00:00 - 15:0015:00 - 00:00

3:00 PM
I love the board games and card games line for comparison

@DuckTapeAl - Are druids divine or arcane? I would assume divine, but...

Yup.
Divine.

4e thought: Primal

I don't think we currently have one, but I'm pretty sure that's something we can get around.

Another technical question then - if a staff comes with 1 charge per the description, can it be charged higher than that?

3:03 PM
I don't think so.

@JohnP ASK IT ON THE SITE, but first look tos ee if it hasnt already been asked

Well, first check the srd entry on staves, to make sure it isn't super obvious.
Such things are downvotes made of.
"Staves hold a maximum of 10 charges."
And there's a bunch of stuff saying that staves all start with 10 charges.
What staff says it starts with 1?

Yeah, I was misreading the description.
I do that a lot when skimming.
besides, it's too expensive for @DuckTapeAl, even the creation of the item is 42k.

Eesh.
What item?

Unless he can get access to a druid.

3:09 PM
I may be able to get some kind of access to druid spells.

Never mind. Skimming kills me again, move earth can't be used for tunneling.

I've got Psychic Reformation, and I'm pretty sure there's something somewhere that would let a cleric use druid spells.
...you know, now that I think of it, I haven't been able to find any real rules references for building stuff underground.
And the only aboveground building rules in PF that I know of are the downtime rules, which are generally not terribly well-built.

@DuckTapeAl - I'm not finding anything, other than suggestions to take over sewers or an abandoned mine. Unless you want to hire a clan of duergar or similar....

My current plan is to have an army of hundred of astral constructs excavate a new cave of my design over the course of several years.
We're using the Mythic rules, and with Mythic Recuperation and Advanced Constructs I can make something like 2000 astral constructs that can make checks up to DC 14, which should be enough for unskilled labor like that.

how is that cheap and fast?
that's only cheap.

3:21 PM
You're correct.
Thus the question.
Also, there aren't any rules that I know of for actually building an underground structure using skill checks. I'm asking a new question about that now.

Also, how are you getting around the duration limitation? Isn't it only like 1 rd per caster level or similar?

There's an option in the Advanced Constructs feat for Utility constructs.
They last hours per level, and can make low-DC skill checks.
But once they get in a fight, they only last rounds per level.

Ah, ok. I'm still at the beginning of the bell curve, I haven't even touched any of the advanced materials yet.
The spell "move earth" can't be used for tunneling, but possibly you could wangle something with your DM about using the constructs to shore up as stuff is removed?
Buy/make a staff of move earth, 10 charges of 750x750 ft of earth moving. Get a druid to recharge it, lather rinse repeat.
bb in a few, meeting.

Why not just use Psionic Disintegrate instead? Wouldn't that have the same effect?
Also, the fact that the spell says very clearly that you can't use it to tunnel sort of hurts your argument.

3:46 PM
Apparently I have ADD

@DavidWilkins What is the vertical in that chart?

@MadMAxJr Which one? LOL
Oh my bad "vertical" as in "up and down" thats rpg.se

It shows that stackRPG is way above the others. What is the quantity representing?

I unchecked all of mine except RPG, I've 2k plus on half a dozen sites :), and 500+ on a few more :)

Is that a rep meter?

3:54 PM
That's the network-wide reputation graph.

yeah, it's in your network profile, (click your RPG.SE profile, click Network Profile, then reputation)

We've been posting them for the past little bit to show that we've all gotten way more points in the recent past than in the years before.

I recall a time when you could ask a question on Stack Overflow and not only would it get an answer, it would still be on the front page by the time you got back there.

heh.

Oh hey, did Worldbuilding actually start up?
Last time I checked there wasn't really a board there yet.

4:09 PM
Enh...
Most of the big questions were covered in the first week.
... They also have a sandbox thread in their meta where they encourage you to shape your question before asking your question.

@DuckTapeAl - Yes, I know. That's why I said you'd have to work it with your DM and the construct angle, as I think the main reason for not being able to tunnel is that yo have to shore as you go when tunneling otherwise it collapses.

