4:01 PM
No, because there is no mechanic for donating xp. There is for inspiration. It's just loosening the requirement.

I feel, respectfully, that that is an inconsistent position

@Adam I'm not sure I agree. Inspiration and xp are not equals.
Earning X is equal. But there is nothing to allow you to give xp to another player. There is a way to give inspiration.
But I also think my ruling isn't consistent with the rules. It's a houserule.

I would hope you wouldn't agree, it's your position! In spirit both are ways to reward people for engaging in the story in a meaningful way. However in one circumstance you allow somebody to give that reward to somebody else even though that other person didn't do anything to deserve it, and in other circumstance you don't.

@NautArch, there's nothing to do to make it less opinion-based. As far as being a 5e answer, it -is- a 5e answer, as much as it could possibly be made one.

4:21 PM
@godskook It's as much a 5e answer as me going into a pathfinder question an answering it based on my experience with 5e would be a pathfinder answer. We definitely appreciate wanting to help answer a question, but you need experience with the system to give the kind of expert answer that the stack cultivates.

@Adam, based on the other answers present, this question seems exceedingly system-agnostic in its required primary expertise.

@godskook I disagree. the question isn't about "should I let players swap roleplaying rewards around" The question is about a very specific mechanic, defined by a particular game system, and to what extent the rules define how it can be used.

Given how pre-familiar the questioner is with the RAW, I really don't think this is a RAW question.

Ooo boy, bonus types.
That reminds me of the time I found out, for Pathfinder, that Warforged characters can't use the vanilla Barbarian's rage feature but they could use the Unchained Barbarian's rage.

And based on the number of answers dissecting quotes from the text, I disagree.

4:38 PM
In general, being familiar with the game being asked about is appreciated by the community. Many issues are affected by a game's philosophies and the attitudes instilled in its playing community, if not by the mechanics themselves. This means even if an issue is not particularly steeped in that game's issues, it often (perhaps ironically) takes expertise in that game to know to what degree that is the case.
Lack of familiarity with the material thus undermines a reader's ability to have confidence in an answer's capacity to be useful, meaning it's more prone to be received poorly, no matter how technically correct it is.

As I enter RPG General Chat, I check the entry link for traps.

@Yuuki, why can't they?

@godskook IIRC, the vanilla Barbarian's rage was described as a morale bonus.
And the Warforged race (or at least those with the Cold Logic or whatever it was called trait) could not benefit from morale bonuses.
Whereas the Unchained Barbarian's rage was an untyped bonus.

Uh, that's new to PF Warforged, isn't it?
I don't remember Warforged being immune to morale bonuses.

Ah, the Constructed trait.
> For the purposes of effects targeting creatures by type (such as a ranger’s favored enemy and bane weapons), androids count as both humanoids and constructs. Androids gain a +4 racial bonus on all saving throws against mind-affecting effects, paralysis, poison, and stun effects, are not subject to fatigue or exhaustion, and are immune to disease and sleep effects. Androids can never gain morale bonuses, and are immune to fear effects and all emotion-based effects.
Oh whoops, Android race not Warforged.

4:49 PM
Warforged is a WOTC term Putting WOTC in Paizo products is like crossing the proton pack streams. A very bad thing!

But yeah, you couldn't have a vanilla Android Barbarian. Or rather, you could but they wouldn't able to do the thing Barbarians are known for and what you would use to identify a Barbarian.
Or you could rage but you wouldn't get the stat bonuses!

Wait, is the Android running Cupcake or Kitkat? That could make a difference.
You would not like me when I am angry.
click
Android eyes are now red.
This is the limit of the changes.

But yeah, before the Pathfinder campaign I was playing in could still fit in my schedule, I had planned on playing an Android Barbarian.
Less rage and more "Bastion when he hears a woodpecker".
But then I found out it couldn't be possible with vanilla and I was sad.
But then I saw Unchained and became happy again.

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Bad keyword in answer, bad keyword with email in answer, email in answer: Our DM keeps interrupting our long rests by juliet bantty on rpg.SE

Is "Android" PF for Cool? (Cool = Warforged, apparently)

4:58 PM
@SmokeDetector Posted at 16:55:40Z, deleted at 16:56:16Z -- 36 seconds later.
Awesome.

