Humble Bundle has a Pathfinder comics bundle now, as well as the Pathfinder rules bundle
@BESW if you can fit it in your Cool Stuff? ^

Sweet kittens on sticks, the Cool Stuff is getting packed.
2
**Cool RPG stuff:** [Bundle of Holding](http://bundleofholding.com "buy RPGs cheap in bulk, support charities & indie designers!");
[Storium launch](https://storium.com/ "Still no native library of storycard art, though.");
[Conan RPG](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/modiphius/robert-e-howards-conan-roleplaying-game "'the most authentic Conan roleplaying experience yet'");
[Humble PF comics](https://www.humblebundle.com/books/pathfinder-comic-bundle "Pathfinder comics for cheap and charity");
BTW, I try to keep the pin ordered by expiration date, with the most time sensitive stuff at the end of the list. WWI has a day to go.

12:41 AM
Hey.
I've been trying to find good places to read about RPG theory.
Would making a question asking for recommendations of places to read about go against the "no recommendations" rule?

I suspect so? Generally the Stack wants to itself be a repository of knowledge, rather than a clearinghouse for other repositories.
So you'd have to phrase it carefully.

@Althis I think here would be a decent place. To your point: yes, asking for recommendations of places for reading would be problematic.

But yes, the chat would be happy to offer suggestions. What are you interested in?

Then there's this list, which is basically our workaround.

I need the basics.

12:46 AM
Writing? Running? Playing?

I've tried reading on Big Model, but it is a bit too advanced for me.
I GM and play regularly, I've just never went into the academic side.
There is a lot of jargon I do not understand, for example IIEE.
I've never heard of it until today.
And the difference between task and conflict.
So...

I'm not familiar with IIEE myself.

Anyone have suggestions of where I could begin my exploration of the academic side of RPG Theory.

RPG theory is a sprawling and unwieldy thing, and most analyses tend to be fairly narrowly scoped to a particular playstyle or set of experiences and goals.

@BESW, it means Intent, Initiative, Execution, and Effect.
It is the regular order for resolution in RPGs.

12:51 AM
A lot of "modern" RPG theory incubated in The Forge, but it's a morass of self- and inter-referential jargon.
[pokes around for a lumpley resource that's less than five years old]

I've also found this:
But it is a bit biased.

I only know of one academic journal which caters to the RPG experience, and you're rightly unimpressed by it.
Bias is inherent in discourse; I prefer dialogues which acknowledge it.
You just need balancing opinions. [rummages around]

That would be great.

Vincent Baker has some good insights and resources, but that list of links it somewhat outdated.

The socratesrpg blog is written by someone that favors narrative RPGs a lot.
It would be good to have a perspective of a simulationist on this.

12:56 AM
Bankuei is more interested in the social context of RPGs.
ooh, I know exactly the blog. But I avoid it like the plague so it'll take a minute to dig up the name again.

...
Any reason I should know why you avoid it like the plague?
You know, just in case I haven't taken my shots lately?
Btw, any idea of what OSR stands for?
Nevermind, found a glossary.

Huh, Chrome Guy hasn't posted anything for almost a year.
Whitehall-ParaIndustries is his blog. He makes some interesting points and talks a lot not just about RPG theory but about RPG meta-theory. He's also prone to addressing "But what about [thing which counters his point]?" with "That game sucks so it doesn't count."
@Althis I rant a little bit about his rhetorical style starting here.

Nice.

But he's probably a good jumping-off point for links to other RPG theory resources‌.

I will have a looooong read.
Long night ahead.
Thanks for the help, @BESW and @nitsua60.

1:06 AM
He argues that system doesn't matter because nobody uses the system anyway: "This explains why such horrible rules as D&D (any version, any company) and the 40K rpgs sell. None of the buyers ever used the rules enough to figure out that they suck." (source)
Lots of ad hominem attacks in there, be warned.

@Althis I know very little to add. I would recommend Garfield & Elias Characteristics of Games as a really nice primer on games in general. I find myself thinking in their terms about my game as often as I do anyone else.

