4e has a Vampire class?

I imagine it would be racial hit dice in the previous edition.

@agradine Yes.

That's... strange

1:15 AM
yeah

Not particularly. It's distilling something down to a playable concept.

I was weirded out by that at first too

Which in D&D means class-and-level or a "race."
I mean, it's not that much weirder than other classes, I think.
Your profession is "master your latent vampire powers."

yeah
I made a multiclass vampire
which actually gets almost half of the vampire class features, but you get most of the bad ones and skip some of the good ones
so it kinda balances out

Q: Where can you get the safe and cheap game gold?

hehling01It is easy to buy game gold, but not each site is safe. Do you want to know the safe places to buy game gold? If you know, please kindly tell me!

Lovely. Flagged.

Wow that's quite a bit of heavily processed canned meat

migrates to Arqade

@AlexP Yeah, I mean the more that I think about it the more it makes sense. It's just hard to wrap my head around at first

1:43 AM
BUT GUSY WHEAR CAN U GET TEH GOLD?S???
I WANT 2 BUY A WARHAMMER IN MAI PAHTFINDAR GAEM BUT TEH STOPID GM SEZ NOT UNTIL 3RD LEVEL

1:58 AM
@JohnCraven You need to slip him a $50 when you hand him your Pathfinder Society documents.

OK TANHKS

So, someone who knows PF should take a look at this:

A: How does the overhand chop ability work?

guestOverhand Chop, and the related Backswing ability, both appear on p.108 of the Advanced Player's Guide. They are abilities listed under the Two-Handed Fighter Archetype, and are not feats. Neither has a "Benefit" or "Normal" line. Perhaps some players are thinking these are some old feats with ...

Yes, definitely

Question's got two answers from new users both contradicting what the original ('11) answer said. Makes me think we should at least clarify.

The Paizo PF SRD correlates with what the person says. No benefit/normal lines.

The new one in particular seems to be arguing pretty thoroughly rather than just the usual drive-by "Nu-uh, because <nonsense>" kind of comment that rules questions sometimes get.

> Overhand Chop (Ex): At 3rd level, when a two-handed fighter makes a single attack (with the attack action or a charge) with a two-handed weapon, he adds double his Strength bonus on damage rolls. This ability replaces armor training 1.
(And that's it.)
Unrelated, I came across a very dated word.

4:29 AM
@JonathanHobbs Tee-hee.

Mornin'

@Magician Morning!

> In theory, the Sun Knight is kind, merciful and will never abandon a life. He always smiles and praises the Light God in every sentence; he doesn't drink or swear; he is pure-minded. In practice... not so much - he's a closet pervert, has a ridiculously high tolerance for liquor and a large swearing vocabulary.
I am not sure why this amuses me so.

Heh
So, I've been thinking of getting a proper domain for my blog (and other stuff). How does GoblinTavern . net sound? With the overall site being called "Drunken Goblin Tavern", after a franchise in my setting, because yay, in-jokes. DrunkenGoblin is sort of taken, there's a .co.uk and a blog by that name.

That might produce confusion.
@qwertyk31 [wave] Hi!

@BESW That is my concern. I hope it won't be too bad, as I don't really have other good names in mind.

thegoblindiceblog.net

hahahhaha
I realise that is the most memetic thing I've done, but I don't want it to be THE thing I've done :)

6:13 AM
I know, I'm teasing.
And it's only memetic for people who've met me.
I'd suggest using something about yourself, rather than your content, to avoid narrowing possible topics.

@BESW I view it as an umbrella name, hence .net. There'll be a blog, a setting wiki (not that anyone but my players would care), and potentially games I write, all in different sub-sites.
So it's not the blog name per se.

What about goblintavernfranchise.net?

3 words url, seems excessive
otherwise it would totally have been drunkengoblintavern.net

does the tavern have an in-universe motto?

dgt.net is taken, but gtf.net is not...

6:22 AM
The words are more memorable than the acronym though

or a mascot?

