Sindaria, you're up.
Cat
Cat
Is dropping to the ground free?
(in a controlled fashion)
I think it would be interesting if you failed.
Cat
Cat
hahahha
I gotta agree.
Sindaria almost slips and falls, then drops to the ground anyway to make it look deliberate?
Cat
Cat
Jun 3, 2013 13:43
Fair enough. Sin attempts to quickly get into a creeping position to approach the cliff face.
Don't forget that you have two stunt slots open.
Cat
Cat
So do I roll, or just choose the more interesting narrative?
Hmmm.
You should roll... but I'm going to compel Plaything of Shadows to make you use your shadowjumping stunt in front of Stellata.
I think it's a compel if you just fall
or that
that's hilarious
Cat
Cat
Sorry, what does that mean?
I still roll?
4d6
Jun 3, 2013 13:45
If you do, I'll give you an FP. If you don't want to, you have to pay me an FP to avoid it.
No, you have the stunt: Because I am a shadowdancer, once per game session I can be exactly where I'm needed (a place I can see when I use this stunt) at exactly the right time.
Cat
Cat
If I roll (as I did)?
you don't need to roll
It's an automatic success kind of thing.
I'm offering you a Fate point to do this in front of Stellata, because that will seriously complicate the rest of the scene.
but you do use up your stunt for the session
and expose your identity to Stellata
Jun 3, 2013 13:46
Oh wow.
but you get tasty FP
Cat
Cat
OK, I will be a plaything of shadows - and use my stunt, I guess.
If you don't want to do it, you need to give me a Fate point to "buy out" of the complication.
yeah
What happens?
Jun 3, 2013 13:47
@Cat Do you want me to narrate it, or would you like to?
Cat
Cat
You can narrate it. I see it as rather random and beyond her control
(I currently have mental images of Nightcrawler)
(bamf)
lol
I actually,... thought more like they were creeping up to her, grabing her, and spitting her out somewhere
Sindaria moves toward the cave entrance, hoping to slide unnoticed down the cliff... but the dim light of the cave swallows her up and spits her out at the foot of the cliff, coming to her feet in the shadow of a big grey rock.
I just added a Fate point to Sindaria's total.
Cat
Cat
great :)
And my stunt is used?
Jun 3, 2013 13:50
(So far as I can tell, compels grant FP immediately, while invokes wait until the end of the scene.)
Yes.
Cat
Cat
Super :P
@JonathanHobbs Yeah, sure.
man that is creepy
Does Sindaria have anything non-mechanical to say or do as she finds herself in the clearing with a plant lady, a wizard, and a wet hobo?
Cat
Cat
Jun 3, 2013 13:51
Sin gasps.
Kirby fell from that side. Stellata is currently facing it. She sees... what? Someone thrown out of blackness in front of a rock?
Cat
Cat
Does she see all of those things from behind the rock?
@JonathanHobbs I'm thinking a forced acrobat-roll.
@Cat Yeah, you're spat out into the clearing.
well
Cat
Cat
OK
Jun 3, 2013 13:52
Stellata isn't looking that way, but I assume the shadows spit sin out in front of her
Sort of a somersault out of the shadow onto the moss.
Stellata is still Completely In the Moment. She'll notice.
that's what I am saying
Stellata, your turn.
not seeing the top doesn't exclude noticing the bottom
I... wow. I have not yet even worked out how Stellata would react to seeing this.
Jun 3, 2013 13:53
Think fast!
(Fate is also about dumping your characters into situations very quickly.)
fastfastfastfastfast
Cat
Cat
Can I invoke "But I'm just a poor innocent looking girl" aspect?c ;)
Cat
Cat
(holding daggers, lol)
If there's something to invoke it on.
Cat
Cat
Jun 3, 2013 13:54
(I was jk)
An old man is yelling at someone. Old men are wizards. Old men are also old men. There's a man climbing out of the water who obviously doesn't need her attention and wasn't doing a very good job of being dangerous. Stellata doesn't care about any of this: a woman just jumped out of shadows. She needs to be over there, right now.