@Althis No problem. Come back when you're done with those, there are plenty more. Eventually some essay will bring you to The Forge.

Characteristics of Games if you're interested.

@Althis Oh, and if you haven't seen Brian's list of RPG papers in his profile, check them out.
They're not quite RPG theory in the same sense as most of the rest of what we've been talking about, but they're pretty interesting studies.

@BESW second that

1:25 AM
Ooh, I overlooked the Shadowcraft beta. [downloads]
Shadowcraft is a Fate game set in a fey realm from which the fey are long gone, leaving behind only the descendants of mortals they kidnapped and then changed, body and soul, according to their needs and whims.

huh, that sounds,.. both pretty cool and very bizarre

PCs are special secret agents working to keep a Cold War style truce from breaking into outright conflict, but also working to undermine the other side in order to end the Cold War without massive bloodshed.

ah, so it's set quite a while after said Fey Disappearance

Yeah.
I'm liking the magic system. [reads more]
You always have to roll to use magic, and if you fail or tie, you must succeed at cost.
The cost is an aspect (or boost, if you tie) representing how your body and soul are melding with the magical essence the fey infused into your ancestors. Stoneskin folk become more rocklike, Glassborn get more beautiful and ephemeral, Sylvans become more bestial.

1:41 AM
I haven't been over to ENWorld for a while--lordy is WotC drip-feeding Strahd material!

If you get too many "Essence fracture" aspects at once, your PC merges completely with the Essence of their magical being and is lost in the Realm Tenebrous (presumably forever, though I assume a suitably epic quest might be able to retrieve them).

Yeah. I saw about 5 "Strahd something-or-other" notifications in a row, on the chat feed earlier

You heal Essence fractures by (if you only have a few) taking a scene to reinforce your sense of self by remembering the things that are very you, or by (if you have a lot) doing something active that reinforces who you are.

@Adeptus "WotC releases font sizes used in Curse of Strahd." "WotC releases number of signatures in Curse of Strahd printing." "Chris Perkins wants you to know he just responded to an e-mail about Curse of Strahd."
(That said, it's pretty cool reading the foreword from Hickman.)

The cool thing about Essence fractures is that they can be generally beneficial aspects, like Stony skin or Sharp claws.
Ooh. @doppelgreener! Shadowcraft does Things With Conflicts that you might like.

2:21 AM
@BESW oh boy!

2:44 AM
@BESW Where is this available? (Or were you a backer?)

3:13 AM
so...I've been thinking about the UD and wondering "why the heck isn't vitamin D deficiency endemic down there?"
(esp. among Drow, unless they have a biochemical workaround for not getting tons and tons of UV, as their dark skin would otherwise require)

why "esp. among Drow"? b/c they're adapted surface-dwellers, rather than evolved under-dwellers?

@nitsua60 unless they have a biochemical work-around for the need for UV exposure to activate vitamin D....it's due to their dark skin

hmm... it would appear my eyes were derailed by that comma and I never made it to the end of the sentence =/

@Shalvenay because in fantasy land there's no vitamin D.

3:29 AM
It is well known that certain species of fungi drow use for illumination (so called 'Flashers', relatives of 'Shriekers') provide them with all the ultraviolet radiation they need.

@Magician heheh

How do deep-dwelling (under sea or ground) real-world creatures handle it? Or is that what you're referring to by "biochemical workaround"?

@Adeptus possibly. I'm not sure how deep-dwellers get their vitamin D working

4:01 AM
@Shalvenay to worldbuilding! (.SE)

1 hour later…
5:13 AM
That Duellist question is interesting. KRyan's answer got me thinking, would some of it work well with a gishy build, or would it take away too many caster levels?

@doppelgreener It's a backer thing.

@Adeptus That duellist question is interesting but one sentence reminds me how much this isn't the D&D I grew up with: "So when charging defensively, our guy's stats look like this while naked: AC 29" (emphasis mine)

"Charging defensively" is a difficult concept to imagine. Or did you also mean, higher AC is better? (which makes more sense to me, but yes, it's different from 2e & older)

5:28 AM
@nitsua60 Do you mean to say you didn't charge naked while playing D&D? How strange.

