`Nancy jumped when she heard a key in the door. She scrambled to cover everything up and ended up tying the comforter like a giant hobo bandana.

“Hey,” Bill said as he pulled his key out of the lock.

She came out of the bedroom wringing her hands and trying to hide her guilt. “Bill! Hey! Um . . .”

“I forgot my wallet. Tried to buy a whole bunch of donuts and coffee at Max’s.” He grinned sheepishly.`

sites.google.com/site/paulclaytonplace/a-story-exercise I did not really finish and was not certain where it was going (and it fits the topic poorly and is extremely short).

The fear of the crowd has beset me
But still I will speak if they let me
So critique my rhyme
For just one more time
Before all my fears come to get me.

I liked to play concertinas
And drink some cold oranginas
But not anymore
As I told you before
I'm still just thinking of penis.

The eight most-terrifying words a writer will ever hear: "Can you write a short bio about yourself?"

“It’s time,” an urgent voice whispered. The ladiesmaid put together a small bag of her things and threw it towards Marianne. Marianne looked once more at the fireplace by her bed, grabbed her petticoat, and started towards the door. Thus began Marianne’s journey into the night.
“God with you, m’lady,” she heard as she slipped in to the stairway.

He stands in the dining room, lit faintly by the glow of streetlights through the windows and, more immediately, by the dying flames of the Chanukah menorah. Last night, so eight candles -- plus the helper candle, the one that does all the work so the others can stand tall and pretty and proud.

The menorah is one of many craft projects that the kids brought home from school, wood and glue and paint full of more love than skill, but he wouldn't trade it for the fanciest wares in the window of Goldberg's, a shop he's never ventured into. He thinks back to when he brought such projects home

Here is mine:

She looked at the candle's flame. It flickered in the silence of the night. Flickered like the last leaf on a tree in Autumn. Flickered like Hope. She was sitting in a small room, the walls closing in on her. "How much longer?" she wondered. It was the last candle left with her. She had thought about it but had decided that it was time. Since the time she was a little girl, she had always been afraid of the dark. Her thoughts rolled back to a few days before when she had awoken to the sound of strange men in her room. She had tried to scream but they were quick to silence her

Thread about time and writing I don't have any pretensions that this is gospel truth but here are a few things I thought are worth keeping in mind especially if you're struggling with limited time (h/t primary caretakers of small children)

Zadie Smith, with one of the truest sentences ever written: "It's an unfortunate thing, but it turns out that the perfect state of mind to edit your own novel is two years after it is published, ten minutes before you go onstage at a literary festival."

The pot been steaming hot this morning. I'd special-ordered the beans and made the pot this morning, and had been looking forward to that first cup. As it brewed, the smell captivated me, like coffee from home. Before I escaped.

When the email came in, I thought it would take me just a few minutes to reply to it. But I ended up checking this and verifying that, and a few minutes stretched into an hour, and soon it was time for lunch and I was still researching background for the spreadsheet meant to accompany the presentation I was putting in the email reply. Ah, the glorious life of a tel

Shout-out to the typos that make it through three rounds of content edits, copyedits, and two rounds of proofreading. I am inspired by your dedication and tenacity.

We'll follow beloved characters through the lousiest and laziest worldbuilding and plots, but the greatest worldbuilding and plotting falls flat if we don't care for the people we're reading about.

Fun fact: Raymond Chandler was 51 when he broke out with The Big Sleep. Before the depression he was an oil company exec. I know it can seem like every writer is like 28, but they aren’t, and it’s not too late for you.
