@Lix gtocha
@AshleyNunn cool ;)

2 hours later…
02:44
@AshleyNunn - Double @ signs gives a mod access to the super ping. You do have to be a mod, doesn't matter what site, to get that feature. Haven't had to use it, myself, though.
One of the odd aspects of the Stack network is that a mod for any site is automatically a mod for all of the chat, regardless of the room. This is why some of us could change the name and tag line of the room already (wasn't me, :p)
user15026
03:21
Yeah, I vaguely remember hearing about it when I was a libraries mod but I never used it. And I knew about the chat mod thing from that as well, and being 10k+ on Arqade.
I think it's lightly used for the most part.
Well... time to knock it off since I've got to be up for a morning flight to Phoenix. Looking forward to a bit of vacation, but I'll be tagging into the site as best I can while I'm away (picked up a roaming plan).
user15026
Have fun on your vacation!
Lix
Lix
07:00
good morning all!
Lix
Lix
07:40
@ski - I think this is a great edit. In cases like this where the actual action you need to take will not differ much if it is wild or a pet, it is possible to "translate" the post and ignore the fact that it would otherwise be off-topic
@mad - boker tov
@Lix Boker tov.
Lix
Lix
did the cats wake you up too? :P
@Lix The cats? Where do you live?
Lix
Lix
Moved to ramat gan earlier this week... but i'm talking about my cats :P
Ah, nah, I have one dog.
Lix
Lix
07:50
ahh.. cool - what type?
mixed
Amstaff + Boxer (we think)
very dog/cat/anything that moves-aggressive, very good with people
Lix
Lix
wow... that's quite a combination :P
Yeah
There are dogs in our Kibbutz that when they spot here from afar, they'll turn around and walk away
Or make a large detour around in the grass to not meet her head on :P
Lix
Lix
hahaha
כלב ערס ;)
But she's really great with people, the guys in our Kibbutz sometimes astound me, letting their kids roam free, petting dogs that can sometimes be 2-3 times their size.
Lix
Lix
08:03
oh wow... yea... I guess.. yea that's kinda silly :P
@Lix Ars ars, but I'm the one with the leash, dog owners let the dogs go free, if she's attacked, I won't hold her from defending herself.
Lix
Lix
I was on a kibbutz for ~1.5 years when I first came to Israel and at one stage there was a problem of a pack of very agressive street dogs roaming the kibbutz... kinda scary at night walking back to the caravan :P
hehe true
@Lix We had this guy, he would take his dog to a walk, and would collect other dogs along the way
He would make this pack of about 4 dogs (the same ones every time)
Lix
Lix
collect? :P like other peoples dogs?
Yes, along with him to the walk
Dogs always roam free, so it wasn't really a problem.
Lix
Lix
08:06
cool :P
Not really, since these dogs would then proceed to kill cats and whatnot. As a pack.
Lix
Lix
ohh... not cool
Now, 2 of those really hate mine, so when I went to a walk one day, when they spotted her, they lunged on her, with the other two following the rest of the pack
Lix
Lix
oh shit... that sounds like a bad situation...
I just let go of the leash (4vs1 + the leash handicap? no way). She beat all 4 of them xD
Lix
Lix
08:07
hahah
08:32
@Lix thnx lix
so you are both Jewish men?
@man
Lix
Lix
@ski - I am
@kix I joined the Se site
@lix
Lix
Lix
mi yodea?
my daughter does Jewish scripture
yes
Lix
Lix
oh interesting... but your family is not jewish?
08:42
I had oftern thought of converting funny enough, which is why I am so comfortable in a Jewish community. It feels inclusive
Lix
Lix
I remember you saying that you live in a jewish community
yes
I really like it
Lix
Lix
cool :)
I will go answer another question :)
Lix
Lix
I was born here but spent ~13 years in Zimbabwe
08:44
yes
that woul dhave been different
Lix
Lix
There was also a jewish community vibe there..
very different from here
my son's best friend (he is there now) was born in Israel
his family speak Hebrew at home
Lix
Lix
we always spoke English :P
I figure I should learn more
No this particular family speak Hebrew at home, but I think that is because they moved to Australia and wanted the children to speak it well
Lix
Lix
I wish my parents had done that
08:46
I wish I was bilingual
Lix
Lix
My Hebrew is not amazing and the longer I live here the more I loose my English :P
I only know kangaroo
That's good :)
Lix
Lix
hehe
My son says things to me and I never know if he's insulting me
Lix
Lix
lol
08:47
so if one of my daughter's friends is around, I ask them to translate
He likes to call me a something monkey oin Hebrew
can't remember
Lix
Lix
Kof? :)
He strings it into a sentence so I can't pick up the particular word
hehe smart hey?
Lix
Lix
ahh :)
yes...very :)
I will ask him when he comes home. It's Sat night here, they are both gone
With Jewish families haha One Speaks Hebrew and is not Kosher, the other can't speal Hebrew and is Kosher
Lix
Lix
You're UTC+10 right?
08:49
yup
Lix
Lix
hehe the irony :P
u are +3?
Lix
Lix
for the moment...yes.. :S
U can see my curiosity. It's like a small part of Israel around my home
we are almost opposite the school
and two
two synagogues!!
Nothing like a mid-day shower :D
09:13
@Skippy as for your question regarding the moderator post (as in, why you aren't fit)
I see that you are doing really well on this site (even though I was warned about you from mods of different sites). It's not what you lack, it's that ultimately, the ones making the decision (at least before the election) are Stack Exchange employees, and since they know you well, it might affect their decision, even if you have a large community support.