@Magician The player, or the character?

@Adeptus Yes.

6:04 AM
@Adeptus Given that the maximum number of caster levels most gish builds are ok with giving up is 3, I'd venture to suggest that almost nothing there is usable for a gish.

True. I'm not a great optimiser, but looking at all the "AC+ when unarmored" options (especially when it's +INT) makes me think they'd be useful for wizards

@Adeptus Tbh, wizards have so many options that are so much better that it's not really worth bothering with.
In particular, every gish wants Abjurant Champion anyway, and it provides more AC than most monsters know what to do with.

7:01 AM
hey

Hay.
**Cool RPG stuff:** [Bundle of Holding](http://bundleofholding.com "buy RPGs cheap in bulk, support charities & indie designers!");
[Deep Dark Blue](http://drivethrurpg.com/product/175636/Deep-Dark-Blue--A-World-of-Adventure-for-Fate-Core "A World of Adventure for Fate Core awaits between the devil and the deep blue sea…");
[Storium launch](https://storium.com/ "Still no native library of storycard art, though.");
[Conan RPG](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/modiphius/robert-e-howards-conan-roleplaying-game "'the most authentic Conan roleplaying experience yet'");
Added a Shadow of the Century beta playtest survey, and a new World of Adventure for Fate.
@Magician Deep Dark Blue has "A crew-based character creation system to help create a cohesive and balanced group" and "A ship-specific condition system—like consequences, but with specific effects and duration."

7:56 AM
@BESW So many links!

@doppelgreener I know, right. I had to strip a lot of them down.

If we had any more we'd have to have a More Cool RPG stuff pin.

I could strip them down a little more.
Remove "Cool," reduce "Bundle of Holding" to "Bundle," "Storium launch" to "Storium," "Conan RPG" to "Conan."

@BESW "PF Comics; PF Bundle" -> "PF Comics & Bundle"

True.
But that'd mess with the expiration date orders.
And I feel kinda strongly about keeping that.

8:00 AM
"7th Sea 2e" -> "Sea". "Weird War I" -> "I".

[snerk]

8:10 AM
Deep Dark Blue has a fun "no guns, you idiot!" rule that'd be good for using in spaceship games too:
> When a PC attacks with a firearm inside a vessel and misses, the player must spend a fate point or damage the vessel instead. The hit deals shifts equal to the margin of failure.

1 hour later…
9:38 AM
@BESW How's Guam today?

Our library is pathetically underfunded.

Do you also have just one library?

They just completed a new expansion, but don't have the money to hire anyone to work in it.

@BESW that isn't something that has changed recently :(

We used to have six libraries, mostly in the south and central.
Now most of them are closed, or are hardly open at all.
They're using a library bus from the central building instead.

9:43 AM
Well, libraries everywhere are struggling - but I would think an island far away from publishing houses would take priority in their access to printed culture.

[digs up recent hours]
All five of the southern libraries are open for 7 and a half hours one day a week. The central library is open six days a week.
@eimyr It used to be a pretty big deal, but keeping books from rotting in the tropics is super expensive. As the Internet became more prevalent, the library lost funding.

Hm.

yeah I do think many libraries don't have to put up with some of the things ours does, like the really high humidity
still, I am not fond of the fact that that library is so ,... bad

For a while they didn't have enough money to keep the A/C on all the time, and almost everything moulded quite dramatically.

mhmm I would think so
the AC is not just there to cool stuff
it removes humidity from the room/building. I actually suspect at least a few people did not realize that when the decision was made

9:53 AM
I'm a humble honest man. How do I roleplay charismatically, manipulative and / or deceitful?

52
Q: How can I roleplay a character more manipulative than myself?

ZibbobzIn a game of Maids RP (don't laugh) right now, I'm playing a character significantly more 'cunning' than me. I don't have a problem playing intelligent characters - I consider myself fairly smart, and this question fully covers ways to play characters with higher intelligence. The problem is...

Thanks! :D

Q: How can I roleplay my evil character properly?