What are her options?
I think she needs to jump over the pool (if possible) or move through it as quickly as possible.
That'd be an overcome, most likely.
She's going to try to leap the pool.
You're trying to move through one zone to another one. The base difficulty is 1 for each zone after the first, but the pool is a pool, so let's make it worth an extra 1.
Forceful leap:
Jun 3, 2013 13:57
So, difficulty of 2.
+1. I... don't know if I can tag anything to do with that.
You can succeed at serious cost.
For example, I'll let you succeed if you take 1 stress for every point you needed but didn't get.
She uses her last tag of Completely in the Moment to time her jump just right, and land just right. She's going to land... mostly well.
So, +3 vs +2.
(unless y'all think I should save that tag)
Jun 3, 2013 13:59
Okay, but I'm going to tag Startled. +3 vs +4.
It's hard to react to the sudden new threat when you're still figuring out the last two.
Alright. If she succeeds at serious cost, that's a mild consequence right?
It's negotiable.
Examples include "suffering harm" and "losing something vital."
I suggest taking the stress hit
She lands badly and takes a stress hit?
mild consequence is worth 2 stress
you would take one
Jun 3, 2013 14:02
Or lands beautifully but it takes effort she might need later.
mild consequence is kinda a heavy cost
Stellata's no longer startled, but she's not as in the zone as she was a moment ago. She's focused, and lands?
(Stress isn't damage, it's narrative oomph to avoid damage: the main character running through the haze of bullets and not getting hit is losing stress; when she gets hit by the last bullet at the end, that's a consequence.)
and, yeah, takes effort she may need later.
Okay, sounds good.
Increment your tag appropriately, and is there anything she's like to say/do nonmechanically?
Jun 3, 2013 14:05
She looks at Sindaria and shouts "Havada!"
Her voice bears urgency and alarm but I don't think it bears malice.
does that mean "I want to be your friend, you are so cool" ?
it totally means that, in every language
Cat
Cat
:P
durr
whose turn is it now?
Jun 3, 2013 14:07
Henry calls to Sindaria, "Yer style needs work, but 'twas good thinkin'! Now 'member, the wizard's weakness is 'is staff!"
Cat
Cat
groan
He's Cleverly creating advantage by making sure Sin knows to Go For the Staff.
4d6
Cat
Cat
Not that I don't appreciate the advice, but I've got a giant charging tree woman in front of me?
Jun 3, 2013 14:08
(his staff, on which his self-esteem as a wizard is entirely dependent. the boy from the cottage with his thick books is, thankfully, completely unaware of all of this.)
Cat
Cat
So I roll to resist?
If you want to.
Cat
Cat
OK, rolling to be more careful...4d6
Huh?
4d6
You have to say it on its own
Jun 3, 2013 14:10
That's.... +3 vs his +6.
Cat
Cat
I am pwned.
(does Henry have a sheet?)
Not at the moment. Brian didn't have one for me.
Cat
Cat
OK, do I have any action left?
Or was my resist my action?
Jun 3, 2013 14:11
@Cat it's not your turn yet. Your turn was shadowjumping.
this man is superbly clever
Cat
Cat
Oh, ok
This is Henry's turn, and you tried to resist his advice.
Cat
Cat
sorry, lol
@JonathanHobbs Casting stat...
Mentors gotta have 'em.
Jun 3, 2013 14:11
@BESW minmaxer!
Not that anyone's paying any attention at all, but Trouble books it out the cave and into the forest, heading downstream at a good clip. Conceding wuss-puss.
@BESW I demand he concedes all his shillings and leaves them behind
Cat
Cat
lol
lol
fraid he's a cat
and a fraidy cat at that
The wizard cackles theatrically and points his staff at Sindaria, sparks of power gathering around its tip.
