English Language & Usage: Multi-Layer

Not for the faint of heart or those easily triggered by English (or other languages) in the raw. That doesn't mean we want to talk about YouTube comments or hemorrhoids or other such topics.

@Alexander I don't want to see glorification of your own murder of civilians here, "we are happy we murdered a civilian" is not acceptable.

@Vikas I was making nonsense out of the sounds b,d,n,g that you used and in the message you replied to.(I kind of thought that's what you were doing too though)

@alphabet It is always nice to talk to someone who speaks well. It is just much less important in many positions, but it is always a positive.

@Mitch I think the first step would always have been about preventing Israel from treating Palestinians like vermin to be exterminated. Political solutions have been impossible for as long as I remember because 1) they're not even popular among either of the peoples and 2) Palestinians recently haven't had people who they could call their representatives

I see this catchphrase "tu dolor es verme" on pickup trucks and memes ... I imagine what Google Translate offers for the English equivalent falls a bit short. Anybody understand what it's really about?

> And they departed to a distant shore;
But wheresoe'er they dwelt, however lone,
Shame, like a marble statue at his door,
Flung her 'thwart shadow o'er his threshold stone;
Still darken'd all their daylight hours, and kept
Cold watch above them even while they slept.

Word of the day: aircrafts. The nonstandard regularized plural has shown up in news articles, even one from the Times's "The Athletic." Ngram suggests it may be catching on, though it's still very rare.

@alphabet I think it is best to let go of the idea that what most pages on the Internet have is the best way to use a word.

Word of the day: mischievous. Dictionaries still insist that the more common (or even the only) pronunciation is /-vəs/, but (from a cursory examination on YouGlish) the /-viəs/ pronunciation is clearly more common even in very formal contexts, and even the spelling with "-vious" is fairly widespread.

People should just be more lenient, more tolerant. Maybe you (I mean EA, FF, etc) don't like it or are too smart for it, but let other people answer it. There's room for everything.

“All of us want to be completely alive, to live one hundred percent in the present moment. What prevents us? More urgently, how can we bring about such a state of mind?
The great American psychologist [William James] gives us a clue in a quotation I found in a most unexpected place, Vogue magazine. This is a direct quotation: ‘The faculty of voluntarily bringing back a wandering attention, over and over again, is the very root of judgment, character, and will. An education which should include this faculty would be the education par excellence.’