DiscipolI have started playing as an evil character in a group of neutral and good characters. We are traveling in a caravan through an undead-ridden world. No teleportation or plane traveling possible. We travel from city to city (fortresses, really) to do trade, but we specifically handle protection. ...

Q: How do I GM a character immeasurably more intelligent than myself?

the dark wandererIn the near future I am likely to have to GM God. Part of the difficulty I perceive I am going to have in this is God is immeasurably smarter, wiser, more creative, etc than I am - not by a quantifiable degree, but entirely on a different order. Ordinarily when I GM characters that are better t...

I'm going to assume one of you just upvoted my "avoiding cliches" question.

lol

@MarcDingena Man, your shadowdude is a handful. I hope it's as fun as it's challenging.
@BESW gotta use them votes

9:57 AM
@eimyr It's also female, another challenge :P

@MarcDingena I feel compelled

Q: As a man, how can I roleplay a woman better?

C. RossI rarely play characters of the opposite sex, and I find that I'm not very good at it, at least in my own estimation. This is hampering when I GM because it limits my range, and makes things hard when I do role-play a female. I'm comparing my depiction of females to how I would play a male cha...

Q: Group social issues when roleplaying as the opposite gender

PureferretSome time ago I was thinking of a character for a system (which I won't mention, to avoid any bias) who was of the opposite gender. I'm fairly convinced that it's because of the characters background, and the angle I wanted to roleplay from, nothing Freudian (although wondering if it is Freudian,...

Roleplaying a woman is a fallacy in itself.

links everywhere

I really wanted to get out of my comfort zone with this one. I succeeded but I feel stumped during the sessions. The GM threw a couple of important NPCs may way and all of them are "very uncooperative" and I feel I lack the roleplaying skills to get them to spill their beans. I don't necessarily want to resort to Charm Person if I can help it.

9:59 AM
@eimyr I do not understand the reasoning there

@MarcDingena One thing I didn't see in those answers is that, depending on the system, often you can lean on the mechanics.

I mean, I get it a little if you mean that it shouldn't make too big a difference, but your still roleplaying someone
who has just that one other thing that is different to you yourself

Just like you don't have to know how to pick a lock or swing a sword to play someone who's excellent at doing those things, you can often use the mechanics to manipulate or lie or charm without doing it yourself.

@trogdor approaching roleplaying "a woman" is about as accurate as rping "a human" or "a man". It says nothing and should say nothing - unless you bring a bag of stereotypes along, which is a whole new level failure to understand the problem. Therefore Marc saying "it's also female" is a legit concern, but "I'm gunna RP a lady!" is not.

that does make sense

10:03 AM
tl;dr gender or sex does not define a character in a meaningful way. It contributes to the character but is not enough to even start.

I don't think it means you would ignore your characters gender completely, but I do agree that there are appropriate ways to handle it
and stereotypes are not included in those appropriate ways

Yeah, that's what I mean. Also, I don't think Marc is at fault here at all, I'm just going on a tangent.

mm
I didn't think you were blaming him XD

@MarcDingena BTW your 'humble honest man' trying to act 'deceitful' reminded me of Crusader Kings.
OK, I have a request which may put some of you outside of their comfort zones...
I hope I'm not too rude.
Some time ago I posted this:
It has violence, animals and what can only be a nightclub.
The music fits perfectly to the presented image of a slightly upper scale striptease establishment.
I want to portray that in a RPG, sans animals. I need more music, not necessarily by Caravan Palace or similar electro-swing bands, but possibly.
HALP, PLOX

@eimyr I actually still listen to this every once in a while due to said earlier link
great music

10:11 AM
@trogdor Caravan Palace all the way, but I knew them from other hit singles already. This one, however, is a masterpiece.

