Q: How can Windows 98 shut down in less than 5 seconds?

Nelson BlakeI have used Windows 98, and observed that its shutdown is very fast. How is that?

It's not as fast as my C64 :)
I mean, MS-DOS can shutdown quicker...
If I pull the plug, pretty much any desktop shuts down quickly (the laptop not so much).
How does my W7 shut down in five seconds? I deleted all the bloat and refuse to upgrade because my copy of The White Album still plays on it just fine.
@BrianH NB the C64 booted in less than 5 seconds

I think my current Mac shuts down approximately as fast as that if I shut it down from an "empty state".
In Windows 98, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete twice and be amazed at how fast it restarts.
Fast ? Back in the 90’s I can tell you you were likely to wait over 45 minutes.
@Boann yes, and on the next reboot, because of ꜰᴀᴛ32 be amazed how it takes 2 entire hours of ScanDisk for your 120Gb drive before booting.
@user2284570 It doesn't do a scan in this case, so I assume unmounts the file system first.
@Boann I was meaning still in ᴅᴏꜱ mode. But it was automatic. You didn’t have the choice.
@user2284570 There is no disk scan after pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete twice to restart.

@Boann yes it only happens on the next boot. Though the worst case is (and still) Linux with ext2.
@user2284570 There is no scan on next boot. I used to restart that way all the time.
@Boann ok didn’t have to rebuild my old computer networkencyclopedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/…
@user2284570 I know what Scandisk looks like. Windows 98SE. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete. The "Close Program" dialog appears. The text at the bottom says "WARNING: Pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL again will restart your computer. You will lose unsaved information in all programs that are running." Press it again. It reboots instantly. Scandisk is not run on next startup in this case. That's why I always rebooted this way, because it was faster.
@Boann Yes, I know and on the screenshot. To avoid seeing this message again always shut down your computer by selecting Shut Down from the Start menu. Of course, what you describe isn’t using the start menu. This was the reason I liked Windows xp in the way that even in the case you have to reboot without using the system you could get a shorter result whereas I was complaining that Windows 98 was less stable than the atari st and that as consequence it made it slower despite using way more powerful hardware.
And with the irony that many times I had to press CTRL+ALT+DEL twice after attempting to reboot it normally and a few ʙᴏꜱᴅ making I wasn’t able to use Google again for a long time.
@user2284570 "Yes, I know". No you clearly don't, because you kept claiming it runs Scandisk.
