@MartinSleziak FWIW from my recollection retagging "topology"-tagged questions back in the day, I think it is not a good idea to create a synonym into gn.general-topology. Users not rarely used it as a tag more general than at.algebraic-topology, gt.geometric-topology etc and in that case the retag seems unhelpful.

Put differently there was a reason the tag then was not simply merged into gn.general-topology

Thanks for the reply @quid. BTW I was not able to find any old discussions with the decision that the topology tag should be deprecated. Do you happen to remember whether this was discussed on tea?

The revision of the tag-excerpt is from June 2013.

And speaking of the synonym:

@MartinSleziak I have no particular recollection of such a discussion. The tag-wiki almost instantly after MO migrated into the SE network, and thus the feature became available. geometry was also deprecated then. It seems likely François decided it then. But there was some mention of the topology tag in the tagging threads IIRC; but deleted by now. But maybe just when it was completed. Ricardo Andrade finished it.

Please feel free to use the information in whatever way you like. If I would not have wanted it to be known, I would just not have said anything. But also I do not want to come across as somebody giving unasked advice on things that are none of their business (anymore).