@eimyr I seem to recall one or two other things from them I really really liked?
can't name the songs though

Beatophone, Dramophone, Clash, Suzy or Panic most likely

probably one of the ones with phone in it?
XD
I am so bad at remembering this stuff
duh,.... I can probably check their youtube channel XD
anyway
@eimyr what kind of setting is it?

modern, Mage: Ascension (duh)

10:14 AM
can't say I am in any way an expert, but at least I have seen plenty of movies with a nightclub scene or two XD

@trogdor The main "challenge presented" I tried to imply, was the fact that I can use my gender to manipulate the opposite gender. But as a player, I only know this social interaction in one direction and in-character I now have to do it in the opposite direction.

These are kind different, in opposite directions, not sure if either works for you:

I actually knew Ode to the bouncer already and it's close, but not quite "would play in the background while PCs sit in that nightclub"

Some Squirrel Nut Zippers, like My Drag?

That Amiel one is perfect

10:19 AM
@eimyr I will see if I can help, but I have some work to do atm. In the mean time you can check out my music website for some electro swing mixes. They all have tracklists so possibly a plethora of useful stuff in there for you. I didn't actually watch your video because I'm at work. But going by your request for "electro swing" this might help. :)

It's totally not what you're looking for, but an acoustic version of The Hollow is begging to be mentioned.

I also have many more genres you can check out, just click the Play link in the navigation bar.
Nu Disco or Indie Dance might fit your needs too.

How about some Poe? Angry Johnny and Trigger Happy Jack.

@MarcDingena It's more "nigthclub stripping music with swingy roots" than that, but thanks, I'll take a look.

Also, for some reason, Beats Antique comes to mind although that's nothing like swing electro. But it's more like "seductive" music.

I'm too sexy for this song.
this would surprisingly work

Cool. I think I want to drop the RnB ones, but it's good variation.
Maybe I should put it into Pandora one more time

@BESW

Save Game has the skill Hax, with attendant stunts like:
> Unused Code. Spend a coin to roll Hax, opposed by the target’s Hax. If you succeed, roll on the signature aspect chart (page 20) to create a new aspect. This aspect replaces one of the target’s signature aspects, your choice, for the rest of the scene.

Hey gang :)

yo
wazzup?
I just went on a rant about how lances are.
I hope KRyan doesn't destroy my sorry ass.

say what now?

@DavidWilkins Ass destruction is a proud tradition of RPG.SE.

where did said rant take place?

I edited it for clarity, as I was speaking from simulationist/real-life perspective. A lance is a specialized war weapon, designed specifically to turn enemies, mounted or not, into screaming skewers. It's not designed for agility, durability (yes, even war-lances were rarely useable after a charge, either because they broke or had several bodies impaled onto them) or attacking outside of a charge - for that you would resort to your mace, waraxe, estoc, saber, whatever agile melee weapon is appropriate for the enemies engaged. — eimyr 4 mins ago

2:02 PM
Was the question "Why is wielding a 10 foot pole in battle ridiculous"?

It was a comment about why two-handed wielding of a lance while mounted is a poor idea in real life.
I would probably have a very different opinion on the matter if it was a spear or a glaive, but a lance - no, thank you.

I guess as long as you don't have to steer the horse, why not? Archers can shoot from horseback
and riflemen
when in a joust, you have to steer the animal, because horses, by nature, don't tend to run full speed at each other

@eimyr I have to admit, I don't see how any of this is relevant to the question of using a lance with two hands. Using it outside of a charge, yes, but you haven't even mentioned two hands in there.

In a charge a lance would've been held in the hand and the crook of the elbow - the other hand would wield a shield
source: Heath Ledger

@Polyducks is right

2:06 PM
A knight's tale was quite historically accurate when it wasn't being not historically accurate.

what the hell, where did I get steering from :P

@Polyducks This still has nothing to do with whether it's viable or not to use a lance with two hands.

You'd wield the shield on the forearm of your non-jousting arm and steer with the hand of the non-jousting arm on the reigns

so I WAS right

@Miniman You can use both hands when standing, but doing so on horseback would require you to twist your body to keep it pointed forward. The jolting of the horse would cause you severe back injury.

2:07 PM
sorta

Sorta ;)

@Miniman In the answer I answer "yes" to the question of whether you can use it two handed while mounted. I also comment that I consider it ridiculously unrealistic and therefore would rule against it as a GM, but I leave it to the discretion of the querent.
I don't see how it's a non-sequitur.

