@BESW music without lyrics.

Ah, so Cradle of Filth is perfect.

1:05 AM
@doppelgreener Elf vs Orc.

@doppelgreener My kind of scenario.
@BESW I started reading that the other day! I must continue sometime.

@Pixie Alas, it's remained unfinished for years.

Aww.

It's one of those "I'm not driven to finish it by the muse, and nobody's paying me to bang it out yet."

@BESW I got that sense from her description in the first chapter.

1:17 AM
I think her LJ has one or two more entries.

1:33 AM
Heh. I completely understand the method. I just recently picked up some stuff I had started about a year ago I think and suddenly got ~3500 words down in the past week or two.
> I forget stuff all the time, and then I get excited when I re-read it, because dude, that was awesome! I gotta write more!
That happened, exactly. xD

1:51 AM
that is a great feeling XD

Actually... like 5000 words. Wow. That is... more than I've written consistently in a fiction project in a long time. xD

losing track of how much you even wrote sounds like a good sign

I am bouncing around in the timeline so there are a number of separate documents. xD

2:33 AM
Post Dated check loan is an amazing ship

3:25 AM
(i think this person needs to find a shorter tumblr name to write beneath their comics)

Oh man I love Floccinaucinihilipilification
There are like eight or nine of those Harry potter comics on that page

@Sandwich Thank you for writing that out in an easily copyable and pastable manner. XD
Oh! They moved their blog or something, there's an 'a' now.
floccinaucinihilipilificationa.tumblr.com <- a thing to click for the comic's artist.

3:58 AM
And here's one using the magic of tags

@Sandwich I like the Gilderoy one a lot.

Heh heh yeah

4 hours later…
8:08 AM
@BESW @trogdor I suddenly have a new character I very much want to turn into a PC XD
(Maybe I'll do this after the trip back from N1 to earth!)

2 hours later…
9:50 AM
@trogdor @BESW there's a 4e question you might have some insight into.

0
Q: How to politely explain that a player's character doesn't fit the role as well as they think it does?

user14733An old friend of mine who had to leave our gaming group for various reasons recently returned. He created a new character since we had gone a long way since he had left and he wanted to try a defender. He put together a Warden and joined our group. He optimized the character's health and healing ...

I'm tempted to start a new one-answers-all trend: "Give him the link to your question and let him figure out.".

@Zachiel that would be a poor answer.
there are actually things to explain here about the role of a defender in D&D 4e.
and, also, I pinged a couple of people who have direct experience with 4e's Wardens and might have insight into what this person could adjust to better fulfil their role, and what they could have done poorly to end up in this state.
(one of the things they did was misunderstand the defender role)

My next suggestion would just be "Keep attacking the squishies until he's facing all the enemies alone, with 7 damage per round and not-infinite life" but that'd be just as bad.

Yes, that is not how the defender works.
There is actually technique involved in being a successful defender, and for each defender class the techniques involved are different.

10:07 AM
No, I mean, his problem is not building a defender, it's understanding that, as a defender, it's his role to be sticky. He seems not to care, thinking the controller is the one who has to do all the job (in my game, the controller brings enemies into defender range), thus failing at his role because he isn't even trying. He's maximizing survivability, at the expense of everything else. He's as ignorable as the worst D&D 3.5e so-called tanks.
Which is not a problem to him but to his party, at least until he's in the "First they came for the controller, and I did not tank, because I was not a controller". Which will ultimately result in "Then they came for me - and there was no one left to [well, kill my enemies] for me". But that only comes after the whole thing has become unfun for everyone else.

10:30 AM
@Zachiel Yes, this is precisely the thing. He believes the role of a defender is to not get hit and not die ever, in the fashion of what it means to be a tank. But defenders do have to be sticky, or otherwise repel people, so he doesn't understand the defender role, so an answer to this question will also probably cover how to explain the defender role to someone with this misunderstanding.
@BESW you are missing a semicolon before Downfall in Cool Stuff

12:55 PM
> Green is my favourite colour. You get +1 to create advantages by placing magical aspects on green targets.

@BESW Hahaha! This sounds fun.
I got into a brief conversation with a friend about her, and she suggested this girl might be a fun doctor. So I'm going to make one of her aspects about her being a "fun" doctor (with exaggerated finger quotes)
fun for her but with possibly terrible consequences XD

> Hewgy and Mewny. You can use Notice instead of Contacts to overcome when trying to learn information.
> Unavoidable collateral damage. You can take a faction consequence of the lowest available slot to automatically succeed on a roll.