I really enjoy seeing you participating and really doing well! But that's my 2c about it.
Keep up the good work though, show them they are wrong.
You have a much better chance at the elections when the site graduates, than as a pro-temp (at least that's what I think, nothing personal against you).
@Skippy Same here, ultimately, you should just be honest, list your strengths and how you can benefit the site etc. If you aren't known around SE, most if not all attempts at humour will backfire on you (referring to you first self nomination). Being number one in terms of rep and meta participation will definitely help tho, best of luck.
09:35
@iKlsR the humor was in response to the downvote
@MadaraUchiha I am very unpopular
I had previously had been on SO for a couole of yrs
@Skippy I know, and as such, if you truly wish to be a moderator, you need to rebuilt the community's trust in you.
and participated on MSO and English
and Chem
and Biol
and Area 51
Here is my advice to you:
@MadaraUchiha what ever will be will be. I have posted 126 posts here cogsci.stackexchange.com/users/3543/skippy
in a few months
Keep posting questions and answers, keep participating in meta, give useful insights and suggestions, and don't go on a rampage like I know you've done in the past.
First impression is hard to overcome, but it's not impossible.
09:39
@MadaraUchiha I am here, because someone showed me a kindness and great patience
I thoroughly enjoy contributing
For pets and cogsci, I have some things to give
programming nada, but I am studying programming
I am learning not to care what the community thinks of me. Put my head down and just enjoy contributing
In that regard it makes me the ideal moderator, as I am not afraid to make the hard decisions.
@Skippy That's not what a moderator is about.
As a moderator, you work with the people, not against them.
If not, it's a drop in the ocean, we are only here for a blink of the universal eye
What they think of you does matter.
I am not against people
I mean being objective about posts
It's not about winning votes, but thinking of the site
@MadaraUchiha it is not me personally who matters, but what kind of job I can do.
Yes if people lose their heds, that is not good, I totally agree
@Skippy There's where you're wrong :)
A moderator is someone that has to be trusted by the community, and Stack Exchange.
09:44
@MadaraUchiha yeh probably
I agree with you
Right now, to be honest, you don't have Stack Exchange's trust.
I do not know how to fit in, and so probably will never be liked
What you need to do, is build your trust, and apply for the elections once the site graduates.
@MadaraUchiha then why am I here
If your community puts their trust in you, they will elect you.
@Skippy by Stack Exchange I mean the company, the community team, that is.
09:45
Yes, but if I am so maligned, what place do I have here?
Not the specific Pets community.
@MadaraUchiha you mean the people employed by SE?
@Skippy It's not that you're maligned, you've put a negative first-impression, that you now need to correct, it's all :)
@Skippy Yes, the people who dealt with you before.
@MadaraUchiha a negative impression is quite an understatement
I'm trying to be subtle here :D
09:47
when you say the people I've dealt with before, it includes, about 10,000 people, so can you be more specific :)
I know @MadaraUchiha u r trying to be subtle
My belief is that it is important to grant constructive and honest criticism to someone if they're willing to listen, however "hurtful" it is.
@Skippy Not the people you've dealt with, the people who dealt with you.
@MadaraUchiha yes.
@MadaraUchiha I am rally unsure which people you are referring to, who dealt with me?
I am not being funny, I actually am unsure of whom you mean, as it could be a few permutatios
@Skippy Moderators of previous sites you visited, SE employees.
@MadaraUchiha so none of them like me?
@MadaraUchiha I think you have more information about this than I do?
Please share
I cannot share specifics, but I will say that the community knows you
09:51
@MadaraUchiha I probably had fights with you.
Once :)
I don't hold grudges though
Hm you are putting a new slant on this
In a way that they see Skippy and immediately think of a problematic user
@MadaraUchiha neither do I, believe it or not.
That is the view you should aim to correct.
I'll give you another example
We had a user on Stack Overflow, that would keep answering crap questions.
09:53
Yes
and?
He was a reknowned repwhore, (someone who would answer for rep, regardless of quality)
yes
We invited him over to our chat
We "held his hand" in a way of showing him what kinds of questions are worth answering, and which need correction.
yes
Right now, he's a very valuable user, with extensive knowledge in both the subject, and with dealing with problem questions.
09:55
yes
People change, and the opinions of people around them change as well.
true
So are you telling me that the SE team are only nice to me, to tolerate me?
That's where I want you to get, to the place where people wouldn't remember or wouldn't want to remember "the old Skippy", but "moderator Skippy who is very valuable to the community"
@MadaraUchiha I am no politician.
he thing is, SE is not all it seems
and it loses a lot of people, as some site; the bigger sites, can be too much for newcomers
I am not saying that my reaction was good or right, I'm not actually referring to me
