeah I'm not sure I think very recently Naut and I were unable to vote again once retracted. But I could be misremembering.

/me shrugs

yeah nbd. Thanks for the vote.
It is impressive how much work that one sentence question took to be understandable/clear only for it to turn out to be a dupe. Sigh.

9:30 PM
One of the excellent tertiary benefits of Stack Exchange participation can be improved communication and comprehension skills!
Writing a good Stack post requires stepping outside one's own perspective and seeing where assumptions and understandings won't be shared, so need to be made explicit.
And helping to improve another's post requires learning how to ask good leading questions that elicit explanation rather than just "yes" or "no" responses.

@BESW I never considered myself to have an issue with this, but I have found my question asking and answering skills to be considerably improved even in unrelated areas like work. It helps a lot to have the stack teach a focus on really expressing the core of what your issue is and what kind of response you would like from people.

Very much so.

10:17 PM
@Rubiksmoose MY RANDOM RANT T_T

@DavidCoffron Likely possible if the post's been edited between retraction and new vote.

10:31 PM
hello

hey there @heather, welcome to the RPG.SE lair :)

first time in here =)
i'm interested in starting learning about role-playing games, esp. d&d; if I don't really want to spend (a ton of) money, where do I start/what are the essentials?

do you have a group that you want to play with or run the game for already, or are you looking for someone to show you the ropes as well?

@heather D&D is the best-known tabletop RPG, but it's also one of the more complex and expensive. There are a lot of excellent games which are much cheaper, right down to free, and require a lot less study and prep before you can start playing.

@heather Depends, are you fixated on D&D or open to other systems? Plenty of systems out there that don't require anyone to buy something (except dice maybe :P), but D&D's not one of them.

10:35 PM
@Shalvenay no group to play with.
@ACuriousMind i am not fixated on d&d; i just know that's one of the better known ones.

Are you looking to join an existing group, or to start one with your friends?

either, i suppose.

It may be well-known, but I've never played a single session of it and I've been playing for years ;)

(Personally I find it's better to play with friends.)

i have someone i could probably play with.

10:37 PM
hey as well @ACuriousMind
@heather do you know anything about their tastes in stories/media, or do you have any strong preferences yourself? (that might help guide us in selecting a suitable system to start you off with)

I recommend Fate. It's free online and as downloadable PDFs, it's very flexible, there's a lot of free pre-made settings/adventures to begin with but you can also make your own worlds and stories easily. There are special dice, but you can use six-sided dice like come with most board games instead.

@Shalvenay i really enjoy the lord of the rings and would probably prefer a fantasy type setting, though I don't mind futuristic settings; I do like Star Wars and the writings of Asimov and so forth.

Fate's also one of the (relatively few) games that works well with just two people in the group; a lot of games (like D&D) assume a larger group and require fiddling to make it work with just two.

it says three to five people are necessary though...is that just the preferred number?

Aye.
I've played it from two people up to seven or eight.

10:41 PM
okay, cool.
thanks for the recommendation - I'll check it out =)

You might try starting with Fate Accelerated; it's the grab-and-go version, quick and simple.

okay.

You should be mindful that a two people group will be a very different experience from the "standard" one, though - a lot more focus on the individual players, and a lot less social shenanigans

I've had issues with this before, but I figured I'd finally ask. Should I be linking to the Adventurer's League documents (the most recent versions are behind a 0.00 paywall and inside of a p\ack of similar documents). This answer is one example

yeah, Fate's good, but you'll probably want to gain some experience in a more "traditional" system as well, so you can decide which play paradigm you favor

10:42 PM
Fate Core is the same basic game but with more fiddly bits and a lot of discussion about the philosophy and reasoning behind the design, to give you confidence to modify the game how you like.

@HellSaint hahaha sorry. I figured that some might not take not be super enthused with it and I don't think it did your answer any favors honestly. Feel free to reinstate if it is something you really wanted in there though.
@DavidCoffron I believe those are the only up-to-date docs available :-/ I really hate how WotC has decided to distribute those.

@heather There's also a bunch of Fate Worlds that have been made, which are games running on Fate Core or Accelerated alongside a defined world and with mechanical modifications to Fate to help you play in that world. A couple of those are my favorite Fate games, like Masters of Umdaar which I find is also relatable to anyone coming from a D&D background.

At least from the standpoint of having to link to them.

@Rubiksmoose Yeah... That's is extremely frustrating. I dislike DMSGuild in general but it is essential for AL play so..... I guess I'll tolerate it

as Fate's design philosophy centers around narrative-building and narrative management, which is quite different from systems like D&D where the mechanics are centered on adjudication of actions and scenes and don't step back much to frame the narrative

10:45 PM
@doppelgreener okay, thanks! I'll look into those.

it's not like it's just one or the other though

(if at all, really)

there's loads of RPGs, and it's not a matter of picking traditional vs not
like the tons of delightful microgames out there

@doppelgreener Can I make a micro-micro game that is just "1d4 things of your choice happen" "continue around the circle"

@HellSaint I liked your answer a lot btw.