@agradine it has an in-universe goblin, whom people get drunk all the time despite owner's wishes. Not sure how that scales with it being a franchise yet, it's entirely possible new prospective owners go out looking for suitable goblins.

@agradine "We squeeze only the finest inebriated goblins to make our ale."

@JonathanHobbs Yeah, definitely.

I think the problem is that everybody makes goblin jokes, if they aren't making gnome jokes.

6:26 AM
That is true. Unfortunately, any other name I come up with is too full of misplaced pathos.

misplacedpathos.net

....

@BESW [snigger]

wheresmypathos.net
Maybe, for the sake of unique branding, you could modify the in-joke.
drunkenyuan-ti.net

yuan-ti are D&D-specific :P

6:31 AM
soberdwarf.net?

certainly unique

Heck, sobergoblin.net might work.
[shrug] I'm running dry.

Well, ok, if I were to move away from drunken goblins, it'd be nice to get my name there, i.e. Magician. But pathos!

magicpathos.net

goblintavern sounds fine if you want to keep the Drunken Goblin Tavern name

6:34 AM
I'm fine with renaming the blog into Magician's Musings, cause alliteration is always a*musing*, but don't think that's a good name for the whole website.

@JonathanHobbs If the site is called "Drunken Goblin Tavern," then he'll likely get people going to drunkengoblin.net instead of goblintavern.net.
Because that is also an Actual Site.
@Magician What's wrong with magbonch.net?
A website address doesn't have to mean anything so long as it's reasonably memorable. Look at xkcd.

@BESW Ugh. "Magbonch" is an ungainly combination of "Magician" and a part of my surname, which I use as a username because both of those parts are always taken. I've kinda grown to hate it.

afk a bit

On the subject of fantasy tavern names, "Cockatrice & Bull".

@Magician I get it :D

6:43 AM
My very first campaign, one of my players pulled up a "random fantasy name generator" website and rolled a tavern name.
"The Mummy's Left Nipple" has haunted my games ever since.

...

@BESW yeah,... you need help

Most of my games also have a "<color> Peacock Inn" and a "Horned King" bar/tavern/dive.
magicianmyths.net

hrm

Alternately, come up with another word for "drunken."

6:47 AM
magiciantales.net, to make another reference to the origin of the nickname that no one will get

saucedgoblin.net
soakedgoblin.net

@BESW you're right that there're too many goblin jokes out there, though. There's a "drunken goblin" small rpg publisher, it seems
Which just makes it a terrible idea, if I ever want to do something like that, and I do.

pickledimp.net

@BESW That sounds like a huge bottle of spirits with an actual imp inside.

@Magician And now you have a logo.

Aw.
marinatedfairy.net?
It has internal assonance!

That's a jam.
Bah. Names are hard.
Thanks for input, I'll be pondering it further.

magusoeuvre.net
The address no one can spell or pronounce.

hahaha

Good luck.

6:55 AM
A few years ago, I almost registered something like Tesseract Studio. Tagline would have been "bringing extra dimension to your entertainment". See, pathos.

I'm always happy to give you more bad ideas.
...I'm not sure your definition of pathos matches mine.

It's a very broad definition :P
Pretentiousness might be a better fit.
It's all alephs and tesseracts and eschaton in my head.

moebiusoeuvre.net

That's a very one-sided dish.

There's your tagline: something about only focusing on your own opinions.

Um. That Gnome Stew RSS link up there? Seems to be written by a guy who never paid much attention to 4e.
He's talking like bullywugs aren't in 4e, and that it's a 2e and 3.x thing to customize monsters.

