Alexei Argunov, a history teacher, has been fined 30 thousand rubles for leaving a "like" under a social network post against the Special Operation. This is the first case in Russia in which a person has been fined not for a post or a repost, but for a "like". Alexei's salary as a teacher is 17 thousand rubles per month.

To avoid long discussions of the current Ukrainian conflict in question/answer comments, I've created this chat room for any interested users.

Wikipedia now has the article: 2023 Ukrainian counteroffensive

I'm making the question feeds into ticker feeds, I think they're pushing conversation off the screen too much as-is.

> The war crime of unlawful deportation of population and that of unlawful transfer of population from occupied areas of Ukraine to the Russian Federation, in prejudice of Ukrainian children.

a little strange the name of the channel, like the conflict would be an internal affair "Ukrainian"

Guardian does an amazing reporting; they do a live blog as well as "at a glance" of each day along with other reports.

Olga Kolpakova is a writer from Yekaterinburg who wrote a children's book about WWII. This book is now being withdrawn from libraries, because of the critical description of Joseph Stalin, whose regime is compared to Hitler's regime.

@Allure It's not the same. When you say peace, one would associate that with an end to the conflict, for example through a peace treaty. What you're actually describing is an armistice, which is different. As that Wikipedia page for armistice states:

what do we (where we is anyone) know about the actual operational status of Russia's nuclear forces? Why I am asking this is that the last time Russia, the US and China detonated nuclear warheads at full yield was in the late 90's. The US has been performing subcritical tests since, but the only article I can find talking about Russia was that they planned on resuming/starting subcritical tests in the early 00's, but nothing that they actually started testing.

I did not expect to see Boris Johnson in Ukraine.

@CDJB Ah yes. I don't really see that happening for now though. Even donating advanced weapons like fighter jets won't be as simple. You'd still have to train the Ukrainians how to use them. I just don't see us having many options for further pressure. Like with the oil / gas sanctions, Bill Maher had a great bit about those resources being fungible. Basically, we can annoy them a little bit, but in the end they'll just sell to China and we'll buy from other countries.

@JJJ I presumed he was talking about the missile strikes the US carried out on Shayrat Air Base in 2017 after chemical weapons were used in Khan Shaykun, and those that the US, the UK & France carried out in 2018 after the attack in Douma, as the question was asked in terms of whether the use of chemical weapons would mean NATO forces engaging in Ukraine.

Q: What is the meaning of the Z and V symbols being sported by the Russians in the current Russo-Ukrainian conflict?

ksinkarThere are these two symbols (Z & V) which are considered as Russian prowar symbols which are appearing on Russian Army vehicles and being worn by Russians supporting the war. There is some speculation that they could mean Zapad and Vostok. Does it have anything to do with the Zapad 2017 War Game?...

@MartinSleziak I was listening to James Heappey (British Armed Forces Minister) on the radio this morning and he was pressed on whether the use of chemical weapons would mean NATO involvement... he was very careful to not give a definite answer but I believe his words were something like "Russia will be aware of previous responses by the international community when non-conventional weapons have been introduced in a conflict"

@NikeDattani no - we are preemptively protecting all questions related to the conflict at the moment, see this meta post: What measures are taken to protect the site from propaganda posts during the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine?

Seems like the news recently has been focusing more on talks and sanctions than actual fighting, so either the fighting's dying down or everyone's just used to it