@eimyr It isn't, but your answer doesn't include your reasoning for declaring it an absurdity, and neither does your comment.

You'd pretty much have to wield it in two hands when standing. Two legs just aren't a sturdy enough platform for holding it in hand and crook of elbow as if you were riding a horse.
@Miniman good point

@Miniman Good point. I thought it would be obvious. I'll go edit.

Q: Questions about lances and mounted combat

Me_MaikeyA lance is a 2 handed reach weapon. PHB also states the following: Lance: A lance deals double damage when used from the back of a charging mount. It has reach, so you can strike opponents 10 feet away with it, but you can’t use it against an adjacent foe. While mounted, you can wield a...

rewrite it and answer with "that or go to 2.0"

haha
Nothing to rewrite. The question is gone.
It was a 1rep user anyway

@Polyducks if it's a useful question, flagging and asking for undeletion is valid

I still want to hail King Torg.

Who? What?

It's from Kobolds Ate My Baby.
It's a game about playing as kobolds.
And... well... committin heinous acts of violence and cannibalism, as kobolds do, while being totally inept and failure-prone.

That sounds actually quite enjoyable

One of the rules is that whenever King Torg (All hail King Torg!) is mentioned, everyone at the table has to exclaim "All hail King Torg!" (All hail King Torg!)

whoa

Yeah, it's the same old Cyan back again.
Several of the original Myst/Riven guys.

did not see that coming
"think again" → "think, again" is an awesome tagline for it, too
teaser seems just like a graphics/light demo, though
very pretty

Yeah, they haven't been showing off the actual puzzles.

suppose that's fair

(I Kickstarted this a couple years ago and have been on the mailing list for updates.)

nice
@BESW spreading the word, your report is appreciated

Yey!

> Man. This looks precisely like my jam. Nice find.
> I especially like how the trailer showed nearly nothing of the plot.

And yes, it does seem to be about alien abductions.
They've been very close-mouthed about exactly what's going on. Which is perfectly in keeping for a Myst successor.

indeed it is

But, you know, they've got enough currency with fans to cash in on "Trust us" and have it be taken as "oooh!" instead of "riiiight."

9:05 PM
yeah

I'm glad you know so many people who are excited about the Myst franchise.
I'm not so lucky.

well, that was one guy, so uh
I know one?
but I expect at least a couple others to also get excited when they see it

@Jack Hi!

@BESW got another nibble, with a question: is it going to be more like Myst or more like Riven?

Well, in what way? It looks to be more like Riven in the sense that the world is the puzzle, rather than having arcade puzzles sprinkled through the world.
But it may be more like Myst in the sense that you don't start out with a clear objective.

dunno, that was all I got
but yeah, sounds like a lot of "well, we hope it's pretty much what we've been hoping for" combined with "they're being very mum"

I think they've been very cautious about not promising anything they'll wind up not being able to deliver.

How goes it?

it goes well, yourself?

Pretty good. Finally putting together a group for Blades in the Dark this weekend.
Hunting down some other 'how to run *World' stuff in prep

ah cool!

hey there @nitsua60

wazzup

@nitsua60 not a whole lot, as for you?

grading exams
it's like having someone punch you in the face repeatedly while screaming "your chosen career is pointless!"
and every once in a while a kid does a bright thing, and it's like the punching stopped
for a moment

@nitsua60 grading exams. the only thing worse than taking exams.

one of these days one of my geometry freshmen is going to get a PhD--they're just making up so much new math!

@BESW Oooh, I've been hearing good things about that.....

11:55 PM
I was active in the early-to-mid beta period and it was fun, but I had a hard time wrapping my head around how to make it work.
They've made a lot of improvements and I think it'll be easier now.

protip: "it has to be" is not likely to hold water as an argument in your mathematical proof.
(That is, I don't hew to some anthropic principle as regards your grade)

@nitsua60 :P

I dunno, man. Math collapses into philosophy if you poke it with a stick.
