12:00 AM
now go to sleep!
I command the Tsundoku to zzz

> To sleep, perchance to dream...

@bobble You should tell him "sod off to nod off", a la verbose ;-)

12:29 AM
@Randal'Thor Thanks!

So I saw a question that I could answer with physics
Of course I answered it

Hey, why are you making tag wiki excerpts? >:(

I made one, and updated a few more
is stressed about test
very stressed

I had to get my mom to give me knock-out medicine last night because I couldn't sleep

12:41 AM
@bobble >:( trying to put me out of my job?
@bobble Yikes

Heh, this question now has two answers - my long one and then Mary's tiny one. Funny contrast
(not long long, just long in comparison)

Viscocity vs temperature for water - lmao

?? why is this funny

Idk
Just sounds funny :P
Also, congrats on 7k in Puzzling!

I've been there for a long while
My only rep has been tag excerpt edits
And some votes on old posts, for some reason

12:52 AM
shrugs

@Randal'Thor whyever not? 😈

I get random upvotes on my old posts too
Like I got an upvote the other day on an answer I answered like several months back to Mith's question

I missed this when it rolled around in 2017.
To be fair, the last four months of that year were hellish for me

Okay, I'm going to bike and try to clear my head. Gods, I need to stop stressing about this test grade.

Q: Why does Mr. Pumblechook call Mrs. Joe "mum"?

JR_SchoolI noticed that at the beginning of Great Expectations by Charles Dickens that Mr or Uncle Pumblechook kept calling Mrs. Joe mum. Why is that? I know for sure that Mrs. Joe didn't give birth to that monstrosity, but I still am a bit confused. Is it because of Victorian lifestyle manners?

Q: What is the dialect in "The Origin of White Folks" and what does it add to the poem?

bobbleI found "The Origin of White Folks" by Annie Virginia Culbertson (it's pretty far down the page) while reading a news article and became intrigued by its accent. The poem is clearly written in some dialect: DE white folks nee-nter putt on airs About dem wash'out faces, De culled folks wuz made d...

Good morning to you

> Good morning! Oh, if I don't see you: good afternoon, good evening and good night!

Top o' the morning to you!

Couldn't think of a literary quote, so I took one from a film. I hope I won't get suspended for that ;-)

Well you're a mod. Can mods be suspended?

Hypothetically, I could go to my own user page, and check whether the moderator tools allow me to send a mod message to myself.

3:24 PM

A: Does temporary suspension remove mod powers?

Oded Can mods suspend an other mod? Yes. If a mod is suspended, (but not de-modded), can he use his mod powers? Yes. Including un-suspending themselves. If a mod is suspended, can he use the normal, reputation-bound privileges of the ordinary users? Yes. They are still a moderator, af...

As the Romans said, "Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?"

The CMs

"Quis custodiet CMs?"
It's custodies all the way down. ;-)

How much sleep did you get, Tsundoku?

Not enough. That'll have to wait until the weekend.
Oh, no, that's when I end up writing answers until 3 a.m.
I'll have to set a go-to-bed alarm.

3:33 PM
@bobble suspended mods in chat can also still talk, although the suspension also can't be lifted (without the same hacks the allow for suspending in the first place), if I'm remembering correctly

I am now 11 rep points behind North. Time to edit 6 tags?

Some leaves will be shed tonight ...
@bobble Or you could edit just 5 to increase the tension ;-)
There we go ...
Just 7 reps now.

so close

3:57 PM
@bobble So I have installed an alarm application, with an alarm scheduled at 10:30 p.m.

Will you listen to the alarm, is the question

Indeed. 10:30 p.m. is five and a half hours from now. So if you don't see me disappear around that time, that will be a cause for alarm.

I've been getting random upvotes on my old posts though

NOOOO
I am 1 point behind where you were and now you moved
;-;
Now I passed where you were
Quick, someone upvote my latest question or answer!

@PrinceNorthLæraðr I what way are they "random"? Because they're not recent?

4:04 PM
@Tsundoku Well, several upvotes on my old posts. Within an oddly short time period

Well, we had a very active upvoter recently who got the Electorate badge in an amazingly short amount of time. Or it might be some lurker who's having fun with the both of you.

While going through the tags I got a new question, but I'll wait until the new UTC day to post it

Anyway, you know where you can submit a complaint now.

