Q: Cats and dogs in microgravity; how much information is there on their locomotive ability or adaptability in space? Is there anything at all?

uhohCats and dogs are both known to be very popular pets for humans around the world and have been bred for thousands of years for this purpose. Destin Sandlin's Slow Motion Flipping Cat Physics | Smarter Every Day 58 includes footage of cats momentarily floating and flailing in aircraft in parabolic...

Q: What animals would be best suited as pets or comfort animals for extended periods of spaceflight in microgravity?

uhohVarious scenarios that put more or less every folks in space for extended periods of time in microgravity in the future have been proposed, mostly based on space tourism but there could be colonization scenarios as well. Yes artificial gravity is also proposed in some cases, but for the purpose o...

@uhoh Interesting question, but from the limited information I saw the purpose of shooting cats and dogs into space was always limited to assessing whether (or how well) mammals could survive microgravity at all.
11:24
I suspect by the time we launch pets into space, we'd have spin-gravity

Cats already seem to be minimally affected by earth's gravity

@C.Koca Should make a meta post 'Lila You Can Come Back If You Want'. :P

@AllisonC Looks outside window, sees cat floating by
@Sarov I grew up in a pretty crummy house, we had to cut some holes in the basement ceiling to help with pipes freezing (not enough heat was getting to them). My parents' bedroom was in the basement, and occasionally they'd find my cat in there even though the door was closed. We eventually found out she was getting in there through the ceiling holes--she'd exit into their bedroom after entering the one in the bathroom.
Which was located above the shower and only accessible if she jumped seven feet up onto a 6" ledge, with maybe about a foot between it and the ceiling.
(And yes, we did actually see her do it, it was an impressive move)
Haha, yeah, cats are pretty dang good at jumping.
Have anyone of you left your pet for a year or so?
@Wolgwang funny story that
I saw my old dog as a puppy, spent about a year with him, and left for 2
14:46
:-/ You didn't see him growing up.
Well he was convinced I was adopted at the airport.
Well I spent a little time when he was a funny looking gremlin, and later on when he got a little bigger, then well a good 13 or so years at a stretch
Maybe the next one ;)
Funny story :-D
@JourneymanGeek "He was convinced you were adopted at the airport"?
@Sarov Well he also tried to sneak into the airport once
What's that have to do with adoption?
14:56
@Sarov Dogs got picked up at the pet shop - and his original user used to board him there
Humans got picked up at the airport :D
Ooh kay.

@Wolgwang One of our cats went missing for a year, but that's a rather sad story... Came home with fleas and ear mites that left him permanently deaf on one ear and he was afraid of the dog he played with as a kitten :,(
18:04
I am sorry :-(
18:22
@Wolgwang You did it?! D:<
Fun fact: In Canada, there is a legal 'right to apologize'.
Primarily to allow doctors to say "I'm sorry for your loss" without getting sued for malpractice.
Apologizing cannot be held as a legal admission of guilt.
18:36
A subscription box of stuff I get for myself (surprise box, but high-quality stuff I've made really good use of) added a cat option so I decided to try it out. The outer shipping box is a cute design, with perforated sections to punch out and make it a cat toy!
(I love clever packaging designs like that, they aren't common but it's nice to see something clearly designed to be repurposed)
I've seen 'escape-room-in-a-box'es where you need to read/cut up the box itself to play.
@Sarov I've played some of those, the first one where we encountered part of the puzzle hidden in the box drove us crazy trying to figure it out. We had no idea the box was part of the game that way!
Hahaha I can imagine.
"Are you SERIOUS? The clue is the BAR CODE?!"
(Another one, the clue was the insert that held everything in place, you pulled it out and flattened it, and the shape was the clue)
There was one, I remember, where you had to perform 'exercise warmup stretches'.
The clue was the shape your body made.
18:42
Nice :D
There was one actual escape room my friends and I failed because it was a horror-themed one and part of it freaked us out too much XD If we had responded to it right away, we wouldn't have run out of time at the end
Cabin-in-the-woods with a serial killer lurking around type setting, complete with dying flashlights
Ugh, I went to a horror-themed one but it was too dark and quiet to make out the clues well.
This one wasn't quiet (the banging on the walls was where we freaked out), and eventually we were able to find a light switch, but they gave us each flashlights, one was already dying when we went in, one flickered and dimmed, and we found the lights just before the last one went out
Of course, the "dying" was actually all controlled by the room runner (which we learned afterward) so we weren't in danger of actually running out of light.
But finding our flashlights dead was REALLY unsettling!
Remote-control flashlights? Interesting.
All I really remember is having to crawl through a small tunnel where someone grabs you.
Which, lemmee tell you. With OCD? Not fun.
That and not being able to hear the speakers well.
Thankfully I've never done one where anyone grabs at us. There've been tunnels and ladders and hidden chambers and stuff, but no grabbing
And having flashlights, some of which we had to find.
18:50
Oh, and the one with handcuffs. That was a work function, the manager who booked it for us thought we were nuts for picking that one, and the extra people we invited to fill out the room who didn't know about that part gave us some crap for it.
Yyyeah I'd just outright refuse if it were me.
the first challenge in that one was to find the key so we could get free
19:06
"Yeah instead of that I'm just going to stand here and not touch anything until you find the key, k?"
Oh also that horror one had some of the stickers fallen off the props, making it basically unsolvable.
20:07
@Sarov Oh that's no good
Yeah they really shoulda given us a refund at that point.
20:22
Yeah, or at a minimum, a credit to play a different room free
Yeah I guess that works too.
Too late now, regardless.