A smoke detector? Neat.

@MadMAxJr Yeah! We enabled it in the room a few weeks ago.

Don't even have to change the batteries.

@MadMAxJr We pay contractors $200/wk to do that.

Oh, so it's a US Government smoke detector.

5:03 PM
@adam sorry for my delay. No, I would not allow XP transference. More because there is no mechanic for that.

Yes. There's additional maintenance charges because there may or may not be a camera and other recording devices in there. We aren't allowed to legally know or disclose for sure.

5:15 PM
@doppelgreener I'll just ask Moltar up in the booth what all is in here.

5:35 PM
Did we ever get the 2nd mod slot added to the election?

I believe Mxy said we did

votin' ain't easy.
well, the actual process is easy. the decision is not.

@JoshuaAslanSmith Yes we did

its slightly easier if you are a candidate yourself

5:52 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith vote early, vote often!

It's good to see voters showing up suddenly. Yesterday we had fewer ballots than last election (last time we had “1,809 voters were eligible, 723 visited the site during the election, 446 visited the election page, and 324 voted”). Today though the numbers are almost starting to cross the line into more than last election: “3,005 voters were eligible, 706 visited the site during the election, 748 visited the election page, and 313 voted”.

Service guarantees citizenship!
Oh. Wait. Wrong government.

@MadMAxJr I'm doing my part!

The 748 visited / 313 voted numbers are odd though. Visitors are way up since last time, but actual voting is the same.

The 'We Be Goblins' chain of adventures Paizo put out for free some time back has been a hit with my group....
Second adventure.. the four goblin heroes find their clan annihilated by adventurers.... so they go to the next clan over. They have no chief. They're immediately suckered into a series of trials to become their chief.
Test 1: Everybody gets 3 arrows and a bow. Seagulls will be released from cages in 3 waves. Most birds shot down wins. Results: 4 observer goblins shot (partial credit due to laughing), 2 seagulls, 1 tin can, and a tree.
Test 2. A bunch of plankboards are laid over a swamp with posts. 12 posts have Stirges tied to them on a 5ft tether.. And you have to wear HUMAN BOOTS. A test of agility, balance, and melee finesse.
Goblins line up on the starting line, except one. He adjusts his boots, does some knee crunches.
thunder stone goes off, 3 goblins run. The last one rumages around in his possessions.
The rogue gets a quick sneak attack skill due to high initiatve....

6:04 PM
rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/99144/… Mod support needed to help educate/direct?

Then the calm goblin pulls a wand of fireballs, nukes the test field, scores the rest of the kills in one go. Swamp remains on fire.

6:15 PM
@NautArch Looks like it's getting handled already!

@NautArch So many punctuation errors on that Opportunity Attack question, I too can hardly tell what's going on

@Adam i'm pretty sure the answer is you have 1 reaction to give. If you use it on one OA, then you're done until the start of your next turn. But I can't be sure unless they clarify what's going on.

Agreed. though I'm a little concerned that they won't return to the question since they have something to run with in the comments. We'll find out eventually

@Adam ack. sorry. I'm guessing I shouldn't do that?

I mean, you're not trying to get around a hold or anything. It was just a slip of the keys as it were. But the answer is in the comments now, so if they only care about the first thing that they see, they might just take that answer and run with it.

6:21 PM
@Adam They seem engaged, and once they clean it up, i'll write a true answer (if someone doesn't beat me to it)

Phew. Glad to see they came back to it :D

@NautArch Yeah, we try to avoid that. It feels helpful, but the end result is that it results in a more questions that don't get fixed and get auto-deleted, which is way less helpful in the long run.
(If the Q gets split and cleaned up and it's taking more than a few minutes to reopen it, feel free to ping me here and I'll jump on it. I'm just not watching that post right now.)

@SevenSidedDie lesson learned - thank you! It did seem right, then was like uh-oh
hmm, question deleted :(

6:36 PM
Rip. Maybe Yak will post them both as two new questions instead of creating one new one and editing the original one

Inspiration question is amusing. Two polar opposite answer are equal, the answer that straddles the fence is the median.

