Q: Crate-training our puppy is not working - help!

Joe AugenbraunWe have had our puppy for about 6 weeks and have been unsuccessful at house-breaking him. We are at wit's end. We have been doing strict crate-training for about 4 weeks now. It has worked to some degree - when he needs to go, he starts crying and whining in the crate, and he will immediately ...

Q: Dog goes crazy when another dog is around

tbkn23My 6 months old dog loves her hairy friends. She loves them too much. When there's another dog around, she goes crazy playing with them, jumping and biting them. When that happens, she completely ignores us or any other people/toys around, and all she cares about is the other dog and playing with...

I still find it almost physically painful to read these questions, where a problem with a dog is already a reality. I would like to give advice beforehand, to help avoiding the problem, but they don't ask.

Besides, what is cratetraining?!
Do people keep their dogs in a crate when they don't feel like having a dog around?

I don't think that is what crate training is, but I don't have a dog (I have only really had cats) so I cant tell you much other than that.

From some reading, it seems to be an aid in housebreaking, and intended to give the dog a safe place to claim as theirs (for sleeping, or when they are scared, to know that that is a safe place for them away from whatever might be causing a problem) - all the sites I read say not to use it as punishment, and it isn't something you keep the dog in for long periods of time.

Admittedly, I am not an expert, this is just based on googling and some reading.

@EsaPaulasto "what is crate-training?" seems like a good question to ask. Do you want to post it?

Watching a movie on telly, but yeah, I'll post a question tonight if none did already

@AshleyNunn Yeah, first thing I did after reading the crate-training question was to google for it. And I found a page explaining it pretty well (the training part). The method offered on that page was okay, it said all the right things that I would have said and done if I wanted to crate-train my dog(s).
Given it some thought, it appears to me like a way to handle a dog that you could not train and handle the right way to begin with. So in a way, it seems like "okay" thing to do, if the owner of a dog had failed somewhere else. Just "okay". Not good or fine or great. Only okay, imo.
Let's see then, I'll have to think how to ask it in a way as not to give away my personal opinion (at least not too much of it).
... ah, heck.. I don't say I'm such a great dog-trainer myself either. It must be just lucky that I have such nice dogs. Intelligent and nice dogs.

I suspect it is just an alternative way to accomplish the same things you did with your animals.

Q: What is "crating" a dog?

Esa PaulastoFirst; this is not to ask for a step-by-step training advice. There are many questions and answers on Pets-SE that mention "crating" and "crate-training" a dog. First time I personally found crate-training was in this question: Crate training our puppy is not working? Having my doubts I went t...

@JamesJenkins I found out that crate-training was already asked and answered. Actually it was not quite the thing I wanted to ask either ;)

@MattS. (okay so I'm just getting caught back up on chat) I'm not sure I'm reading the same question that you are - pets.stackexchange.com/questions/485/… - The question is when is it okay to declaw a cat, not how do I keep my cat from clawing my family during play. The second question would have elicited a VERY different response IMO.

Q: Choosing durable toys for dogs

cimmanonWhen it comes to purchasing toys for dogs, how can I determine whether or not it will last just by looking at it or touching it? Websites that sell toys typically include reviews, but they are rarely helpful since any given item will have just as many glowing reviews (it lasted for months!) as i...

@Zaralynda It's that question yeah. I guess I ignore the titles and read the question that they type out. The way it was worded, I thought, they kept getting scratched while playing, and wanted to know when it's okay to declaw a cat.
As in, "I keep getting scratched, can I justify declawing my cat?"
It's possible I read into it too much though.

@MattS. That's a nice answer you wrote. I tend to read the question title and try to answer it directly, while the question body is just for giving background information.