10:48 PM
@DavidCoffron probably

Ooh. That looks like fun.

@DavidCoffron I'm pretty sure that's how Cthulhu works in Call of Cthulhu, it's just that all he wants to have happen is killing investigators.

@doppelgreener What is this: "[0-9]+[0-9,\.]*|[&0-9a-zA-Z\xC0-\xFF]+[-']?[0-9a-zA-Z\xC0-\xFF]*" lol

@DavidCoffron black magic and sorcery. a regex.

@doppelgreener I'm trying to analyz (and I have a small background in Theoretical Math and Coding). Still having a bit of trouble, lol. But I think I figured out most of it

10:58 PM
this site breaks it down on the right hand side

Thanks. I got about 1/3 of it right lol

i still don't comprehend it
i'm just going with their plaintext description for a word

Mostly I couldn't figure out what the astericks meant (any quantity between 0 and infinity)
It's like a for loop until the end of the string (kind of)

wait, where did that regex come from?

It sprang fully-formed from the brow of Zeus?

11:02 PM
It's a "what is a word" figure for the 200 word rpg challenge

@Rubiksmoose Nah I posted it wondering how much time it would take to someone edit it out hahaha
sorry for the bad joke :P

@DavidCoffron Ahhh

@Rubiksmoose thanks. I still wanted to make the plots for Lucky feat and race feature but no time right now.

Is there a rule in the 200-words that I can't just make ASCII art of all the letter and make a 10,000 word one? (not that I would, but they don't count as words)

I might do it for the Halfling though since Dale didn't and it's alot easier to do it in MATLAB than the dice simulator I forgot the name.

11:04 PM
@BESW I don't think Athena was a regex

anydice^^

After all, she didn't really match with anyone :P

@DavidCoffron When I submitted last year the form was a plain-text entry box with a character limit.

@BESW oh...

Work within the creative constraints, not against them.

11:06 PM
@BESW of course, I plan to. I was just thought-experimenting
Besides I think I can get a suitably "comprehensive" High Fantasy game into 200 words.
Maybe
Ok, maybe not, but at least something fun

I've got several ideas that might fit into 200 words, but I haven't had the mental energy to actually make that happen.
(Writing a great 200-word RPG means, for me, writing at least 4000 words of a good RPG first and then ripping out everything that isn't absolutely necessary until there's no Ruth at all.)

We should have a RPG.SE submission for the challenge (maybe a chat event or something). That would be awesome.

At least a half-dozen RPG.SE users submitted to it last year and the year before.
I submitted two entries both years.

@BESW I just think it would be fun to see what the combined efforts of a bunch could come up with (though it might just be too many cooks)

You mean a group collaborating on a single submission?

11:15 PM
@BESW Yeah. Assuming that's allowed

I think we'd want to check with the contest organizers.

Even if it wasn't for Prizes opportunity, it would be interesting to see if they would post it somewhere. Or maybe even start a groups competition in the future.
Maybe next year we could mention something...

Q: Rogue Sneak Attack Macro Help roll20

madrobbsIm trying to automate my sneak attack with my weapons. Currently I have the following &{template:default} {{attack= dexterity_mod}+@{Shadow|pb} }} {{damage= dexterity_mod} +?{Sneak Attack?:|Yes,@{Shadow|SA}|No,0}| + [[1d8+@{Shadow|SA} i...

Isn't it just [1d20cs>20]* (that just seemed to easy a solution since it is in the macro guide...)

That makes the roll green, right? But they're talking about the extra damage on crit.
I mostly only know the D&D 4e template macros right now. In that I'd use:

Oh, true. What game is he playing though.
One sec

{{critical=[[ 0*0 [dice max] + weapon-1-num-dice})*@{pselected|weapon-1-dice} [weapon dice max] + weapon-1-damage} [damage modifier] + weapon-1-enh}dweapon-1-per-plus} [magic per plus dice] ]] damage}}
But it's got built into its variables already, I dunno if the default template has that.

11:24 PM
I work in the way-too-limited 5e template so I'm not quite sure either

I just started poking the default template for use with Fate last week, but documentation is confusing.

I still don't know why they use this garbage syntax when there are many simple programming languages that would work SO much better

11:46 PM
@BESW "Any “ASCII Art” that displays as a word will be counted by the judges, even if it doesn’t show up in the counter below." Found this lol

Yeah, thought so; they're using 5e and I don't know that at all.
