@EddieKal One thing to keep in mind is that moderating doesn’t have to be a full time job. A lot of the benefit of having multiple moderators is having access to someone else’s perspective on what would be the best thing for the site.
It’s an important job, but it doesn’t have to be a very time consuming one.

If anyone is interested in running but is hesitant because they aren’t sure about what being an ELL moderator is like exactly, I am happy to answer questions about it

Not really considering running, but just out of curiosity, but what is it like? What are the problems you mainly have to deal with/hard decisions to be made?

@Fivesideddice the hardest part of the job is trying to figure out the best way for the site to deal with "bad" behavior. Luckily, we don't have to do that very often
People bickering in comments is hard sometimes too, because the people involved aren't malicious, they're just worked up and often moderators don't get involved until it's far to late to de-escalate things
Trying to find a balance between a warning that people will just ignore, and a suspension that will make people reconsider their behavior without driving them off the site isn't something someone should have to do with no other people to talk to about it.
Most of the job is responding to flags though
and most of the flags are straighforward
Repeated low quality contributions and excessive discussion in comments are probably the most common reason ELL moderators get involved in a negative way with people
Or at least it was last year before I resigned
Moderators have a lot of opportunities to interact in positive ways with people as well
It's really nice to be able to take the comments from a new user under their question, incorporate all that information and make the question clearer, then clean up the comments. It helps them get good answers more often than not.
You don't have to worry so much about losing privileges if you want to spend your reputation on bounties for questions you think didn't get enough attention

One thing I think it's important to mention - You don't have to be an expert in English to be a good moderator. A moderator's job is not to answer questions, but to help make the site a place where people feel comfortable participating.

Interesting!

@ColleenVpartedways, thanks for all the good information. It sounds kind of fun but I've only got 24 hours in a day and a lot of other commitments. I hope someone steps up but I'll pass. Thanks.

@SarahBowman It is very rewarding and doesn't have to take a huge amount of time, but I understand having commitments
It's not the hours and minutes for me so much as being able to focus on only so many things ;)
