@Fivesideddice the hardest part of the job is trying to figure out the best way for the site to deal with "bad" behavior. Luckily, we don't have to do that very often
People bickering in comments is hard sometimes too, because the people involved aren't malicious, they're just worked up and often moderators don't get involved until it's far to late to de-escalate things
Trying to find a balance between a warning that people will just ignore, and a suspension that will make people reconsider their behavior without driving them off the site isn't something someone should have to do with no other people to talk to about it.
Most of the job is responding to flags though
and most of the flags are straighforward
Repeated low quality contributions and excessive discussion in comments are probably the most common reason ELL moderators get involved in a negative way with people
Or at least it was last year before I resigned
Moderators have a lot of opportunities to interact in positive ways with people as well
It's really nice to be able to take the comments from a new user under their question, incorporate all that information and make the question clearer, then clean up the comments. It helps them get good answers more often than not.
You don't have to worry so much about losing privileges if you want to spend your reputation on bounties for questions you think didn't get enough attention