Jun 3, 2013 14:14
shouldn't be hard for him then, but if he is a cat who owns shillings, old men in caves need those shillings more than him. what's he even doing with them?
my point is that he likely doesn't even have any to give up
Brute-force magic +2, attacking Sindaria.
then it shouldn't be hard for him to leave them behind c(:
4d6
Jun 3, 2013 14:14
oh wow.
Cat
Cat
Sin tries to quickly evade
4d6
...+1. Uses both his Menacing tags for a total of +5.
Cat
Cat
Ouch!
Sindaria's got... +2? vs his +5.
Jun 3, 2013 14:16
I... could declare a natural aspect to help protect her.
Cat
Cat
I can invoke "you win the fights you avoid" for +2, I think?
Henry calls out "Use th' shaders to 'sorb 'is pow'r!", giving you both his I Have Good Advice tags.
If you want them.
Cat
Cat
Sure, I can try that
Cat
Cat
What does that put me at?
Jun 3, 2013 14:17
Puts you at +6 vs the wizard's +5.
Cat
Cat
So I can do so ...
The wizard's spell lashes out like a whip of sparkling lightning toward Sindaria...
Cat
Cat
Under the threat of imminent magical attack, Sin's strong survival instincts call her shadow powers to action ...
[Don't forget to narrate the Good Advice into it]
Cat
Cat
She hears Henry's advice just in time and the ground beneath her feet begins to smoke as if she were a witch tied to a pyre. The smoke wafts up in a protective coccoon around her as she shields her face with her arms.
The sparks of magic are carried up like sparks from a flaming bonfire, harmlessly into the air.
Jun 3, 2013 14:21
lovely.
Cat
Cat
lol
we'll see about that. NEXT!
Kirby!
lol
good lord
what do I do now
You could try to remove one of your negative aspects.
Jun 3, 2013 14:23
They're both at +0 and have no reason to be actively defended.
there's a wizard whose voice you might recognise yelling and casting spells nearby
I guess Kirby will attempt to shake the water out of his ears
(I'm guessing it's him at least)
carefully
4d6
Jun 3, 2013 14:23
yeah pretty sure that's gone
Yup!
does that mean he gets a boost?
Let's see, that's a +4?
yeah
I invoke the waterlogged tag to bring it to 4 vs 2.
So it's not succeeding with style.
You just lose the aspect, that's all.
Jun 3, 2013 14:25
lol
wasn't going for anything else
(You can invoke the aspect he's trying to overcome?)
Kirby slowly starts to get the water out of his ears, trying desperately to ignore the fact that it is the 3rd or 4th time people loudly started fighting where he has ended up
@JonathanHobbs It's still there until the roll resolves.
Kirby shook the water from his ears in time to hear a great thunder CRASHCRASHCRASHCRASH from the top of the cliff, and a roar like a thousand pots and pans being thrown into a furnace.
"NOOOOOO!"
"THE SCONES WERE BURNT!" the dragon screams hungrily.
Cat
Cat
Jun 3, 2013 14:27
hahahahahaha
lol
wildly appropriate
Cat
Cat
I obviously need to have been there...but lol nonetheless
oh my god xD
dragon time
this is very bad
It sneezes, incinerating the saplings along the top of the cliff, and glances about suspiciously. "A WIZARD?!"
The wizard nearly drops his staff in fear, but clings to it as the dragon's head shoots forward to direct a gout of flashy flame at the green-robed man.
4d6
Jun 3, 2013 14:29
That's +7.
vs...
4d6
+2, +4 if I'm feeling generous and let him use Brute-force Magic to defend. Anyone have an opinion on that?
we will miss you brave mook
Cat
Cat
hahaha
It is his life at stake
Jun 3, 2013 14:31
Mooks, by definition, don't get consequences.
Cat
Cat
oh
If he takes more than 1 stress, he's Taken Out.
That was a mook!? O:
I think he is done either way here
yeah
Cat
Cat
Agreed
Jun 3, 2013 14:32
his name is wizard lackey
he is a mook
The wizard ignites instantly, his staff blazing like a firework. He screams and plunges into the pool.
a nameless, and soon to be crispy and faceless, mook
Someone might want to check on him after the DRAGON is dealt with.
