From 2 years ago
Pair of very senior doggos

13 hours later…
@JourneymanGeek very adorable doggos
@AllisonC the other doggo was 13
How old do they usually get? (Dogs aren't a strong knowledge spot for me)
@AllisonC well depends
but small breeds are 12-18 or 19
WIki says mini schauzers live till 12-13
Gotcha, similar range to cats then
15:29
Ash was 16, and there was this old feller who was 19
extreme cases are about 30 :D
Double wow! :D
@AllisonC well, the old feller was blind, deaf, had to be carried around ...
Ash had failing kidneys, and was kinda creaky but he was active till the end.
We mostly had dogs that could also work when I was growing up (minus the basset hound, who was picked as "kid friendly"), medium-size breeds and mixes
@JourneymanGeek that's awesome
15:31
Parents didn't want a dog :D
still don't
My parents are too determined to get dogs
They're both mid-late 70s but got a springer spaniel puppy when their lab passed, and are talking about another puppy when the cocker spaniel passes
I literally get depressed if I don't see dogs for more than a week
But they didn't train the springer (who then attacked my dad because of the poor training) and they won't train the new puppy either if they get one
the two pups downstairs are adorable and one's super friendly in the "I AM YOUR QUEEN! I DEMAND PETS!"
I'm trying to convince them "adopt an adult dog from a shelter please"
15:32
@AllisonC ah, Ash had a good trainer
@JourneymanGeek I love those kinds of dogs!
@JourneymanGeek I'm sure Jeb had a good trainer, he just didn't have pet parents who followed through on the trainer's advice and expected the trainer to work miracles
@AllisonC I'm currently mildly crushing on a westie pup at a local petshop but I can't afford it
@AllisonC ah, uh
we just talk to dogs
Thankfully the attack incident made them get a little more serious about some of the training, particularly around the aggressiveness he'd been showing
I've no idea what formal training is
(ash trained with my dad and he thought I got adopted from the airport)
I don't know what kind they were getting, but I do know consistency is required. I'd lightly train our dogs growing up (sit, stay, speak, shake, etc) which got them to follow instructions pretty well in general
15:35
ah
so
My dad's friends cousin trains working/attack dogs
The main issue is that Jeb has an aggressive/resource guarding issue that they refused to address, just brushing it off even when he was snapping at other people. It took an emergency room trip to get them to take it seriously.
or used to? not sure after 15 years
My housemate's friend does the same thing, she works with training guard and police (K9) dogs
(also awesome cause ash was super chill with bigger dogs)
That's always good!
We had a dalmatian when I was growing up, those can be quite aggressive in a guard dog kind of way. Couldn't entirely be trained out, but he learned quickly who was "permitted" and would be permanently fine with them.
15:38
ah
my uncle's GSD is...
a total softie
So the electric meter reader was fine, but when they sent out a substitute without warning, he got snapped at (and admitted it was his own fault because a lot of farm dogs have guard tendencies)
My other housemate's GSDs are pretty soft too, one's also anxious but they do love pets once they know you
@AllisonC ah, that doggo is...
hip height, kinda huge,and plush furred so looks even bigger
my main danger is the slobber :D
Alpha (the dalmatian) wasn't particularly a softie, but he'd respect you if he knew you were allowed, and absolutely run you off to the point of attacking if he thought he needed to if he thought you weren't
@AllisonC ah, I always ask the owner (if I don't know the dog) and greet the dog from a safe distance by name
He killed my dad's gander after too many attacks on us kids by that damn bird, so my dad wasn't a fan
15:40
I've never been bitten unless I tried to get my dog out of a fight
@JourneymanGeek I always do the same, I usually run into dogs at the vet or pet food stores, if they approach and look like they want pets I'll ask permission and let them sniff me first
I've only been bitten once and it was my own damn fault so I never held it against that dog (I scared him and I knew better)
Well generally with a few exceptions, if you get bitten, its your own damned fault :D
Kind of like with that substitute meter reader, he knew damn well he shouldn't just get out of the truck without making sure the dogs were secured or friendly, he only blamed himself
He was generally a great dog, but he also really taught me that dalmatians aren't necessarily the best pets :D He had a whole farm to run on and was never leashed or collared, so he was able to burn his energy well, can't imagine having one without that space
lol
that's a concern I have - any dog 'needs' space
current neighbourhood has tons of open 'real' green space
future one has a landscape deck atop a carpark
He gave himself jobs too. He'd protect the garden from raccoons, catch mice, herd cattle, "supervise" hay baling...
15:45
oh lol
oof, yeah, that's tough
there 'might' be a park nearby
also local dogparks. ._.
Yeah, this house has a large lot and fenced yard, so the dogs can be turned out into it to run (though in our current weather, they usually just go out to pee, and sometimes have to get pushed out for that)
(I mean even if I get the new apartment squared off, a job that lets me take care of a dog 'properly' as a single and...)
ah, that's rich people money here :D
They got lucky on this plot, grabbed it during a previous housing crash
Meanwhile I grew up in the middle of nowhere with 180 acres of space
15:47
lol
If I lived somewhere like that
COLLIE!
My yard was at least the size of a standard city block (and we had to mow it)
(I absolutely adore border collies)
We did lots of labs/lab mixes, they loved running around that space and were good at sticking to the property
She's a lot bigger now but
Oh
and this one
That's a different dog, IIRC his name was echo, and this photo is from '17
SOMEONE gave him up
(I might be very much a I LOVE ALL THE DOGS person ._.)
(I almost wanted to ask the fosterer for her number cause... THAT IS SUCH A COOL DOG)
Ash wouldn't really have been happy with another dog I suspect, nor would have my mom :D
16:27
She's so cute! (And so is Echo)