7:18 AM
Yeah, Hated that blog post.
Hi, btw.

hi.

sometimes I miss 4e monster customization
I've tried my best to port a lot of that design philosophy to 3.5, and have had mixed success

Sounds difficult.

at times. some port over fairly well
minions are a pretty easy placement and I have always loved the little bastards
generally i've had the most success when I've tossed 3.X's rules and expectations for balance out the window
Then I just toss on whatever abilities I feel are appropriate. Trips, grapples and bull rushes have been my go-to abilities
Poison too
It's when I deal with spellcasters that I get a little bogged down
Fortunately most of my self-designed monsters are illithid-created monstrosities and psionics are much easier to deal with

heh.
I'd be inclined to just go along with 4e even further and make NPC casting totally its own thing.

7:30 AM
I've been tempted
I had a child black dragon encounter that I ran much more like a 4e dragon than a 3e

Ooh.
I found that dragons in 4e were better when split into minibosses.

Oh?

My dragons were a set of connected solos that traveled together as a unit and had unique synergies.
So you'd have head, body, wings, claws, and tail all as separate monsters.
Each of them got a turn in the initiative count.

Ooooh

If you defeated the head, wings, claws, or tail, that body part dropped out of the initiative count.
And the body takes damage equal to that body part's bloodied value.
(I set up the maths so that taking out all the body parts would kill the body automatically.)

7:35 AM
Nifty

The body doesn't have an attack of its own, but it can shift conditions from another body part to itself as an action on its turn. When you take out another body part, the body does an AoE "gore" acid attack.
The head can't be attacked unless you have combat advantage against the head or the body.
This is just one dragon build--I did two or three different ones depending on how I wanted it to go.
But you get the idea: multiple body parts with their own simple turns, and some very strong synergy between them, forcing the party to make interesting choices about targeting.
Hit the wings to keep it from flying? Hit the tail to stop the AoE knockback attacks? Focus on the head to stop the breath weapon?
Or focus on the body? It'll kill the dragon faster --but you'll have all the body part attacks to deal with in the meantime.
See, the problem with boss-level solos in 4e is that they need to do too much.
If you're fighting just a dragon, he's screwed because you can focus all your debuffs and damage on him and he's just one guy. He gets two turns per round if he's really badass, and a handful of triggered actions.
But compared to a party of five, he's outclassed.

yeah

So, we split him up. Give him five turns each round, but keep them simple so the GM can track them.

I learned that 3.X is equally horrible at solo encounters recently when my 6th level Gaunt got massacred by my 3rd level PCs

Now debuffs only target part of the dragon, so the rest of him is still dangerous.

7:42 AM
That's a really excellent idea and one I will be plagiarizing with great joy

I lifted it from @Magician's Patient Two concept.
My dragon adaptation is significantly modified, but still recognizable as inspired by his brainstorm.
During the last 2/3 of my 4e campaign, I got bored and was having trouble doing interesting things for my players.
So I started researching "hacks" and experimenting with synergies.
I ran an encounter that had random jumping from one time to another, for example.
And a megasession with a bowl of candy labeled "DOOM" in the middle of the table. Anyone was free to eat from the bowl. Candy could be taken to get bonuses and re-rolls, too.
But obviously when the bowl was empty, something bad was going to happen.
I also ran a session where the minions you killed in the first encounter turned into currency you could spend later on, for different effects depending on the kind of minion it was.
I had a mind flayer who could teleport next to anyone who was dealt psychic damage, 1/turn as a free action... and he had a priest with a room-wide AoE that dealt minimal psychic damage to you at the start of your turn.
So everyone had the mind flayer in their face at the start of their turn.
It maximized his presence on the battlefield and made him seem like a significant threat, while actually it made it easier for the melee-heavy party to get their punches on him.

lol
and if anyone was using a shardmind, they would have got to feel more awesome for it
no one was, but still

Yeah, I'd kind of expected someone to blow a resistance cooldown.

who had any?
pretty sure I didn't

I can't remember.

7:55 AM
or I had used it earlier

I may have designed it with Bharash in mind, before he suddenly vanished.

either way
that might be it

Or someone may have blown it early.

we did have Ben doing some AoE heals
so maybe the point was not so much that damage wasn't done as that the damage itself went away, but only after it let MF teleport

I did have some encounters around that time which were designed with characters in mind who didn't actually show up that day.
It was during The Great Time of Attendance Flux.
@agradine If you want to see my dragon stats, I can upload some of them to Gdocs.

