I agree. And dumping shog sent a lot of shockwaves through the moderator crew (at least the ones who cared).

I can't help but wonder if it leads to atmosphere that deters new posters from participating. I know I would hesitate.

I would like you invite you all to be more thoughtful on your reviews. Reviewing is important for the community and for the content we curate. Its also an important responsibility, as taking it lightly may result in work-able posts to be misjudged and, ultimately, the OP not getting an answer/help.

@localhost you've just escaped a PIP via health reasons, I wouldn't be antagonising your manager any more than absolutely necessary. Is it right that your manager was rude to you? Of course not. But principles won't pay the bills whereas pragmatism might

I woke this morning determined to eat healthier, drink less and exercise more, but that was hours ago, and I was younger then and full of dreams and ideals.

"REverSe RACIsM iS ACtuAl RAciSm. " - I didn't use the term "reverse racism", because it is incoherent. The phenomenon I refer to is, in fact, racism. It is objectively wrong of you to deny this, and your mockery is counter to the Code of Conduct.

PSA: Please don't make up pronouns as doing these can be interpreted as mocking the people who we're trying to include. We're asking for people to be respected, not feel mocked and further marginalized.

I'm not sure you can equate the Monica situation with whatever the hell Fattie would have done.

I really don't want to be draconian about this, but making up pronouns as a way of mocking the policy isn't helping and isn't particularly funny. The way that this change was communicated and the wider fallout isn't great, but the underlying reason for this is one of respect for everyone using the network of sites and shouldn't be forgotten.

I realise there’s a lot going on here. But if anyone posts anything into the chatroom that doesn’t look acceptable or is just trolling, please flag it. There’s lots of moderators to help out here, please use them to keep this room clean and respectful. Thank you.

To reiterate: if you cannot abide by the SE "be nice" policy, do not be surprised if you lose the ability to participate here. If somebody is misbehaving, flag and disengage. Throwing oil on the fire, or rounding up matches and kindling to start your very own fire, is Not OK. If the "rudeness" you see is only "that person disagrees with me" do not waste moderators' time with flags.

It's possible to disagree on the internet. there are respectful and disrespectful ways to do this - making the argument about the other person almost always will end poorly in that regard

@RichardU, @DoritoStyle there's been a lot of discussion in here, mostly not about workplace stuff, recently. Clearly you disagree with each other. You're not being rude or anything, but it's been going for a while and I'm concerned that it's driving others out. Could you please find another venue for the political discussion? Thank you. Alternatively, if you've reached the point of "I'm never going to convince you", maybe it's time to just stop.

@RichardU The fact that The Workplace lost all of its active mods over this certainly had an impact. I haven't seen if any other communities had that happen. I don't judge any mod for either going or staying. My issue wasn't about the intent of the new CoC, I already use anyone's preferred name, gender and pronouns, be they new or existing terms. My problem with this whole thing was the CoC's inflexibility and how Monica was treated. Monica was treated incredibly badly. Wrong, just wrong.

So, now for a happy note for a sad story: I found out that my brother's company never let him go out on disability but paid his full salary and benefits during his illness, right to the day of his death. The owners then contacted his widow and specifically asked if they were okay financially and to let them know if they needed any help. There are still good people in this world.

SE irritation of the week - people who write answers that start off "I know nothing about x"and then proceed to write a lengthy and incorrect answer to x There's nothing wrong with not knowing about something - you can just move on and answer something you do know about instead of wasting everyone's time.

Aug 30, 2023 00:19
Like, it starts with an irrelevant paragraph about how "gangs of Black people" torture whites. "To be fair, most of my Black coworkers seem moderate", a largely irrelevant rally against inclusive workplace culture. "[Being considerate to Black people is a fashionable cause]", '[As a white westerner] I may have an extraordinarily highly developed sense of fairness and egalitarianism"

Should this answer be removed or at least heavily edited? It comes across as quite racist tbh https://workplace.stackexchange.com/questions/192948/should-i-send-an-email-to-african-american-colleagues-given-a-recent-nearby-targ#answer-192969

I don't have the reputation to comment on that answer itself

@Helena This post is part of a recent pattern of troll accounts posting questions and answers that are agism related. This particular post has been removed and the account suspended. As per the earlier message (see starred messages on the right), please flag any posts that seem to be related to agism as this will help us to verify whether they are on the level or not.

@MaskedMan take your complaints somewhere else. This is the third day that Workplace chat has been largely about your complaints about another site. It's driving people away, it's been largely non-constructive, and it needs to stop now. Stack Exchange does not owe you a platform.

Well. So. Uh. @Draken (and FYI rest of chat): after some investigative work I've gone ahead and suspended 8 accounts for sockpuppet violations. I've revoked a number of bounties and deleted some posts. Given that the sheer scale will make this quite noticeable I figured I'd give you a heads-up. Thanks again for bringing this to our attention.

@Kilisi As someone who by almost anyone's definition of "white person" is a white person, I find it annoying when "white people" are lumped together as if we are some monolithic homogeneous group of like-thinking Borg.

Q: Dear Stack Exchange: a statement and a letter from your moderators

ArtOfCodeDear Stack Exchange, Inc., We know you know about this already, so we'll keep this brief. The past two weeks have been rough. Lots of moderators have lost confidence in you; for some, it was the final straw. For many of us, though, we like being here and we don't want it to get to that point. So...

And now, it's time for the Old Lamplighter's cranky rant about words he'd like to see banned:

* Problematic
* Toxic
* Unpack
* Proactive
* anything ending with "ist", "ism", "ic", or "phobe"
* mansplaining
* diversity
* inclusion
* representation
* empowerment
* engagement
* marginalized

And before anyone flips, we should all be good to each other. I don't like those words because they're generally used by people who's motives are less than pure. None of these words really mean anything on their own, and are most often used to bully people.
