@Stephie heh I probably need one of those. I'm clumsy

@Sarov @lila Sorry for necromancing the topic ;) but I find it funny how the president is "inaugurated" while "augury" is the ancient roman religious practice of predicting the future from the behavior (or entrails) of birds en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augury

@Elmy hmm.. .prediction of the future by ex-presidential entrails?
Certainly would keep only the most committed

@JourneymanGeek Oh, great idea, let's do that!

That said, I rather liked all but the last president
Even Bush (well as an ex president anyway)

I only ever "liked" Obama, but then the American culture is so different from my own in terms of how a respectable person should speak and behave that I found most of the other ones rather unlikable. Needless to say Trumps attitude was unbearably rude in my eyes

@Sarov creative thinking is identifying fresh salsa as a tomato-fruit salad :)

hi

@AllisonC Found the bard.

@Sarov exactly XD (though I never play them, personally, but I like the joke :) )

I... don't know if I've ever played one, even as an NPC. Huh.

For myself, I play sorcerers; as far as my NPCs go, most of them have been mercenaries or average townfolk. (I do have my usual sorcerer as a semi-NPC in the current campaign, because we started with a very small group that had never played before so he was there to help guide them in how to play; now they're off on their own so I can focus more on DMing)

@Elmy Haha no problem, it is interesting, but inauguration is not specific to presidents, a lot of other things and people are inaugurated, the augur was observing birds so birds could tell whether it is worth to promote that person or thing.

The internet gives a *lot* of flak for GMPCs. But it's really a personal preference. I've had players who strongly prefer there to be one.

Though converting a PC to a GMPC when you transition from player to GM is not something I'd recommend. That was a bad time. The GMPC was way too powerful and spotlight-stealy... but when I tried to kill him off, that player still stopped/thwarted me!

@lila LOL, reminds of that time when Donald Trump was attacked by a bald eagle. What would ancient greek augurs have thought?

@Sarov Since in this case, my GMPC started out with the rest of the group, I kept him at roughly the same level as everyone else, and as a glass cannon, he stayed pretty far back in combat to let them shine. As luck would have it, I also tended to roll VERY badly when he did try something. XD
My players like him as a character to have around but also totally get me shuffling him into far more of a NPC role now that they're a lot more comfortable playing.

This GMPC was... over-optimized even as a PC. He himself was basically invulnerable, and his *animal companion* and *familiar* were roughly on par with the other *PCs*!

(Actually it worked pretty well when I had one of them accompany the party instead of the GMPC. The AC had an INT of 6 and a greater hat of disguise to turn him into a human so he could talk.)

I can see that as a big problem. I kind of deliberately under-optimized my character a bit, and focused mostly on non-combat spells. The fighter is probably a lot more over-optimized, and the rogue was pretty deadly too, so with all that combined it was easy to background him. :)

In the end it worked out fairly well, I guess. And at this point in the story they're going up against minor deities and archdukes, so having superpowerful GMPC is kind of expected since everyone is.
(As per a post by a game dev and my own calculations, the GMPC legitimately counts as a minor deity himself, now...)

Nvm, now that I wrote it out...
