@ND523 What is needed is good writers and time to create complex quests and interactions. Both were readily available 20 years ago. I fail to see what technology exists nowadays that would make things much better. At least if such technology existed there would be better RPG made nowadays, and that's not the case. Current RPG have usually duller characters because they cost so much to make that the editors want to appeal to all audiences.

"Just like with most things in game development, it's not the idea which matters, but the execution" Amen. Whether or not it's a good, enjoyable game will have a much, much larger impact on sales than whether two characters are lesbians or not.

Do you have any actual critique of that video which is not just an unsubstantiated ad-hominem attack on the creators? Considering that your answer doesn't exactly go into Extra Credit's bonafides as a video game authority, so you seemingly posted it because of your opinion on about it, asking for citations and evidence for the contrary opinion is a bit hypocritical.

"Just recently have we discovered that the medium can tell much deeper stories with much more complex characters than we thought." What? Some games from 20 years ago had deeper characters than most current games.

Note that Extra Credits is a fairly heavily biased source, so take what they say with a teaspoon of salt.
