i think there was ~8 users who all had a username starting with tim
So @_tim (lets not bother a real tim) would summon a mass riot of people annoyed at the number of pings...
and... you can only change your username once in 30 days...so...

In a short timeframe it is possible to change it more often, just did that a few days ago

Our Litter Box looks full today

Q: Avoid pinging multiple users in chat

Kendall FreySeveral chat room users are becoming annoyed by a certain feature of the chat room notification system. When there are two people in a chat room, say John and JohnSmith, and someone pings @John, JohnSmith is also pinged. This is naturally annoying to JohnSmith, especially if someone is having a l...

@AnkitSharma seems that the members of pets.SE have become house-trained as they are all using it ;)

Lix
lol

9:09 PM
I think its not a duplicate

Q: Are street animal question on topic here?

Ankit SharmaSome people like to interact with street animals like cats/dogs. By feeding them playing with them but doesn't adopt them because of liabilities. So the question regarding them going to be allowed or not?

alteast the referred question doesn't provide answer to it.

I think the answer from the "duplicate" fits well…
If you can consider that animal to be a pet, it can be an on topic question. otherwise it probably isn't.

@Baarn i think i will going to ask one sooner.
Atleast it got entry in Community Bulletin.

A question like "There are too many dogs roaming my city, what can we do?" sure is off topic in the sense of pets.SE

Lix
@bam - agreed

"Should I feed a cat that shows up on my doorstep?" might be on topic (although it polls for opinions which is baaaad)

9:15 PM
@Baarn but what about ** what should i give to my pregnant street cat which roams around our house**

Lix
If the context was to eventually bring the cat in as a pet then it would fit...

@AnkitSharma just ask the question. Worst case is that it gets closed, which I still consider to be good, as we might learn from that.

@Lix but if someone doesn't want to take permanent responsibility and only want to take care him from distance?
@Baarn willl surely ask it later
Now its too late....its already 2:48 a.m and tomorrow has to go to office
Anyways Good night guys(Adjust it with your time zones ;) ).... c u all tomorrow

good night, ankit
What sounds most familiar to a native speaker when talking about fresh water crabs? crayfish, crawdad, mudbug or something else?
Oh and: one hundred internetz for the person who guesses about which animal my next question is!!1!

Lix
@baa - unicorns?

9:34 PM
@AnkitSharma good time zone
@Baarn this is highly variable; in the US it's regional. (Though I've never heard mudbug.)

I think I simply go with the first translation the dictionary proposed (crayfish)

does anyone know how tag synonyms work on p.betas?

both other options are tagged [Am.], don't want to exclude British folks

@Lix you mean how to define them? Ask someone with a diamond, since it takes >1k rep and nobody has that yet.

@Lix post them on meta

9:37 PM
@Baarn or that. :-)

that's what I always have to do… I never have the required 5 upvotes on those tags…

Lix
behavior/behaviour worth it?

do they both exists?

Lix
only one post with the British spelling..

in that case … yeah, I think so

Lix
9:38 PM
guess i could just retag

@Lix I don't think substring synonyms are ever worth it; once you start typing it'll offer you the tag.

Lix
true...true...

I think retagging the few behaviours is the way to go. I did that for singular "cat" earlier (to "cats").

No idea what our stance on BE/AmE is yet? Or is there a network wide guideline?

Lix
i think the majority takes it...

9:39 PM
Somewhere on meta (maybe the behavio(u)r question) there was mention that SE tends toward AmE.

Lix
and in that sense, network wide we are stuck with AmE

I don't much care either way, so long as we just have one for any given tag. :-)

Lix
@mon - your blue username makes everything you say much more authoritative :P

Q: Create a tag synonym for behavio(u)r

ThomasHWe have both the behavior and the behaviour tag. At the moment, American spelling is winning 6:2 but we should probably settle on the one and make the other a synonym. I'm not sure who has the power to do this, but it seems I can't anyway.

ah, that was the question you were talking about
there is even a link to that network wide decission

Lix
now we just have to make sure no one uses that tag for a day or so and it'll disappear

9:43 PM
Oh, I guess someone will manage to use it again ;)

Lix
@baa - did you just create the tag? :P

of course… it really bothers me that those cute little guys all ended up in our filter :(

Lix
that's the before image I assume

yeah, I didn't take one of their remains ;)

Lix
all I remember from our pond back in the day was the frogs...
there might just be a post somewhere in there :P

9:50 PM
actually I haven't seen them clogging the pump, but I trust my dad to distinguish between crabs and foliage

@Lix ooh, I forgot about the intimidation power of text color. :-) (I use CSS overrides to make the site easier to see, and one casualty of that is the different link color -- so I keep forgetting about it. :-) )

Lix
can you summon joel with a single ping? ;)
oy... they are multiplying!

@Lix I guess I could, but there might be consequences and I'm fond of my diamond...

Lix
a wild blue username enters the room

Who's multiplying?
Oh.

9:55 PM
Is this one case of "don't say biggie smalls three times"?

@Lix ♦ is my body and blue is my name.

Lix
@baa - I don't quite get that reference
bows

thanks @iKlsR :)

:)

10:00 PM
haha

Wow only a few days into beta and tags are already full of plagiarisms

The mods will be in for quite a bit of work the rate this site is moving.

blink I'd completely forgotten that I created the tag; I just got a Taxonomist badge for it. I'd figured that only and would be that popular by now.
@Baarn oh joy. I don't see a way to flag tag wikis; if you notice them and can't fix them, I suggest rolling back.

10:15 PM
I don't know how to roll back. Simply deleting the content isn't possible and I don't see an edit history on tags …

Q: Wikipedia plagiarism on tags

Baarnfish WP: Fish It always happens that user populate a tag with content plagiarized from Wikipedia. What do you think about this?

I will list other tags there as soon as I spot them
snakes, too…

@Baarn Good initiative, btw, snake link needs fixing.

thanks
I am normally pretty relaxed on copyright issues, but when the content is free already, I think the people who spent their time at least deserve attribution.
The same problem will come up with unattributed pictures, sooner or later, too

10:32 PM
@Baarn good idea with compiling the list on meta. (I suggest changing the last part of your question from "what do you think?" to "what should we do?". Let's not model bad behavior on meta (i.e. that would be bad on main). :-)

@MonicaCellio true, I changed that bit. :)

10:44 PM
good night from GMT+3! see you soon

@Lix Cheers. o/

good night @Lix