See, I don't know that that's the reason you're not allowed to tunnel with that spell. It says in the description that it's for making moats and shaping the contours of the battlefield, which supports the 'you can't make tunnels with this' argument.
My point is that an answer that said "convince your DM to go against a clear statement in the rules" wouldn't get an upvote from me.
Sure, I can get my DM to houserule stuff, but I'd much rather a spell that could possibly be used for an application, than one that specifically can't.

sigh...IM NOT GOING FOR AN ANSWER.
I'm discussing in chat.
you want cheap options, in an area where there isn't a lot of rule precedent. I'm theorizing.

@DuckTapeAl Yeah, Worldbuilding is up and running. Lots of good questions. A few crazy ones. About what you'd expect I guess.

@TimB - And just about anything you want to ask is considered on topic.

4:16 PM
I couldn't find a reason to close the moon made of cheese one :(
but no, we do have quite clearly defined topics - it's just you can ask some really bizarre stuff without leaving those limits

Some of it is borderline XKCD What-If material

yeah, definitely

@TimB - That's one reason I haven't really done anything lately. Everyone seems to want to ask all this outre what if stuff. I mean really, what does blowing up a mountain or a moon with TNT have to do with worldbuilding?

yeah we closed those ones
mostly

"What if we had a US style Senate populated by intelligent bowling balls? What would their impact on society be?"

4:19 PM
@MadMAxJr, sadly, that would be on topic.

Right now Hammmer Proof Armour is an interesting question I think
Permanent settlements on the surface of ice
also interesting
@JohnP Actually that would probably close as too broad. "impact on society" we tend to ask people to be more specific

The senate would like to recognize senator chipped 14 pound Brunswick, a House Ball. You have one minute to address the congregation.

@TimB - You deliberately miss my point. Pretty much any question you can think of can be made on topic. It's just "What wild a## question can I come up with"...
With a few good ones thrown in. I admit I like the hammer proof armor

we do get a certainly element of people asking whacky questions for kicks...and we also get people who have no idea at all about what they are asking (some of the physics/astronomy ones make me cringe for the state of world-wide education)
but we also get a lot of good questions
@JohnP Well I disagree. It's more constrained than you think it is. I can think of several questions right now that would be off topic.
unfortunately we can't constrain to "sensible" questions because there is no common definition....after all there exists a My Little Pony RPG....
someone writing a children's book may well have the moon made out of cheese and then want to use the logical consequences of that
etc

Hah! Cheesy moon would be less dense than normal moon, and would have to orbit at a further distance than normal moon, making tidal forces less extreme and having less of a slowing force on the rotation of the planet

4:29 PM
Hmm. Would the chill of space keep it from getting moldy?

Pretty certain, that and the lack of atmosphere

@DavidWilkins What if the cheese moon was bigger, to make up for the density disparity?

If it's a cheese with gas pockets, like swiss, is there a chance it could develop a crude atmosphere?

@TimB - 2 answers, one of which is "Search for ET crackers" that has 5 upvotes.

We're going to need a hard salami meteor and some crackers.

4:31 PM
Nope, even if the gas from those pockets reached the surface, there's not enough gravity to hold it there

And one guy just repeatedly yammering in comments "It will explode".

@DuckTapeAl An equally massive moon made of chees would be bigger volume wise, and so would take up more of the sky, but it would have the same impact and distance to center of mass as the real moon

Just don't make a moon out of Casu marzu, please.

How much bigger would it be?

Is that the cheese with creepy crawlies in it?
@DuckTapeAl that's a question for Physics.se

4:33 PM
Well, cheese is roughly as dense as water, and rocks are roughly 2-3 times as dense as water, as far a ten seconds of googling tells me.

That is the cheese with maggots in it, yes.

A sphere that contains twice the volume of another sphere has 1.26 times the radius, so a moon made of cheese with the same mass as our current moon would be about 25% bigger in the sky.
Well, 25% wider.
50% bigger total.

Cheese exploding with maggots. No thank you. :)

"How many maggots would live inside a cazu marzu moon, under the position and size conditions similar to the Earth moon?"
Flagged for closure - Reason I WANT TO NEVER THINK ABOUT THAT

whud up gangasta

5:36 PM
I rather dislike interviewing people

5:46 PM
@MadMAxJr please ask that, it would get maths in the answers and everything...

