Just finished reading @prkirkley's hugely ambitious and very good A Space Helmet For A Cow. Of all the many, many books about Doctor Who, this is the only one I know of that attempts a narrative history of the programme.

Q: What does "an affront to the common store of life" mean here?

Pasta AddictI am reading The Great Gatsby, and would very much like to know what "an affront to the common store of life" means in the following sentences: He set down the receiver and came toward us, glistening slightly, to take our stiff straw hats. "Madame expects you in the salon!" he cried, nee...

Q: What does "the master's body" mean here?

Pasta AddictI am reading The Great Gatsby, and finding it difficult to grasp what "The master's body" means in the following sentences: ...Through the hall of Buchanans' house blew a faint wind, carrying the sound of the telephone bell out to Gatsby and me as we waited at the door. "The master's bod...

Q: What was "standard shift" in the 1920's?

Pasta AddictI am reading The Great Gatsby, and encountered these sentences: "Shall we all go in my car?" suggested Gatsby. He felt the hot, green leather of the seat. "I ought to have left it in the shade." "Is it standard shift?" demanded Tom. "Yes." "Well, you take my coupe and let me drive yo...

Q: Is it possible that Bastian's journey to Fantastica was purely metaphysical?

Rand al'ThorThe first half of The Neverending Story is about Bastian reading a fantasy story about Atreyu's adventures in Fantastica. The second half is about Bastian's own adventures in Fantastica, a world which he basically recreates from nothing, becoming a completely different person himself in the proce...

Whee, I have officially read 100 books so far this year.
:O
That's... a lot.
(Goodreads fixed their bugs?)

Agreed, that's a lot.
user15026
@Mithrandir yeah, they did. :)

@Bookworm You've given a tough task with this one. Obviously the start and end of the book is written to make sure the journey to Fantastica is tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MaybeMagicMaybeMundane . There's no definite proof remaining of it, Bastian doesn't bring anything back from Fantastica and doesn't get any superhuman powers, but at the same time it's hard to explain how he changed so much if it was just a dream and there was no book at all.
Forgot to say - glad you got the second book, @b_jonas :D

Oh, that reminds me. The bad news is that it appears that the two sequels of Tintenherz were never published in Hungarian. The publisher intended to publish them, because the book has adverisments for when they'll be coming out, but they're found nowhere in the library catalogs, so I don't think the sequels actually exist.
This is a bit sad.
@Rand al'Thor ^ The sequels by Cornelia Funke, Tintenblut and Tintentod, were not published in Hungarian, it seems.

Q: What narrative techniques and literary devices in The Three-Body Problem required or justified adjustment in the English translation?

Christophe StrobbeIn a postscript to the English translation of Liu Cixin's The Three-Body Problem, Ken Liu drew attention to his approach to the translation work. Ken Liu writes that "differences in linguistic structure and cultural references, are actually easy to resolve". In some cases, he used footnotes for t...

A: Suggest your Lit.SE reading challenges here!

heatherBook challenge: The Kalevala Finnish mythology, in particular the Kalevala, compiled from oral tradition by Elias Lonnrot. Wikipedia's article has links to a selection of free translations as well, including to Project Gutenberg. It is epic poetry. There seems to be only one (rather obscured) re...