I really don't think miniman's answer is a "polar opposite" as it has been made out to be
I think it just says "If your group thinks that it would be 'fun and interesting' to let you give up your advantage in this circumstance, then do it."
But he himself wouldn't consider that circumstance fun or interesting in his own game

He leaves the door open, but his raw seems no. And streich seems more rai/table ruling.

I think his raw is: Whatever you call fun and interesting
not "No"
Streich is more "unequivocally yes"
And yours is "probably no, but do it because it's nice to be nice"
That's how I would describe them anyway

heh, I still see Miniman's as "No, but if you want to interpret it so it can, that's fine"
Mine and miniman's i think are similar. but clearly not

6:45 PM
And I see it as, "the raw supports whatever you want it to" because fun is subjective
5e is practically built on being subjective

yeah, for better and for worse

@Yuuki I do award it all to the party, to be split evenly.

@nitsua60 so do you ever award an individual player extra XP for doing something really amazing?
@Adam that's definitely my answer. And why it's not highly voted on. Also - can I steal your interpretation for a bolded answer to start mine?

@NautArch I award extra XP for blatant acts of bribery.
Not really, but don't tell my players that.

@NautArch Sure! Take my words away, I don't want them

6:52 PM
@Dan B Not sure if you are up on chat, but the Mordant's Need (two books) by Stephen R. Donaldson is a good fictional treatment of the teleport/ambush trick, and its lethality.

@KorvinStarmast howdy!

@KorvinStarmast He's most probably not up on chat, or you would have got the autocomplete for the name and it would most probably have been spelt as the system expects, which is @DanB
(I.e. with no spaces.)

@NautArch I don't, but I can't really articulate a reason why. I guess I just worry about XP-grubbing...?
I do run side-sessions whenever subsets of a table want that sort of thing, but they've got to be open to everyone's participation if desired.
@JoshuaAslanSmith yes, 10% easier =)

7:08 PM
@Adam dang. I think that question won't return. Have a nicely typed answer all ready, too.

D:
But my rep dispensing mouse was all ready!

@nitsua60 I think I'm weird in that it's not the XP that matters to me, it's levelling, feeling like my character is improving, and seeing the story progress. The XP is the product of those things, but it's not what's important ot me. However, if I don't feel like I'm moving forward and there's no XP to fall ack on, that'd suck.

@NautArch I play one game that uses xp and one that doesn't. I really dislike how I don't know how close we are to leveling in the milestone game.
We'll kill some big mini-boss.
-"Did we level yet?"
-"No."

@Adam Yeah, i could definitely see that. After only playing for a couple years, it does seem like you should level about 4-5 sessions.
so as long as that remains the general rule, I think it's an easy expectation to set and plan for.

@NautArch Hi, having read Mordant's Need over 20 years ago, I recall the teleport/ambush attacks described in that book and have remembered them since. Donaldson is a very good writer, though his books are awful 'introspective' in tone. I only read the first Thomas Covenant trilogy.
And was grateful that mordant's Need was only two books. Kept it from dragging.

7:21 PM
anyone tried ME4?

@claudiuf I've never played any of the ME games :(

@NautArch It's back!

@Adam ooooooooooo
grumblegrumble
should we give him some upvotes so he can join chat?

Much to my son's frustration, I never finished ME 1 since I got impatient with the user interface. No, I have never liked the FPS view; too many flashbacks to bad flight simulators back in the 80's, and headaches therefrom.
So, like Naut, I am not among the ME cogniscienti

@claudiuf I can't tell if that's a custom Ryder or somewhat canonical female Shepherd.

7:29 PM
@KorvinStarmast but me cognoscienti

Argghh, I spelled it wrongly again. Grrrr.

[is seen in the distant backgroung, raging and kicking a spell list]

@claudiuf Montreal should've definitely helped out Edmonton a bit more.

Agree

7:35 PM
@NautArch I'm not sure. Maybe the comments can be cleaned up a bit so we can still use that section? His last comment kind of confirmed my fears :(

@Adam Yeah, I think I figured out his question (and I didn't answer it!). We'll see. As for his first, I'm not sure if it's a "read the book to me" question or if it'd be good to have up here. I think it's the latter and would be helpful and a rep generator for him to get into chat.

