Yes! What are you all doing in here? Go out and see the world and create solve more problems.
Aug 27, 2017 06:17
I really tried, I voted, and I protested, and I protested again... I'm likely to continue protesting. We're really not all bad, I promise.

@apaul34208 it depends on how obvious the comments are. If they're "+1 this is awesome", individual flags are better. If it's a long chain of crap that needs more context, flagging the entire post is better... but each mod has their own process. I tend to click through to the post unless it's clearly a chatty comment. Not everyone does that. I know a lot of mods who prefer individual flags rather than having to hunt through 30 comments for the ones that need to die. — Catija ♦ 5 mins ago

Q: This one wierd trick gets rid of all off-topic comments. Let's use it!

HamletThis is a site that gets a lot of off-topic comments, comments that really are answers, chatty comments that should be posted in chat, etc. I frequently flag these comments, but it's like I'm fighting an uphill battle. Every time I flag one comment thread, I find another. It really would be nice ...

@OldPadawan - no need to VTC spam, just flag it and move on. If you start to VTC spam, people will think to just VTC and not flag. So please just flag. Thanks :)

@SQB and let me reiterate that for 90% of questions, europe is not an appropriate scope.

@Hamlet let me reiterate that one should use a locational tag of appropriate scope.

So I have little sympathy for smokers. They murder everyone who comes in range of their smoke. That is no exaggeration.
Aug 24, 2017 10:56
Speaking as someone who suffers from COPD, I cannot be around "vaping" any more than smoking, so I think all anti-smoking regulations and laws need to apply to vaping.
Aug 23, 2017 18:05
we call that "rubberducking" in my field, you seem less mad that way
Aug 23, 2017 07:08
Yeah, I often use favorites as a 'bookmark' as well.

@Beofett people like this - do not understand the experience of being a minority group and carry a chip that anything that smells of positive discrimination is somehow discriminating against them. They truly do not grasp that we're not always on a level playing field and people are just trying to level it. It's like the attitudes so many people have towards Aboriginals here. They cannot see that their own mentality is the reason these people need to be helped to be able to compete fairly.
Aug 22, 2017 23:49
@gracious1 I totally understand - I'm a conscience feminist and people sometimes construe that to mean I don't like men - nothing is farther from the truth - I love men always have - always will. It's not just about educating people about the experience that women have, but also empowering women to feel they are good enough and supported.

I am looking at my cat sleeping, and wishing I could sleep.
Aug 22, 2017 08:27
Short comments that begin with +1 are automatically deleted after one flag because they're considered noise.

@Hamlet Really? I would say, the number of good users have increased. That's a plus.

Q: Public Service Announcement: Let's be a bit more civil about divisive topics

HDE 226868Note: I originally posted this in chat; I've decided to write it here as well as per the advice of apaul34208 and NVZ, to get it more attention. Hi, all. I'm here to write a message about some recent problems we've had. Specifically, I'm addressing those who participated in How to respond when t...

@HDE226868 In real life I would absolutely get branded with the term
Aug 21, 2017 19:49
@Hamlet Ah, yes. I go to a college where 25% of the student population would likely be branded with that term, and it annoys the heck out of me. Yeah, it is totally possible to be overzealous when it comes to social justice (and that's a real, neutral term). Yeah, people can be overexcited. But it's being used as a huge blanket statement, and it's definitely being used as an insult.
Aug 21, 2017 19:49
@NVZ as a mod, I would prefer if people flagged specific problematic comments than if I got an auto flag
Aug 21, 2017 17:55
We need to discuss answers that disagree with the question on meta at some point. Shog's answer somewhere mentions it.
NVZ
Aug 21, 2017 17:51
@HDE226868 If you'd like more people to see it, you may post it on meta. Meta is also used for PSA (announcements) of sorts, especially when done by Moderators.

@BradleyWilson badges (mostly) encourage good behavior. Going after badges isn't necessarily a bad thing - the whole point of reputation and badges is so that people will want them and do things to earn them.

The millennials are going to have plenty to struggle with: global warming and all the disruptions (e.g., massive population movements) that will bring; incursion of AI into formerly secure white collar jobs; unbelievable coarsening of political life; terrorism brought to your doorstep as has been in London, Paris, and a few days ago, Barcelona. Enjoy your easy life while you can (if you can, with those large college debts). And good luck! — ab2 6 hours ago

@Hamlet "Essentially, how do you politely respond to a random stranger that tries to 'check your privilege'?"
Aug 19, 2017 22:10
@Hamlet Why should it be closed?
Aug 19, 2017 07:42
I.e.: Mourn not that which cannot be. Celebrate instead that which was.
Aug 18, 2017 07:31
you've got it all figured out @NVZ
Aug 18, 2017 03:02
@GypsySpellweaver Strong wording, sure. But deleting it or getting bothered by it sort of proves the point. Sometimes hearing things that make you uncomfortable is good. Lets you really think about whether they are true or not. I know my generation hasn't had to deal with nearly as much crap as people my age 30 or 50 or 70 years ago... the piddly things we fret over are nothing by comparison.
Aug 17, 2017 20:27
@Zizouz212 people downvote for disagreement and upvote for agreement rather than content and citations. I agree.
Aug 17, 2017 19:29
I am pointing out that one of your most productive users NVZ joined this site through HNQ, so will others! In that case maybe we can take dome drawbacks, @Zizouz212?
Aug 17, 2017 15:26
Oh - I just realised your two chat room bots. Those are awesome: who decided on the names and icons?
Aug 17, 2017 12:39
@RoryAlsop ha ha. Sure. :) I'm trying to post questions about social norms rather than "what should I do in this situation?" questions.

Aug 14, 2017 20:35
@ExtrovertedMainMan You maniac. What did you do to em?
Aug 14, 2017 20:19
I'm not sure that closeness applies. I do my best to respond to people the same way regardless of how I feel about them. It's not easy. But if I feel that someone was out of line I will say that. Right now I'm in "take it to meta" mode because that's what we absolutely need here. People need to be actually discussing things on meta, not making decisions in chat that have no consensus.
NVZ
Aug 14, 2017 19:59
@Catija Sure, I can live with that. Let's meet halfway. It would perhaps have avoided this sort of mess if you had not written your comment starting with "Can we please stop.." and removing our comments almost the minute they were posted. Your comment was, honestly, stingy.
Aug 14, 2017 12:03
@NVZ hey, if you're going to direct someone to another site who has asked an extremely low quality question, please tell them that they need to improve their question before asking it there.
