Hmm.
Avadon 2 or Desktop Dungeons? Decisions, decisions.
Should I start watching Babylon 5?
@RedRiderX No.
Don't listen to any other answer.
@Sterno Oh.
Okay. :P
@RedRiderX YES
Nov 12, 2013 01:27
What sci-fi should I watch?
Wait, wait
Do you like things that suck?
@RedRiderX BABYLON 5
If so, Babylon 5 would be okay I guess.
@Sterno ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)
@Sterno Hmm.
I watched all of the last 3 years of DW.

Babylon 5 is an amazing show. It's also loved by two mods who hang out in here...
If you ever watched Smallville and thought to yourself, "Man, I need a show of about this quality but with worse special effects and set in space", Babylon 5 is for you.
@WorldEngineer Also me.
Heroes?
Okay, so apparently at least Steam seems to have it under NDA. Sigh.
@Sterno I HATE YOU

@RedRiderX beginning heroes is good
@GnomeSlice :)
user20683
it suffers from Enterprise Syndrome pretty rapidly
If you want science fiction, watch Fringe.
@WorldEngineer ?
If you want SPAAAAACE, watch Firefly
Nov 12, 2013 01:30
@Sterno I remember hearing about that...
user20683
@RedRiderX there was a writers strike
user20683
things didn't recover
@WorldEngineer Ah okay.
user20683
so they hit bottom, clawed their way to something halfway okay and then died
user20683
just like Enterprise
user20683
Nov 12, 2013 01:30
Farscape is good
The first two seasons of Farscape are good.
user20683
Battlestar Galactica the second
Three is mediocre and four is terribad.
user20683
yeah, it also suffers from the "gets weird" problem
SG-1?
Nov 12, 2013 01:31
And the TV movie is... I don't even know what you call it that far down the scale.
Should I start with that?
I know 0 Stargate.
An awesome thing SG-1 has going for it is a shit ton of episodes
Unfortunately only about 30% are entertaining
user20683
@RedRiderX solid choice for the first chunk, gets...weird about halfway through
But between all it's incarnations it has what... like 16 seasons?
user20683
they run into the WoW problem, running out of lore enemies
user20683
Nov 12, 2013 01:32
yeah
user20683
let's see
user20683
I think SG-1 had 10 and Atlantis had 5
17 then
Plus a few movies
Old ThunderBirds stuff?
@RedRiderX Stargate is a good one to go with.
Nov 12, 2013 01:33
Like the 60's stuff.
I think we all agreed on Stargate.
user20683
@RedRiderX UFO is good from that standpoint
It's not super awesome but it's generally not offensively bad
user20683
Blake's Seven is good
@RedRiderX seasons 1-5, 7 are good
Nov 12, 2013 01:34
I like that last season or two of SG-1 when they basically act like they're on a TV show and can never die
@RedRiderX SG-1's first chronologically
first few seasons and the last episode of atlantis was good
user20683
@kalina I'll generally agree with that
@Ullallulloo I had hoped.
universe was good but cut short
Nov 12, 2013 01:35
Or else stuff would seem very strange...
Until Atlantis starts, then they run side-by-side until SG-1 ends.
"Oh, we're kidnapped again and about to be tortured to death... gee, how will we ever get out of this? fake gasp OH NO!" 8 seconds later beamed out by random aliens that show up
@RedRiderX Stargate movie -> SG1 to the end of season 7, and then watch SG1 s8-10 alongside atlantis
I watched SG-U recently and I really enjoyed it.
Shame it ended so soon...
the movie provides a lot of detail that will make season 1 of SG1 make a lot more sense
Nov 12, 2013 01:36
@RedRiderX I also recommend:
Defying Gravity is a multi-nationally produced space travel television science fiction drama series which first aired on August 2, 2009 on ABC and CTV and was canceled in the autumn (September/October) of 2009. Set in the year 2052, the series follows eight astronauts (four women and four men) from four countries on a six-year space mission through the Solar System, during which they are monitored from Earth via a real-time communication system. The series was pitched to networks as "Grey's Anatomy in space". Thirteen episodes of the series were produced before it was cancelled, only eig...
@kalina Yeah SG and BSG being just huge things to even start is one issue.
Another one that ended prematurely though...
user20683
@GnomeSlice yeah...that one still makes me angry.
It only went for like a single season.