@NautArch You referring to an SE question or a reddit question?

@NautArch Not touching it until he edits it again. needs to be cleaned up.

@KorvinStarmast yup. I think i figured it out, but we'll see what it ends up as.
and if it is what i think it is, then it's pretty simple.
i'd like him to post the OA/reactions question, though. There isn't anything on that right now here that I found.

7:51 PM
You could ask for him. I'll up vote it as we seem to lack a Q.

@KorvinStarmast I will, but want to give him a chance.

@NautArch Sure. "Don't Rush" is a good idea in most cases.

After today's posts about teleportation, I want to write up a retired Wizard who has founded a shipping company via Teleportation Circles. I'll name him Fehd Ecks.
2

@SevenSidedDie ok - it's revised. It's more of a 'read the book to me' question than the OA was, but it can be reopened/answered now.

8:13 PM
wut. two questions now on pretty much the same thing. weird.

@Shalvenay I might not be able to run the module tonight, I may have been conscripted to provide math instruction and tutoring.

@NautArch I don't know if you want to include them in your answer but there are some UA articles that have things that give additional OAs under certain circumstances (I know of the tunnel Fighter fighting style, and I think one of the fighter archetypes from their UA had some)

@diego Nah - UA isn't final so I don't want to include it. If there's a legit published example, I can.
and i don't think there is...because that's just plain broken :P

@NautArch I can't think of anything, and yeah I think Tunnel Fighter is considered pretty broken (especially with the Sentinel and Polearm Master feats)

8:21 PM
18th level knight
in terms of UA
in terms of printed material, there is nothing

@Adam and for good reason. action economy is a thing, wizards!

Tunnel Fighter gives most of that ability at level 1 or 2 (depending on when you get your fighting style) media.wizards.com/2015/downloads/dnd/…

Yeah, tunnel fighter is even better because it lets you take an OA as many times as you want, but the knight is still only 1 per turn at best

Tunnel Fighter is a bit ridiculous. I think I would homebrew it to "if your OA is (un)successful, it doesn't cost your reaction".

@NautArch At level 18 I don't think it is as broken since by that time many creatures have some ranged options or reach so it is easier to avoid triggering the attack. Mind you it is still good (especially in enclosed spaces), but I don't think it is broken

8:26 PM
@diego yeah, level 18 is whole other thing. At that point, you're nearly unstoppable anyway. Bute ven then, it's limited whereas TF isn't.

At level 18 a wizard has already nuked everyone you were planning on opportunity attacking anyway with just a thought.
there's some buzz going around that one of the next source books that wizards is releasing is a playtested and official release of the UA content

@Adam I wouldn't be surprised if they has some sort of 'Player's Options' book soon. We've had a few things from UA in the SCAG, but nothing since then

8:44 PM
possible dupe, would appreciate other eyes: rpg.stackexchange.com/q/99146/23970

@nitsua60 no, this is about multiple creatures going through a doorway. Not about surrounding a single PC.

Surround your PCs with doors and then...
I remember an AD&D 2e character, 1/2 giant, who fought using doors as a weapon. I do not recall how he pulled that one over on the GM.

if anything, this question is nearly a dupe: rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/99148/…
but probably not. same answer, different question. but related

9:02 PM
@CM_Dayton Heh, although I'm not sure how holding a door turns you into a doorway...

@NautArch When you can wield a door, you become a way for all of your enemies to go through doors.
Therefore, you have become a doorway.

@Yuuki yeah......no. If you just hold the door for them to walk past...maybe.

@SmokeDetector Well, the fact that this person had the insight to post this on RPG.SE (as opposed to Gardening.SE or something) shows at least some marginal research effort.

I feel like it might just be closed as a dupe of rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/4457/…
After cleaning the profanity, anyway

9:24 PM
Well that was exciting. Yeah, going to leave it up after cleaning. It's potentially a good pointer to some of our canonical questions about what the heck D&D/RPGs are. (Also worst case might help smoke out a troll, best case they just have an unfortunate idea of what makes a good first impression.)

