Q: The Many Memes of Meta

TheTXICatchphrases and concepts that spread from person to person are known as memes, which, courtesy the Internet, can now explode across the Earth like a highly contagious virus (hence "going viral"). As with their real-life counterparts, some infectious diseases are global (pandemic), while others a...

Q: Biweekly topic challenge #1: Space

HDE 226868Yesterday I wrote up a post asking if people would like weekly - now biweekly topic challenges. The answer from the community was a resounding yes. So today will be the first one. As per some of the suggestions, I'm going to start with tags that have seen a decent amount of activity but still ar...

Jan 28, 2015 12:24
I blame Terry Pratchet
Jan 28, 2015 11:16
come back and tell me that once you've been working for a few years instead of school ;)
Jan 26, 2015 10:47
So if you want to leave both in your question that's fine. You might (no guarantees but it's possible) get better or more in depth answers if you split them. You might get better joined up answers if you don't. Your call really

But it relies too much on the link in my opinion.
Jan 7, 2015 19:57
Is anyone interested in a fantasy writers forum offshoot?
Jan 7, 2015 15:18
For using gimp and/or photoshop you really want a graphics tablet, they make a huge difference
Jan 5, 2015 16:08
@TimB I'm not really concerned about the numbers. It's hard work destroying worlds...trying to eat turkey and destroy planets at the same time is just crazy. Plus...in-laws.

Will they still pay attention to UTC from the colony on Alpha Centauri, I wonder?

Q: How do we feel about questions that have the possibility of offending people?

JamesSo in the sandbox, Sandbox for Proposed Questions, I have a question about violence and religion posted. In the comments a concern was raised about answering the question for fear of offending someone. Is this a valid concern, i.e. should the question be scrapped? Obviously the intent of the...

Yaaaaay for stability.
Dec 17, 2014 17:08
Also I wanted to post this amid the discussion here: meta.worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/questions/83/…
Dec 17, 2014 16:25
"Of course none of the last three to vote bothered to comment. That's bad form guys." - whiny and blaming the messenger

Q: A sandbox for sculpting questions

githubphagocyteOver on PPCG.SE they have a sandbox on meta where questions can get feedback before being posted to the main site. That's vital when designing a programming challenge question that must be precisely specified, but less important on other stack exchange sites where problems with a question can jus...

Are these weasels prepared to die for the cause?
Dec 16, 2014 14:12
I have brought shame on my family.
Dec 16, 2014 02:26
I took the freedom to make the answer shorter by deleting the unnecessary part. It's still bad and I'm not sure it really answer the question but it's easier to read IMHO.

A: Is there a scientifically sound faster-than-light travel system for a spaceship?

Neil SlaterI will take "scientifically sound" to be "we are sure of the principles involved, and need technologies with better precision, more energy, or need to experiment with the engineering. In practice the solution might be very hard, and centuries away from being a normal technology." I would count nu...

Thinking about it I think the problem will actually just become more drawn out.
Dec 15, 2014 14:28
What is the maximum distance a probe could travel without guidance before needing further instructions?
Dec 8, 2014 23:52
@DannyReagan Is Randal Munroe on SE? .....he would be a great asset around here! ;-)
Nov 26, 2014 17:05
@TimB I suspect there was quite an interesting conversation going on that day
Nov 26, 2014 16:25
Hey, I've just been told I'm Outspoken. I was wondering when that would happen. :-)
Nov 26, 2014 15:54
@DannyReagan there's certainly overlap. :-) (Some of the what-ifs would be off-topic here, but most would fit right in. And I assume there's shared audience.)

Q: Resistance movement in a world controlled by extensive use of nanobots

White_RavenLet's assume that we live in a world similar to ours, but with bio and nanotechnology that is 25 years (give or take a few) ahead of what we have today. Few years ago scientists in most advanced country created a programmable nanobots. They were able to withhold this information from public for a...

@Liath I decided to propose it, if it doesn't take off, it doesn't take off, taht's what the process is for, right?
Nov 18, 2014 15:43
(and write a few hundred pages, but that shouldn't be too hard)
Nov 18, 2014 15:43
Its liking the hundred pages and getting others to like them that is the really tricky bit
Nov 18, 2014 15:32
so maybe I should just get it out there
Nov 18, 2014 15:25
Thats why the titles change :p
Nov 18, 2014 11:01
ghandi ftw :)
Nov 18, 2014 11:01
@Liath She's an android whose clone has travelled back from the dystopian future to our present-day, where she uses the Power Of Music to change history so her future never happens, while the original version of her remains in the future as the leader of the resistance.
Nov 18, 2014 11:01

Q: What have we built?

LiathAs a community we've helped each other construct worlds, build ideas and solve difficult problems. It's time for a little self promotion to show off what our community has achieved. What have you created?

Nov 5, 2014 13:12
Now thinking of it backwards. How much percentage of a land is controlled by one empire? And how do you know? :)
