@BrianBallsunStanton I'll read that paper at some point....
And we shall wait to see how the scene unfolds

Q: Dispensing meaningful treasure that's not magical

Zachary YatesSo I've got a campaign where one of the characters severely distrusts magical items. The party level is 6+, and it seems difficult to figure out a way to compensate this character in non-magical treasure (as the challenge ratings of the encounters are getting up there). What are some alternativ...

wow 6 questions already today...

I have one to pose later

6:17 PM
hmm need 85 more rep..not sure if I'll make it today...

6:31 PM
Why?

@Pureferret rep cap :). haven't gotten to it here yet

Ah!

(actually I've only hit it on MSO, and that was my first day there)
oh I got on on C.SE too :)

Cool
Just checked it out
Awesome

Sounds like he really wants wizards to neuter the tactical aspect of the game in 5e...

6:42 PM
@waxeagle everyone wants something different

@CRoss yeah...I'm sort of worried they will try to please everyone and end up with no one really happy...

@waxeagle shrugs little to early to be worrying

@CRoss true, I guess we need to see some prelims and betas first...

@waxeagle or some priorities ;-)

Wow. I'm not sure what this guy wants is in line with even a significant number of fans....

6:45 PM
@MadMAxJr I know a lot of people who would disagree

j is the only point I can really get behind completely...and even then

I rather like my feats ...

This reminds me of my 2nd Ed GM. "They designed this game wrong, so here is my 20 page handout of how I fixed it."

@MadMAxJr lol

@MadMAxJr I try really hard not to do that
the only thing I do is conversions (Eberron 3.5 to Pathfinder in my case)

6:48 PM
I've found that "If the mechanic homerule can't fit in a paragraph, it's probably too much"

For any given mechanic, solve for the variable of fun.

I'm not sure he wants to play D&D....

Bingo. That's what I was getting at, Ferret.

I know
it's just....

At what point do you stop hammering something into what you wanted it to be and use an alternative?

6:49 PM
"Man this dread game owuld be great if only it wasn't for this jenga tower"

Jin
OH BTW

When I pick up a game system, I generally concede that the designers intent may vary from what I want, so I will have to take it with a grain of salt that some things work differently than I may like.
Hello Mr.Graphic Designer. What's up?

Jin
if you guys have game papers(with sketches on them), feel free to send the scans to me. I may use them as textures etc. jin@stackexchange.com

" I still suspect it will more closely resemble the mathematical-madness of Third Edition (or Pathfinder - which is basically the same game in my eyes)" Yes it is the same more or less...that's the point

Augh, you ask for this /after/ I cleaned out my file case. Timing!

6:51 PM
@Jin you mean like notes and character sheets?

@BrianBallsunStanton has a paper about games...

Jin
sure. anything is fine

Jin
also for the logo, i most likely will go with a d20

@Pureferret you're being silly
@Jin it's an academic paper, not... what you're asking about.

6:51 PM
@BrianBallsunStanton it is a paper isn't it :p

but I may have access to sketches.

I has no sketches

if I had some they wouldn't be worth the paper they were sketched on /can't draw...

From the new guy, Russell "I understand much better now, this community is great, I'll be here again for sure!"
SUCCESS!

@Pureferret good job. I hope my answer didn't turn him off...

6:54 PM
Alright, we got through correcting someone without an account deletion this time.

I know someone who does those sorts of sketches....

Classy...

Jin
it can be rough too.

mmm, speaking of which, there are some nice automatic dungeon generators out there

6:55 PM
I wish I had a decent scanner.

Jin
@MadMAxJr you can take pics of them with your phone

I personally recommend davesmapper.com for mapping.

I don't think I have any leftover sketches from my works, uf.

might take a pic next time we have a session with a battle mat :)

Sadly there's been a six month delay in updates on that tool, but the author had a very good reason.

6:57 PM
ooooh, I've got pictures of battle mats

Jin
i don't have any ideas about what the 404/captcha/error page images should be yet..

mmmm
battle-mats could work, actually

Jin
for the captcha page, i normally use a non-human figure, typically a robot of some kind

@BrianBallsunStanton yeah get people to photo their battle mats in progress :)

Jin
but it could be a creature..

6:58 PM
Golem.
HELLO FELLOW CONSTRUCT

@Jin there is a 4e race called warforged....