But have seen and talked to many people who have left feeling excluded
@MadaraUchiha you see, some of the circles here are tight, and the longer term community cannot understand the effect it has on one person being new
Speaking from experience with communities.
As communities mature, with the rules more based, and the eldest members established
They will by nature become more hostile to newcomers
Every single online community faces that problem at one point or another.
Stack Exchange is trying very very hard to mitigate that problem, by providing an /about page, and a centeralized help center, to allow for newcomers to quickly catch on.
10:02
This is not about me, but was the thing I was trying to help change, but obvioulsy faile ddismally, one against 10,000 is not good odds and I exploded, and melted, imploded all simultaneously, but this was NOT because of SE, it was my own life that led me to be so distraught.. It just erupted on a global network.. Sooooooo now any reputation I had anywhere is commpletely gone omg lol
@MadaraUchiha yes and no
some want to particpate more than others
And that is where the difficulty lies
If that person is not adept at being in a group, please God have mercy on them
Thing is, many users just don't like reading, and as such, start asking question that were already asked many times before, asking crap questions, lacking details in question, chat formatting (u cn d ths 4 mi pls)
I am being tongue in cheek, but there is truth in that
I agree @mad but you must admit MSO is sometimes difficult to search
@Skippy I agree to that.
MSO is a different type of beast.
and it's almost like studying law to learn how to use SE ! lol
I'm not saying Stack Exchange is a perfect community, don't get me wrong!
10:04
MSO is one scary beast :)
But in many cases, I see it as the user's fault.
hey I LOVE SE or why would I bother putting my head on the chopping block so much ;)
It can be both of course
The thing I love about SE is, it exercises my mind
it makes me think of things I haven't thought about for years
@Skippy When I see users coming to MSO and asking a question fit on SO, just because they are question banned on SO, that's the user's fault.
When a user asks a question that gets closed within 2 minutes, it's usually the user's fault.
@MadaraUchiha yes.
@MadaraUchiha yes
I agree
That's not what concerns me
When you ask a question/point something out on MSO, and other user lash out and completely bludgeon whatever opinion that you may have had
That is not the user's fault.
I agree there.
10:07
@MadaraUchiha tell me about it
I used to get so stressed asking there.. and I don't regret it
I truly wanted to understand and people thought I was being difficult
I tell you how my brain works
Reading the FAQ
and suggsting edits for eg
I found it very difficult to get the hang of which edits to approve and not fairly
so I kept going back
asking things that seemed simple, but I was reading dozens of mso posts etc and absorbing it all, and my brain is a bit weird like that
I am a literal person
Like a computer
You give me the map, the rules, I follow them (sometimes i do forget)
I find it hard, when I am following rules and then see others not
eg unicorn jokes etc on MSO
so when I make a jk
20 downvotes
It was confusing
Heh, I know the feeling :)
It doesn't matter I see the problem. I am a 46 yo woman.
I think entirely differently to the average man
I am bossy
I have an adult son, so when young men tell me what to do or talk to me disrespectfully, I really didn't like it
BTW not justifying my behavior, that was extreme and out of the ball park
My reaction was another thing and ENTIRELY my fault
That was the result of 40+ years of frustration bubbling over at an inopportune time.. on 10,000 ninja MSO users lol
I lost the plot on Cog Sci, but never like on MSO
Shame I was defensive and prickly because of MSO and it got me off on the wrong foot, as I was already upset before i got there.. Make sense @mad
?
Yes, I'm still here
the ? is does that make sense
Sure it does
Like I said, first impressions are everything
10:16
It wasn't CogSci people's fault, that I was a raving lunatic
@MadaraUchiha yes, but does it matter?
@Skippy In the long run, first impressions can be overcome.
what I mean is we are a short time on this earth. In perspective it is not important,.. there are more things to be worried about
@MadaraUchiha yes, true
Heh, everything should have its perspective
In the grand scheme of things, whether or not you or I succeed at Stack Exchange isn't likely to change much
Our world is in a bit of a mess
why do u keep linking Se? lol it's like you're an ad
But narrowing down our perspective, if you do want to do well, and even become a moderator, I've told you what you should be doing
10:18
yes sir
It's a shorthand [se] which expands to a full name with link :P
[se] [so] [metaso] [pets.se] [meta.pets.se] etc
There's a whole bunch of them
@mad I thought you had become (instead of a door to door salesman) a pc to pc salesman of SE
Heh, hardly :P
10:19
it's a jk
oh and I make terrible jokes, but I think they're really funny
U should feel sorry for my kids
Anyway, I enjoy the posts
It has reminded me of a life I'd forgotten
@MadaraUchiha I got to go answer questions and do some stuff :)
good to chat.. who knows what will happen... it's not really that important.. Most people don't continue on when so unpopular in a community, But I enjoy posting on SE.. so we'll see what ahppens hey ;)