@BESW I LOVE IT.
@BESW This works well :D

> Alchemical shot. Once per session, spend a Fate point to declare that your gun is loaded with ammunition which lets you ignore a particular kind of physical immunity to stress for the rest of the scene.
> Specially tinted lenses. You can use Alchemy in place of Notice or any magical skill when creating advantages about existing magical effects.

@BESW I see you too concluded she's an alchemist! I'm glad, I think the apron suits her well XD
@BESW Hmm. How would this interact with things we've seen so far?
(Have we seen something like this so far?)

1:08 PM
> Heavy lab gear. You have armor:2 against physical stress inflicted by temperature or chemicals.
@doppelgreener We haven't done much with immunity yet.
But it'd be things like Bulletproof.
For a werewolf, she's got silver shot.
For a vampire, holy water cartridges or charcoal-tipped stakeshot.

yeah, we would just have to make sure that enemies like that show up if you play this character
with a stunt like that I mean

1:23 PM
@doppelgreener For a more general version, try "...loaded with exactly the right ammunition you need (describe it specifically) for the rest of the scene."

Q: What to do if I wish I'd worded the question differently?

RichardJI recently asked this question about simplified character creation rules, and it's received a few answers, but I'm wishing that instead I'd omitted the word 'rules' and just asked about simplified (or simplifying) character creation. I'm not sure if the two questions would actually get different...

1 hour later…
2:37 PM
@BESW I will do this! Because @trogdor I don't want to necessarily force that, and this one's useful in other cases too
> Unavoidable collateral damage. You can take a faction consequence of the lowest available slot to either automatically succeed on a roll or gain +4 to it.
for a version that also works with Attacks, or other cases where more shifts makes more sense than automatic success.

3:12 PM
@doppelgreener One of the things I thought when I first saw that picture that was "she reminds me a little of a lady version of November," one of my boyfriend's "fun" doctors. XD But very alchemist-y, yes.

@Pixie She might be both a doctor and an alchemist. (But not very good at one of those?)

@doppelgreener Totally possible! (Nov is a doctor and a necromancer.)

@Pixie That is a worrying combination. Or a reassuring one, since dying on the operating table won't be much of an issue?

1 hour later…
4:34 PM
@doppelgreener Nope it's definitely a worrying combination. XD

1 hour later…
5:35 PM
lovely: how do I get dried-up cat barf off of the back of my computer? wet paper towel?

Is it on anything electronic, or just on the case?
If it's just on the case, a wet paper towel is probably your best bet.

5:56 PM
Is it feasible to have a coconut crab as your familiar?
In 5e

Coconut cream?

@DuckTapeAl alas no, coconut crab

Lol.

I think they'd be a small creatures at least
Also wet paper towel is a cure-all for cat vomit.

What's the name of the spell to get a familiar?
I forget, which makes it harder to look up. :P
Aha. It's find familiar.
Not call, conjure, summon, or create familiar.
Looks like crab is on the list for Find Familiar.
So, unless coconut crabs are like, freakishly big or something, that's probably fine.

6:06 PM
@DuckTapeAl -- just on the case, and a clorox wipe followed by a paper towel to dry did it
now...how the freak do I get all this dust out of my CPU HSF? I have a can of air, but it's wimpy and worthless

I'd suggest canned air and q-tips.

q-tips are an idea yes
because my canned air isn't doing the job

Q-tips definitely

@DuckTapeAl yes.

Yes, as in, they're freakishly big?
I'm glad I didn't google them, then. :)
Could oyu please edit that photo put?
[;easE?
Thank you.

6:20 PM
@DuckTapeAl oops
I think they're cute

Large things with exoskeletons really freak me out.
I think, like most questions about 5e, that it ends up being more of an 'ask your DM' thing than anything else.
Personally, I wouldn't have a problem with a larger familiar than standard.

Since it still wouldn't be big or strong enough to cause problems.
Ha ha.
-.-
So, I'd allow a coconut crab familiar, but I don't think a DM would be overstepping their bounds to disallow one.

@DuckTapeAl I think half the problem here is that players like to think the internet is backing them up

Laura?

7:15 PM
welp, this is bad. I have a computer that's emitting a variable-interval, repetitive rasping sound
it makes me think "fan is on the way out" but I'm not sure how to rule out that it could be the hard drive

@Shalvenay snake

Uh-oh.

@DuckTapeAl -- are you saying that it is the hard drive going?

No, just that your computer making odd noises is a bad thing. :P
Though if you just messed with the fan or heat sink, that makes 'fan problem' a little more likely.
Have you noticed any problems accessing the hard drive when the sound happens?