8:06 AM
I would be

yeah, we rarely had/have no attendance issues

dozed off there, think its time for bed

I'll put them up a bit later.
Got some client downloads that should be starting soon.

but yeah, i'd definitely like to check them out. I'm getting some fun ideas
g'night!

8:24 AM
@BESW Hahaha, Doom Candy! So delicious. My players have stopped eating snacks I bring to the game after that. They still triple check whether it's safe.

heh.
It was fun for a one-off.
@agradine Zebukiel's Body, Wings, Tail, and Head.

3 hours later…
ugh
not working
that one link,... for some reason

?

even though I sent it to you
,....

It's working for me...

it isn't interwebs either
lol,.... how silly is this?
oh,... I think this cable keeps getting unplugged
mm no that isn't it
can't get on the site at all
yeah,.. I had to restart the laptop
the internet cable here is wonky
normally at home I use wireless

11:22 AM
@BESW this is glorious XD

it is indeed
I like everything about how it was executed

I kinda dislike that it feels the GM was just forcing a lot of rolls until he got the result he wanted. Classic goblin dice misapplication.
But assuming that's okay for everybody...

well

@BESW it's not a misapplication in D&D really

technically, there were 3, and the GM called the last one before the roll

11:25 AM
I'm not sure how you'd do it better

that is not exactly brutal in D&D as I understand it
and the PC was the one who started it
your GM style is not exactly far from this
from my perspective, punishment only came from a bad PC decision, and there were even saves

Yeah, it's the way D&D works.

albeit 3 bad saves
and by bad saves, I mean that even saving didn't do anything, because it was forced 2 more times after the 1st
that's the only particularly brutal thing

11:47 AM
anyway, most of what I mean is that that comic is very entertaining
but I think there is also something to be said for a little realism in there too
not real,.... realism, but a realistic way that D&D actually does end up working like
not so sure talking to yourself for 2 minutes with no real external factors can turn you completely bonkers

possibly.

then again
I never went insane, to my knowledge
so I would not know for sure on that one
XD

A Story About 'Magic' (and More Magic)

Hello.

Hi!
Apparently someone has created a conveniently labelled & summarised map of Pathfinder's Golarion:

403 Forbidden, fool.
@JonathanHobbs Hee, I've seen that one before.

12:25 PM
@BESW Oh, well then:
Warning: Guaranteed to offend somebody somewhere.

@JonathanHobbs lol
what is that supposed to be

@JonathanHobbs I love it.

Steampunk Land must be sad to find itself sandwiched between Wizards and Also Wizards.

@InbarRose Golarion, from Pathfinder! Summarised and labelled.

I never heard of the place.

12:28 PM
God Rock sounds like a Christian metal genre.

I specifically love "nobodygivesafuckia"
this map is not like your map
I don't get it.
How are those the same map?

@InbarRose Hotlinky no likey.

the link still works.

@InbarRose It's a zoom-in on the middle of your link.

@JonathanHobbs man, I want a poster print of that...
and I don't even play PF

12:35 PM
@waxeagle me neither (not in Golarion, at least), but now I would like to !

and my wife would never let me put that up...

What's the real name of "vive la révolution" ?

speaking of which, anyone know where I could find a 12x48 poster frame?

Your local hardware/frame store?

@InbarRose probably

@waxeagle College campuses usually sell really cheap poster frames, especially toward the start of the academic year.

Different regions of the world

You might see if there's an Internet equivalent.

Orrr different settings? Not sure now

They have some funny place names

12:37 PM
@JonathanHobbs No, your link is just a close-up of the middle of his link.

"Nex" "Geb"

See the sea between Avistan and Garund?

@BESW So it is! I couldn't identify it

That's where The God Rock/The Isle of Kortos is.

