7:26 AM
Good morning @Malavika! I'm looking forward to it :)

user185131
Oh, is there such a list?

user185131
:D

user185131
I see, I'm not familiar with any of those users a priori, I'm sure.

user185131
Quite possible. There's a dedicated chatroom for that on both Math SE and Physics SE, I think?

user185131
7:38 AM
When I was preparing for CSIR-NET and other exams I used to participate in the dedicated chatroom for that on Math SE :) It's still going strong, so there are people on SE continually interested in it

user185131
Appadiya, I've never hung around in the Physics chatroom :) I've always been a bit poor in Physics, actually. :P Found it difficult to pick up any intuition

user185131
I can't understand many of the top voted answers to simple questions in Physics SE too. :P

user185131
7:55 AM
It sounds like a play on Gauss' famous quote about Number Theory - I think he said "Mathematics is the queen of the sciences, and number theory the queen of mathematics". Gauss himself is called the Prince of Mathematics

user185131
8:08 AM
@Malavika Wow! Such people are really incredible. I'm sure it's not only about teaching well, but also motivating the student to do their best and believe in themselves.

user185131
9:05 AM
@Malavika Hahaha, what would you do to get scoldings? XD

user185131
10:10 AM
@Malavika Hahahahahahaha

user185131
11:33 AM
Are you still in touch with her? :)

user185131
Maintain that connection as much as you can - there are so many important threads of life connected by memory. :)

user185131
11:51 AM
So, I've joined a Bhagawad Gita class recently :)

user185131
Yeah, classes are happening over Zoom, 4 times a week

user185131
Hi @user2566752, welcome!

user185131
@Malavika Yeah, 900 rupees per month, to be paid every month. I've only attended one class so far, but it was quite interesting I should say :)

user185131
:)

user185131
I think it's high time I made this lockdown period productive! This is one step in that direction :)

user185131
11:56 AM
@Malavika Shall we start today's session? :) I'd like to begin by introducing one aspect of the ragam Hamsanādam.

user185131
@Malavika Let me know if you're interested, I can forward you the details of this Bhagawad Gita course. They run other courses for Sanskrit grammar and spoken Sanskrit too. Of course, I'm sure these things are available online too, nowadays.

user185131
Awesome :)

user185131
To begin with, Hamsanādam is an Audava-Audava ragam with the following scale:
Arohanam: S R2 M2 P N3 S
Avarohanam: S N3 P M2 R2 S

user185131
The first song I learnt in this ragam is Tyagaraja's Banturiti kolu:

user185131
12:01 PM
A sprightly rendition by MLV (6 minutes long)

user185131
The way MLV takes the last sangati of the Anupallavi - "gula jeyu nija" - is how my guru also taught me. Others take it slightly differently

user185131
Incidentally, I think it's Sudha Ragunathan providing vocal support in this recording, if I'm not mistaken.

user185131
Niraval from approximately 3:00 minutes in, and kalpana swarams from around 4:24, at the line "Ramanama mane" in the charanam.

user185131
Now, the interesting thing I wanted to point out was that there is an anya swaram in Hamsanādam, in the way it is sung in older traditions. Although it is not recorded in the usual arohanam/avarohanam, the Shatshruthi Dhaivatam, or D3, can occur in this ragam!

user185131
@Malavika I don't know whether I've mentioned this before, I sometimes forget and end up repeating the same thing to the same people :D

user185131
12:13 PM
Thank god XD

user185131
Notice that this kriti Bantu riti does not use D3 anywhere. For the longest time, I never knew that Hamsanādam has this also as an anya swaram.

user185131
What happened was that I listened to this recording of an Akashvani relay of a concert by MLV, which opens with her singing a round of kalpana swarams in Hamsanadam:

user185131
And suddenly at 1:53 you can hear a dhaivatam drop in the middle!

user185131
No mistake because there's another one two seconds later

user185131
12:19 PM
(The entire round of sarvalaghu swarams in the higher octave is a thing of beauty! Gives me goosebumps every time.)

user185131
Really fascinating stuff! Naturally the next step was to find out more information, and if anyone has dealt with this aspect more deeply

user185131
And of course, the highly innovative composer of the last century Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavathar comes to our rescue

user185131
Hang on, unable to locate the recording

user185131
Ah, found it! Rendered by the great TN Seshagopalan, a direct disciple of Muthiah Bhagavathar:

user185131
12:25 PM
I should also correct myself - I keep using the term "anya" swaram, where "vivadi" swaram might be better.

user185131
TNS has a lot of fun with the dhaivatam in the alapanai, and the composition also uses it liberally, especially in the chittai swaram portion

user185131
This is what I wanted to share :)

user185131
Lastly, I just came across this Isai Payanam extract of Charulatha Mani in which she discusses Hamsanadam. She points out the use of D3 in the "old" Hamsanadam:

user185131
She points out the old version at around a minute and a half.

user185131
12:40 PM
Yes, Charulatha Mani points out a few, I just reached that portion, hang on :) youtu.be/WW1R4ZlWtZA?t=578

user185131
Iravum Nilavum Valarattume from the movie "Karnan", sung by P. Susheela and TMS

user185131
Thendral Vanthu Ennai Thodum composed by Ilaiyaraaja, sung by Yesudas

user185131
Another by Ilaiyaraaja, Sorgame Endralum:

Sorry dude! I forgot to show up on Sunday @Brahadeesh
This event notification made me join this chatroom again :P

user185131
@TheLittleNaruto No problem buddy, it wasn't urgent after all :)

@Brahadeesh Thanks! Well let's setup another time? This time for sure I'll show up.
@Malavika Hey Thanks :)

user185131
@Malavika The kalpana swaram is terrific, very reminiscent of Semmangudi!

user185131
@TheLittleNaruto Yeah, let's do that. How about I ping you on Sunday evening this time?

12:58 PM
@Brahadeesh Yeah that's great! Sundays are lockdown here
So I can make it

user185131
@Malavika Interesting, MS's version of the ending to the anupallavi is also unique.

@Malavika hehe nice

user185131
Awesome!

user185131
Wait, what's the name of the chat event again? I totally forgot what I created :P

user185131
Ah okay, found it :D

user185131
1:02 PM
Hahahahahahaha

user185131
I tried singing the three versions of the last sangati of the pallavi here: voca.ro/jmULHg3JN3c

user185131
Forgive the extremely poor voice quality, I'm trying to be quiet, actually :P

user185131
@Malavika It's quite curious, out of the 6 users with generic usernames who have registered for this chat event, all but one have only 1 rep in all their accounts across the network.

user185131
Ugh, I'm going to delete that recording soon. The more I listen to it, the more the cringe increases. XD

user185131
1:23 PM
@TheLittleNaruto Just dropped by in Hinduism SE and saw that the sidebar has an overflowing URL. Filed a bug report on Meta SE: meta.stackexchange.com/q/350498/313042

user185131
Weird!

user185131
1:39 PM
@Malavika @TheLittleNaruto See you around, I'll take a break away from my laptop for some time now :)

1:51 PM
@Brahadeesh Good bug finding! +1
@Brahadeesh Sure :)
@Brahadeesh In your spare time, you may want to finish new github account registration by username "Ragamalika"
