Let's start with meta tags.
I have one thing I want to bring up.
Fairly important.
@Mysticial speak up
SE automatically appends tags to the title.
If anybody hasn't noticed yet.
If none of the tags are already in the title, it will take the most popular tag and add it to the title.
However...
This is great if there's only one tag. (the name of the show/series)
Like "android - Broadcastreciver triggered at Start - Stack Overflow", you mean?
@Eric yeah
But if we add an additional tag such as
It will append that to the title instead of the name of the show.
That is going to severely hurt SEO.
Search Engine Optimization
If you're gonna ask about X character, in Y show. You want both to be in the title.
You don't want the title to be like "Character Abilities - How can X destroy blah blah in 10 seconds."
Yeah, good point. "characters - Who was Archer? - Anime and Manga Beta - Stack Exchange" is not great.

exactly
I've been careful with tags for this reason. But I think now's a good opportunity to bring it up.
so there has to be some meta post about tagging
I haven´t seen any tag get appended to a title before hmm
It's only in the title of the page.
(Which appears on search engines, of course.)
Right now, I only add meta tags if the name of the show is already in the title.

@Dimitrimx Some examples if you're interested.
For example, here's a question that is not good for SEO:
2
Q: Why isn't Gildarts one of the Ten Wizard Saints?

BlueHe clearly is powerful. Makarov even said that Juro's (One of the 10 Wizard Saints) power was close to Gildarts, which means that Gildarts is more powerful than Juro. So why isn't he a wizard saint? Does he have to do something magnificent? Or is he just not popular enough?

Since the name can't easily be added to the title. I'd say get rid of the tag.
Which of course we lead to inconsistent use of these meta tags.
It would be nice if moderators or the posters could pick the "main" tag.
@Mysticial so firstly we should debate about whether or not to keep meta tags
@Eric I've wanted such a feature for a while. My top answer on SO would benefit a lot from it actually. Since the key word is in a minor tag and is not in the title.
@JNat First, where do we draw the line between meta tags. Is a meta tag?
madara has brought up the issue of meta tags here
Feb 16, 2013 18:14
I'd say we do away with .
I think we should also discuss how we use new and current mata tags, esp for new users
I agree on that
Alright, I'm here
Me, too.
Feb 16, 2013 18:14
What have we begun on?
@Mysticial and
@MadaraUchiha meta tags
As it is right now, meta tags are hurting our search engine visibility.
I dunno about character abilities
Since almost nobody is aware of the issue I brought up here.
@Mysticial Even more so, the twitter tweets (which also depend on the most popular tag)
Feb 16, 2013 18:16
I'm tempted to vote in favor or ridding of all meta tags for the sole reason of SEO.
then shouldnt the focus be more on easy to recognize tag´s ?
Alright then, since we agree that meta tags are harmful, which do we kill?
Feb 16, 2013 18:18
I'm a little unsure of though.
how do i post nice buttons like you do ;o
No
@Dimitrimx [tag:tag-name]
thanks
I believe is a decent tag
is a hard one. It's definitely a directly applicable category, but it is somewhat meta.
Feb 16, 2013 18:19
The only way I'd want to allow meta tags is if we make it clear that the name of the show needs to be in the title. (or we aggressively edit them in when appropriate)
Yet how often would be used. I dont think allot of questions will surround it
In some cases, it's obvious enough since "Misaka" is so well recognized. (possibility more so than the name of the shows themselves)
I think we should hold off on killing all meta tags, some should be gone but we can try to leave others for now if we mention the title rules
Actually, Dimitri is right. Probably all posts relating to anime physics will have that in either the question or answer.
There's only two posts there now...
@Krazer I think that is a better approach too
Feb 16, 2013 18:21
I agree.
The most obvious ones should die
The rest should remain under watch to see if they spread too much
@MadaraUchiha those are which exactly?
@MadaraUchiha , , ...?
@MadaraUchiha ok
Feb 16, 2013 18:22
Those three go first
In in favor of getting rid of those.
What about ?
@Eric that too
i say remove .
Probably too
Feb 16, 2013 18:22
Yup. I'm in favor, then, all those 4.
Same
I'll take care of these, if we are in agreement.
While I think they are useful, they're too inconsistently used and it hurts SEO too much.
Alright then
Feb 16, 2013 18:23
As for the rest, there should be some guidelines for tagging, and we keep a watchful eye for those that hurt the search engine visibility
Final call, any objections?
We have an agreement then, we will burn , , and
4
Burn away.
burn it
I shall burnicate them now.
Feb 16, 2013 18:25
@Krazer IIRC you need to speak with the community team to do it properly, see if there's any of them on TL
mods can't burn tags?
I thought they only can't blacklist.
@Mysticial No, sadly.
A note, don't forget to star helpful messages
2
@MadaraUchiha I'll get on that.
Interesting though. The SO mods seem to be able to eliminate tags just like that.
They are kept in the bookmark, and display a helpful summery of the conversation
Feb 16, 2013 18:27
And in the meantime, now that we all know the tag appending works with SEO, we should just manually fix anything that needs to be fixed.
Our traffic is small enough for this to be manageable.
@Mysticial Hmmm, you mean manually adding tags to the title?
"naruto - Question here?"
@MadaraUchiha Not to every one. By evaluate on a case-by-case basis.
I think he means more like "What is ______ in Naruto?"
Alright then
So either remove unnecessary tags or somehow add the keywords to the title.
@Eric Yeah, pretty much.
@Eric Of course that's not necessary right now since is the biggest tag.
Feb 16, 2013 18:29
@Mysticial Indeed. Was just running with Madara's example.
Bookmark ends here. Let's move on.