@Tsundoku Haha
What
We hit maintenance?

4:08 PM
Apparently :-/

is missing a comma in its excerpt

Nothing mentioned on twitter.com/StackStatus
@bobble A Stratford comma or an Oxford comma?

I'm using the site fine
> Questions about the works of William Shakespeare (1564 – 1616), the legendary playwright and poet known as "The Bard" or his life as a writer and theatre shareholder.

Yes, it's up again.

@bobble fixed

4:10 PM
Much better
Why am I like this
North, you have infected me with your tagging
help!

@bobble Hey, stop going through the tags! That's my job >:(

@bobble It's highly infectious. North got it from me. Now you're getting infected from two sides...

I don't like having competition for tagging :P
@Tsundoku What's the name of the disease?

Tagwikitis?

Tagbuculosis?

4:18 PM
The literary works of Charles Darwin?

Well... yes?
Unless his works aren't considered literary?

The Epic of Species, The Odyssey of the Beagle?

'borg!

bobble and north! :D

@Tsundoku Well, you can still ask literary questions about his works
Okay, I'll revise the tag wiki
Oh you fixed it

4:21 PM
'borg, do you have time for a highly non-scientific experiment?

> O Goddess! Sing the wrath of King Kong’s son, ...

As long as it doesn't involve vision, since my diplopia is acting up a bit :p

Browse the front page of Literature and report back with how many question titles you find interesting
This does involve math, if counting is math

Presumably this would be the Active page?

Yes

4:23 PM
@bobble Hey, you can't recruit people like this!

Is there a particular thing this is for?

She's trying to out-rep me

I'm interested, and also there's a meta question about how to attract people to the site
What, I didn't say they should vote on anything

Mostly I'm just here to upvote things since I'm not literary enough to ask questions, if that helps the new user perspective :p

You can totally ask questions!
I have questions that are probably silly here, they got upvotes :D

4:26 PM
It's a bit intimidating ;-;
i just like upvoting good answers

Think about it this way: if you get 24 more rep, then you can also downvote the bad ones

I am so out of touch that I don't know what ;-; means. It's not in this list, for example.

It's crying eyes, I think

Yeah - I'm starting to adopt Gray's text faces :p

@Sciborg Same!
Gray is a master of the emoticons

So we're weird, is my takeaway

I figured this was a given

I stand by my statement:
in PSE D&D Chatroom, Jan 21 at 20:07, by Mithical
it's a d&d chatroom, any hope of not being weird went out the window before a single word was said

4:37 PM
@Mithical They speak the truth!
We really need more gender-neutral terms -_-;

I sent bobble pictures of my hat collection yesterday so i can't even argue with you
@PrinceNorthLæraðr what is gender

I can't use terms like "sir", "sis", "ma'am" or "lady" in a sarcastic sense at Mith. angrily shakes fist

I've always considered "dude" gender-neutral, but i'm from the Midwest so that might not apply everywhere

I call my genderfluid friend "Honorable Justice"

That's a good term

4:40 PM
That's how I wish to be referred to forever, i changed my mind

Half the joke was they would be a better SCOTUS justice than Kavanaugh, this started during his confirmation hearings

Please refer to me as "Honorable Justice Sciborg"

@Sciborg There's boi with an "i"

In Chinese, the words for "he" and "she" are pronounced the same. (And so is the much rarer word for "it".)

@bobble So many people would be better than Kavanaugh

4:41 PM
"Boi" strikes me as gender neutral, maybe

@PrinceNorthLæraðr sure you can, as long as it's in a sarcastic manner :P

@Mithical meh, it doesn't have the same effect

Important Chatroom Goals for today: try to find a gender-neutral way to sarcasm someone

I just gotta find another very formal term, like Honorable Justice

you can go with "Private"

4:43 PM
Hehe

"Private"

"Private!"

"The Private speaks the truth!"

I like "lieutenent"

"Thou still unravish'd bride of quietness" doesn't quite work, does it?

4:43 PM
@PrinceNorthLæraðr yeah but that's not my rank

Not quite, but it is poetic

> I can call tsundokus to their beauty sleep.
> Why, so can I, or so can any clock; but will they go when you do call for them?

"Commander"? :p

To the vasty deep of sleep?
Is this now a cacophony or the beginning of a fugue?