Was it really just a guy who didn't know any better, or was it a dude intentionally trying to cause trouble?

We don't know, but the response is the same.

9:39 PM
Coveting a copy of the Dresden Files Coop Card Game? You can win one! http://www.evilhat.com/home/the-dresden-files-cooperative-card-game-giveaway/

A question about what is D&D by someone who says he has absolutely no clue... on the correct SE. I fail to recognize how this could be in good faith.

I can't believe it took me this long to realize that Majora's Mask is a game about how to prevent a literal "Rocks Fall, Everyone Dies".

Yes, but I also fail to see how cursing at the stack does anything, even if they were trying to troll us

I kinda wanna set up a time-traveling campaign like that now.
But time travel is almost definitely a headache that I don't want to deal with.

@Yuuki Too bad Harry Potter didn't take that stance

9:45 PM
@Adam To be fair, it was only a thing in the third book. Most of trouble of Time Turners comes from the fact that they don't ever use them again.
Which is less a problem with time travel mechanics and more of a problem of "if you have time travel, why not use it when the world is going to pot?".
Not necessarily the same grade of headache.

@Yuuki I meant for The Cursed Child
The plot revolves around time travel and does it horribly

@Adam I have no idea what you're talking about. That title sounds as silly as "Scrubs, Season 9" or more seasons of Heroes.

It's a play that was written as kind of like "Harry Potter: The Next Generation"
And it was written horribly and stumbles into every time travel plot that it can

(I know, the references to Scrubs S9 and other seasons of Heroes were supposed invoke fandom discontinuity)

Had you said Rocky 5, I might have connected the dots :p

9:49 PM
What dots? I don't see any dots.
That dot labeled "Moffat as showrunner"? 'Tis a silly place, it probably doesn't exist.
I don't even know they would make that work.

@Yuuki You might enjoy the TARDIS chat.

 Time and Relative Dimensions in Spoilers

Ooh, you've redecorated. I don't like it.

I need to watch the new season.
I love Capaldi but I really dislike Moffat's showrunning.
I can't really pin it down because the episodes I like the most were his writing, but his showrunning has not been impressing me at all.

@NautArch I'm failing to see the difference: [move, attack, move out of the way all on one turn] is the fundamental mechanic for both questions...?
Though you're right--that second one you found is a more-natural target.

10:07 PM
hey there @Yuuki and @nitsua60

Hi.

how're things going?

Pretty good although I may not be available for the module later tonight.

awww, what's wrong?

@Shalvenay hiya

10:11 PM
Out of curiosity, is there any provision for just deleting flat out trolling questions? Or do they just get closed and eventually lost to the ether?

(brb)

@Shalvenay Heyas!

@Karelzarath a couple of spam or offensive flags will cause autodeletion, IIRC.

hey there @Karelzarath what's up?
@nitsua60 what's up?

@Shalvenay Still at the office another hour or so =\

10:12 PM
@Shalvenay I may be conscripted for mathematics instruction/tutoring as soon as I get home.

Still at the office another 3 hours or so.

@Yuuki ah. we'll see what happens then I suppose?
@nitsua60 ah.

Just under one day left to vote in RPGSE's moderator election!

Ooo, I should bring this up to my DM since I'm using the Arcane Archer.
You get magical arrows at will and Arcane Shots are still 2/rest but they improve in effectiveness when you hit 18th level.
By "magical arrows at will", I mean that you can convert nonmagical arrows to +1 magical arrows when you fire them but they turn back to nonmagical after hitting or missing the target.

Or possibly, your arrows become +1 when shooting at people named William.
It's like favored enemy, but meaner.

Although they removed 2d6 force damage from Arcane Shot.
And it seems that they removed some ambiguity from Bursting Arrow.
So I might replace that one.

11:14 PM
hey again @Yuuki

Hello.
I'm heading home now, so we'll see whether I'll be an impromptu math(s) professor or not.

Ben
Morning all

@Ben Evening =)

Ben
So, I have a situation to put to the group.
We ended our last session in a bit of a pickle, and I need to generate some ideas on how to handle it. Fortunately, the situation is very simple, but the timing is a little immediate.

