I love the ocean, but I was wondering what does "the ocean" itself symbolise in regards to both psychology and literature?
When I look up the ocean on Symbolism Wiki it comes up blank (no results)
Moreover, the fact that X was a symbol for Y in some past culture does not automatically mean that it has that same meaning in 20th-century book Z, written at a time when that symbolic meaning might have been forgotten.
I'm annotating an essay by Paul Hensel and he quotes Goethe: "talent is formed in solitude, character in the currents and cataracts of the world." I can't seem to find what the source of this quote is. Any help would be appreciated.
