@Ginger Just FYI: Editing prior to deletion does help a bit, because

⠀⠀A) The userscripts that make it trivial to see deleted chat messages only show the most recent revision, so the edit makes it so the text isn't as easily available to those with access and who are running an appropriate userscript. However, all revisions are still available to both room owners and moderators with a couple of clicks, unless a moderator purges the message history.

⠀⠀B) there's no stock UI way to edit to redact the content after the message has been deleted. Just purging the message history won't remove the current content, so an edit is needed.

Without a userscript, it's non-trivial to redact if the message wasn't edited prior to deletion, but there are at least two userscripts which moderators can use to edit to redact, delete, and purge the history, and can do so even if the message has been deleted. So, with one of those userscripts it's trivial to do everything that's needed regardless of if the message has been edited or deleted.

So, editing prior to deleting helps, but isn't necessary.