@DuckTapeAl -- not at all, it seems to run OK save for the noise
no sign of I/O errors in the logs that'd tip me off to impending disk doom
(although, in other news, it did lose my WLAN card altogether)

7:20 PM
Probably not HDD then.
Most HDD errors that cause a noise also cause I/O errors when the noise happens.

good to know
although I tried using my finger to stop each fan in turn save for the PSU fan, and the rasping noise persisted

Including your CPU fan?

yes

Hmm.
Weird.
shrug

if it helps, the case fans are ball-bearing types.
(CPU HSF is a stock Intel unit)

7:29 PM
In other news, I now own a fridge that keeps things cold

@Pureferret That's hot

1 hour later…
8:59 PM
@DuckTapeAl -- good news: I found and squelched the noise source, it was a stray cable interfering with the power supply fan. bad news: the WLAN card in that box is rather dead (first sign was that it flipped a bit in its PCI vendor ID; once I got that past that, the card wouldn't respond to the driver trying to upload the firmware blob to it)

1 hour later…
10:09 PM
also, anyone here care to help me with a bit of encounter design?
(5e btw)

10:32 PM
/me pokes @Sandwich

Whats it up
Erm
Whats up
Sure
I can help

:) good. I'm trying to work on a low-level encounter for a small party (1 ranger initially, joined by 1 sorc partway through) and having trouble getting a feel for how to balance it
right now, I have 2 enemies on tap...both are AC 12, 1d8-1 bandits, but one has a dagger at +0/1d4 and the other has a shortbow at +3/1d6+3. I'm slightly concerned that the DPR of the shortbow bandit might be a bit high for a first level party though
should I just nerf the shortbow bandit some more? or should I not be concerned about it, even though I'm dealing with level 1 chars here?

How much health do your PCs have right now, average?

let me think here, in the 8 to 9 range?
yeah, 9

Alright so if your shortbow guy wins initiative and lands an attack and rolls max damage die, someone would get dropped to zero
Generally something you'd like to avoid since he is most likely going to win because he has +2 dex I assume?

10:43 PM
+2 to DEX yes

It should be easy for the sorcerer to down one of them if they have 1d8-1 hit points
But that depends on his spells

yeah, they'll drop in a hit or two
so that's not the issue

The ranger could have similar ability to drop one as well if he's using bows
So the best way to build an encounter is to design it so on average it should take 3 encounters to completely deplete your players resources

the ranger has a bow I think, but the encounter's going to start with a "jump out into the road in front of the ranger" scene

So they're highwaymen

10:45 PM
@Sandwich -- yep

Does 5-E have different rules on bow damage?

@Sandwich -- let me double check

Because 3.5E and Pathfinder made it so you can only get your strength to bow damage if you have a strength modifier and a mighty composite bow

@Sandwich -- you get your ability bonus, but not your proficiency mod

So your dex for that guy would be +2, and proficiency wouldn't count yes?

10:48 PM
+1 dexmod

You said +2 a little while ago

+2 to DEX
not +2 dex mod

I'm confused. Are modifiers different in 5E as well?

no
I was just talking about the stat itself and not the modifier, sorry :)
so he has 12 DEX total and a +1 mod as a result

So would that be 1d6+1 shortbow damage or 1d6+3? I'm getting a tad confused myself

10:52 PM
+1 because the proficiency mod isn't applied to damage rolls

Alright thats better then

@Pixie Oh good! Well as long as we're clear :D

Which means that both need to attack one target and hit with max damage to down them
That should be fine

yeah

They should be able to survive a few of those, maybe drop a few more healing potions in the loot since theres only two of them
Other than that you should be fine
Perhaps build that encounter into a larger one in the future
Something like the Highwaymen being a part of a bandit clan

11:04 PM
yeah. I'm thinking this will be a prelude to them having to raid a bandit hideout or something

Have the PCs find something on both of the bandits that shares some kind of imagery
Like a snake, or a wolf, or a dagger dripping poison or something to that effect
And then give them the means to seek out the lead that you've provided them
Doesn't have to be anything big
A pewter amulet, a coin, A signet ring, an image scratched into the wooden hilt of a dagger, etc.

good idea
I'll have to go in and cook up a bit of loot for them once I get done with my 2e session tonight

If theres only two of them I'd add potions to the loot until you find more players

"find more players" won
*won't happen with this campaign

You can always throw in a low level NPC cleric hireling or something

11:12 PM
as in a NPC one of the players can take on, or a DMPC?
err, take and play I mean :)

An NPC that has minor impact on the combat
Make him a coward or something
So that the PCs get the limelight

right, so a "cameo" cleric vs. one that stays with the party

11:41 PM
Yeah
Right

11:59 PM
that might be arrange-able
if absolutely needed