@Mithical That's the point

4:47 PM
@Sciborg "No admittance"

I see what you did there

update on bobble's test: no grades yet, but I was able to sleep without knock-out meds

Yay!

I see you posted another question, North
Methinks our race for rep is being good for the site :D

4:50 PM
Imagine Dragons! :D
i mean uhhh i'm not a casual that's not my favorite band

"Padawan". After all, we never stop learning.

@Sciborg I love this band, @me

Q: What is the "color of boom"?

North LæraðrIn Imagine Dragon's song Polaroid, there's a certain line that gets repeated throughout the song: I am the color of boom What is the meaning of this line? Does it mean like an explosion of color, or like a firework? How does "boom" have a color?

Q: Love is defiled by its defense …

WGroleauDoes anyone know who said this, or something like it? "Love is defiled by its defense." A friend asked on Facebook and got no answer in several days. I vaguely remember reading a similar idea that included the word “heat,” but don’t remember the source. I think it also was something other than “...

the world will know...

@Tsundoku And if you fall, as Lucifer fell, the flames, the swoooooord

this was a mistake

@bobble I see you're also on the first page of users now, congrats!
time to award Fabjaja a bounty

hey, didn't you want chat to be active?

6:52 PM
This reminds me of the Sphinx's Lair when matt and i started chatting when we first met each other and within a few hours it had become a giant conversation and North arrived like "what have you done to our chatroom"

Part of this also may be that I don't hang out in the Lair for chit-chat any more so this is my outlet

7:05 PM
Methinks Imma have to preface all my remarks in this room with "Now, children"
"Children" is gender-neutral, @bobble

only if you want me to call you "geezer"

excuse me, i am a highly mature adult 21-year-old who uses the word "yeet" and wears silly hats, you have no right to patronize me. now if you'll excuse me i need to email my doctor because calling people is scary

@bobble I've been called worse

@verbose I'm going to start calling you šŏ because I like anagrams.

"geezer" isn't gender-neutral, is it? I associate it with men
@Randal'Thor I like anagrams too, but I don't get it

7:10 PM
so breve

ohhhh

@bobble why, incidentally?

@Mithical I just assumed because we're cooler

in PSE D&D Chatroom, Jan 30 at 21:49, by bobble
the absurdly quick summary, from my end, is: I was doing what I thought were routine moderation tasks, and one user got very, very upset and started vigorously defending themselves/attacking me (it got blurry, I'm not sure which)
Started in comments, I said "I'm not going to respond any more" and they took it into chat

7:32 PM
@Sciborg Bwahaha yes

What's happening here again? You're singing Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat?

Among other things

7:55 PM
@Randal'Thor I guess -v would have been too obvious.

Q: Did Pushkin ever deliberately copy the style of anyone else?

DVKBeginning, or less talented, writers often consciously or subconsciously imitate the style of earlier creators. Are any works by Pushkin (past the age of 20) known to copy someone else's style, especially on purpose - as a tribute, or any other reason. (I want to exclude parodies where the copy...

@Bookworm I came up with my own idea for an answer to this while writing the question, but I'll wait and see what other people come up with first.

Q: What would it mean for a 19th-century German soldier to "wear the cross"?

Rand al'ThorIn the first chapter of Theodor Fontane's Effi Briest, we are introduced to the character of Baron Geert von Innstetten as follows (emphasis mine): "Yes, compose yourself and I'll begin. We were speaking of Baron von Innstetten. Before he had reached the age of twenty he was living over in Rathe...

(just interested: what was your idea?)

9:41 PM
Wow, only 1/9 of questions are answered - and that's just one looking for a translation. There aren't any answered textual-analysis ones.

9:54 PM
@bobble Um. Let me try to remember.

Jeopardy! music plays in the background

I think my idea was that that period of time includes a lot of character development which is more easily portrayed by jumping from before to after, and showing how now they all respect each other's different abilities and know how to work together well.
See the paragraph that begins "Since leaving the warren of the snares they had become warier, shrewder, a tenacious band who understood each other and worked together." It's a bit of telling not showing, but then the showing comes later, and it might've been hard to show that development happening gradually.
Even one of the quotes I've included in the question mentions it: "The encounter with the rats in the barn had been no joke and had proved their worth [Bigwig and Silver as fighters]."
The rat encounter, and that whole period of 1-2 days, can be referred back to later as something character-building for all of them, without needing to describe it all in detail.

quite plausible!
