@DLosc heh

@DLosc well it ruined my punchline, boo

also the European and Israeli DST timezone offset changes are coming up this weekend; the American one already happened
I should pay attention to these

I actually forgot about the American one last week

12:05 AM
@DLosc I think either one is infinitesimal enough to make it exceedingly unlikely to be a coincidence.

Or whenever it happened
Anyhow it's 1 am here and I have a tour tomorrow of the Colosseum
Good night!

Q: What are titles of the format "Sadly, X" a reference to?

VividI've seen several books, blog posts, etc. with titles of the form "Sadly, X" over the last few years, enough that I imagine this must be a reference to something with a title (or notable passage) of this form. The most recent is a section header in a Bloomberg column today. But I can't seem to Go...

@verbose There's a minimum of 3 mods for a site, although there have been times in Lit's history where there were fewer than that - e.g. there was a period of half a year or more where it was just me and Slate, and in late 2019 Gallifreyan was carrying it alone for a bit. The mods of the site can request more hands, or the CMs will check in occasionally to see that things are running smoothly.

Q: What is the textual source for the original ending of Austen's Persuasion?

verboseThe Norton Critical Edition of Jane Austen's Persuasion includes two chapters as a supplement to the novel. These chapters, printed under the heading "The Original Ending of Persuasion", portray very differently the circumstances under which Frederick Wentworth proposes to Anne Elliot. In the end...

Q: Name of this (Russian?) story

bissiI am pretty sure it is Russian and a short-story but not 100% sure. Man likes a woman, woman likes him back too. They write letters to each other, but met only once or never. She asks him to meet again and again, but he is unsure of himself because he's poor or ugly and keeps putting it off. Ulti...

Q: In 'The Graveyard Book' by Neil Gaiman, why is one 'Jack' named for a historical person

SpagirlThe book features a group of characters who are members of a fraternal organization, and call themselves: the Jacks of All Trades, or the Knaves, or by other names. We go back an extremely long way. We know ... we remember things that most people have for- gotten. The Old Knowledge. There are f...

I can't decide whether "How many scaramuccis did Liz Truss last as British PM?" should be asked on Politics, History, or Maths SE. 😐

If you're considering Maths.SE, you could also consider CodeGolf.SE--although we'd want it to be generalized a bit. Maybe "Given the name of a UK prime minister, output the length of their tenure in Scaramuccis" (with the appropriate definition of units and info on the tenure of PMs listed in the question).

@PrinceNorthLæraðr Beware of the tigers and come back in one piece!
@Bookworm What is the textual source for the original ending of HNQ?

7:39 PM
@Tsundoku And lions, and bears?

8:00 PM
@DLosc though I'm now sidetracked by the question of whether scaramucci is singular or plural. One scaramucco, many scaramucci? One scaramucci, many scaramuccii?

@DLosc Oh my!

@verbose Hm, I suppose the name might be plural etymologically. On the other hand, there's a long history of re-pluralizing words that already had a different plural ending ("children" being an example); so if we take scaramucci as a (singular) word for a unit of time, I don't see anything wrong with inventing scaramuccis as its plural.
*Scaramuccii, however, is right out, as it would be the plural of a hypothetical word *scaramuccius.

@DLosc re-pluralizing children? Tell me more. I do not know to what you refer

That sounds vaguely dystopian ;-)

> The difficulty with the plural began in Old English, where the nominative plural was at first cild, identical with the singular, then c.975 a plural form cildru (genitive cildra) arose, probably for clarity's sake, only to be re-pluraled late 12c. as children, which is thus a double plural. Middle English plural cildre survives in Lancashire dialect childer and in Childermas. - Etymonline

@Randal'Thor only from the perspective of someone who believes human beings ought to be viviparous
@DLosc fascinating
thank you

"Please surrender your children to the re-pluralisation centre. The process is harmless. Failure to comply will be punished."

Someone has been rereading Brave New World too many times.

We're about to vote in some dictators for life, so everything's a bit dystopian nowadays :-P

@Tsundoku "I don't know what you mean", he said, and took another sip of his soma

8:24 PM
@DLosc Something similar happened in Dutch, which is why some nouns have a plural on -eren; kind (child): kinderen; ei (egg): eieren; gemoed: gemoederen; goed: goederen; kalf: kalveren; volk: volkeren. (The plural on -er is common in German, a rather successful Dutch dialect.)
Further examples: Stapelmeervoud in the Dutch Wikipedia.

Q: William Shakespeare The Tempest

luckyblueUse The Tempest to illustrate some important characteristics of the Renaissance playhouse. Show how the playhouse structure actually shaped the composition of Shakespeare's play.

I wanna roll back this question as the revised version has nothing to do with the original. The revision is closeworthy for different reasons from the original ... but since I v'dtc the original, I can't revtc on the revision or even change my reason
