12:43 AM
hey there @Ben

Ben
Hey hey, was just about to ping you haha

@Ben will you be available for tonight?

Ben
I am... and by "tonight" you mean...?

[wave]

Ben
[continues the wave]

12:47 AM
@Ben ah, over the next several hours

Ben
Yeah. That's cool :)
@Shalv level 5 you said?

@Ben yup
hey there @ThomasWard

Ben
Awesome. Well I'm ready when you are :)

1:04 AM
I was pinged. And only just noticed it. :P
hiya, @Shalvenay.
goes back to mod duties on Ask Ubuntu

@ThomasWard how're things going?

they're bleh
the FCC wants all my money.
so things've been better :P

@ThomasWard Friendly Candy Company? :P

lol I wish.
Federal Communications Commission
radio licensing costs for my company's radios.

ah :P
I'm hoping to run some D&D 5e tonight and looking for a 3rd player

1:14 AM
now if I'm lucky, we'll be able to get me the radio frequencies this time, and that'll be good for the next 10 years lol, but if not, well... blah.

@kviiri I feel like this describes every edition of D&D past 0.

hey there @nitsua60

@Shalvenay hiya

@nitsua60 how're things going?

Good--intermission of girls' dance recital. It's pretty adorable.

Ben
1:28 AM
@nitsua60 Funny you should mention that, I went for a swim with my daughter this morning, and on the way home there was a parade of 5-8 year olds all heading toward the perfoming centre, all dressed up in tuts and makeup haha

2 hours later…
3:10 AM
hey there @Ryan

hi @Shalvenay - happy friday!

how're things going?

great!
you?

OK here

Ben
So @Shalvenay any progress on what's happening?

3:23 AM
@Ben sadly, Papayaman is MIA

I'm really glad I got Xanathar's Guide. Glancing through it right now - the DM tools look great

Ben
@Shalvenay Ah ok

which is most unfortunate, since between you, him and pulling Ryan in, we probably could run tonight
btw @Ryan how far are you into your current campaign, level-wise?

I'm in one 5e game currently and just jumped from level 2 to level 4. Curse of Strahd and guess finding each part of the tarot cards gives you however much XP you need to hit the next level

@Ryan ah
have you gotten to L5 on a past character?

3:26 AM
ME: Before you pass judgement, I request trial by wombat. YOU: I think you mean 'trial by--' ME: *throws marsupial at your face*

@Shalvenay Barely. Did a Dwarf Paladin to level 4 and then had to switch groups and the DM of new group told me to level him up to 7 to be closer to the rest of the table. I did but didn't enjoy it. Felt lost

@Ryan ah.
a big level leap like that can do that to you

Ben
You can boost up your level 4 PC by one?

oh this Catnap spell sounds pretty amazing
>You make a calming gesture, and up to three willing creatures of your choice that you can see within range fall unconscious for the spell’s duration. The spell ends on a target early if it takes damage or someone uses an action to shake or slap it awake. If a target remains unconscious for the full duration, that target gains the benefit of a short rest, and it can’t be affected by this spell again until it finishes a long rest.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, you can target one additional willing creature for each slot level above 3rd.

Want to cut down on referencing monster stats as you play? Use half a monster's CR as its bonus for all checks and saves. If the monster has legendary actions or is notably powerful in your campaign, also add its proficiency bonus.

4:04 AM
@Ryan I rescind my previous astonishment at their inclusion of three pages (three pages!) on beast forms. That's a useful set of tables. [cough] that should have been released years ago as a .pdf anyone can print and tuck in the endleaf of their PHB/MM [/cough] (cc:@Miniman)
I could also possibly get behind playing a Bard of Swords. Maaaayyyyybe.

Not to be confused with a Sward of Boards.

I do want to see an all-rogue party, including a Mastermind, in play at some point. [5e]
Horizon Walker (Ranger) 3 multiclassed with rogue could be a nice synergy.

4:23 AM
@nitsua60 I can't tell if this is sarcasm or not

No, I think the tables are useful and worth devoting a few pages to.
I just don't think that they're worth charging anyone for--a year into 5e they could have released this just as a "play aid." Make it PWYW with a suggestion of $1 with proceeds going to charity, if you like.
(Of course, a year into 5e they were busy spinning up DM's Guild.)

i mean compared to most things D&D isn't exactly a cash cow. They gotta make something off of it
I definitely bought the book in part to support the store I play it

@Ryan ditto. Rather, I bought it from the store rather than online as a gratuity to the store.

I'm not that experienced but just read Druids and they sound a bit overpowered to me
At 2nd level a Shepherd can just always speak to animals

Ooh... sleeping in med/heavy armor doesn't reduce exhaustion.
@Ryan This-all was also my first reaction to that "ten rules" page. WHY DID YOU NOT RELEASE THAT FOR FREE AND INCORPORATE IT INTO THE PBR YEARS AGO!?

4:37 AM
Scout is a bit of a letdown. I was hoping it would be more outside of combat utility

@Ryan Eyebrow is up at the inclusion of Sun Soul, Mastermind, Swashbuckler, &c from SCAG.

Didnt buy SCAG so I don't know
are they exact same?

Haven't actually checked, but on spec they look that way.

oooh I might have to rework some of my bard before I hit level 5 and then multiclass swashbuckler. That's awesome

My last full-campaign character was a dex-based Ftr/Ro archer/sharpshooter. With so much loaded onto one stat, I went ahead and piled a bunch into Cha, dumped expertise into both performance and persuasion, and took swashbuckler when the time came. It made for a nice little bit of side-flavor.
She only got into melee once or twice, but cries of "huzzah!" and "adventure!" rang out frequently.