@DuckTapeAl - What about taming a purple worm?

Also requires an adventure and/or DM buy-in.
So it wouldn't be very helpful.
Unless you know of a way that doesn't require actually finding a purple worm.

Hire pech? Or perform a service for a pech tribe and have them dig it out?
(Yes, I'm throwing spaghetti at the wall :p)

What is a pech?
Any solution that involves going out into the world and finding a creature isn't going to be very helpful.

6:02 PM
Pech and svirfneblin are underground dwellers, good tunnelers. And honestly, every suggestion pretty much everyone has had you have rejected with "won't really work".

Yes, because they won't work. :P
The best one so far has been the lyre of building one.

Well, then you're kinda effed. Unless there is something lacking in the description.

Indeed, I am quite effed.
I wouldn't have asked the question if there was a simple, easy answer. :)

Has using underhulks been suggested?
@DuckTapeAl I will admit that I am not familliar with Psionic spells in PF/3.5

6:23 PM
What is an underhulk?

umber methinks

Several burrowing creatures have been suggested, but unless there's a way to summon them using spells or powers, those suggestions don't really help me.

err, yeah that

Also, apparently there is no PF conversion for the umber hulk.

Non-arcane summoning? Hrmmm

2 hours later…
8:19 PM
My research skills are somewhat lacking, have there been any questions about how to create an arcane research lab/practice area? I had a potential arcane character player ask me about how to build such a thing (Kind of like a firing range for spells).
That's a pathfinder umber hulk. You won't find an official one, UH is one of the "reserved" monsters by WotC not covered with the OGL.

Q: Is leaving threatened range triggering an OA determined by the shortest range melee weapon or the longest?

MalaAssume a player with two weapons: a whip and a dagger. A hostile creature stands right next to the player. On the creature's turn, it moves away 5ft. So the creature left the reach of the dagger, but is still in the reach of the whip. Does this movement provoke an opportunity attack? I am int...

I've heard of (and seen) answers in comments, and answers in edits have probably happened, but that's got to be the first time there's been an answer in the title of a question.

lol
thats not an answer in title
merely what I saw as the most pertinent part of his question and a need to put anything in other than reach shenanigans

@JohnP Yes, this is called Product Identity, apparently.

9:02 PM
@IronHeart If WotC truly wanted product identity, they should have chosen a grave robber as their logo.

9:34 PM
Ev'nin'

2 hours later…
11:13 PM
o/ folks

\o/

what's up?

Some stuff! Role playing wise, some Sundered Lands and preparations for Empire LRP, otherwise not much.
How about you?

not a whole lot, really...although wishing that sandboxy fantasy MMOs were a thing :P

11:29 PM
Oh, yep, that would be nice if well done! (Unfortunately, it would be boring if done in the way such things are usually done.) I'd love something with a dynamic world, where it would be amazing to even just watch the world around developing!

fantasy MMOs are dime a dozen
and sandboxy MMOs exist -- see EVE Online for the best known example

Why, then, is a god sandboxy fantasy MMO not a thing?

@Anaphory -- Mabinogi comes the closest from what I've heard -- oddly enough, it's an Eastern fantasy style though -- not to knock on it, but I'd probably find it more confusing than fun
but I suspect most MMO devs have a fear of losing control over their own game, if you will

Somehow, I don't play a lot of computer games, so I haven't played MMOs, just once a tiny amount of MUDs.
How does EVE play?

people call it "spreadsheets in space"...but the combat is more chess-like than anything else -- very cerebral game even when it does get somewhat-fast

11:42 PM
Are there concepts in there that wouldn't work in a fantasy universe?

probably the hardest one to pull off in a fantasy universe is what Eve does to the notion of classes -- in Eve, the role you're performing in the mechanics is determined by what ship you're flying or what service you're using stationside -- not by anything intrinsic to your character

Well, you could do a lot with equipment in fantasy, but in that case, you'd have to contrive a reason why some things are mutually incompatible.
But it definitely makes more sense if it's a natural thing, like “you can only fly one ship”.

there are other things that EVE does suprisingly well -- not many games have an inventory system as scalable as EVE's