Cat
Cat
crispy? nice descriptor
Jun 3, 2013 14:33
...If anyone's still around to do so.
lol
I have killed us all
depends. there is a DRAGON here.
Sindaria, you're up.
please line up to thank me
Cat
Cat
Is Sin surrounded in smoke/shadow as an aspect right now?
Or is that a temporary thing?
Jun 3, 2013 14:34
Did you get 3 or more than you needed on the defense roll?
Cat
Cat
I don't think so ...
(I think you only got 1 shift.)
Then no, the shadows only lasted for that action.
yeah
one shift
Cat
Cat
OK. Sin is going to try to run!
went back and checked
Cat
Cat
Jun 3, 2013 14:35
(quickly!)
Is she booking it from the conflict entirely?
Cat
Cat
(thanks @trogdor)
Cat
Cat
After she saw what happened to the wizard, yes!
(You remove yourself from the conflict mechanically, and get 1 FP for doing so, but you have to concede something important.)
Cat
Cat
Jun 3, 2013 14:36
? Like what?
an item, maybe taking a consequence
Cat
Cat
(sorry, I didn't realize)
That's negotiable. Usually your enemy in the conflict gets what they wanted out of the conflict, but you get to narrate it.
Cat
Cat
Can she attempt to dive into the pool to hide then?
A brutal example is that if someone wants to kill you, you narrate getting pushed off a cliff.... into a river far below. It hurts, you lost what you wanted to accomplish, but you're alive.
If you want to stay in the scene, yeah, that's a good action.
That'd be a Create Advantage action.
Cat
Cat
Jun 3, 2013 14:38
OK, that's what I'll try.
Quickly!
4d6
Looks like +4?
Cat
Cat
So that's +3 I think?
Oh, right.
Narrate the action, with the aspect you want to have.
Cat
Cat
Do I invoke extra aspects as well, or wait for the dragon's role?
Jun 3, 2013 14:40
Depends. Are you trying to make him not know where you are, or get to a safer position?
Cat
Cat
Trying to avoid detection, yeah.
The latter is just placing an aspect on yourself, and the dragon isn't in a position to try stopping you.
The former is vs his perception of you.
Cat
Cat
Hmm...maybe I reconsider for the char. SHe's just trying to get to safety. PRobably terrified right now.
Safely Underwater?
Cat
Cat
I'll say that she's not clever enough to attempt to be stealthy right n ow
Let's hope so!!!
Jun 3, 2013 14:41
Okay, so that's just vs +0, so you have +3.... for a second tag!
> Safely Underwater (+3, Sin, tag x2)
Cat
Cat
Yay Sin!
Narrate it, and then it's Stellata's turn.
Cat
Cat
Sin is visibly trembling despite the success of her shadow defense when the dragon's voice booms through the air. She watches the wizard incinerate before her and screams before fleeing to the safety of the water.
Stellata?
Stellata thinks the water is a very good place to be right now. Sindaria's in there too. Uh...
Jun 3, 2013 14:45
So's the wizard!
and, thinking out loud, Sindaria's flipping the heck out.
And... Stellata is going to flip her the heck out more by going right after her.
adfasdf
Cat
Cat
Is this pool big enough for the lot of us?
Sure.
Cat
Cat
phew
Jun 3, 2013 14:47
So, free action to move into the pool, and action....?
it isn't big enough for Kirby's guilt
(By the way, Kirby, I gave you a tag on the dragon's Insulted aspect.)
lol
I think I know how to use it
Stellata leaps in beside her and... I don't know and my brain is whirring in circles.
[cackles]
Jun 3, 2013 14:48
I give it odds of 50 50 he gets killed trying to fix things
Stellata ducks underwater - right underwater - and tries to gesture flashily to Sindaria to calm the heck down. Can I compel her?