Golem
Agreed

oooh, I've got a nice dice tower, do you need one?

but actually mad max has a great idea in goelm

Warforged or golem?

Jin
6:58 PM

all of the above

Golem is generic enough.

Jin
^ like that?

Ooooh, he's neat looking.

mmm, more steampunky with armature and glow

but yeah, I can send a nice dicetower if you want one

Does that one work in here...... no.

Jin
ideally, it'd be cool to use a group of non-human figures together, so we can be more genre inclusive..

Flesh / Iron / Clay / Stone golems.

Jin
7:00 PM
i love this photo..

Ha ha

Iron Golem, Generic SW astromech, Steam Punk construct (war forged or similar) and a couple of other genre constructs in a Marvel Heroes style...

An eldritch horror or two?

@Jin wow ...

Well.. captcha messages do occasionally seem like eldritch horror messages.

7:02 PM
ooooh, captcha ...

DMAC is a great artist btw
he did my profile image

@jin 3 images from my phone
mmm

Q: Site design: 404/captcha/error page images

JinI'll be presenting community with the final design of rpg.se very soon. Meanwhile, I need some ideas for the error, captcha and 404 page images. For the captcha image, I normally use a non-human figure and keep it light hearted. For the this site's catpcha image, I'm thinking about using a grou...

do you care about lighting?

Jin
made the post, feel free to add your ideas there.

7:05 PM
or just photos to give you an idea?

Jin
@BrianBallsunStanton are you talking about the sketches?

yeah. Are they for publication or are they for inspiration?

Jin
@BrianBallsunStanton both. i'll see if i can work it as a faint background noise for the site

cool, then the ones I sent you should serve both. But they're "real" shots so -- not particularly well lit.
I'll see if i can't get permission to photograph my friend's city-sketches
mmm, do you care about character portraits?

Jin
@BrianBallsunStanton don't worry about the lighting quality. they'll be post processed to hell anyway :)

7:08 PM
right :)
given that I commissioned this: thecybil.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d2jkkcr
have fun with that.

Jin
btw, the artist whom I contracted to do the header graphic is conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=199450

oh very nice.

I can point you at some other artists if you need them
I quite like the stylized work that BKM did for Ars Magica
but wow, those are quite impressive

Jin
i love concepart.org, been a fan forever. however i feel like they're at a renovate or die type of phase...
they're still using bloated bulletin system, the site is so slow. there's so much rich gems on the site though, hard to explore now

7:12 PM
oof

Very nice

Lovely
I think we need a tarrasque in the header as well....

I say Umber Hulk. You can never have enough Umber Hulks

Jin
@BrianBallsunStanton got your email. thanks! also feel free to email me other artists you'd recommend. I think down the road we may need more art work for RPG.se promotional materials

Jin
7:15 PM
I wish I could draw or paint well...

oooh
::sigh:: those are the two artists I know/have commuicated with in this oeuvre... I know others of course.

Q: How can I play dumb?

PureferretI have a half-ogre character at my local larp group, and one of the roleplay-enforced restrictions for half-ogres is that they have low intelligence. I often find myself biting my tongue not to say 'smart' witty things, or reason with other to work out plot. Most of the time I just come across as...

@Pureferret is there are specific LARP system you guys use? Could you tag your questions with it? I've noticed some of the questions come at it from a variety of system perspectives...(might have to hit meta to determine if this is necessary)

It's a unique larp system only we play with, which is why I've left them system-tagless and this one system agnostic
We might need new tags to distinguish between different larp styles

@Pureferret k thats kind of what I thought.
trying to figure out how to give more context to questions with tags...style may have to be the ticket...

7:24 PM
I'm not very familiar with them though
I think all styles of larp in the UK are the same

@Pureferret me neither...just noticed that there are obviously several different types from reading your questions and the answers you were getting

Yeah I am too

Ooh, Atomic Robo RPG?

@GraceNote ooh :). I have the AR comic book from free comic book day last year..need to actually read that...speaking of which...I need to make time to re-read 8-bit

7:28 PM
8-Bit was my first webcomic.

@GraceNote mine too...i still haven't read ita ll the way through, I quit at about 1200 or so...

It's one of the only strips that I can say I was a stalwart follower of.

@TheOracle i've made my suggestions

The Oracle is a bot.

Jin
@MadMAxJr so we have you believe...

7:40 PM
@MadMAxJr gnomes, man, gnomes
it's gnomes at a IBM Terminal attached to an AS400

Correction, TheOracle is several unpaid interns deep beneath wherever StackExchange is headquartered...

