Regarding off-topic Science Fiction and Fantasy anime questions
We have two options
Either gather 5 3K users
Or flag questions which are really off-topic
Well, first of all, is Anime even on their migrate list?
Probably not.
Who decides the sites on the migrate list?
And I'd imagine it won't happen either
If it's SE, then we can push for that.
If it's the mods, that won't happen.
Feb 9, 2013 19:46
I don't think they are going to like it if we deliberately try to steal questions other than ones that they don't want.
They don't nearly have enough off-topic questions that should be migrated to us for it to justify being on their list
@LoganM That's true, but when you're managing something big, it's hard to please everyone.
We could push for it by asking a lot of borderline OT anime questions over there until they get sick of them.
probably not allowed, but it might work
I don't like gaming the system like that.
We should work with them, not against them.
@MadaraUchiha How about every time they get an Anime question, we ask them if we can take it?
Feb 9, 2013 19:48
@Mysticial Ask them how?
Comments? Meta?
@MadaraUchiha I dunno, bug them in chat? I dunno what the process is for mods.
If the question is on-topic on their site, they won't migrate it to us.
And it also makes sense
I think the current arrangement is fine. A few people ask over there, and if they don't get a good answer someone refers them here.
We just want to make sure their users know that we exist, and are probably a better resource for anime than they are.
Now that there's a Magento site, does that mean that it's now offtopic on Stack Overflow? No, it does not.
@Mysticial Also, I don't think it's appropriate to bug their mods in chat every time a new question is asked on their site
@MadaraUchiha No, but you can certainly try to take them... For example, casperOne has been migrating everything that's on-topic to CodeReview even if it's on-topic for SO.
Feb 9, 2013 19:51
@Mysticial It's a slightly different case.
@MadaraUchiha True. But like I said, I don't know the process. So I'm just throwing about (potentially bad) suggestions.
@Mysticial That seems like abusing the system. Though if there was a migration path and we had enough 3k users they couldn't really stop us except by reporting it to SE.
Only Science Fiction and Fantasy Meta is on their migration list.
Judging by the fact that JNat's answer at meta.scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/2621/… is +5, it seems like their users don't really have a problem with us and to some degree agree that we are probably better for anime questions.
@LoganM There are no downvotes either. So no opposition.
Feb 9, 2013 19:57
So we may not even need to do anything. If their users direct people here as a better place for anime, that would be the best solution and would avoid any conflict.
They only have 40 some questions on Anime.
@Mysticial How can you see up/down votes on Scifi? You don't even have an account there according to your profile
If we just leave a kind comment on every user's first Anime question. It's probably good enough.
@LoganM Because I'm awesome. :)
@Mysticial Somehow I thought those pages required like 1.5k rep to view.
@LoganM nope... :)
It's a great page to see when something goes viral.
Feb 9, 2013 20:02
Let's get back on topic
@Mysticial Back on topic, A better way to do it would be to answer and then note in the answer that this site exists. An even better way (which will not usually be possible) is to point to a related question on this site in your answer.
@LoganM Pointing to a related question is the way
No doubt.
On graduate sites, migration paths are based on the migration stats for that site
I like that idea.
I did something like that here:
@MadaraUchiha Which of course can be heavily influenced by the mods since only they can migrate.

Q: No-Face's ability

WatchKaonashi (No-Face) "No-Face is a lonely being who seems to sustain itself on the emotions of those he encounters, particularly their emotional reception to his gifts." In the film, the gold produced by No-face is seen to turn into dirt as Yubaba realises her baby is gone. In this sense does it ...