@ski - you feel like this post should remain as-is with the two issues?
I think that each issue could be an individual post - so why not give each the place they need?
Or even better - you could post a self answered post talking about general "inflated sense of ... dominance with respect to the owner" detailing all the tel tail signs of this problem///
and then close the two post as duplicates ;)
---

On a related note, are there any canonical posts we would want to compile prior to public beta launch?

1 hour later…
@Lix yes it is part of a bigger problem
the OP is clearly describing the problem to us and it is one problem based
Ok Just saw yes, will post a posty post about the general type so g behavior.. hm coul dbe a bit bloggish
@AnkitSharma @JamesJenkins hi
@Skippy hi
My nomination with recommendation for you is getting killed.
Anyways i love to try even with less chances.
I know
we still have each other :)
as the two at the bottom
xx
I g2g answer a Q
bbsorl
beback sooner or later
@AnkitSharma ^^
14:25
@Skippy @AnkitSharma "nomination with recommendation for you is getting killed" don't think of it as negative. Skippy is at the top of the Rep & Activity Pile. Clearly a respected member.
It is really important to not take votes on Meta personally
Also it is not a duty to undertake lightly, it is mostly a thankless task.
Non-moderators can actually have a bigger impact on designing and forming the site
@JamesJenkins i understand that and it will going to stop me from participation
As a moderator you represent the "site" as a high rep member, you represent your self and the knowledge and experience you bring
@AnkitSharma, good :) _ I am off to other journeys, have great day
OOps i mean..i understand that and it will not going to stop me from participation
@JamesJenkins just watching tv and concentration got diverted and missed ""not """.
Yep that is what I read
@JamesJenkins catch you later. You can find me roaming around here.
14:46
Litter Box - see, that's a great name for the chat.
15:20
@JamesJenkins ty, if I'm happy posting, I'm good.. we have a good community, we all listen and try to hear each other and that's all we need
@AnkitSharma phew you had me worried!

Q: How can I stop a dog's bad barking and chewing habits?

DaGhostman DimitrovI have a 7-month old Yorkshire Terrier who is wonderful, but has some bad habits. He always chews on my fingers. Not in a painful way, but it starts to annoy me because whenever I try to pat him, he will do everything to put my fingers in his mouth. He barks whenever we sit down to have dinner...

hi @josh'
o@JoshDM
Lix
Lix
@ski - a superbly formatted answer!
I still feel though (as is shown by the length of the answer) that there might have been too much in one question...
@Lix it's not too badm actually, it's a little more canonical which is a relief get s it out of the way