@MadMAxJr oooh, in the ancient NYC underground :-)
and "unpaid interns"

Q: What different styles of LARP combat exist?

PureferretI've been seeing a lot of variety in the answer to my questions about LARP, some mentioning NERO and Amtgard. Others saying things about Light-touch and lightest touch. Some conflicted ideas about contact (I'm sure NERO was described as both contact and non-contact). What are the different style...

@MadMAxJr only sometimes

Yes, other times they've escaped.

8:03 PM
That's my days worth of questions done

@Pureferret lol...watch your pacing :P there is a q/month cap :)

I don't mind that
:p

Q: What do I need to change about Call of Cthulhu to set it in the 60s?

PureferretI am in the process of planning a CoC game (or Trail of... I've not picked up a copy but it looks interesting) set a long time after the events of the Whisperer in the Darkness. To do so, I wanted to set the game in the 60s, but I'm not sure how the game will run with cars, social movement, wides...

Post-WW2 eldritch horror? Hmmmm.
The weapon options are certainly better.

which I see as an issue....

8:11 PM
I believe there was a setting called Weird War that covered Cthulthu type mythos inside WW2.
The Germans were fiddling with devils and werewolves and such.

Like hellboy?

8:25 PM
I think it's kind of like that.
I only got to play once.
We were american paratroops and we encountered machine gremlins.
They did strange things to allied and german armor.

Weird
I don't really want excess combat

@MadMAxJr Did they pour out 10d100 killer bees?

That would be awesome
10d100
Come on, come on!

I was perusing one of the random links from the ticker feed. The blog seemed to have a lot of things that end with "10d100 killer bees"

@GraceNote do you know if we could get better dice support for chat?
plus a way to store charactersheets?

8:38 PM
I do not know, no

The dice roller was a cute touch, but I think it was a dev having fun with his spare time.
1d20

@GraceNote we really need d10 and d4 support though...
d4
d10
d20

8:47 PM

5d6

He can play Yahtzee though!

At most I can just suggest poking out a Meta question.

Though this makes me curious if the B&CG chats have this fella. They might like him.

8:48 PM
@MadMAxJr AFAIK its RPG.SE only...but I don't chat there...

If they do, they probably invite him to all the parties...

Do you think they stole our d4 and d10?

d12

8:48 PM
6

d12

Wow, we have d12 but no d4? Scandalous.

weird

I'm amused we get the unloved d12, but not the d4.

8:49 PM
Yeah

@GraceNote seriously

I love the d12...
4d12

9
6

@Pureferret I love it so much my fighter wields a fullblade :)

Ever since 3.5 I think he's been replaced with 2d6.

8:49 PM
:D

In most cases.

@waxeagle I'm basing a system I'm designing on them

@MadMAxJr Except for the barbarian. HD, greataxe, etc.

@MadMAxJr 4e has a few weapons that use a 12, Exe axe, Fullblade,...

8:51 PM
4E Does? Then I'm just blind to it because I'm generally a rogue. If it's bigger than a d8, we're generally awestruck.

@MadMAxJr lol. Fullblade :) (1d12, high crit, superior 2 handed heavy blade)
like +16 to hit (+2 weapon, +3 prof) at L9...

Aweomse
the compendium brings up a few hits, but I have no idea what they are
Moon Touched?

I should amend my last statement.. In my old group, if you're a rogue and it's bigger than a d8, we just assume you're cheating.

@Pureferret ? magic weapon taht uses d12 as a crit die?
@MadMAxJr this is true.
only exception is a bugbear rogues :)
and those aren't really fair

It's a power (?)

8:54 PM
Neither is the Tarrasque when you give it class levels.

Or a feat
Then there the Urgosh
1d12 on one end, 1d6 on the other
1d6 1d12

8

@Pureferret channel divinity power

How does it use a d12?

4d6

8:55 PM

4df
... still no fudge dice...

at the stat of each of your turns roll a d8 (L11 d10, L21 d12). If the roll is odd do x, if even do y.

Fudge dice... those are all + and - right?

@MadMAxJr yes
my roll was a -1

odd regain die roll temp even regain actual hp...

8:57 PM
We had a single set of those at our store. Never sold when I worked there from 2002 to 2007.

