@sempaiscuba Hello, thanks for you reviews recently. I noticed you reviewed this question but didn’t flag to close it as opinion-based or needs more focus. It was unfit for SE. Do you have a reason why you didn’t flag to close it?
22:39
@Daniil Because I wanted to give the OP a chance to read the comment before it was closed and/or deleted. I'd already flagged it as opinion-based on Robotics:SE.
IMO, the cross-posting is something that also needs to be addressed.
user435118
@sempaiscuba I do understand your reasoning but if it was closed they would still be able to read it :)
And that should probably be the higher priority since it impacts multiple sites.
user435118
@sempaiscuba What do you suggest be done about it?
I'm a mod on History:SE. We tend to take a lighter touch, and the community closes questions like this.
IMO, Drones and Model Aircraft:SE needs to find its own balance in that regard. But giving the OP some feedback on why their question is being closed is always a good start.
user435118
1. I’m not sure the question would get five votes since we are a small community 2. You could have helped by flagging to close but I’ve closed it myself now
22:45
1. That's something that we need to find out (again IMO). 2. I'd already posted a comment about the cross-posting.
On History:SE, we're still working out a form of words to try to give people feedback when voting to close questions. Maybe something similar would be of use here?
user435118
Since you’re here, I was wondering why you downvote a lot of posts when reviewing but then retract the downvotes afterwards? Just curious?
I doubt there will ever be a one-size-fits-all solution, but (again IMO) something is better than nothing.
I don't.
user435118
@sempaiscuba Sure, feel free to post on our Meta
When I downvote, I only retract if the question/answer is improved.
user435118
@sempaiscuba Unfortunately the advanced reviewer stats suggest otherwise :/
22:50
Then there is either something wrong with the stats, or with the SE app. :/
I'll try to post something on meta here if I get time. I'm busy with other stuff atm, and most of the time I do get to spend on SE at the moment is taken up with moderating.
user435118
👍 In the future please flag to close when the question is not up-to-scratch :)
FWIW, I can see my downvote on the cross-posted question.
I don't know what other questions you think might have retracted votes?
user435118
In the past 30 days of FP reviews you have downvoted 6 posts. I’ve looked through all of your recent FP reviews only 2 have any down votes
Also, if you want to discuss questions of moderation, I'd suggest setting up a private chatroom, rather than discussing it in public chat.
How many of those posts were edited after they were reviewed?
user435118
23:06
@sempaiscuba I’ve said what I wanted to say, I think there was no need
@Daniil If you are going to ask about downvotes (or upvotes, for that matter), which are meant to be anonymous, then you should do it in a private room, not in a public chat.
Personally, I don't particularly care. I'm quite happy to say when I've upvoted or downvoted a post.
But that can attract negative responses from some people, so it should generally be kept private. Not everyone will be as thick-skinned as me.
user435118
@sempaiscuba I was just asking why you were downvoting and then retracting :) AFAIK there’s no need for a private chat
@Daniil Like I said, I wasn't. Unless the posts were edited and improved, in which case I removed or reversed my downvote.
Last time I looked, that is how voting is meant to work on SE sites?
user435118
@sempaiscuba Most were edited (AFAIK some were retracted right after the review). I’m just asking you to be a bit more careful with reviewing and flag when necessary. If you want more details/examples please let me know
23:21
@Daniil AFIK, none should have been retracted right after the review. Even if the question or answer were edited almost immediately after the review I'm not usually on here long enough to see it right away.
If there is a problem in that regard, perhaps it's better if I leave those reviews to others?
Anyway, it's late and I have stuff to do. If you think there is a problem, ping me sometime during the day tomorrow.
user435118
@sempaiscuba We welcome you to review and want you to do so effectively, just asking you to be a bit more careful :)
user435118
Especially in flagging
@Daniil I've been reviewing on SE sites for more than 3 years. If I decide not to flag, it's because I have a reason for deciding that.
You may see it differently, that is your opinion, and that is also fine.
That is what Community moderated means.
user435118
@sempaiscuba IMO I’ve found 3 examples which are quite clearly flaggable
23:49
@Daniil That's nice. Without knowing which questions you're talking about I can't comment except to say that if I didn't flag them then I was of a different opinion.
Look, I do those reviews to try and help out with site moderation tasks. I will continue to exercise my judgement as I see fit. If you'd prefer that I don't contribute on the review queues, then I'm fine with that too.
I know that some folks like to work towards gaining badges, so I'm assuming there should be no shortage of reviewers, even on a small site. :)
On that note, since it's almost 1am here, I'm going to go and try to get some sleep.