Cat
Cat
(just fyi, I need to go in 10 mins)
@JonathanHobbs Aspect: You Win the Fights You Avoid
And Aspect: Refuge in the green
You certainly count as the latter.
Cat
Cat
:)
In fact, that's actually a great way for both of you to duck out of the scene, since Cat has to go.
Jun 3, 2013 14:50
I hope I don't need to invoke too much aaaa
4d
I can either invoke both those tags or compel her.
I don't know if I actually can compel her so I'm rolling to speed this up if I can't
at present that's a -1
and I will invoke the heck out of things to make that a +3 or a +5
but I don't know if I should just be compelling her. Advise me?
I would suggest a compel
Hmmm. Offer her a Fate point to complicate her life by taking refuge in the Green instead of staying with the mentor who can teach her to be a shadowdancer?
Cat
Cat
What's a compel from a PC?
You give an FP?
Jun 3, 2013 14:52
the PC gives up a FP
Cat
Cat
got it
and you get it
at the same time you normally would
Does that compel seem reasonable to you, Cat?
I compel Sindaria, then, to follow Stellata downstream?
after Stellata gestures wildly with a lot of phosphoresce and glowing arms and eyes and stuff.
Cat
Cat
Sorry, does that add an overpowering aspect?
Jun 3, 2013 14:53
@Cat No, it's a behavioral thing.
@JonathanHobbs Aye. And might as well show off: use One With the Forest to cover your retreat?
Cat
Cat
OK, Sin will go along with it since she just wants out right now.
@Cat Sin, admirer of nature, just had a beautiful plant lady pull a "Come with me if you want to live" vs dragon.
Cat
Cat
Exactly.
Easy choice in the moment
One with the Forest: thick reeds and grass spring up either side of the pool to grant cover. Or a ton of lilypads.
I think lilypads.
But it leaves Henry in danger: the only person she's ever met who's nice and might be able to help with her powers.
Cat
Cat
Jun 3, 2013 14:55
I like the lilypads
I don't think she's that worried about Henry just yet.
She's a survivalist.
Lilypads spring up from the beds around them to grant Surface full o' lilypads.
Cat
Cat
He doesn't seem like he can offer much protection
Powers are no good if she's dead
What can I do to make the wizard come with us?
@Cat He did keep her from taking 5 shifts of lightning to the face.
(Sorry Kirby. You're on your own)
Jun 3, 2013 14:56
(it is ok)
Cat
Cat
I don't know if Sin understands that completely.
(I'm sure we'll meet again someday ;_; one day)
(was actually thinking of attempting to fix it so that no one died or only I did)
Cat
Cat
(not to insult you)
Let's see. Henry's in the cave still. You guys are underwater and shooting away. Kirby's the dragon's primary target anyway.
....Invite Henry to come with.
Cat
Cat
Jun 3, 2013 14:57
Me?
Either you or Stellata.
but how does that complicate for her?
@trogdor [tents fingers] Brian knows.
Cat
Cat
lol
lol
works for me
Cat
Cat
Jun 3, 2013 14:59
Well, Sin's underwater at the moment.
Henry cries out, quaveringly, "Ye wouln't leave little old 'enry 'ere wit a dragon, would ye'?"
Cat
Cat
She needs to takea breath, and as she does, she screams out his name "Henry!"
(I just transferred 1 FP from Stellata to Sindaria. Is that right?)
Yup!
Homing in on her voice, Henry steps through the dappled shadows at the bottom of the stream and grabs her hand, pulled along as they float downstream with the nice plant lady.
Cat
Cat
Can she forcefully pull him in?
OK. Good. Gotta go!
Jun 3, 2013 15:01
Oooh.
Guys is the code review website the right place to submit code that does not fully work and ask people to help you out with figuring out what is the problem?
@Jonatha ok
@Cat Sindaria reaches out through the darkness and pulls Henry through the dappled shadows at the bottom of the stream, grabbing his hand as they are float downstream with the nice plant lady.