(that was getting annoying)

@nitsua60 what was?

11:32 PM
@trogdor I threw a "go on" gif up there ^^

Ben
@trogdor Exactly

@nitsua60 ah

hey there @Ben

Ben
Anyway, (I'll draw a diagram for this) the situation is that we are stuck in a canyon, backed up against a river. We can't get across, and we have an army blocking our escape. We can't climb out, because we have caravans.
What we need to do is find some way to thin the herd before they attack, so we have some way of managing them in combat. Either by creating some kind of chokepoint, or by reducing their numbers

System/setting?
(Please say Blood on the Trail.)

Ben
11:38 PM
@BESW Unfortuantely no. Numenera

@nitsua60 Ooh, good info. Thanks!

@Ben what kind of river is it?

@Ben what're your resources?

What kind of resources are at your disposal? Explosives, druids, dire badgers?

If only we had a wheelbarrow...?

Ben
11:40 PM
@Shalvenay A big one. We can swim across ok, but we can't leave the caravans, which need work (several hours worth) to get across

also, what is the surrounding climate like? I'd expect the canyon you're in to be an intermittent stream given the topography so far
@Ben wide and shallow or wide and deep?

I have a holocaust cloak.

Ben
@nitsua60 We have 2 Fighters, A Ranger, A Barbarian, a Sorcerer, and a Gary.

Use Gary's mod and kill them with physics.

Ben
@BESW Nothing of the sort really, some digging equipment, but like I said, the situation is pretty imminent

11:42 PM
Summon spells?

Ben
@Shalvenay Can I ask why?
@BESW None of that unfortunately

@Ben that majorly affects the river behavior

What do you have for battlefield control? Wall spells, the ability to collapse part of the canyon to funnel them, etc?

Ben
@Shalvenay Like I said, we can swim across fine. It's not torrential or anything, but if we cross, that means we leave the caravans, and we just can't do that
@Karelzarath Digging tools.

@Ben what do the caravans consist of?

11:45 PM
Clearly, you must hearken back to your yesteryears of playing Oregon Trail, caulk the wagons, and ford the river.

@Ben Can you construct a rudamentary lathe?

Ben
@Shalvenay We're on an archeological expedition, so primarily survelliance equipment, and digging stuff

@Ben ah, I meant what vehicles

@Yuuki except he died like, three states ago, of dysentery.

@nitsua60 That's what Raise Dead is for.

Ben
11:46 PM
@Shalvenay Oh. Caravans. Like Carts.

Although if one had a 5000 gp diamond, I imagine one would be rich enough to not have to venture to the Western frontier.

Ben
And 2 6-legged cows

btw did you get roped into being a math prof @Yuuki?

Ben
We do have a laser beam though... I'm not sure how good it is at cutting rock though

@Ben ah. yeah, river depth is a big deal then -- fording something like the Platte (too thick to drink, too thin to plow) is way different than say the Missouri

11:49 PM
@Shalvenay Apparently we will find out after dinner. :|

@Yuuki oh. when would that be?

My family loves putting me in limbo like this with no regards to my own plans.
@Shalvenay Anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour.

Ben
@Shalvenay Additionally, there is a giant chain running through the water, at up to 80 kph (~40mph)

@Yuuki sounds a lot like my family too honestly, though they have stopped doing it quite so much now

@Ben you need a pretty hefty laser for rock-breaking (tens of kW)
@Ben parallel to or perpendicular to river flow?

Ben
11:50 PM
So basically, using the river in any way is off the table at this point.
@Shalvenay It's in the river. Running at the bottom, parallel to the flow of the river. If anything, I'd say it's what's giving the river its current

I'd probably get the ranger to make a survival check to declare something about the canyon's structural stability, have the barbarian and fighters do strong-man stuff to mess with a weak spot, and then ask the sorcerer to do a long-range pew to set off a rockslide on top of the army when they arrive.

and yeah -- even though you have digging equipment, it sounds like it's all manual stuff.

Ben
@BESW I'd say that's roughly our only option.
