Q: Geometry of critical points of holomorphic maps in projective space

SamueleLet $f:\mathbb{CP}^n\to\mathbb{CP}^n$ be a holomorphic map; I am interested in what the subvariety of critical points could be. More specifically, let $J=\{p\in \mathbb{CP}^n\ :\ \det\mathrm{Jac}(f)=0\}$: can $J$ be a smooth submanifold of $\mathbb{CP}^n$? can $J$ be an irreducible subvariety of...

Q: Editing old question, can't submit as title is too long

David RobertsI'm editing Is there a canonical map from the cohomology of orbifold Chiral de Rham on an orbifold to the cohomology of Chiral de Rham on a crepant resolution? as there was a broken arXiv Front link (and I took the opportunity to add some paper titles in). But I cannot submit the edit as the ques...

Replace "between" with "from" and "and" with "to" and you're golden. — Asaf Karagila ♦ 6 hours ago
Sure, but what if it were too long to play a simple trick like that? Looking for discussion around policy here. What was the old character count? How bad could it get? — David Roberts 6 hours ago
I've done the question edit, with your title suggestion @Asaf, but the point still stands. — David Roberts 6 hours ago

Q: Unfortunate title length limitation when performing dead link maintenance

SE - stop firing the good guysThis question about disc projections has a link to an animation of a Reuleaux triangle spinning inside a square. "That sounds cool, I want to see what that looks like!", I thought. Unfortunately, the link was dead, but through the internet archive I was able to track down the original animation, ...

@MartinSleziak thanks for that. Do we know any of the reasons behind how this difficulty arises? — David Roberts 13 mins ago
@DavidRoberts Well, as you said yourself, the only reasonable explanation is that the limit used to be longer. I did not find exactly when it was changed, but in 2015 it was already at 150: Edit to an old question cannot be saved because title too long, (Maybe you'll have better luck in finding some info on this change.) SEDE returns 126 posts with titles longer than 150 characters: data.stackexchange.com/mathoverflow/query/1568947/… Here are results of the query from the linked post... — Martin Sleziak 3 mins ago
... data.stackexchange.com/mathoverflow/query/363314. Maybe in this context it is also worth reminding what is the recommendation from here: How to write a good MathOverflow question?: "Titles are allowed to be anywhere from 15 to 150 characters long. 140 characters (the length of a tweet) takes up about two full lines on the home page, so try to keep it less than that." (See the link to read the whole advice on titles as stated in the post - I have included only a brief excerpt.) — Martin Sleziak 1 min ago

Q: Edit to an old question cannot be saved because title too long

Kristijan IlievI tried to edit an old question and when I hit Save Edits it showed me this error, even though I didn't touch the title. Is there a new constraint, and if so, how can one possibly edit an old question without changing (shortening) its title?

A: Edit to an old question cannot be saved because title too long

reneIn the database the title is 250 characters, so somewhere back in the day the titles were longer. The limit is now 150. That hurts when you edit an old question from before the limit was lowered. You have no other option than to edit the title, maybe salvaging relevant info by moving it in the bo...

Questions with long titles (sorted by CreationDate): MathOverflow
The most recent question I see there is from 2013: mathoverflow.net/posts/133617/revisions
Maybe it might be useful to created also a network-wide query to look at all sites. (But I do not have time to do that right now.)
I will just point out that I did not get any results on Stack Overflow or Mathematics.
Another query which might possibly be useful in this context could be looking at PostHistory to get questions which had longer titles at some point in the past - but since then the title have been edited.

@Martin The last >150 char question was on the 13th June 2013 (there were usually only a handful a month and there were two in that June), and it seems MathOverflow 1.0 was turned off on the 24th (see last post). So it's very likely a 1.0->2.0 effect. — David Roberts 3 mins ago

The revision from 19th June 2013 had title above 150 characters - and it was shortened in a later edit: mathoverflow.net/posts/134158/revisions
On Stack Overflow I had to run the query several times (execution time expired), but eventually I got some results. Strangely, there are also some results from 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.
The second one expired each time I ran it: data.stackexchange.com/stackoverflow/query/1568961/…

Actually "cohomology of orbifold chiral de Rham on an orbifold" sounds so clumsy that I don't see what exactly "chiral de Rham" refers to. — YCor 59 mins ago

Titles with length over 150 characters

This post seems to be the announcement that the lenght was changed from 250 to 150 characters:

A: Length limit for question titles that have nothing to do with Unicorns (we don't really need that many characters just for the title, do we? Isn't that what the question body is for? Some lower length limit would help here. Seriously.)

Jeff AtwoodI'd need to analyze existing question title length to get a sense of what the maximum length should be. Suggestion of "one line". This of course varies per font and characters used, but for this post it is: Length limit for question titles that have nothing to do with Unicorns (we don’t reall...

> I agree with the data presented here. When people enter > 150 characters in title, the odds of it being egregiously wrong are … high. The new question title length limit has been reduced from 250 characters to 150 characters.
@theHigherGeometer If you decide to include some information from the linked post and the queries into the question, then my comment might no longer be needed. (Moreover, most of them is here in chat - so they can basically be replaced by one link to chat.)
If you think that cleaning up comments (after including some information into the question) would be a good idea, simply let me know and I can deleted the comments that are no longer needed.

The same query if I exclude rollbacks: https://data.stackexchange.com/stackoverflow/query/1568960/questions-which-had-long-titles-at-some-point?types=1,4 No longer any results after 2010 from Stack Overflow.
