"The real problem is that programmers have spent far too much time worrying about efficiency in the wrong places and at the wrong times; premature optimization is the root of all evil (or at least most of it) in programming." - Knuth, The Art of Computer Programming

"The cruelest differential equation" is when you're in the shower running out of hot water. You turn up the temp, which drains the hot water faster, making the temp drop faster until it's cold and there's nothing you can do about it.

"Don't elect fascist nationalists" seems like an interesting lesson we could have learned once and been done with, and moved on to something novel instead.

My conjecture is that eventually every "not like traditional TV" service becomes just like traditional TV.

You jump so easily to "I guess this means it's impossible" when all you can really conclude is "I don't like the first idea I thought of so far"

Okay. Chat has gone several years with much more lax moderation. Because of a few recent incidents, among other things, there's now a drive to enforce the rules more, and to do so more consistently. That means things that might have been ignored because they were borderline previously are now not going to get ignored.

For reference, "be nice" doesn't come with some kind of "culturally contextual" disclaimer regarding whether or not two people having a conversation "understand eachother," or similar. It's not about understanding that something is a joke or not, it's not about somebody ability or inability to perceive something as a joke, and those kinds of arguments in defense of objectionable statements will not hold any water.

I admire the optimism and motivation of all those individuals with mmorpgs projects who also asks the most basic programming questions on GDSE. More power to them; Whatever the outcome it's a great learning experience.

There are a lot of ugly things you can do with micro-transactions. There are a lot of ugly things you can do without them, too. And anybody who is going to go put themselves on a pedestal, look down, and condemn game developers in a blanket statement for finding an effective, different way to monetize the hard work and long hours that tend to go into game development (for, I might add, low pay on average)... anybody who wants to do that can fuck right off.

So I'm working at a client and the computer they gave me is acting all crappy. Takes like 3 minutes to install a mouse driver. I checked the task manager to find that CPU and RAM weren't the problem though I was surprised that RAM was at 80% utilization because they said that it was a "pretty beefy machine." I checked the system settings to find this i.imgur.com/nBuNuBg.png ---- facedesk

Time was, there was a member of the research / dev group wrote some code. In said code, was mostly the expected sort of thing. The conspicuous exception were some variables with people names. I.E. instead of something like PatrollingAgent01 it was Alice. When asked about it, he said something like "I couldn't come up with a good name that conveyed meaning, so I tried to pick an obviously bad one to avoid leading others to bad assumptions about its behavior."

Again, if you're to solo dev on this project, it's fine. But if you're to work with some other devs, reducing the amount of WTF to 0 is something you should want.