I don't know what games use them....

fate and fudge
so, off the top of my head: dresden files rpg, spirit of the century, and there's one other i can't remember the name
diaspora!
that's it

9:36 PM
Any notebook aficionados in the audience? I'm looking to trade my big spiral bound school notebook up to something a little bit better, but I'm having trouble finding just the thing.

Moleskin book?

Looked at those.
They look nice, but I kind of want detachable pages.
For note passing, maps, etc.

I think my "detachable paper" needs have been mostly solved by "engineering office stationary"

Engineering office stationary?

It's a paper pad with detachable sheets that's gridded. Not sketchbook quality paper, but able to withstand a lot and worked great for some runework I was doing a couple months ago.
I... may have nabbed it from my previous employment, but in my defense, half of it was already consumed by my work at the time anyway.

9:41 PM
:)
Anywhere online I can get a look at it?

I'd look up "engineering pads"
Though possibly with more words in there if that doesn't work.

I'd kind of like something smaller than 8.5x11. More like 5x8.5 ish.

Should be able to find something to those specs, though I find those a bit limiting but I like a lot of space when I jot or scribble

One of the problems with the existing notebook is that it's hard to maneuver away from a desk/table...

Carrying a thick item tends to help in that matter.

9:46 PM
Well, I'm mostly writing outlines or stats with it (not sketching, for example).
I'm trying to get it to the point where I can carry it as an incidental item, like a novel.

I do more sketching but I use my pad more for design work, admittedly

I use mine for session notes and combat tracking, with a bit of mapping thrown in.
So I don't want it too small... But a bit smaller than what I have seems necessary.

I had a spiral notebook that had lined paper on the front and grids on the back.

At sessions I usually just have a couple sheets of paper, which is probably sub-optimal, heh. Combat tracking stuff, though, I always create special papers for those.
Although coming up with the initiative deck idea really saved a whole lot of paper management for initiative checks.

Yeah, but the system I'm using doesn't work well with an initiative deck :)
@MadMaxJr Trying to get away from the spiral binding. It's murder on books, and starts to eat the notebook itself after awhile.
(and yes, I am kind of ridiculously picky when I've stewed over something too long)

9:51 PM
@AceCalhoon There's always fudging it. Figuring exact numbers was always funky anyway - I like the freedom, plus it opened up an amusing avenue for my next meet.
@AceCalhoon I'm not a fan of spiral much, either, though one of my best pads is a spiral.

There's also using a small whiteboard.
For things like init trackers.

You can't shuffle a whiteboard

Hmm... Working out a deck-type system might help me with some issues, actually. But that's kind of tangential...
The notebook I have is adequate for combat tracking. It's the notes that go with it (and between-session planning) where it's failing.

You might consider multiple books, possibly. It may sound bulky but I find it helps in certain matters.

Mmm... Maybe.
I'll have to look into a few more things. Thank you both for your input :)

9:58 PM
No problem! I need a new surface myself but I think I have some drawing pads anyway that I should get to work on.

Now I want to play A Hundred Blank White Cards again....
The game where you have 100 blank notecards and pens. Make up the game cards as you go. Standard Flux rule to begin. Draw one, play one. On completion, discard half the deck, put in 50 blanks, repeat.

Oo, neat. That sounds kind of fun.

The first popular house rule is banning cards along the lines of "I win."

Yeah, that seems like it's kind of a necessity (either explicit or implicit).

For advanced player groups, a card that declares a win must evaluate four things or more to determine the win.

10:13 PM
More and more it feels like @jadasc is someone I'd like to roleplay with

We went as far as to use most of Fluxx's base rules 'Keepers' stay in front of you, 'goals' are win condition cards that stay in play. 'Actions' resolve then go to a discard.
At Magfest I got to observe a wonderful card game called "We didn't playtest this game."
I am corrected, 'We didn't playtest this at all'
and the expansion 'we didn't playtest this either'

I've heard of it
do go on

10:32 PM
Not much to say there really.

Fair enough

It's a poorly designed game that is FUN about how poorly it is designed.

just 65 more until I reach my rep cap :D

@Pureferret Do people ever run/play in chat RPG sessions here?

no
cos it sucks
but they could if we had better dice support and stuff

10:39 PM
The back room is used as a gathering space for some games.
I believe there's a group that plays mouseguard now and then but they gather there, then play elsewhere.

1 hour later…
11:54 PM
End of shift. Goodnight RPG.SE