4:54 AM
I'm working up a list of dangers for tonight's "Planetary Rescue Squad" playtest.
> - A rich thrill-seeker's spaceship is damaged when she flies into the tail of Halley's Comet to impress her husband.
- An orbiting solar energy station loses its targeting and begins shooting plasma bolts at the Earth.
- A heavy metal reclamation plant on the ocean floor suffers a compartment fire and is heading toward a trench.
- A landfill mine in Nigeria is collapsing, endangering the supervisors of the automated diggers.
- A luxury hotel in Earth orbit has a hull breach.
- Teenage mountaineers are stranded by a landslide in the New Zealand Alps, and a storm is coming in.
I want to do something with an extreme vlogger who needs to get rescued from something...
> - An extreme experience vlogger is trapped on a calving glacier.

@BESW I thought they were teenage mutant ninja turtles at first
the mountaineers
XD

2 hours later…
6:48 AM
@BESW Anyone use a soundboard with looping ambient noises? Like "Spooky forest at night" or "Festive tavern"?

7:20 AM
When a bard levels up, where does he get spells from? Or does he just have to go out and buy them from others?
Ah, in 2e "In addition, bards never gain spells automatically and must acquire their spells by luck and circumstance, finding them wherever they can."

7:59 AM
@nitsua60 They're the same. They put them in again because they were the most popular SCAG classes and for the AL PHB+1 rule.

6 hours later…
1:55 PM
So torn now on Colleges. College of Swords would give me some combat utility which I currently have very little. College of Glamour is pretty interesting for roleplaying. Or could stick with one of the original colleges where I was leaning towards College of Valor

2:25 PM
What are the highlights of Swords and Glamour?
Swords and Glamour could be the name of a fantasy adventure RPG.

2:47 PM
I sort of wish I had gone for Valor. I thought being a support caster in 5e would've been more interesting when going for Lore. Cutting words is nice, but it's, err, an awkward rule.
I have to tell the GM to roll openly when I may want to use it, which feels clunky.
The reason I didn't go for valor was the juggling between sword, rapier and shield it would've taken, but I guess I could've lived with it.

3:14 PM
@kviiri on that ravier vs. 2-dagger "answer" you're right, of course, about the rapier not being light. I'm not going to drop that in a comment, though, as I'm trying to restrain myself to the practice of "point out the HUGE flaw then wait and see if they engage." In this case I felt the fact that it was an unexplained one-liner phrased in a "why don't you just ___ ?" is what dooms it; if they edit then we can start cleaning up the misconceptions about weapon properties, &c.
(Frankly, though, I'm feeling cynical today: I don't expect OP to come back and do anything. So the comment's there for posterity: "here's a thing you can do badly and expect a bad reception.")

3:37 PM
@nitsua60 I was sort of hoping they'd improve the answer in the course of correcting it, or just delete it altogether as adding no value. A new user probably gets the concept of their answer being factually wrong better than the concept of being as rigorous as the community is here
But yeah, I see what you mean

1 hour later…
4:53 PM
hey there @kviiri and @Trish

5:29 PM
@kviiri That's a good point, though. Hard to tell which tack is "better," if any =)

6:16 PM
hey there @nitsua60

6:30 PM
@Shalvenay Hello!

how're things going?

Fine thanks, celebrating father's day a day early because old man is working tomorrow
How about you?

alright here. still trying to keep my eyes peeled for a shot at playing DW again...

6:47 PM
@Shalvenay Neat. Would it be your first time playing DW?

@kviiri second

No wait, "again".... So prolly not

(first one was with nitsua, BESW, VI, and Sandwich...was fun, but kinda awkward since it was nitsua's first time too)
(I'd also like to give the Paladin playbook a whirl)

I've tried DW a couple of times but never quite got it.
It's sort of in the uncanny valley for me, between DnD and Apocalypse World but not really matching my ideal model of either's virtues :P

ah. my objection to AW itself is that I don't "get" post-apoc at all

6:55 PM
I can understand that. I'm not really a post-apocalyptic geek myself, so I've tried to make fantasy conversions of AW myself, trying to be honest to the design of AW
I'm too lazy to have had succeeded yet though.

ah

I'm not a fantasy geek either, when it comes to literature or movies... but for RPGs I find it to work quite well ;)

ah. I'm not a literary/moviegoing type to begin with

And well. When I do run post-apo, it's not the Mad Max with its scorched wastelands stuff. It's usually deep winter. I can associate with cold more easily :)

@kviiri hahahaha

7:02 PM
The concrete brutalist suburbs are so boring they actually become better with a side of nuclear winter
Well, not really "boring", but gloomy. I think they're rather fascinating in all their utilitarianism :)
@Shalvenay The paladin seems like a very cool concept in DW
The quest mechanic is a good example of unique class flavor it offers.

7:46 PM
@Shalvenay At some point, we could try playing DW by chat
I'm rather inexperienced in play-by-text RPGs but would love to try it out

@kviiri yeah, that'd work by me. just a matter of finding a player or two. and we could get on Discord and play by voice chat if you'd think that'd work better

I will need to finish my thesis first though
:P
My go-to anti-fun excuse.

8:20 PM
hey there @HadesHerald

Oh boy
Yesterday, I was worrying I might not get enough players for my AW one shots. But now I've got two full tables coming in <3

LOL

Sudden Doodle spikes hurrah