On an unrelated note
How do you all feel about sheep?
(this person's entire archive is gorgeous. In comparable ways.)

12:42 PM
reason I asked about the poster frame: nerds-versus-aliens.myshopify.com/products/…
that was my b-day present from the missus :)

@waxeagle Oh wow x) Lucky you

Shiny.

@JonathanHobbs Yeah, I Know those vids. He has awesome stuff.

Since it's "link random stuff" time in the chat, do you want the 1932 exploitation meme that everybody knows because Simpsons homaged it, or the Nightmare Before Christmas cover PMV?

Morning

12:54 PM
Hey.

@BESW I'm unfamiliar with either
and on the linking random stuff.:
Bones! Go buy some

And VoicePlay's This is Halloween as a PMV.
@waxeagle But I don't miniature.

@BESW heh, at the moment nether do I :)

Ah and since we were talking about apple cutie marks here yesterday: fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/p526x296/…

Tweets to Campaign By is suspicious of this coincidence.
Citizens of Maxbass hope it was only happenstance that a carload of coffins arrived at the same time the hospital was opened there. ND1909

1:08 PM
Well....
It makes sense!

good morning everyone

@JoshuaAslanSmith good morning

Hey.

Hiya!

What size is Large in PF/3.5 ? 10 feet ?

@JonathanHobbs Thanks
I guess ravnican loxodons will be Medium, then

1:34 PM
@Trajan You could model their stats over Loxos

@Trajan It's not strict; dwarves should really be Small, but they're "stocky" enough to be Medium.
And Minotaurs aren't ten feet tall, but they're Large.

@BESW because ahem they have a wide stance

And then there are things like the half-ogre who gets to be treated as if he were one size larger for most beneficial effects but not for more negative ones.

@BESW Goliaths also are

@BESW Is there any inherent bonus to being Large in PF ? there were in 3.5
@Zachiel which are ?

1:39 PM
@Trajan They have a smaller bonus to combat maneuvers. I don't know about reach.
@Trajan Humanoid elephant people with two trunks
(Sorry for the edit, I misunderstood which sentence of mine you were referring to)

@Trajan This table seems to cover most of it.

Actually @JonathanHobbs 's link seems to cover the question
@BESW Yes, it seems so.

How similar is 3.5 and pathfinder? I have a buddy who is running a pathfinder.
How quickly could I learn the game?

It looks very similar, and is basically the same engine.
But you'll get tripped up by a lot of little hiccoughs.
They're similar enough that someone familiar with both can use material from one in the other without much trouble.

@Aaron I'd say you could play right away but should be very careful about every tiny bits of rule you're used to

1:49 PM
Ok. Are there any major differences that I should watch for?

grappling

Skill point assignment got fiddled with in baffling ways that don't ultimately make much difference.

I don't use that much in 3.5
@BESW Such as? I am a big skill user so that affects me.

also, I'm under the impression that multiclassing is less useful in PF that it was in 3.5

A large portion of the combat maneuvers people generally don't use a lot (like grappling) go re-written to use "CMB" as single check type.

1:51 PM
@Aaron class skill got a free +3, but non-class skill costs 1 skill point rather than 2
and level 1 get only Int + class bonus, not multiplied
(this is "balanced" by the +3 for class skill)

@Trajan So every level class skills gets a +3?

yes

@Trajan I don't think he asked what you think he asked.

As I understand it, the first time you put a point into a class skill, you get a free +3 bonus to that skill.

1:53 PM
@BESW Not really. If you have ever spent a skill rank (even before that skill became a class skill) you get the +3

@BESW Yes, you're right, I forgot to mention it. The +3 comes only when you spend at least 1 point in the skill

@Trajan Again, when you have 1 point spent. It does not matter when you did it, you just need to have at least one rank and the skill be a class skill for any of your classes.

The +3 compensates for the "level +3" cap on skills being dropped to a "# of HD" cap.

@Zachiel Thank you this is very useful.

@Zachiel true.