@Mysticial Yes
ok,I just realised a few days ago that there was a spirited away tag so yeah — Watch Jan 28 at 1:40
^^ That comment is very telling.
He didn't ask it on Anime because he didn't know it existed.
It's because that tag didn't exist.
We should set a new (and very in-your-face) big policy that if you don't have the rep to make a tag, put in a (to-be-made) temporary tag and let a high-rep user add the tag manually.
@Mysticial That's why we need to get excuses to post our links all over the place. And on-topic scifi questions about anime are great excuses.
@Mysticial I don't like that idea, but we may have no choice.
@LoganM nonono, because he didn't know the tag existed.
@MadaraUchiha Neither do I. Right now, if you're a new user and you can't make a tag for your question, you probably just gonna leave. Or try something generic like
Feb 9, 2013 20:08
@Mysticial has been on this site since private beta. I asked a question about it on the second or third day.
@LoganM Oh ok, so that's not the problem in this particular case. But in general, the tag creating thing is going to be a problem until we reach critical mass.
I'll try to talk to Arqade and Science Fiction and Fantasy mods
By critical mass, I mean like 90% tag coverage for all shows that are at least somewhat popular.
See how they deal with that problem
@MadaraUchiha Good idea.
Feb 9, 2013 20:10
@MadaraUchiha I don't think gaming would have this issue
@Mysticial A few new users have asked questions where they asked someone to make a tag for them and tagged the question with random other stuff. I've fulfilled 3 or 4 such requests, and I imagine the other people with retag privileges have as well.
@Krazer Gaming would definitely have this issue, since by definition not all games are tagged there.
So yeah, that's a problem...
@MadaraUchiha ah I thought you meant something else
in Teachers' Lounge, 38 secs ago, by Ben Brocka
on Gaming they'll often tag a q with the console instead and request a tag, then someone adds it
Feb 9, 2013 20:11
I still don't have enough rep to enter the suggested edit queue.
@MadaraUchiha In our case, the "console" is and .
Which are both black-listed right?
If that's the case, it's gonna be a huge usability issue.
@Mysticial I'll try to see if we can get those removed
You can't create the tag for your show. So you try next. And that gets blocked...
(from the blacklist that is)
um...
For a new user who's just curious... you're just gonna leave...
That's not something we want.
If possible get those two tags unblacklisted before the reddit run tomorrow.
Feb 9, 2013 20:14
Furthermore, add to the tag wikis that these tags should only be used if you don't have the rep to create the tag for your show.
@MadaraUchiha Only community mods can change the blacklists?
Or do you just need permission?
@Mysticial Only they can change it
damn...
Point them here if needed.
This a is a significant UX barrier that will be a problem.
We could just make a or something similar for questions needing a retag. But there's still a question of visibility.
@LoganM Exactly, a new user isn't going to know that.
They're most likely going to try or first after failing to create a tag for the show.
The fact that we had a case of strongly hits that the user typed in "anime" and that popped up.
@Mysticial So make it something like . When they search for it will show up.
Feb 9, 2013 20:18
@LoganM that works too
and of course manga as well.
We'll see what @Madara hears back.
@Mysticial If we don't get an answer by tomorrow's reddit linking,
We'll reluctantly go with that, until we get a definite answer.
Worst case, we'll remove/merge the tag later
@MadaraUchiha ok
But we need to actually make the tag so we need to put it on something and remove it.
That'll keep the tag around for 7 days.
@Mysticial These aren't the worst tags in the world as long as they're being used correctly. They are actually useful to sort by and it's more intuitive for new users.
Maybe we should keep them for longer. Put them on some old closed -3 question and just let them sit there.
@LoganM You have a good point though. the "retag" makes it clear. And we can search it.
Feb 9, 2013 20:22
@LoganM No need. A tags stays for 7 days after it is removed from the last question.
If we don't get at least one new user every 7 days, we've got bigger problems.
We'll wait for a while until I get a response from the community team regarding the [anime] and [manga] tags
If you guys don't hear from me today, create those tags before the reddit post.
@MadaraUchiha Honestly I'd rather use then because it's less likely to be misused.
^^ same
So you could just withdraw that request to unblacklist.
alright
and , any objections?
@MadaraUchiha nope
I'm for it.
Feb 9, 2013 20:26
I'd say just make one with synonyms and (and maybe some others if you want). That way we can see all the questions needing retagging at the same time.
@Deidara-senpai @Krazer we aren't hearing from you guys
Make the tag wiki clear.
@LoganM You can only synonymize with one.
Sorry I'm getting my reddit account ready for tomorrow
@Mysticial Really? Okay then just make both of them.
I'd say we blacklist . If anyone types in "retag", and will both popup. Which is exactly what is best.
Feb 9, 2013 20:28
I think that would work
could still be useful for if there are cases where it's neither anime nor manga. But anyway, there's no need to blacklist. The only people using these tags will be people who can't create tags on their own.
No need to blacklist retag in my eyes
and will capture not only those who type in "anime" and "manga", but will capture the more "familiar" users who will try "retag"
Remember that new users won't be able to use it anyway unless it's created by a higher reputation user.
hmm
Lets roll with that for now then. If a change is warranted we can discuss it when it comes up.
Feb 9, 2013 20:32
Alright then, let's wrap it up.
So we all agree and we're basically done for now.
To the subject of getting questions from Science Fiction and Fantasy,
Answer/comment their relevant questions and link to similar questions on our site.
There will be a and for new users to use.
That's about it on this subject