@GnomeSlice I liked it but I wouldn't recommend a show cancelled after like 8 eps and without ever getting around to its mystery
Nov 12, 2013 01:36
@RedRiderX as long as you watch the movie first, you'll have all of the ground work to make sense of sg1
@WorldEngineer It was just starting to get interesting with the artifacts too...
user20683
it was actually good but they cancelled it before it aired...because ABC had to outdo FOX somehow
user20683
@GnomeSlice yeah, agreed. It was like the good parts of 2001 in a lot of ways.
Fun drinking game: Do a shot every time you hear someone in the Stargate movie chamber a round in their already-loaded weapon.
@kalina This is right. The movie's optional though. You'll feel a little lost at times without it, but it has different actors
user20683
Nov 12, 2013 01:37
they needed less melodrama but that aside it's good
I've never seen it though, so I'm not in a good spot to comment on it.
@Ullallulloo yeah it covers all of the basic mechanics though
@kalina Like this one?
Stargate (French: Stargate, la porte des étoiles) is a 1994 American-French science fiction film released through Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) and Carolco Pictures. Created by Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, the film is the first release in the Stargate franchise. Directed by Roland Emmerich, the film stars Kurt Russell, James Spader, Jaye Davidson, Carlos Lauchu, Djimon Hounsou, Erick Avari, Alexis Cruz, Mili Avital, John Diehl, French Stewart, and Viveca Lindfors. The plot centers around the premise of a "Stargate", an ancient ring-shaped device that creates a wormhole enabling travel to...
the switch in actors is a bit weird but it happens
@RedRiderX yes
then, once you finish watching SG1
@WorldEngineer I dunno, I thought it was presented pretty well. It was a lot more introspective than most Sci Fi
Nov 12, 2013 01:38
there are two more movies to watch
you need to watch Ark of Truth after finishing season 10 of SG1
user20683
Movie has some differences and there are some retcons like the nature of the Goa'uld but that aside it was solid.
since it finishes the story
user20683
Also James Spader and Kurt Russell are always fun to watch.
I need to watch the rest of the B5 movies
No one ever needs to watch the B5 movies
Nov 12, 2013 01:38
@WorldEngineer plus episode 200 of sg1 has callbacks to the movies with wormhole xtreme
Or that terrible ranger spin-off thing
user20683
Warehouse 13 is fun for the first few seasons
@kalina Oh my...
@RedRiderX Stargate Continuum is just fanservice really
It makes me sad that SyFy Channel doesn't have any sci-fi anymore.
Nov 12, 2013 01:39
but Ark of Truth finishes the story
@Sterno Falling Skies is back, isn't it?
Still waiting for Defiance to come back too.
@GnomeSlice TNT
@Sterno Oh...
Oh, right, Defiance.
Never watched it, looked terrible.
And Defiance was showcase...
Nov 12, 2013 01:40
But they do have it.
My bad
Was it? Yay!
@Sterno Eh, it was alright.
@Sterno Right the one with the MMO thing...
Revolution made me weep tears of shame for humanity when I realized enough people watch it to warrant a second season.
Nov 12, 2013 01:42
@Reetesh @GnomeSlice ooh, thank you both! I'm delighted :D
I feel all fuzzy.
@RedRiderX the first ~8 seasons of SG1 are very heavy on Egyptian mythology so if you're into that it's a bonus
@kalina It's hard not to be interested in something like that.
@OrigamiRobot is playing Dark Souls. Everyone ping @OrigamiRobot to see if you can distract him and get him killed.
Hmm what about Torchwood?
No. You're better off with B5.
user20683
Nov 12, 2013 01:45
@RedRiderX Children of Earth was good
user20683
everything else is...oh dear god
Fuuuuuck there's nobody seeding this torrent.
@GnomeSlice Not everyone is into midget porn!
@Sterno Music this time.
@Sterno My ping sounds aren't working.
Nov 12, 2013 01:46
I am finally home!
@GnomeSlice I'm pretty sure linking this in chat is a bannable offence
@kalina I just wanted to prove it wasn't porn
by breaking the rule on illegal content? gg
You have proven nothing!
Nov 12, 2013 01:47
How 'bout this?
@GnomeSlice Not that.
0 seeders. ;_;
@GnomeSlice Stupid fake download links
I'd just buy it but he seems to have taken the album down.
user20683
@RedRiderX What's your Star Trek experience?
Nov 12, 2013 01:48
@Sterno Yes. I'm trying other torrent sites and I can't fucking find the real download buttons.
@Sterno What's even worse is when the actual download link looks like a fake one so you ignore it.
@WorldEngineer Pretty much none. >.>
user20683
@RedRiderX well now
